t’s the locus, it’s the heart of town, it’s where the action is. It’s where we shop and socialize, and where we take visiting friends and family. We go downtown for a movie, a concert, a celebratory meal. We go for a church or Shabbat service, to browse a book shop or gallery, to burn off stress and calories at the rec center, the gym or the yoga studio. We stroll along the brick-paved pedestrian Mall, through historic Court Square, and down some of the loveliest streets in the city. In the town-and-gown city
of Charlottesville, the best of town is downtown. No wonder it’s where Sue Foster wanted to be when she moved back to Charlottesville in 1997 after 42 years in the country. “I couldn’t wait to get back in town,” Foster says. “I love the city sounds, the sidewalks, the people walking by, the streetlights. I have always loved North Downtown. One reason I moved here was to relocate my bed and breakfast, and this was the perfect place to do so.” Well naturally. With its lovely Jeffersonian architecture, its leafy streets, and its proximity to the city’s most attractive restaurant, shopping and entertainment area as well as to Route 250, the neigh-
Let’s say you live in a two-story on East 2nd Street. You get up on a Saturday morning, take a nice aerobic hike up the hill, cross the Mall and wander into the Charlottesville City Market on Water Street for a cuppa Joe and a samosa, or maybe an organic bagel or donut. You chat with a family you see there every week, then browse the artisans’ stalls, treat yourself to a handcrafted necklace, and choose a few bars of handmade soap for stocking stuffers. You pick up eggplants and sweet potatoes from your favorite produce vendor, sample a local of cheese from the couple across the way and . . . it’s getting to be raclette weather, so why not? Heading home with your haul, visions of recipes dancing in your head, you stop in Market Street Market or Market Street Wine and decide on the recipe and—it only takes you 20 minutes!—on the wine. Planning tonight’s dinner reminds you of that surprise evening out you’re planning for your best friend. You’ll let her decide if she wants to see the classic film at the beautifully restored Paramount, where it probably showed the year it was released, or the new thriller at the 10-screen Violet Crown, where the beer selection’s larger, and the seats have handy trays. She might even prefer the reggae band at the handsomely redone Jefferson, or the jazz guitarist at the underground Southern Café and Music Hall. They’re all right on the Mall. If it was summer, you could have heard a free concert at Ting Pavilion. But it’s up to you to make dinner reservations and having reluctantly eliminated a dozen other places in easy walking distance, you’re torn between the classic American cuisine at C&O (a special occasion spot since 1976), the Korean plates at Maru, the tenderloin and sushi at Ten, or the elegant French specials at Fluerie and Petit Pois. Indoor
It’s time for a good workout now. You could walk east and take your pick of basketball, volleyball, pickleball, or a group fitness program at the Herman Key Jr Recreation Center. Instead you set your feet in motion towards ACAC, just across the Mall and the railroad tracks on Monticello Avenue, for your Zumba class—the “dance fitness party” to Latin and World music. Or maybe you’re in the mood for BODYCOMBAT, the no contact martial arts-inspired workout that teaches moves from Karate, Taekwondo, Boxing, Muay Thai, Capoeira and Kung Fu. You take a class and it’s 12:30; you’re getting hungry. But first you hit the Mall to browse at New Dominion Bookshop, where a table upfront features local authors. Then you check out one of the city’s beloved used

elegance or alfresco street scene if the evening is mild? Giving up, you flip a coin and go online to reserve your spot, making a mental note to try one of the puff pastry waffle sandwiches at Iron Paffles & Coffee for breakfast someday soon. The first place you went last night when you were making the rounds of the First Friday gallery shows was the McGuffey Art Center, the Colonial Revival style brick building built in 1916 as McGuffey Elementary School and now on the National Register of Historic Places. Portrait paintings you saw there made you dream of wearing something chic and retro so you go back out and hit Arsenic and Old Lace on 1st Street, where you find a 1980s Saks Fifth Avenue cocktail dress and a 1960s handbag.

