Another method to reunite the university town Academic course: Architectural Design 6 Professional offices: Professional classroom of School of Architecture, Guangzhou University

An obvious problem of Guangzhou University Town in recent years is that the connection between various schools has weakened, and the schools are becoming more and more closed, which is different from the concept of openness and sharing at the beginning of the construction of the University Town. The project proposes to renovate the preserved village in the university town, establish a new collective—university village, and create a convenient and sustainable solution to provide a free communication platform for various groups of people living in the town. The university village will serve as a bridge connecting schools and between teachers, students and villagers, providing opportunities for the reunification of the university town.

UNIVERSITY TOWN: UTOPIA VS REALITY

At first, Guangzhou University Town was a promised "campus without walls". Students can move freely between schools. Beginning in 2016, various schools began to build fences. The visible walls make the distinction between different schools clear, and the invisible walls are also increasing. Guangzhou University City is getting farther and farther away from the planned "Utopian ideal".

URBAN VILLAGE: INTERSTIAL SPACES

As a result of the construction of the university town, urban villages have played an important role in the construction and operation of the university town. Now the university town is dominated by student groups, and the low prices, convenient transportation and extracurricular life requirements of the urban village make it the most potential transformation object and a new communication platform.

Gated Campus

Rent and prices are cheap which are affordable for students and it is convenient to reach from schools around them.Besides, the needs of students and landlords can complement each other. Students Need Service landlord

For safety, management and other reasons, every school built fences and used their own school card for Independent management.

When the university town was first built, it was open and shared, and students used the same school card to travel between schools. only to only to only to only to

Due to inconvenient transportation, it used to be an undeveloped island where people lived by farming, fishing and textiles.

Urban villages have no crowd restrictions and are affordable.

2023 Bachelor of Architecture Graduation Project (2nd Prize for Outstanding Graduation Design)

Today, with the rapid development of urban renewal, the social problems of increasing alienation and indifference between people are people's expectations for interaction and communication with each other and nature. This program creates a bond of interpersonal communication through an open communication platform, thereby strengthening the sense of belonging to the community and creating a harmonious and friendly social environment. At the same time, the organic combination of architecture and nature breaks the boundary between indoor and outdoor of traditional buildings. Explore new ways of communication between people and nature and cities.

The building echoes the urban environment and generates buildings with the concept of urban green veins. A green vein runs through the building's plane design and facade design. The green landscape platform is placed into the building space along the green veins to create a good office space, so that people can get close to nature even in high-rise buildings. The building functions are divided into office and commercial parts. The office and commercial volumes are separated to facilitate the arrangement of streamlines and open up the sight path of the landscape. There are three groups of people in the site, shopping mall tourists, office workers, and residents of the residential area. Therefore, the ground floor is elevated and connected to various vertical platforms so that people can gather and communicate on this elevated layer. CONCEPT: GREEN VALLEY MELTING MOUNTAINS INTO THE CITY

The site is adjacent to the park in the east and Yanjiang street in the north. It is located at the intersection of roads and has a wide landmark-level display surface. The architectural shape of this project should conform to the urban public space, and echo the surrounding architectural elements, to show an attitude of welcoming and inclusive to the outside, and to create an urban space that continues the architectural style of the region.

The shape of the building is made into two twin towers of the same height, with an outdoor platform in between, and the bottom is connected to create an urban three-dimensional garden space with a rich sense of ecology.

DESIGN ANALYSIS

the design is based on the philosophy of void design, where subtracted space becomes a literal ‘addition’ of shared space. The void creates a valley between two facing, and connected, towers. each unit has a small green space that, when tended to, contributes to the overall view from the opposing section. it is believed that such a method would not only heighten the quality of life for people, but increase mutual civic dependency within the sometimes alienating city landscape.

More than 90% of the current climate warming is caused by human activities. Cities, as the main places of human activities, consume a lot of fossil energy during their operation. As an important unit and subject of urban carbon emission reduction, communities are the key to realizing global carbon reduction and low-carbon urbanization. The project hopes to create an adaptive low-carbon community which is new environmentally and friendly by combining Guangzhou's humid and hot climate characteristics, centering on the design of agricultural collective housing, combined with rain garden and landscape road system design, hoping to create a new architectural form and production and residence model in a sustainable way.

