TRACK & WHEEL – NEWS

Managing Director’s Address Shigeru (Shige) Takatori — managing director

A

big welcome to all readers of this summer issue of Track & Wheel. It has been a very busy year at CablePrice and as 2014 comes to a close I would like to reflect on what has been a very interesting and rewarding year. In the lead up to this year’s general election, consumer spending slowed. However, with the election now behind us, it is encouraging to see business confidence returning to the markets, helped along by a number of large projects of national significance which have recently been confirmed. I am very pleased to announce the international achievement of our staff member Luke Larsen, from our Silverdale (Auckland) branch. Following on from Luke winning the Hitachi Master Technician New Zealand award, he competed in Japan and took out the 2014 world title of Hitachi Most Valuable Service Technician, the first time anyone from New Zealand or Asia and Pacific has won this world title. Everyone at CablePrice is very proud of his achievement, well done Luke on winning this prestigious award. As a company, CablePrice has continued to invest a lot of time and resources into

training our technicians and apprentices. The past 12 months has seen a number of new cadets from all over the country take part in our cadet apprenticeship training scheme with successful results. Another successful achievement this year went to our Nelson Scania service dealer, Lloyd Heslop Motors. It was recognised as the longest serving independent Scania dealer in New Zealand, celebrating 30 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Scania product. Congratulations to Lloyd and his team on this outstanding accomplishment. Throughout the second half of this year we also ran a number of very successful John Deere wheel loader demonstrations around the country. Overall feedback from those who attended was very positive and we look forward to running further product demonstrations in 2015. This year has also seen CablePrice expand on our current product range, with the introduction of Hitachi compaction equipment that is now available from selected branches. The new compaction range is a great complement to the smaller scale equipment that we currently have on offer. We have continued to focus on engaging with our customers directly at

During the year we have continued to concentrate on strengthening relationships and engaging with our customers, along with improving our efficiency and operational capacity to ensure we are delivering value and solutions to our customers. 4

events such as the annual Groundspread Fertilisers’Association conference in Bay of Islands,Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) conference in Wellington that saw Scania as the major sponsor, the 46th running of the annual combined IOQ/ AQA Conference (Institute of Quarrying /Aggregates & Quarry Association) in Whangarei and the popular and wellattended New Zealand Contractors’ Federation conference held in Rotorua. During the year we have continued to concentrate on strengthening relationships and engaging with our customers, along with improving our efficiency and operational capacity to ensure we are delivering value and solutions to our customers. To ensure we deliver on this commitment we continue to employ highly motivated individuals that perform well under pressure and have a passion for delivering exceptional customer service. 2015 is already shaping up to be a very exciting year for CablePrice and associated industries with a number of major projects having already been announced, including Wellington’s much anticipated,Transmission Gully roading project valued at $850 million. With Christmas and summer holidays just around the corner, I take this opportunity to thank customers and staff for their continued support. I wish you all a relaxing, enjoyable Christmas break, safe and happy travels, and a prosperous New Year.

Hitachi technician Luke Larsen wins ‘best in the world’ title In July this year, Luke Larsen took out the 2014 world title of Hitachi Most Valuable Service Technician, beating out strong competition from six other regional winners including Europe, Russia, Japan, China, India and South Africa. Luke Larsen, a master technician from our Silverdale branch, achieved success earlier in the year ranking number one in the New Zealand round of the competition. He then reigned victorious at the Oceania competition, where he successfully took out the title of Asia-Pacific Hitachi Top Technician ahead of Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia,Thailand and Singapore. Luke travelled to Japan at the start of July for a shot at attaining the elusive world title – a feat that has never been achieved by anyone from the Asia-Pacific region during the seven years this event has been running – that is, until now. Shigeru Takatori, CablePrice (NZ), managing director commented,“This is an incredible achievement for Luke being the first person from New Zealand to win this prestigious award. At CablePrice, we pride ourselves in setting the standard in the industry and recruiting the best technicians who possess both great customer service as well as technical skills. This award is a testament to that and we can proudly announce that we have the best technician in the world.” Commenting on his win, Luke said,“I was very proud to represent CablePrice New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region. To win this title was a great honour and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and many peers over the years. The training and support offered by CablePrice and Hitachi was key to my success.” Darren O’Connor, CablePrice technical trainer, mining and construction, also commented on Luke’s success,“During the competition, Luke saw the hard work and dedication he has put in over the past six months come to fruition. The work processes he used in the practical section were able to separate him from the other technicians enabling him to find and repair all of the major