booksellers, Blue Whale Books, where the coffee table art volumes in the back room are what tempt you most, along with the intriguing stock of maps and prints. Some other day you’ll look for gifts in the children’s and young adults at 2nd Act Books, or search out old monthly literary journals at Daedalus Bookshop a short block down at 4th St NE. But now for . . . what? You’ve worked hard, so you have room for a milk shake and grilled cheese at Timberlake’s Drugstore and Soda Fountain, a fixture since 1917, with its Rufus Holsinger photos of old Charlottesville, its lunchroom fireplace, and its pressed tin ceiling. You feel like you could fit in both the milkshake and the twice-baked meatloaf at The Nook, “Charlottesville’s Original Diner,” where breakfast is served all-day, every day, seven days a week. The building itself dates to the late 1880s, and a restaurant on the first floor opened 1912. In the ‘30s it was called Club Cafe in the 1930’s; it became The Nook in 1951. Its mahogany booths are original. Instead you opt for a bite with whomever’s around at Common House, a spot where plans are being hatched and history is being made right now. A self-styled “community of creators”— “podcasters, philanthropists, artists, and just allaround doers”—Common House is on a mission “to rebuild the social fabric of communities.” Its building on Market, just down from Light House Studio, where kids learn collaborative filmmaking, is “a common space for people to come together over food, drink and experiences.” This “curated third space” houses a restaurant, a rooftop lounge, a “co-working space,” and maintains “a lively slate of ongoing programming.” “Common House is great,” says Katelyn Mancini with Howard Hanna Roy Wheeler Realty Co. “For a modest membership fee, you get this old-looking Jefferson key and you go in through narrow French doors. It’s almost like a secret society—a lot of people don’t know that it’s there. Everybody is so friendly, they greet you when you come in. inside it’s three levels, with intimate spaces; you can go during the day to have a neat atmosphere for a satellite workspace. The focal point of the main room is a fireplace. Friends and family are welcome as guests. “The chef does things that are outside the box”—think a winter roots bowl, or carrot fettucine— “and there is a bar on the rooftop. They have awe-
some events too, and brunch, …. music at night. I love that they incorporate local artists and businesses. They have a cart of whiskey, local whiskies. They have little events like that, local wine tastings, private dinner parties.” Like ACAC, it has a rooftop pool, with great views of the city. It has a whole lot, the neighborhood does. Back on the Mall, families love the Virginia Discovery Museum with its galleries and hands-on educational play areas designed to foster intellectual curiosity and development for kids of all ages. While difficult recent circumstances have limited activities, programs are still offered, including a free Storytime, outside while the weather permits, at the Ting Pavilion on Monday mornings. Groups of grown-ups can play at Cville Escape Room. There are six game rooms here actually: Archaeologist’s Adventure, Conspiracy X, The Dark Circus, Jack the Ripper’s London, Paris: Le Chat et la Souris, and Sherlock: Moriarty’s Revenge. They sound scary, but they aren’t—the doors aren’t locked and players are free to leave. But the goal, in the 60 allotted minutes, is to use logic and your creativity to find clues, solve puzzles, and open locks. This is interactive problem solving, with 20 or more puzzles in each room, great for building interpersonal communication skills, great for team building. Kids love McGuffey Park playground, across the street from the Art Center, opposite the grey stone and stainedglass windowed Christ Episcopal Church, where the cornerstone was laid in 1895. A block away and up a flight of steps is First United Methodist Church, established in 1834 and situated at its current
location since 1925. Further on down East Jefferson is the beautiful brick synagogue belonging to Congregation Beth Israel, dedicated in 1883, rebuilt in 1904, and given an attractive addition in the late 1990s. Continuing east, one comes to Holy Comforter Catholic Church. Continue to Park Street and you’ll find the First Baptist and First Presbyterian churches. South of the tracks on the site of a former textile factory and warehouse you’ll find big, colorful murals, sculptures and art installations. This is IX Park, where the motto is “Empowering Community Through Creativity.” Workshops and classes, festivals and parties, an interactive art show, and a farmers market, make IX a hub for the creative of all ages.
Live Here Some people love the Mall so much, they’d like to live there—and that’s possible. It just takes a watchful eye. “There is very limited housing above the Mall,” Mancini notes, referring to a handful of loft-style apartments. “They don’t come available often.” Close by are the lofts on Water Street. “They’re really neat too,” Mancini says. And they’re designer-friendly: “I call them a shell. You get walls, but none of your finishes are in there, so you can customize as you like. Some have deck space overlooking the Mall or Water Street—you can hear live music on your deck during Fridays After Five.” The 38 McGuffey Hill condominiums, nestled on a wooded hillside beside the arts center, were built in the 1980s. The oldest condos in the area are at stately 500 Court Square, on a high ridge two blocks off the Mall. One of the tallest buildings in Charlottesville, 500 Court Square commands views of the southwest mountains and the Albemarle County Court House. For buyers looking for more spacious quarters, and perhaps charmingly historical ones, “Park Street is a soughtafter address,” Mancini says. Here too, prospective buyers need patience and perseverance. “People hold onto them. Only two have come on within the last six months.” The median neighborhood price for a home in North Downtown is $425,000, and why not? “It’s the epicenter,” Mancini says. “It’s the nucleus of Charlottesville.”
