Joey L. http://www.joeyl.com/info/bio/
Joey L. is a Canadian commercial photographer, director and published author based in Brooklyn, New York. A sensitive observer of endangered cultures and traditions, Joe y travels the globe creating dramatic portraits while giving the viewer a powerful insight into his subjects’ lives. His photo series range from Brooklyn, New York to Siberut, Indonesia; proof of an artist equally comfortable with the familiar and the exotic. Kyle Thompson, a surreal photographer, who was a pizza delivery boy and incredibly shy. In fact, when he got interested in photography a couple of years ago, his anxiety prevented him from talking to other people and ask them to be the subject of his pictures. So what could he do? Well, photograph himself, of course! For his self-portraits, Kyle would spend hours, even days, walking alone through forests and exploring abandoned houses — all over the world, whenever he got a chance. After taking hundreds of photos, he posted some of his best to Reddit, where his work got over four million views, reported Viralnova. After his work went viral, Kyle quit his job and became a full-time photographer, with his incredible snaps now featured in several magazines. Kyle’s unique self-portraits were captured with a Canon 60D, a 50mm 1.8 lens, a tripod and a timer — from the top of a mountain in Bolivia to innovatively using a broken down plane in a corn field. He’s a social network icon now.
His work is cinematic and contemporary – a fine art portrait approach to subjects once only seen in photojournalistic styles. SELECT COMMERCIAL CLIENTS: Coca-Cola, National Geographic, JWT, Doner, McGarry Bowen, Upshot, Cimarron Group, Verizon, Nickelodeon, History channel, FX Channel, Smirnoff, Pennzoil, Kawasaki, Summit Entertainment, Forbes, Services for the Underserved, The Government of Abu Dhabi EXHIBITION: “Joey L. is an entirely new breed of photographer who brings photojournalism to the fine art arena. The dignity and beauty that he portrays in peoples of rapidly vanishing cultures are incredibly important in getting their message out to the world.” —Dr. Peter Keller, President, Bowers Museum “These exquisite images evoke in the most powerful and glori-
ous way the place of origin of all humanity. From Africa, 40,000 years ago, our human ancestors began their great journey and within 2500 generations carried the human imagination to every corner of the habitable world. ” — Wade Davis, National Geographic Explorer, Ethnobotanist, Anthropologist, Author “Joey L’s subjects present themselves with an artistry which bridges the gap between them and the viewer. We see their frailty, and their pride and resilience in confronting our myopia, which condemns them as backward, dispensable, and moribund ‘primitives’. Joey L’s art penetrates their exoticism and shows us the sheer beauty of our shared humanity, with all its tragedy and hope.” —Stephen Corry, Director, Survival International “The images are breath taking and this collection is alive with the all universal vibrations of our existence” —DMC, Musician Use of Light The lighting in a lot of Joey L’s shots is dramatic and intricate. He has been known to bounce flash lighting off reflective surfaces such as tin foil and plastic wrap. A lot of this kind of technique came from experimentation and thinking outside the box. Several entries on his website have tips for using the right mixtures of natural and studio lighting in different settings. Joey L. is also a photographer who shares plenty of information in tutorials for other photographers; these are both effective and
easy to understand for those of all levels. Compositional Technique Much of Joey L’s composition depends on the type of assignment. For advertising assignments, he makes a point to meet the exact specs of the client. He then experiments with his own ideas to make some additional shots that are similar but just a little more interesting. Much of his travel photography focuses on tribal populations in remote locations, and he often makes interesting shots of these people in both their natural habitats and against simple black backdrops. Use of Contrast Contrast in Joey L’s photography is dramatic in many of his portrait and commercial shots. These effects are achieved with a combination of technical decisions made during each shoot and edit made afterwards. He again stresses the importance of creativity and adaptability in order to get the best results in photography. Parting Thoughts Plenty of the images that Joey L. creates are like paintings; the viewer wants to look at them for long periods of time because they are so intricate and interesting. Much of his work for TV shows casts familiar characters in a new and different light, and he succeeds in bringing out new sides of his subjects’ personalities as well.