faults, one of only two to do so.A fantastic effort.” The finals took place on Wednesday 2 July and Thursday 3 July at Hitachi’s Tsuchiura Technical Training Centre – around 50km northeast of Tokyo, Japan. The competition consisted of a 90 minute theory test and a 120 minute practical test, which consisted of three major faults preventing correct operation of the machine and ten hidden faults, these hidden faults are often things that are overlooked by technicians but may eventually cause problems for the correct operation of the machine. Contestants finished-up with a ‘reporting test’ where the technicians had to present to a group of around 50 people what faults they found in the excavator and any service or maintenance recommendations they would have for the customer. The winner was announced at a gala dinner held on Thursday evening at the Marrod Hotel and for the first time in the competition history, Mr Yuichi Tsujimoto, president and chief executive officer of Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. Ltd. attended and congratulated Luke. 

National key account manager – commercial vehicles

Craig Pepperell, who was previously working in the role of sales specialist in the lower North Island for CablePrice, was successfully appointed to the role of national key account manager – commercial vehicles earlier this year. Craig is based at the CablePrice head office in Wellington and is responsible for managing a selected group of national fleet customers. “Since starting as the national key account manager – commercial vehicles, I have met with new potential fleet operators and current fleet operators around the country with positive feedback about the role. It is great to be working closer with existing fleet customers and I am enjoying the challenges that have come with the new position,” says Craig. “Our large fleet customers find it easier to deal with one point of contact for their transport needs, which allows me to gain a comprehensive understanding of how CablePrice can add value to their future business, and work with them to achieve this going forward. “I’m confident in the direction that CablePrice is heading with fleet management,” says Craig.“Offering all of our services to existing and new customers will grow the business and provide

a platform on which we can build and strengthen relationships, to ensure we remain a trusted partner in the future.” For the past five years Craig has been selling Scania trucks for CablePrice, where he gained an excellent reputation for customer service and was viewed as a trusted advisor by his customers. Craig has a wealth of heavy transport knowledge and has been around trucks most of his adult life, having started out driving D-series Fords for Hargreaves Transport at the age of 18. He then moved into an operational role liaising with customers and coordinating the dispatch of trucks and drivers. From there, Craig went on to start his own business contracting to Mainfreight Wellington transporting general freight to Auckland daily. During this time he personally owned two Scania trucks, on ScanPlan, each clocking up in excess of one million kilometres. “Having previously been an owner driver, Craig can really relate to our customers because he understands the demands placed on a modern transport operation. Over the years he has also acquired excellent knowledge of the Scania’s numerous features so he is able to advise our customers on how to get the absolute best from their Scania trucks.” says Mark Palmer, general manager sales and marketing, CablePrice.“Craig is a dedicated professional who is very popular with his customers because they know he genuinely wants to help them.” 

CablePrice Cadets 2014 intake For the second year running, CablePrice has undertaken a nationwide intake of apprentice technicians through a rigorous recruitment and selection programme called “The CablePrice Cadets”. To be considered for a cadetship, applicants must first apply via the CablePrice website within a four-week timeframe. This year, the timeframe was between June and July. Applicants were then taken through several levels of selection including interviews, skills and ability assessments and background checks. CablePrice invests a lot of time and resources into our young apprentices and because of this, our expectations of applicants are high. To be successful, applicants must display a willingness to learn, the ability to follow instructions, a positive outlook and work ethic, as well as commitment and motivation. After analysing the results of the selection process, CablePrice was very pleased to offer a cadetship to the top seven candidates to fill trainee technician vacancies in Whangarei,

Auckland, Gisborne, Palmerston North, Christchurch (x2) and Invercargill. The 2014 cadets gathered in Wellington for an induction week in October where they learnt all about CablePrice and had the opportunity to hear from various external providers such as MITO and Southern Cross. They even had a visit from former All Black, Rodney So’oialo and completed their first training course in a state-of-the-art, purpose built learning facility. Now the cadets are back at their allocated CablePrice branch to learn the basics and to be put through their last assessment before being offered a full apprenticeship with CablePrice. The competition this year has been tough and CablePrice is very proud of its 2014 cadets who have put in a lot of work to get to where they are now. It is pleasing to see how many entry level mechanics want to start their career with CablePrice and take advantage of the excellent apprentice programme, facilities, support and career progression that is available.

