Began research into the history and facts about Ellendale mine. The article by grant boxer regarding the geology of the site was interesting and began researching how diamonds and mines are formed. The concept of the anthropocene was also an interesting notion. By combining the analytical approach of research taken in regards to the geology of the mine i am considering how future humans will perceive the mine and mining activity with no context.

Began exploring modeling the mine itself as well further developing my trace idea. The notion of a confused distant future reading of the mine and Kimberly region just needs to be tested. Questions about what exactly the artifact to represent the trace would be needs further development. Utilizing grasshopper modeled the entirety of the mine and simply need to slice my segment to continue further and do a test mill. I also intend to further develop the model resolution

Practiced applied grasshopper tutorials to create potential solar responsive systems, further refinement of 3D Mine model also done, ramps included in mine and began slicing the pieces ready to be milled. Still stuck on the idea of the trace and artifact, not wanting to get to tied to one extremely specific piece, an item that has a broader scope and potential i feel would be more interesting

Began more in depth research into artifact and trace, investigated nearby Bradshaw rock paintings and art works as a potential source of inspiration and led to using a modern day perspective to view the activities of mining as if it was an ancient tradition that humans once did. Using this idea i have decided my trace will look at the notions of endowment of ourselves with precious gems and rare and expensive objects. When you think about it is still fundamentally quite strange that in our modern society there is still a demand for shiny rocks to put on our bodies, so much so we are willing as a species to go to extreme lengths to acquire them. A potential artifact in this regard would be the mine itself and an extension of this begin the diamonds which were once there. I would still like to include some linking to past cultures in the work however the idea of using modern day perspective from 2115 should allow for this. Decided the artifact will be a Diamond. After researching Ellendale mine it was revealed that the diamonds it extracts are rare yellow diamonds sold exclusively to Tiffany’s diamond jewelers in New York city. For this reason the diamonds in Ellendale have almost been exhausted and given the extent of the Tiffany’s jewelers network it becomes somewhat strange that these extremely rare diamonds have been scattered and dispersed all over the earth yet none remain in from where they are from. Carrying on from last weeks idea of looking back at the present day 2015 from 2115 this fact would be strange to historians. For my narrative i have decided that an eternity of endowment has ended and humans no longer have a desire to expend so much energy to extract rocks for the simple purpose of showing off and symbolism. A time line will demonstrate how ever since we have had the ability to make clothes we have included symbolic flourish as seen in last weeks Bradshaw illustrations ,with this extending to such extremes as diamonds. In this future energy is more precious and this blatent use of resources for diamonds has been shunned. Alternative readings on this may also allow for interesting parametric generations with diamonds and precious materials sucking up energy or expending a level of power over humans. Began experimenting with diamonds in grasshopper as well as diamond molecules. After researching diamonds last week the idea of being able to generate structures and patterns digitally mirroring nature seems very interesting and could have some very useful outcomes. The diamond artifact has been created in both a 2ct scale and on a molecular scale where a standard carbon lattice arrangement has been pieced together to see how it falls together. I began further investigation into how to use grasshopper to generate more lattice structures and am still currently looking for ways to do so. Looked into Aranda lasch and there methods, still researching grasshopper methods http://thecreatorsproject.vice.com/blog/making-the-mundane-cosmic-meet-modular-designers-arandalasch Developed brief and artifacts for assignment submission 1

Began exploring ways to use Grasshopper to generate the desired diamond structures, fundamentally the diamond formation when ignoring the center point is made from a triangular ratio and the external points when joined for the faces of the object. Began exploring ways to use grasshopper to generate this pattern, using a grid line and dividing points the appropriate ratios can be achieved.

Constructed diamond grid using measurements and grid points as outlined in week 8. The final piece takes a set of pre detmined points in rhino (in this case a diamond ratio) and measure the distances applying them to grid cells. by using the grid cells the length and width of the total formation can be altered. Still facing problems with making the height vertical it became obvious that by using the top points in the formation in rhino i could manually set the height of the diamond grids Using a proximity component i was able to join the points to generate a diamond structure.

Amongst other assignments this week i experimented with ways of extracting the exterior faces of the diamond formation amongst other ways of generating possible objects One possible way was by using the array curve and rail curve components however after barely making these two objects work they did not give an accurate diamond structure formation. The hull command seems to extract some face outlines but not all.

Cast plaster blocks to allow appropriate amount of time for blocks to become suitably hard for milling. Group laser cut mine site out of foam core to create the negative for the mine site. Being made out of foam core this caused some problems with the plaster casting process so it was decided to seal the mold with clay and then create the form. Still continuing to experiment with the Grasshopper algorithm in an attempt to figure out how to use it to create objectiles. All materials have been acquired and are ready to go.

Completed algorithm to a degree i am happy with it is now possible to make any object and intersect it with the structure to create a diamond lattice of that structure, this has been achieved using the trim command which intersects a brep with lines, i further added a cull command to clean up any lattices left over from the command to ensure that the lattices pieces are correct. Once the lattice is created for an object it can be manually patched to create an objectile. Given the nature and focus on diamonds and endowment economy and society in the first assignment i have decided to focus on wearable objectile, initially i thought rings would be a good idea however with the limitations of the clay molding procedure i chose to do bracelets. To create the bracelets and have them algorithmically i created a grass hopper defined bracelet template where the size width and height can be adjusted to create different bracelets and variations.

Now the algorithm has been completed i can create an infinite amount of variable diamond formations and lattices, i decided to create two object to be translated in to real world objects. A thin delicate diamond structure being more feminine and a thick hard edged structure designed to be more masculine in appearance. With the two lattices created i had to manually tidy up each object to avoid any overhangs and to ensure that by being a two piece mold everything sloped in a uniform direction. This was a sacrifice that was needed to be able to actually translate the object through the process of milling. Once tidied up the objects where patched to create a solid, from here giving as digital version of the final object. From here the objects where split in half intersected with a slip nozzle and keyholes to create an stl ready to be taken to the milling machine.

Production of the artifacts begins, stl file prepared last week is milled from prepared block in a two piece mold with surfacing, roughing and finishing passes. From this a selection of artefact’s is made and getting prepared for firing and glazing. Group block also extracted from form work and sanded down to a presentation quality.