Annie Leibovitz Life Through A Lens Annie Leibovitz Portrait by John Keatley
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database//leibovitz_a.html
Born in 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut, Annie Leibovitz enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute intent on studying painting. It was not until she traveled to Japan with her mother the summer after her sophomore year that she discovered her interest in taking photographs. When she returned to San Francisco that fall, she began taking night classes in photography. Time spent on a kibbutz in Israel allowed her to hone her skills further. In 1970 Leibovitz approached Jann Wenner, founding editor of Rolling Stone, which he’d recently launched and was operating out of San Francisco. Impressed with her portfolio, Wenner gave Leibovitz her first assignment: shoot John Lennon. Leibovitz’s blackand-white portrait of the shaggylooking Beatle graced the cover of the January 21, 1971 issue. Two years later she was named Rolling Stone chief photographer. When the magazine began printing in color in 1974, Leibovitz followed suit. “In school, I wasn’t taught anything about lighting, and I was only taught black-andwhite,” she told ARTnews in 1992. “So I had to learn color myself.” Among her subjects from that period are Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, and Patti Smith. Leibovitz also served as the official photographer for the Rolling Stones’ 1975 world tour. While on the road with
the band she produced her iconic black-and-white portraits of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, shirtless and gritty. In 1980 Rolling Stone sent Leibovitz to photograph John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who had recently released their album “Double Fantasy.” For the portrait Leibovitz imagined that the two would pose together nude. Lennon disrobed, but Ono refused to take off her pants. Leibovitz “was kinda disappointed,” according toRolling Stone, and so she told Ono to leave her clothes on. “We took one Polaroid,” said Leibovitz, “and the three of us knew it was profound right away.” The resulting portrait shows Lennon nude and curled around a fully clothed Ono. Several hours later, Lennon was shot dead in front of his apartment. The photograph ran on the cover of the Rolling Stone Lennon commemorative issue. In 2005 the American Society of Magazine Editors named it the best magazine cover from the past 40 years. Annie Leibovitz: Photographs, the photographer’s first book, was published in 1983. The same year Leibovitz joined Vanity Fair and was made the magazine’s first contributing photographer. At Vanity Fair she became known for her wildly lit, staged, and provocative portraits of celebrities. Most famous among them are Whoopi Goldberg submerged in a bath of
milk and Demi Moore naked and holding her pregnant belly. (The cover showing Moore — which then-editor Tina Brown initially balked at running — was named second best cover from the past 40 years.) Since then Leibovitz has photographed celebrities ranging from Brad Pitt to Mikhail Baryshnikov. She’s shot Ellen DeGeneres, the George W. Bush cabinet, Michael Moore, Madeleine Albright, and Bill Clinton. She’s shot Scarlett Johannson and Keira Knightley nude, with Tom Ford in a suit; Nicole Kidman in ball gown and spotlights; and, recently, the world’s long-awaited first glimpse of Suri Cruise, along with parents Tom and Katie. Her portraits have appeared in Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker, and in ad campaigns for American Express, the Gap, and the Milk Board. Among other honors, Leibovitz has been made a Commandeur des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government and has been designated a living legend by the Library of Congress. Her first museum show, Photographs: Annie Leibovitz 1970-1990, took place in 1991 at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and toured internationally for six years. At the time she was only the second living portraitist — and the only woman — to be featured in an exhibition by the institution.
Leibovitz met Susan Sontag in 1989 while photographing the writer for her book AIDS and its Metaphors. “I remember going out to dinner with her and just sweating through my clothes because I thought I couldn’t talk to her,” Leibovitz said in an interview with The New York Times late last year. Sontag told her, “You’re good, but you could be better.” Though the two kept separate apartments, their relationship lasted until Sontag’s death in late 2004. Sontag’s influence on Leibovitz was profound. In 1993 Leibovitz traveled to Sara jevo during the war in the Balkans, a trip that she admits she would not have taken without Sontag’s input. Among her work from that trip is Sara jevo, Fallen Bicycle of Teenage Boy Just Killed by a Sniper, a black-andwhite photo of a bicycle collapsed on blood-smeared pavement. Sontag, who wrote the accompanying essay, also first conceived of Leibovitz’s book Women (1999). The book includes images of famous people along with those not well known. Celebrities like Susan Sarandon and Diane Sawyer share space with miners, soldiers in basic training, and Las Vegas showgirls in and out of costume. Leibovitz’s most recent book, A Photographer’s Life: 1990-2005, includes her trademark celebrity
portraits. But it also features personal photographs from Leibovitz’s life: her parents, siblings, children, nieces and nephews, and Sontag. Leibovitz, who has called the collection “a memoir in photographs,” was spurred to assemble it by the deaths of Sontag and her father, only weeks apart. The book even includes photos of Leibovitz herself, like the one that shows her nude and eight months pregnant, à la Demi Moore. That picture was taken in 2001, shortly before Leibovitz gave birth to daughter Sarah. Daughters Susan and Samuelle, named in honor of Susan and Leibovitz’s father, were born to a surrogate in 2005. Leibovitz composed these personal photographs with materials that she used when she was first starting out in the ’70s: a 35-millimeter camera, black-and-white Tri X film. “I don’t have two lives. This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it.” Still, she told the Times, this book is the “most intimate, it tells the best story, and I care about it.”