The dates for the 2015 intake are yet to be confirmed, but you can email hr@cablerprice.co.nz to register your expression of interest today, and you will be contacted when applications open.  CablePrice

30 years

The Nelson-based Scania service dealer, Lloyd Heslop Motors, recently celebrated being in business for 30 years. Lloyd Heslop established his business in 1984 and shortly afterwards was appointed the upper-South Island Scania Dealer by Scandinavian Motors, the New Zealand importer and distributor of Scania trucks and busses at the time. This appointment means that Lloyd Heslop Motors is now the longest serving independent Scania dealer in the country. To commemorate the milestone, an evening function was held where 165 suppliers, customers, team members and truck distributors joined with Lloyd in celebrating 30 successful years in business. New Scania trucks from Nelson Petroleum Distributors,Waimea Contract Carriers and a cab and chassis were on floodlit display outside Club Waimea where the function was held.

Colin Bowden congratulating Lloyd Heslop

Colin Bowden, CablePrice general manager of parts and service, spoke on behalf of all the suppliers to Lloyd Heslop Motors. Colin noted how difficult it is for independent dealers to operate successfully in such a competitive commercial environment and stated that it is a real tribute to the quality of service that Lloyd and his team have provided to

their customers to have been so successful for such a long period of time. On behalf of CablePrice, Colin then presented Lloyd and his wife Jan with a plaque in appreciation of 30 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Scania product. Lloyd also spoke about the challenges and successes of doing business over the past 30 years. He entertained the audience with tales of his early days (and nights) in business and how he was very fortunate to have a dedicated team of mechanics and parts people working with him. Lloyd explained that it was their commitment to always putting the customers first, and working whatever hours were necessary to get their trucks back on the road as quickly as possible that led to his company’s success. Congratulations to Lloyd and his team at Lloyd Heslop Motors on 30 successful years in business. 

New Zealand Contractors Federation Conference From 6-9 August, CablePrice sales and marketing staff attended the New Zealand Contractors Federation Conference at the Energy Events Centre in Rotorua. This annual conference was combined with the two other industry organisations, Association of Consultant Engineers (ACENZ) and Roading New Zealand (RNZ) meaning there were over 300 delegates from prominent companies throughout the industry. CablePrice is a core associate of the New Zealand Contractors Federation and as such, had a strong presence at the conference including a stand in a prominent area of the display hall which this year featured the John Deere wheeled harvester and forwarder simulator, which allowed people to fell a forest during the

breaks in the sessions. The highlight for CablePrice was the sponsorship of the Thursday fancy dress evening which is renowned for being a fun night every year. This year was no exception with the theme being ‘star’ allowing everyone to come as their favourite celebrity or out of space character. The Energy Events Centre had plenty of CablePrice branding with two Hitachi machines at the front entrance greeting people on the way in, a ZX17U-2 mini excavator on a trailer and a new CablePrice service ute from the Rotorua branch at either side of the stage. The sales and marketing team all came as Star Wars characters and helped pick out some of the best dressed, who received Hitachi or John Deere models for their great costumes, topping off an enjoyable night for all.  CablePrice

