FSC Comment: Cables classified to Class Fca may have high levels of flammability due to their materials or designs. For example, cables with a PE sheath that are primarily intended for outside use, such as telephone or duct grade cable, could be tested and classified to Class Fca.
FSC Comment: Similar to Class Cca with lower acceptable heat release rate and burn measurement. Regular factory audits and re-testing add to the cost. In practice, this is likely to be the highest CPR class general application cables will meet.
Fire performance: Moderate fire spread and potentially high levels of heat generated.
Tests: BS EN 60332-1-2 and BS EN 50399, including smoke generation.

FSC Comment: Although this is the least expensive test by an approved independent test body, it still costs many hundreds of pounds. It’s likely that many cables sold in small volumes will only be tested to this class for commercial reasons. Note that this test does not measure heat release, toxic fumes or smoke.
The regulation classifies products into one of seven Euroclasses in accordance with BS EN 13501-6, but in most instances only options B2ca to Fca will apply to cables. (Classes B1ca and Aca may be used in commercial / industrial applications)

Classes Dca, Cca and B2ca also apply to cables. These classes also have additional tests to measure heat generated smoke release and can be further tested for smoke density, acidity of gas given off and burning droplets falling from the cable.
The classes
CPR for cables Most cables designed for permanent installation within domestic, residential, and commercial buildings are now subject to the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), covered by BS EN 50575. This became a legal requirement in July 2017 so it’s important you understand how to stay compliant.
Fire performance: Low flame spread, minimal fire growth & heat release.
Tests: BS EN 60332-1-2 (basic vertical flame test by factory or lab).
FSC Comment: More rigorous test and higher cost than Class Dca but with the additional cost of regular, independent factory inspections, audits and periodic retesting. This is widely accepted across Europe as the ‘go to’ standard, but be aware that many cables in their current form may not meet Class Cca without costly redesign.
BS EN 50575 enables designers and installers to consider the contribution that cables make to the spread of fire. Cables are a particular concern as they run between rooms and floors, above ceilings and are often made from flammable materials. They can also be a source of ignition if badly installed, damaged or faulty.
Additional tests: Smoke test, optional flaming droplets and acidity tests.
FSC Comment: This is an expensive test, costing thousands of pounds, but does not have regular re-test or factory audit requirements.
Who’s responsible?
EU: Goods need to be CE marked. Classes Eca and above need to have been tested/classified by a notified body (EU Only).
In some parts of Europe, the national regulatory body is defining which Euroclass should be used in a specific building or application; the UK has not taken this approach. The publication of the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations July 2018 does not specify Euroclasses for specific applications, however some supplementary standards such as BS 6701:2016+A1:2017 do specify Euroclasses. Specifiers and installers need to ensure the cables they select are appropriate for the fire risk in the building or application and any contractual terms. The publication of BS 6701:2016+A1:2017 gives specifiers, consultants and installers a set of guidelines for telecommunications cables and could be used to form the basis of a commercial contract, although this is supplementary to the IET Wiring Regulations. CPR does not outlaw the use of cables that emit excessive amounts of toxic fumes and smoke in the event of a fire. It’s down to the specifier to select suitable product, such as Low Smoke Halogen Free (LSHF) versions. Circuit integrity cables, such as fire alarm cable (i.e. FP200), are not covered by CPR - this is likely to be some time away.

Since UK withdrew from the EU on 31/01/2020, there are now three different market compliant covers to be considered.
Stay compliant Cables manufactured after July 2017 intended for permanent installation within a domestic, residential or commercial building, or any other civil structure, should have a Declaration of Performance (DoP) available. This document shows critical information such as: Manufacturer’s name Product type By law, manufacturers or anyone importing cables outside of GB need to keep records of CPR compliant cables sold and be able to provide DoP documentation up to 10 years after it was first sold. OXYGENOFC
CCA COPPER CLAD ALUMINIUM CCA is an aluminium conductor or braid wire coated with a thin layer of copper to give the appearance of copper but with electrical characteristics closer to aluminium. There are some applications where CCA conductors are incorporated into the cable design, however none of the cables in this catalogue use CCA.
POLYETHYLENEPE
LSF is a modified PVC compound which gives off less toxic fumes and smoke than PVC in the event of fire. Not to be confused with LSHF cables, LSF cables should be regarded as only slightly better than PVC cables in the event of fire.
STEELSWA WIRE ARMOUR Steel wire armour (SWA) cables are ideal for fixed installations or direct burial in the ground where additional mechanical protection is required.

PE is a form of thermoplastic that offers excellent resistance to moisture and abrasion. Cables with PE jackets are suitable for external applications.
LOWLSHFSMOKE HALOGEN FREE LSHF cables are those which emit minimal levels of toxic fumes and smoke (0.5%) in the event of fire. They are ideal for installations near sensitive electronic equipment or in areas that may be difficult to evacuate.
Always check that cables sold as LSHF are throughout – jacket and cores.
Our duct and external grade cables feature a tough, water and UV resistant polyethylene (PE) jacket over the standard cable. They are suited for external installations such as through ducts or clipped to the outside of buildings.

External Grade Cat 5e & SWA external installations, an extensive range of UV resistant external grade cables are available from the simple commercial grade, where the jacket has been replaced with a black PE, to our super tough double sheathed duct grade version. Ideal for external installations where the cable may be run through ducts or exposed outdoors. For heavy duty applications and where enhanced mechanical protection is required, we offer an SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) version with an additional PE sheath. These are extremely robust cables suitable for fixed installations and direct burial. Duct grade cables are made with a tough, water resistant polyethylene (PE) jacket over an inner PVC jacket. They are ideally suited for external installations where the cable may be run through ducts or clipped to buildings. The double jacket protects against moisture, provides excellent UV protection and gives the cable extra strength. Where you need even more protection, SWA, or steel wire armoured cables, are great for direct burial. The external grade heavy PE jacket offers the same weather protection as the duct grade alternative, however the galvanised steel wire armour safeguards the cable from mechanical or rodent damage and makes it suitable for fixed installations. TruOptic is a range of high performance fibre optic cables for high speed data transfer around the home or building. It’s an ideal solution to ‘future proof’ an installation as it’s able to transfer large amounts of data over much greater bandwidths than traditional copper cabling. It’s also able to carry signal over much longer distances without signal loss.
Fibre is also unaffected by electromagnetic interference (EMI) making it ideal for data transmission in electrically ‘noisy’ environments or to run alongside power cables. Fibre optic cables fall into two categories, singlemode (OS1 & OS2) for long distances and multimode (OM1, OM2, OM3 & OM4) for more localised data distribution. Cables can be supplied with various numbers of fibres, loose tube or tight buffered construction, with or without armours.
Compared to copper data cables, fibre is relatively low cost, lightweight and has small overall diameters for the number of fibres. The cost of terminations or connectors and the electronics at either end can push the system cost up but fibre offers incredible bandwidth and is able to carry vast amounts of error-free information over very small cables. It’s the natural choice in an increasing number of applications.

CABLE ACCESSORIES RJ45 CONNECTORS These ‘easy’ connectors offer faster termination of Cat 5E and Cat 6 with an easier connection system. The patented design allows the pair wires to be inserted directly through the connector and out of the front, allowing for easy identification of the wiring order. The improved connection is achieved through the cable jacket sitting tightly in the rear of the connector, meaning a better contact and the twist rate is maintained. The Premium-line Cat 6A screened RJ45 is a tool-less plug that can be used for faster termination of Cat 6A FTP or F/FTP and Cat 7 S/FTP with an improved connection.