Behind the Lens: Jim Marshall http://www.lomography.com/magazine/ lifestyle/2012/02/29/behind-the-lensjim-marshall
Jim Marshall was able to capture some of rock ‘n roll’s finest moments through his camera. Take a look at some of his photos and learn more about him in this second installment of Behind the Lens. “I have no kids, my photographs are my children” – Jim Marshall Jim Marshall was known for his iconic photos of Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Jim Morrison, and other musicians who shaped the rock ‘n roll era in the 1960’s and 1970’s. He was born in 1936 in Chicago, Illinois and his family moved to San Francisco a couple of years later. While he was in high school, he took interest in photography and bought himself a camera — a Leica M2. There were many artists and musicians in San Francisco at that time and he took that opportunity to document them with his trusty camera. His big break as a photographer came when he had a chance encounter with jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. The musician needed a lift and Jim Marshall obliged. In exchange for the favor, Coltrane allowed Jim Marshall to photograph him and ended up using 9 rolls of film. After that incident, Marshall moved to New York and worked on several assignments for various companies. From then on, many career opportunities came knocking on his door. Below is a list of some notable events that Jim Marshall was fortunate enough to capture: • Photographed Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, and Cream at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. • Photographed Johnny Cash recroding at Folsom Prison in 1968. • Took photographs of The Rolling Stones tour for LIFE magazine. • Had a photo session with Grace Slick and Janis Joplin together — two queens of rock ’n roll who were supposedly rivals. • Took photographs at the last Beatles concert and the only photographer allowed backstage access. • Woodstock ’69’s chief photographer. Because of his presence and perseverance, he was able to capture the personalities of his subjects, which can be quite difficult in rock ‘n roll photography since there’s already a perceived image of the artist.Jim Marshall continued to take photographs later in life and even had snapshots of Velvet Revolver and Lenny Kravitz. Jim Marshall died in 2010 at the age of 74. He has certainly contributed some of the most iconic photos in rock ‘n roll photography and the spirit of the 60’s and 70’s will always be remembered through photographs thanks to his skill and his talent.

Edward Burtynsky Exploring the Residual Landscape http://www.edwardburtynsky.com/site_contents/About/aboutBio.html
Brandon Stanton’s New York Stories http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2013/nov/03/brandon-stantonhumans-of-new-york-pictures
When Brandon Stanton began photographing the Humans of New York, he didn’t imagine ending up with an instant bestseller “If any of you drove by the Brooklyn Navy Yards at 6pm last night, you may have seen a grown man sobbing in an empty parking lot,” wrote Brandon Stanton on his blog last week after his book Humans of New York debuted at No 1 on the New York Times bestseller list. “It completely blindsided me… It was a miracle.” When Stanton began photographing strangers on the streets of New York four years ago, he never planned for the project to become a blog, let alone a book. Having just lost his job as a bond trader in Chicago (which he landed through a friend who saw trading potential in Stanton’s decision to bet a $3,000 student loan on Obama winning the 2008 election), he took the opportunity to travel and focus on photography, his hobby. His travels came to an end in New York when he realised he’d found a project. “I saw all these people; this diversity, this density, and New York was perfectly suited to the type of street photography I’d fallen into.” After much persuasion from a friend, Stanton created Facebook and Tumblr pages to make his photographs public. Within months his fan base numbered hundreds of thousands – “just because they wanted to see two or three photos of people that I’d taken on the streets every day”. Today, Stanton has more than 1.6 million Facebook followers. He says and that the most interesting stories “tend to revolve around very strong emotions, like happiness or sadness or fear”. Asking questions such as “What is your greatest struggle right now?” and “If you could give one piece of advice to a large group of people, what would you say?”, Stanton elicits quirky and poignant responses from complete strangers. It is this that makes his storytelling so compelling.