Hitachi compaction equipment When you mention Hitachi construction equipment, most people think of a range of reliable excavators, wheel loaders and dump trucks. CablePrice is pleased to present this new range of equipment to its customers. Designed to provide high levels of performance and durability, the new models are also easy to operate and maintain. The Hitachi compaction equipment has been designed to suit a number of industry applications, and is said to be the perfect match for councils, hire and rental companies, landscapers, as well as paving, trenching and civil contractors. The new compaction range of Hitachi vibratory plate compactors (ZV40PF/ ZV60PF/ZV80P) and Hitachi rammers (ZV65R/ZV75R) deliver power and performance in a compact package. The Hitachi ZV-PF series vibratory plate compactors utilise safety cushions, a reinforced bottom plate and have a triple vibration-resistant design to deliver high compaction, durability and easy operation. Boasting a low amplitude and high frequency, the compactors are an effective tool in the compaction of cohesive, granular and mixed soils. The plate compactors incorporate a triple vibration-proof design and the rammers have a low vibration handle. Both of these features help contribute to reduced operator hand fatigue by significantly reducing vibrations without compromising on performance.Additionally, these features can be highly advantageous when it comes to safety, by generating greater productivity through longer operating hours. The Hitachi ZV-R series rammers help provide operators with powerful compaction force.A combination of double reinforced base plates and a safety cushion mitigates damage to the machine, particularly in distribution hazards such as drops. Operators will also benefit from improved stability, as well as efficient manoeuvrability in confined spaces due to the compact machine design. Propelling power of the ramming shoes is increased for better controllability on uneven ground. As seen in the vibratory plate compactors, the rammers are ideal in tough site conditions where manoeuvrability in restrictive environments is required. Convenient operation has been achieved through a userfriendly throttle lever and an engine stop switch positioned close to the operator’s hand. In addition, the steel cover offers added protection and durability for the engine. Riki Corley, CablePrice equipment product manager, says, “Compaction equipment is an important addition to the widerange of Hitachi construction machinery now available from CablePrice. I see the compaction range as a natural fit for our customers and it ties in well with our other product offerings of compact worksite products – mini excavator, wheel loaders and skid steers.” 

customer trip In August, Riki Corley (equipment product manager) and Alex Kelly (national sales manager – equipment) led a group of customers on a trip to Moline, Illinois: the home of John Deere. The group consisted of Daniel Reitimana (Totara Contractors), Lars Rosewarne (Rosewarne Contractors), Mike Kier (Schick Contractors), Daniel Topp (Fulton Hogan Tauranga), Luke Frogley (M W Lissette), Paul McCready (McCready Engineering), Karl and Trudy Anderson (Anderson Forest Harvesting), Andy McKinstry (Nelson Operations Manager) and Phil McKenzie (Whangarei Sales Specialist). The trip began with a short stopover in LA to see the sights. The next day saw the group board a plane bound for Chicago and then to Moline. To greet everyone at Moline airport was the host Simon Shackleton, John Deere general manager for Forestry Asia Pacific.

On Tuesday morning, the group departed for Davenport works, which was opened in 1974 and manufactures the rubber tyre machines for construction and forestry, including wheel loaders, graders, articulated dump trucks, log skidders and wheeled feller bunchers (forwarders and wheeled harvesters are built in Finland). After a brief introduction from the tour guides, who were two retired Deere factory employees, the group boarded two carriages towed by a John Deere lawn mower and proceeded around the factory floor. As part of the tour the group were treated to two production line walks – log skidder and wheel loader, where they had the opportunity to see where the chassis’ start the production line and walk through each production station, they also watched the engine, hydraulic components, cabin etc. be

Everyone was surprised to see that it was almost 100 percent hand assembled. The only robotics on the production line was aid and assist with lifting of heavy components or for torque setting of bolts. The quality control that John Deere employs is almost second to none. In the afternoon the group had a tour of another large facility, this time it was the John Deere Worldwide Parts Distribution Warehouse. The size of the warehouse was just over 63 acres and growing. It holds over 800,000 part numbers, it has 99 truck bay doors and this facility employs 1100 staff with 500 alone on the warehouse floor. The Worldwide Parts Distribution Warehouse houses parts for all John Deere divisions – agriculture, construction and forestry. a Deere training facility called Coal Valley, which is a large grassy plain with rolling hills surrounded by fields and fields of Corn. Coal Valley is where John Deere has numerous machines available for training operators and showcasing their product. Basically it is a giant sandpit for adults. Upon arrival, John Deere had already set up an assortment of machines for the group to operate and allowed the customers to spend three hours driving various pieces of equipment; Backhoe loaders, Articulated Dump Trucks, an 850J Dozer, an 844K-II (34-tonne) wheel loader and a 670GP grader, to name a few. After the customers had finished digging holes and pushing dirt, they climbed back on the bus and ventured an hour north to a place called Grand De Tour, which is the historic homestead and workshop of John Deere himself. For those who do not know the history of John Deere, it is not simply a brand, John Deere was a person. He was a blacksmith by trade and is famous for creating the first selfscouring steel plough which broke the