GUANGZHOU CLIMATE ANALYSIS AND SUSTAINABLE DESIGN STRATEGIES

Guangzhou is located in the subtropical monsoon climate zone, characterized by hot and humid climate, large amount of radiation, high temperature and small temperature difference. It is greatly affected by typhoons in summer. The dominant wind direction in summer is southeast wind formed by tropical ocean airflow, and the dominant wind direction in winter is northerly wind formed by dry land airflow.

Heat insulation, sunshade and ventilation are the key contents of building climate adaptability design in hot and humid climate.Based on this, the project adopted four coping strategies.

RAIN

02 ENERGY

is initially purified and collected through the natural filtration of the rain garden. Horizontal shading and vertical greening are adopted to reduce building heat radiation and energy consumption. While solar panels generate electricity.

Vertical farming grows more healthy food on site, saving transportation costs and reducing transportation energy consumption.

In order to improve comfort, large areas are planted vertically and horizontally to reduce the temperature in the community, while sky bridges are designed for sun shading. Agricultural collective living

Shade and air movement can be summarized by increasing the comfort area nearly 7 times and decreasing the average temperature from 8 ℃ hotter than comfort to 4 ℃ hotter than comfort.

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE

The low-carbon sustainable design of the community provides residents with a comfortable living environment. There is also a reasonable plan in functional design, smooth and clear streamlines and various functional spaces to meet the spiritual needs of residents.

The building layout guide the summer monsoon to pass through and block the cold winter wind, creating a comfortable wind environment. Combating

The building is generally oriented north-south, with good lighting.

According to our group of buildings, enumerate the possibility of people flow between groups.

Add different gravity magnitude and control point position to calculate different possibilities iteratively.

Combine screening with differentresults and merge curves to obtainthe indication of spatial division.

Design the overpass according to the simulated curve, and adjust the shape according to the specific design function.

RAIN GARDEN DESIGN & VERTICAL GARDENS DESIGN

The waterscape park in the community center can reduce the urban heat island effect, purify the air and adjacent microclimate by 2-3 degrees. At the same time, the white noise of the water flow and the vegetation can reduce the interference of urban noise. The vertical gardens can collect and purify rainwater on roof for crop growth, and there are artificial lights on the indoor roof to increase production.

Besides, it is also a landscape that can provide people viewing, plant education and leisure.

Architectural Design 4

Professional classroom of School of Architecture, Guangzhou University

Architecture constitutes the form of the city and constructs the life and culture of the city. A city's architecture carries its attributes which reflect the character of it. A city is a product of historical forces. Anyone's understanding or influence on a city is fragmented and partial, while the whole of the city is formed by patchwork of parts. Traditional museums present history in a linear format, with materials isolated and sanitiesed from their urban contexts. The Collage Museum,on the other hand, celebrates the true forms of urban context - its natural messiness and contradictions.By curating both real and faked architectural fragments in an “urban collage”, the museum transcends the neglected, unregulated urban evolutions into a fantastical dream world.

When restoring ancient buildings, people strive to restore the original appearance of that period, using the same materials and shapes.

The first-floor residence in the urban village occupies part of the space on the ground floor and is used for commercial or garden use. COPY SAME

Drawing inspiration from the analysis of the elements and penetration of Guangzhou architecture, the architectural elements are arranged in a non-linear but ordered format through continuous attempts. Arranged in an orderly format. This is a disorganized and non-material space, the rules applied to this design are very limited and confined to a specific range hoping to reach eternity and commemoration through obsolescence, and to be able to feel every change of the built nature.

Today, with the rapid development of urban renewal, behind the social problem of people's increasing alienation and indifference is people's expectation for interaction and communication with each other and nature. This plan creates bonds of interpersonal communication through an open communication platform, thereby strengthening people's sense of belonging to the community and creating a harmonious and friendly social environment. At the same time, architecture and nature are organically combined, breaking the boundaries between indoor and outdoor traditional buildings. Explore new ways of communication between people, nature and cities.

The building responds to the urban environment and generates architecture with the concept of urban green veins. A green vein runs through the plane design and facade design of the building. The green landscape platform is placed into the building space along the green veins to create a good office life. The space allows people to get close to nature even in high-rise buildings. The building functions are divided into office and commercial parts. The office and commercial volumes are separated to facilitate the layout of streamlines and open up the sight lines of the landscape. In the site, there are three groups of people: shopping mall tourists, office workers, and residents of residential areas. Therefore, between the commercial and office areas, there is an elevated space facing the residential area, so that people can gather and communicate on this elevated level.