Edward Burtynsky is known as one of Canada’s most respected photographers. His remarkable photographic depictions of global industrial landscapes are included in the collections of over fifty ma jor museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California. Born in 1955 of Ukrainian heritage at St. Catharines, Ontario, Burtynsky is a graduate of Ryerson University (Bachelor of Applied Arts in Photography) and studied Graphic Art at Niagara College in Welland. He links his early exposure to the sites and images of the General Motors plant in his hometown to the development of his photographic work. His imagery explores the intricate link between industry and nature, combining the raw elements of mining, quarrying, manufacturing,
shipping, oil production and recycling into eloquent, highly expressive visions that find beauty and humanity in the most unlikely of places. In 1985, Burtynsky also founded Toronto Image Works, a darkroom rental facility, custom photo laboratory, digital imaging and new media computer-training centre catering to all levels of Toronto’s art community. Mr. Burtynsky also sits on the board of directors for: Toronto’s international photography festival, Contact and The Ryerson Gallery and Research Center. Exhibitions include Water (2013) at the New Orleans Museum of Art & Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, Louisiana (international touring exhibition), Oil (2009) at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. (five-year international touring show), Manufactured Landscapes at the National Gallery of Canada (touring from 2003 - 2005), Before the Flood(2003), and China (toured 2005 - 2008). Burtynsky’s
visually compelling works are currently being exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, in the United States, Europe and Asia. An active lecturer on photographic art, Mr. Burtynsky’s speaking engagements include the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., George Eastman House in Rochester, NY, The Canadian Center for Architecture in Montreal, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the TEDconference, Idea City, and Ryerson University in Toronto. His images appear in numerous periodicals each year, in the past among them are: Canadian Art, Art in America, The Smithsonian, Harper’s Magazine, Flash Art, Blind Spot, Art Forum, Saturday Night, Playboy, National Geographic Society and the New York Times. Mr. Burtynsky’s distinctions include the TED Prize, The Outreach award at the Rencon-
tres d’Arles, The Flying Elephant Fellowship, Applied Arts Magazine book award(s), and the Roloff Beny Book award. In 2006 he was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Canada and holds four honorary doctorate degrees, with a fifth to be awarded in 2013.
ible I search for subjects that are rich in detail and scale yet open in their meaning. Recycling yards, mine tailings, quarries and refineries are all places that are outside of our normal experience, yet we partake of their output on a daily basis.
Edward Burtynsky is represented by: Nicholas Metivier Gallery, Toronto; Paul Kuhn Gallery, Calgary; Art 45, Montreal; Howard Greenberg and Bryce Wolkowitz, New York; Sundaram Tagore Gallery, Hong Kong; Flowers Gallery, London; Galerie Stefan Röpke in Köln, Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco and Sundaram Tagore Gallery in Hong Kong. His prints are housed in over fifty public collections worldwide.
These images are meant as metaphors to the dilemma of our modern existence; they search for a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. We are drawn by desire - a chance at good living, yet we are consciously or unconsciously aware that the world is suffering for our success. Our dependence on nature to provide the materials for our consumption and our concern for the health of our planet sets us into an uneasy contradiction. For me, these images function as reflecting pools of our times.
Nature transformed through industry is a predominant theme in my work. I set course to intersect with a contemporary view of the great ages of man; from stone, to minerals, oil, transportation, silicon, and so on. To make these ideas vis-
-Edward Burtynsky
A self-professed obsessive (“Hey there. I’m Brandon. I get really passionate about things,” he introduces himself on the blog), Stanton spends two hours every day (“I do stress that I don’t take days off”) wandering the streets, and about two in three people he approaches agree to be photographed. He comes from Georgia, and says the sheer number of people he talks to in the city gives New York “a small-town feel – I’m always seeing people that I’ve photographed”. Nevertheless, a few days after reaching the top of the charts, he “went out photographing and got rejected about 10 times in a row. It was the worst night of photography that I’ve had in a long time,” he recalls, laughing.
“New York is a giant place and no matter how big you get, there’s still going to be a ton of people who haven’t heard of you.”

Justin Quinnell The Pinhole Wizard http://www.biography.com/people/diane-arbus-9187461
Justin Quinnell is a master at making weird and wondrous pinhole photographs He recently worked as the Pinhole consultant for the movie. The Brothers Bloom’ and his cameras are featured in the film. We took the opportunity to talk to him about his Hollywood experience and fascination for pinhole photography. How did you first get introduced to the world of Pinhole photography?
What’s your favourite Pinhole photo you’ve ever taken?
I’m not sure if this has much relevance but when I was 4 I had several operations on my eyes to sort out something. I remember having a patch on one eye with a small hole to see through. I also remember a fairly unsuccessful experiment when I was at school. It was well after my degree however that I got hooked. I was head of the photography department at a non-too affluent area of Bristol, the kids couldn’t afford cameras, (but could afford several cans of coke every day) so I got them to make cameras out of their drink cans and got hooked myself. It was all pre Internet, so apart from the pinhole journal and a few obscure magazines I didn’t know anyone else who was doing that kind of work.