ground of the Midwest Prairie aiding migration to the Great Plains. After a very good blacksmith demonstration, the group was left with this fun fact: If John Deere was actually run over by a tractor back in his day, he would’ve said “what the hell was that?” as tractors were not invented yet, and the first John Deere tractor was not manufactured until after his passing (1886 vs. Deere tractor, 1912). After a rather insightful look into the history of John Deere, the group left for their last stop, the John Deere Worldwide Headquarters, where all the Deere executives and corporate staff are based. The group were joined by a few John Deere executives and treated to a catered dinner in the employees lounge, followed by a brief tour of the building and surrounding complexes. The next day, the group headed to The Dubuque Works, situated an hour north from Moline on the Mississippi. It opened in 1947 and is just over one mile in length. Dubuque works manufactures crawler bulldozers, crawler loaders, backhoe loaders, tracked harvesters, tracked feller

bunchers, knuckleboom loaders and skid steer loaders. Again, we were able to walk two production lines – tracked harvesters (including the 909KH) and dozers. These line walks provided everyone with a true appreciation of the Deere product and the group were able to talk to the employees on the production line and hear their passion for the product and the John Deere brand. By this stage Friday had rolled around and the group were on a plane bound for San Francisco for one last night before flying home to New Zealand. After a final sit down dinner in San Francisco, the guys were quite impressed that they managed to find a bar at 12.30am that was playing the All Blacks vs. Argentina game. A tour of Alcatraz was organised Saturday morning and that night the group departed for Auckland. “Overall, the John Deere customer trip was not only educational, but it was a fantastic experience and it was nice to be able to share this with the great group customers that attended,” says Riki

customer trip In August, a group of CablePrice customers had the opportunity to visit Sweden, the home of Scania. Our customers were joined by three CablePrice representatives – myself (Deon Stephens, national customer support manager), Garry Leitch (national commercial vehicle sales manager), and Craig Pepperell (national key account manager). The first stop on the trip was Bangkok, where the group enjoyed dinner on the 55st floor of an open air restaurant at our hotel (one of Thailand’s top 10 things to do according to Bangkok Magazine), which was definitely an impressive start to the tour.We were greeted with the best service we have ever had, not to mention lovely food. After dinner we ventured into the streets of Bangkok to explore the nightlife, racing in the tuk tuks was definitely an experience we will never forget. The next day, the group had the opportunity to explore the local markets and experience more of the local culture, including watching the All Blacks play Australia on TV in an Australian bar, before we departed that evening for Sweden.

After another 11 hour flight we arrived in Stockholm at 7am.That day, we were fortunate enough to get a tour of Svempas workshop, which is where custom-made, limited edition Scanias get created. Svempas (a contractor to Scania) had many impressive projects on the go, including his latest creation, Chimera. After this we headed to the centre of Stockholm for a guided tour of Swedish history and historic buildings. The next day we headed to Sodertalje, which is where the Scania head office is located. Here, we had a tour of the Scania museum, engine foundry & factory including the chassis assembly line, all of which were amazing and extremely interesting for the group. During the week, we visited the Scania Transport Laboratory – a separate business unit of Scania, which is where they have their own fleet of trucks and are contracted to transport Scania’s products. This enables them to test the Scanias and some competitors trucks for performance and reliability. It also allows them to experience life in the customers