CONCEPT GENERATING

The design concept of this plan is the "green vein" of the city, which continues the concept of green landscape belt in the urban design concept and derives the "green vein" of the city. The graphic design is in line with urban design, and the facade design is like a green platform spiraling upward.

The streets of Beiting Village in the university town are the carriers of people's publicactivities. Like the traditional market space, people are closely connected because otbusiness deals. The bustling streets are full of vendor peddling, people bargaining, orthe surprise and joy of making a good deal. This high-density urban space's vitality presents an uneven distribution in time andspace. Regarding spatial distribution, the public space in the village is only in acrowded and dense main street formed by the south and the main road junction, but there is no adeguate public interaction space at the bottom of the village. During thetime of a year the commercial vitality was also relatively low during the three-month student holiday, so we hope to explore a balance between the vitality penetration of street space and the limited available space.

A community thousands of faces in, "surface" refers to the market module board withcountless combination possibilities, and "community" refers to the sense of closenessand closeness formed by people based on the new market. Through installing modular, prefabricated market unitsand furniture provides higher flexibility for the function shift of a stall in a day or ayear. Use the online market community application to link with the villagers onlineso they can better the market environment and create a strong sense of communitybelongingness. This project combines space flexibility, internet digital technology, and three-dimensionastreet space to continue the vitality of traditional street market in the new era.

DESIGN GENERATION AND OPERATION MODE

The overall design is comprehensively designed from the three dimensions of street, function and traffic. The harmonious combination of the three systems realizes the echo with the site, complete functions and convenient transportation.

Two criss-crossing roads are designed to divide the site into four parts, connecting the surrounding areas of the site and making the market more fluid.

Continuing the traditional commercial street space, the street is verticalized and the commercial street surface is increased.

According to the dynamic and static requirements of the function, the site is divided into 4 spaces with different functions. Infiltrate the landscape of the mountain into the interior of the building.

In the space-time design, the commonly used functional spaces are fixed to meet people's minimum functional requirements.

The circulation system organically composed of active platforms and stairs provides active circulation and space.

A frame that can accommodate flexible changes and movements is set outside the space with fixed functions.

INTERNET CONNECTION

Students have a fast pace of life and pursue cost-effective activities

Use the online bazaar community to form a connection between users and the bazaar

Increase the commercial value of the shops along the street, and design a movable facade business.

Add corridors along the facade to connect internal and external traffic to create a commercial effect on the facade.

OFFLINE

Introduce convenient transportation for commercial connections on the facade. The rest platform is available for activities and viewing.

Mountains & Flowing Water

Course design assignments in the first semester of junior year

Mountains and Flowing Water, as the name suggests, the concept of the hotel comes from natural mountains and rivers. The main shape of the building is designed with the intention of mountains, and strives to make the hotel blend into nature without any violation. Arranged according to fold lines on the plane, like the twists and turns of the mountain road, but also leave the best view of the site to the guest rooms; on the facade, the fold line rises from bottom to high, like the mountain ups and downs. The lobby is arranged at the highest point of the site, so that visitors who come here can have a panoramic view of the mountain and the hotel when they enter the hotel. In the volume of the guest room, the volume is interrupted and placed in the middle of the landscape, enhancing the level of the landscape and penetrating the landscape into the interior. The same is true at the corner of the body. The flowing water flows from the lobby to the gymnasium, passes through the swimming pool, and finally forms a magnificent waterfall on the side of the lake, making the hotel seem to grow in the mountains.

DESIGN NOTES

The overall design of the building is simple and the shape is low-key, so as not to create a sense of division to the surrounding environment. On the side of Linjiang Lingxia Road, the ground floor of the building is elevated and open, providing residents with activities. The interior design of the building has sculptural design inserted into three traditional buildings. The three sculptures are bent horizontally and staggered vertically, creating an interesting space for the inner atrium. In the sculpture, you will experience different spatial feelings among the three sculptures. The exhibition halls are arranged on the second and third floors, the second floor is the basic exhibition hall, and the third floor is equipped with digital exhibition halls, themed exhibition halls and temporary exhibition halls.

The museum has vacated a square, so that the facade of the Ziwei Mansion, a preserved historical building, can show and passers-by can see it and feel the local culture. Tere are three major historical buildings of the Communist Party of China on Guangdong Qianjie Street, square can be vacated to gather and disperse people, and at the same time, it respects the three major historical buildings of the Communist Party of China.

Tracing to the source means tracing back to the original source of local culture, respecting local cultural history, and actively adopting local cultural elements to enrich the connotation of museum design.