The Royal Crescent – Bath. It was one of my first successful colour images and taken in 1991 when you had to wait for 4 days till your film was processed! The one I’m most sorry didn’t come out was a mouth photo of my son Louis when he was being born.
What is it about Pinhole Photography which most fascinates you?
Family stuff (I have a beautiful wife and two equally fab kiddies), bird watching, slobbing around in a pub, mending the leaks in our motor home! (usual stuff!). Currently I am trying to get a slipped disc sorted. (The MRI scan almost messed up due to a pinhole camera I had in my pocket!)
There is no view finder, it clashes art and science after a 150 year schism, a lot happens in pre-visualising the images, elements of time, astronomy, wonder etc. etc. etc. (This is what I go on about for hours in my lectures!). It’s also cheap, and it’s anti-commercial. I am involved with the Green Party and was getting disillusioned with photography and the amount of destruction it can cause – pin-holing gets around this. It’s also delving into the unknown, a bit like riding a unicycle – It feels like you are constantly falling, I quite like that! We hear you worked on the recent film ‘The Brothers Bloom’ as ‘Pinhole Consultant’ Could you tell us a little about it? I had a phone call from Belgrade whilst on a train from University of Falmouth where I teach part time. It was from a researcher who said the writer and director of a film wanted to use my photos. My brother had just died so I didn’t really know what it was about until a few weeks later I found myself emailing with Rian Johnson. I ended up in CA with my family for a month and having a ball! The film is great but a few of the pinhole bits got edited from the UK version. Its release was also delayed for ages, which didn’t help. His next film ‘Looper’ has Bruce Willis, no pinhole though!
Any tips for people new to Pinhole photography? Don’t think too much, just do stuff. What do you do when you’re not taking photos?
Diane Arbus http://www.biography.com/people/diane-arbus-9187461
Steve McCurry http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photographers/photographer-steve-mccurry/
Steve McCurry, recognized universally as one of today’s finest image-makers, is best known for his evocative color photography. In the finest documentary tradition, McCurry captures the essence of human struggle and joy. Born in Philadelphia, McCurry graduated cum laude from the College of Arts and Architecture at the Pennsylvania State University. After working at a newspaper for two years, he left for India to freelance. It was in India that McCurry learned to watch and wait on life. “If you wait,” he realized, “people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view.” His career was launched when, disguised in native garb, he crossed the Pakistan border into rebelcontrolled Afghanistan just before the Russian invasion. When he emerged, he had rolls of film sewn
into his clothes and images that would be published around the world as among the first to show the conflict there. Diane Arbus was born on March 14, 1923, in New York City. An artistic youth, she learned photography from her husband, actor Allan Arbus. Together, they found success with fashion work, but Diane soon branched out on her own. Her raw, unusual images of the people she saw while living in New York created a unique and interesting portrayal of the city. She committed suicide in New York City in 1971. Early Life Born Diane Nemerov on March 14, 1923, in New York City, Diane Arbus was one of the most distinctive photographers of the 20th century, known for her eerie portraits and off-beat subjects. Her artistic talents emerged at a young age, having created interesting drawings and paintings while in high school. In 1941, she married Allan Arbus, an American actor who fostered her artistic talent by teaching her photography. Unique Photography Working with her husband, Diane Arbus started out in advertising and fashion photography. She and Allan became quite a successful team, with photographs appearing in such magazines as Vogue. In the late 1950s, she began to focus on her own photography. To further her art, Arbus studied with photographer Lisette Model around
this time. During her wanderings around New York City, Arbus began to pursue taking photographs of people she found. She visited seedy hotels, public parks, a morgue and other various locales. These unusual images had a raw quality, and several of them found their way into the July 1960 issue of Esquire magazine. These photographs proved to be a spring board for future work. By the mid-1960s, Diane Arbus had become a well-established photographer, participating in shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, among other places. She was known for going to great lengths to get the shots she wanted. She became friends with many other famous photographers, including Richard Avedon andWalker Evans. Suicide While professionally continuing to thrive in the late 1960s, Arbus had some personal challenges. Her marriage to Allan Arbus ended in 1969, and she later struggled with depression. She committed suicide in her New York City apartment on July 26, 1971. Her work remains a subject of intense interest, and her life was the basis of the 2006 film Fur, starring Nicole Kidman as Arbus.