August 2014 shoes and gain insight into what it is like dealing with Scania from a customer perspective. From there we went to the test track which was a highlight for all. There were 16 vehicles lined up, all different configurations, horsepower, applications and were fully loaded, from buses, loggers, tippers and gantry trucks. Everyone had a great time including partners who were just as eager to have a go. John Alexander from Alexander Bulk Gases, commented on the experience, “Needless to say, the test track was one of my highlights of the trip.” We also had the opportunity to travel to the Elmia Exhibition (truck show), where we saw some great examples of the European product. On the final day of the tour, we watched the All Blacks beat Australia at an Irish bar in Stockholm quite a cultural mix! Then we departed for “A Viking Experience” where we visited a traditional village where people lived (part time) as the Vikings did back in the medieval times. This was an amazing experience and offered an insight into the culture of Sweden, from making bread,

All of our experiences during the trip demonstrated how Scania do what they do so well, and how they have become what they are today. We can definitely all appreciate their professionalism and drive to be the best they can be. Overall, we were looked after incredibly well and provided with experiences that we would not otherwise have had. What also contributed to the overall experience was the fantastic group of people we travelled with. John Alexander, one of our customers also provided some comments about his overall experience,“The Scania company culture was very impressive, the value they place on their customers and staff was evident throughout the entire tour.We were also lucky enough to visit the Elmia Exhibition in Jönköping, which is an internationally renowned truck show in Sweden. This was an awesome experience, a day spent there flew by and we could have easily spent more time taking it all in. Scania and CablePrice were wonderful hosts. They looked after us very well and we gained a fantastic insight into Scandinavian culture and Scania as a company.”

ummer is here again. While you sit in your cab and think of Trumpets and days at the beach, take a moment to also think of your equipment or vehicle and the pressures that the cooling system is under. Particularly later model engines that use the cooling systems at maximum, as the cooling system has the biggest drain on the energy your engine produces. As a result, all manufacturers have reduced the effective size of the cooling package, which means that it must be at optimum level to remove heat from the engine unit. As you can imagine, those hot days that we love most about summer put the most stress on the cooling system. So what can be done? First of all check your radiator. Dust, dirt and general debris can block the surface area of the radiator, which can reduce airflow and stop cooling of the engine fluid. This is a simple check and can be done by shining a torch through the radiator – if you can’t see any light then it may be blocked. Be careful washing this down as mud

Garry Leitch, national commercial vehicle sales manager, also added,“Once again this year’s customer trip was a great success. I know that this trip, like previous customer trips, will have a

positive lasting impression on each and every participant. CablePrice and Scania are always delighted to provide this opportunity to our valued customers and we look forward to the next one.” 

can become quickly stuck, causing more harm than good. Also be careful using high pressure as the radiator fins can be damaged. The best way to get this fixed is to get the radiator removed and expertly cleaned. Check your antifreeze content.Antifreeze isn’t just about winter, it’s also about summer.Antifreeze has a higher boiling point than water and as a result it handles heat better. Be sure to check for leaks as this can quickly reduce system pressure and antifreeze content. Check your fan belts and have a look for

belt wear and tightness as this can affect the speed your fan operates at. Last of all check your fan unit and make sure it hasn’t got damaged blades. This will affect its ability to pull air through the radiator and over the engine. If you would like the experienced technicians at CablePrice to have a look at any of these items, they would be happy to help. Halving emissions within five years

I never thought we could could achieve so much when we started our operations. Anders Gustavsson, MD of the Scania Transport Laboratory

Cutting carbon dioxide emissions in half within five years is possible with today’s technology. Driver training, properly adapted trucks and fully loaded trailers have enabled the Scania Transport Laboratory to reduce its CO2 emissions from 70 to 35 grams per tonne-kilometre.

