BIG MAY MAKE THE NEWS BUT SMALL CHANGES THE WORLD ~AHMED REHAB

DROPDROP NETWORK BY JOANNE NIHOM AND MARIJN SCHRIEKEN C-ROOTS, JUNE 2016

STORIES AND STUFF OF EVERYDAY LIFE

A DIFFERENT VIEW, A DIFFERENT STORY Joanne Nihom and Marijn Schrieken are fascinated by people’s versatility and flexibility. Daily news reports suggest differently, but what they see worldwide is people working together in everyday life, regardless of cultures or backgrounds. There are people collaborating in arts, culture, education, health, and much more. Often in the most sensitive and painful areas they share the emotions of loss, poverty, and hatred, and that’s precisely where they come together and realize that it all revolves around living together, even with the so-called enemy. That it’s about working together to build a future for their children and grandchildren. All these stories, big and small, fail to reach us through the media. The result is a one-sided, distorted, negative image that only incites more negativity. Not for nothing is it said ‘no news is good news’, or you could even say ‘good news is no news.’ For Joanne and Marijn it’s time for a positive message that isn’t exaggerated or naive, but simply because that’s what real life is like. The focus is on the connection, not war. It’s about love, not hate. It’s about mutual understanding. It’s about each and every one of us, and it’s about our lives.. It’s time for DropDrop Network.

Stories that can inspire many people and that give a more objective picture than the negative worldview that’s been created and manipulated by the media. Focusing on projects of The Parents Circle Families Forum for example, a joint IsraeliPalestinian organization made up of more than 600 bereaved families.

DROPDROP NETWORK – SO WHAT’S IN THE NAME The name stems from the many associations and symbolism that it evokes. Drops fall and cause ripples that then become waves in evergrowing circles. Perfectly pure, clear droplets can actually get things moving. Drops are universally seen as symbols for nourishment and connection and they make the earth fertile. They’re also politically neutral, transparent and innocent. Little drops flow together to form big rivers, lakes, and seas. If you drop something, you let it fall and then see what happens. No heavy-duty political statement that attracts a swarm of egos, just a simple observation that’s worth being seen and heard.

MANIFESTO DROPDROP NETWORK “Although I’m Dutch, born and bred, Israel is key in my life. It’s a country that is deeply scarred by the grief and pain that years of war and terrorist attacks have inflicted. And there are very few families that have remained unscathed. Yet every day I see examples aplenty of people who are able to overcome this grief and turn it around to create something beautiful. Even in a melting pot like this, and even in the most sensitive and painful areas, there is a connection, even with the socalled enemy. In Israel people are working together effectively in all sorts of fields, including arts, culture, education, and health. But these are the powerful and empowering stories that don’t reach us through the media. What we see is an image that is one-sided, biased, and negative. The media would have us believe that the world is an ongoing disaster zone. Whereas, meanwhile, people are simply choosing to live their lives, side by side, friend or foe, and not head to head. So do the media give us what we want to hear, or have we been shaped by them?

~Joanne Nihom Joanne is a journalist, she set up DropDrop Network together with Marijn Schrieken. Joanne is the face of DropDrop Network and she defined its thinking.

Whatever the answer may be, the time is right for positivity. Not a farfetched and naive picture to offset all the negatives, but because that’s just what real life is like: the stories and stuff of everyday life. Human connections instead of warring factions. Community instead of disunity. You and me and our lives. Stories that are inspirational for so many and that give a more objective picture than the negativity that the media creates and manipulates for global consumption. The time is ripe to break the news cycle and turn dreams into reality. To see the beauty in everyday life. That’s why our aim is to reach a wide audience with stories and actions that highlight this. An initiative that is gradually gaining a global foothold as it develops organically - an inspiration and motivation to undertake new measures. A network with the momentum to move us forward. And in order to achieve this, we plan to form the potential setting for stories that can come together and be shared in any form or medium, like rain that restores the earth’s fertility... drop by drop.”