I

t looks like an ordinary trucking company – and it is, but it is a company that specialises in testing and developing the sustainable, efficient transport services of tomorrow. At the Scania Transport Laboratory in Södertälje, Sweden, drivers gather for a coffee break between shifts.A fleet management system here keeps track of where the company’s 40 trucks and six buses are located, and there is a workshop equipped to service its vehicles and trailers. Since it was established in 2008, the Transport Lab has had a dual role. One of its tasks is to serve as an ordinary commercial hauler, transporting a portion of the material flows between Scania’s production units in Södertälje and Zwolle in the Netherlands. “Our other task is to be at the cutting edge – constantly testing and developing new products, services and methods that meet the current and future needs of customers. For this purpose, we receive a financial grant from Scania’s research and development department, which we have frequent contact with,” says Anders Gustavsson, managing director of Scania Transport Laboratory. The company, a subsidiary of Scania, has grown from twelve employees in 2008 to around 100 today. Over a five-year period, the Transport Lab successfully improved its vehicle efficiency in a way that has attracted worldwide interest from the transport sector and trade press.Today, the company’s CO2 emissions are 35 grams per tonne-kilometre, or half the industry average. And its fuel consumption now averages

• Scania launches its new C200 on-board computer, opening new opportunities to monitor trucks and drivers wirelessly in real time.

• Testing of a new “boattail” spoiler on trailers, thereby reducing aerodynamic drag. • Improved filling rate and performance.

2011 • Testing of trailer “sideskirts” to reduce aerodynamic drag. They improve efficiency but require extensive maintenance.

• A larger percentage of Euro 6 engines with more efficient powertrains. • Platooning introduced. • New cruise

control system that predicts road topography.

• A new generation of the Scania Fleet management system. • The system creates new opportunities to monitor trucks and driver behaviour. • Longer vehicles.

Sustainability a part of Scania’s business strategy A halving of energy consumption per manufactured vehicle by 2020, compared to 2010; increased sales of the Ecolution by Scania concept; an updated sustainable sourcing programme; and a ranking as one of the 100 most sustainable companies in the world. 27 litres per 100km, compared to 35 litres at the outset. “I never thought we could achieve so much when we started our operations,” says Gustavsson, who points to several factors behind the Transport Lab’s success. “Properly adapted vehicles that allow us to drive at 80km/h with the lowest possible revs are one key factor.Another is that we make a great effort to maximise the payload on each shipment.A third is that we take full advantage of the toolbox in the Ecolution by Scania concept: driver training and followup of driver behaviour, preventive maintenance and really making use of the latest technical aids such as

Fleet Management systems; and Scania Active Prediction cruise control.” Although the Transport Lab has managed to halve its CO2 emissions per tonne-kilometre in five years, there is potential to reduce emissions further, Gustavsson believes. “We will be increasing our use of vehicle platooning, which results in lower aerodynamic drag and lower fuel consumption. We are also hoping to receive permission from the Swedish Transport Agency to test longer, heavier rigs in Sweden. A 32-metre rig with a gross vehicle weight of 76 tonnes will enable us to achieve even more efficient transport services,” he says.  CablePrice

recommendation from a“local legend”prompted precast specialists Preco to purchase its first ever machine from CablePrice for its Auckland precast yard – a brand new Hitachi Sumitomo SCX550 (55-tonne) crawler crane. “We wanted to upgrade our old hydraulic machine with something a bit bigger that was able to walk with a load. We started looking at second hand machines, when a guy who has been involved with cranes all his life advised us to call Andrew Crane of CablePrice and have a look at some new crawler machines instead,” says Preco’s John Grant. After weighing up the pros and cons, and getting positive feedback from a Welsh firm using the same model, the Preco team settled on the SCX550. “It wasn’t the cheapest or dearest in its class, but was still a more affordable option than some of the second-hand models we were looking at.” Not only was CablePrice national equipment product manager Andrew Crane’s surname rather apt given the purchase, but he was “brilliant”to deal with, says John. “He was particularly helpful when it came to selecting the best set-up of custom features on the crane for our operation.” The multi-purpose Hitachi Sumitomo crawler cranes deliver excellent mobility over many surfaces, and can be used in a broad range of applications, from construction to civil engineering and port handling. The brand is designed under a three key-concept approach of “simple, refined and reliable”– elements John and the Preco team can vouch for. “The crawler crane seems to be a lot less complicated than a truck-mounted crane. It has simple mechanisms which are easy for our drivers to operate.A lot of the bigger cranes come with all the bells and whistles that people never learn how to use.” The SXC 550 is now doing“exactly what it says on the box”, lifting precast segments out of moulds and onto trucks at Preco’s yard. “It is a great little lifter. At the moment we’re making 25-tonne barriers for the Greville Road interchange that it is handling with ease.” John says his operators enjoy using the strong, heavyduty machine, which has an all-weather, well-ventilated and roomy operator’s cab, providing good visibility on the work site. It is also insulated against noise and vibration for added comfort. Around 80 percent of Preco’s work is the production of precast items and complex pre-stressing arrangements designed for large