WHY PEOPLE BEHAVE LIKE PEOPLE

WHY

Politics and the media have shaped an image of the world that people believe, it’s dark and negative. But people perceive day-to-day life quite differently and that’s where they work together and connect. Simply because people want to live their lives, they’re in search of happiness for themselves and their children. Looking for solutions instead of problems and preferring to see the good in other people. There are often more similarities to be observed than differences with the socalled enemy. But also from a purely practical angle, because you can achieve more together than alone. The inspiration for DropDrop Network came when Joanne asked Marijn to visit her in Israel where she lives and to give some further thought to these ideas. Marijn had to admit that she’d never actually been to Israel because of all the negative news, the war, the attacks, and the constant threat. And the realization was a shock in itself because it illustrated first-hand how our perceptions can be clouded by the media’s doom-and-gloom portrayal of reality. After spending a week in Israel with Joanne she was convinced and wanted help to further develop the thinking and start with DropDrop Network.

HOW

WHAT

A group of Israelis and Palestinians were cooking together. They were preparing sushi when one of the Palestinians took the rice-wrapped raw fish, held it to her nose, put it in her mouth and said: “Tamara, the things I’d do for peace…” Personal stories with a human point of view spread like drops over the earth.

Hundreds of bereaved and other Palestinian and Israeli women will gather on International Women’s Day to give their vote for a peaceful solution to the conflict. We women, who are never consulted on decisions about going to war, we, who are never asked to the ceasefire or peace negotiation table, ask you to witness a monument dedicated to the future victims of this conflict.

Many of the examples given here are Joanne’s personal experiences of the Middle East, but we’re looking for stories like these from other parts of the world.

WHAT IS OUR PROMISE DropDrop Network wants the stories that illustrate the beauty of daily goings-on to be accessible for everyone. It wants to trigger a movement, featuring as many initiatives as possible, and creating the space needed for new ones. Making a difference by bringing people and ideas together. By showing whatever is happening in the world, by highlighting people and giving a voice to those who have a different experience than what we read in the daily news. A change of mind about news to create a different mindset about news.

WHY

DropDrop Network wants to provide a platform for all new and existing initiatives. Coming together so that they can be seen and heard. A platform with different forms and media. From events, social media, website, blogs, and magazines to whatever the imagination can conjure.

HOW DO WE PRESENT OURSELVES What you see is what you get. To achieve our goal we need a distinctive and recognizable visual style that can communicate our values and ideas. DropDrop Network should be recognizable in all forms and media, and it should have the potential to spread. And in this respect the contrasts are what make it interesting. Often apparent contradictions that actually reinforce each other. Black against colour, friendly but powerful and passionate. The brand image are the drops that can be used in a variety of ways. Black is the basis, the fertile ground for the colourful drops that represent the stories. A strong identity, visible on every conceivable media. From Facebook to the city streets.

WHY

HOW WHAT The International Olympic Commission announced that four women and six men are part of the first all-refugee team. The Refugee Olympic Team, as it will be known, will compete in running, swimming, and judo, and is made up of athletes from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, and Syria. The Standing Committee of Israel to the United Nations released a video entitled ‘United Pianos’ featuring eleven pianists from around the world playing one musical piece together.

THE NEXT STEP With our DropDrop Network we want to reach as many people as possible, young and old, from every faith and culture in every corner of the world. We hope that the idea gets people thinking and that they want to help spread the flow of pleasant news. That’s our dream and ambition. And to realize this, we need your support, in various ways, by joining the thought process, by working with us, or by making a financial contribution, and last but not least by spreading this news. Drop by Drop. Joanne Nihom and Marijn Schrieken

Who could have guessed that heavy metal could promote peace? But that’s just what’s happening as the Israeli band, Orphaned Land, and the Palestinian band, Khalas, have toured Britain. They come from different countries. They even write different kinds of lyrics. But they have shown how art has an ability to transcend lines that politics often cannot.