roading and infrastructure projects. Its products include everything from reservoirs, culverts, bridging and barriers,to general custom-made precast items. In addition to the Greville Road job,the company is currently building a water reservoir for an Albany project for Auckland Wastewater Services. It has just finished making 600 box culverts for aTEL roading project inTauranga. Preco is one of the few companies to provide precast and pre-stressing services on the job site as well as in its yard.It also has a depot inTauranga where its old crane was sent. “Although we don’t intend to move the new 55 tonne crane at this point, it is compact enough to be shifted without too much difficulty if we decide to do so in the future.” John says the SCX550 has delivered seamless reliability and performance since the firm took possession of it in March. “There hasn’t been one issue from the sales and setting up through to the crane’s operation and back up support provided by the CablePrice service team. Normally when you buy something new you expect a few teething problems but there hasn’t been any at all. Some of the new hydraulic cranes are very complicated but this basic, easy to operate 55-tonne crawler crane has proved bulletproof so far. We’re very happy with it.” 

P

ete Dormer loves Hitachi hydraulic excavators so much he reckons he’s got orange in his blood. However it’s not just brand new, shiny machines that get the attention of this Canterbury contractor, whose firm Dormer Construction is a high profile drainage and civil construction specialist in the South Island. His passion also extends to collecting very early machines made by Hitachi. Five years ago, Pete rescued a Hitachi UH12 excavator, which was about to be scrapped by another Canterbury firm. The machine was originally purchased at an international Japanese construction machine expo in 1976, the year after it was made by March Construction. “The machine was in disrepair and the engine had seized. I saved it from scrap, always with the intention of restoring it,” says Pete. A two-year labour of love and considerable investment in the machine has just come to an end, with the 36-tonne UH12 now returned to its former glory.

NEWS “A lot of money, pride and enjoyment have gone into this project. I’m really happy with it,” says Pete, as he hops in the cab in a howling Canterbury southerly and fires it up. He certainly looks at home behind the controls of the excavator which has its original air pressure, oil, engine pressure and amps gauges resplendent with the Hitachi emblem. “What’s unique about this machine is that the controls are air

operated with the foot pedals rather than hydraulic controlled,” he says, swinging the big bucket into action. The engine had to be fully rebuilt, which wasn’t an easy task given it was one of the few excavators made by Hitachi with a Hitachi engine. “The company only made its own engines for a couple of years back in the 1970s so we had great difficulty finding the parts we needed to restore it.A lot of credit must go to Durk from AC Stobie Engine Reconditioners, who put a lot of thought and effort into this very tricky rebuild. We salvaged whatever original parts we could, made a lot of parts ourselves, and compromised on a lot of things we couldn’t buy.” Pete believes the UH12 is now the only machine in the world with an operating Hitachi engine. Its rusted cab has also been fully restored, with new panels and new paintwork making it look as good as new. “Hitachi has been very interested and supportive of the project and contributed to the paint costs, which was great.” Before it was retired, the excavator did a power of work for March Construction, with one of the firm’s operators,Arthur Tocker spending an incredible 22,000 hours behind its controls. The finished product

The Hitachi UH12 prior to restoration

“Arthur took great pride in the machine. It was his baby. He greased it regularly and polished it daily.” Pete estimates the excavator completed at least 30,000 hours during its working life. He is pleased to see the restoration work finally completed. “I’m an impatient person so it’s good to be through the long process and finally get to enjoy the achievement.” He plans to operate the excavator as a working display model at various events in New Zealand and possibly overseas in the years to come. “It will be great to see the UH12 being enjoyed by other people with an interest in classic earthmoving machinery.” Pete says his enthusiasm for diggers and working in the dirt goes back to his childhood. “From the age of five I loved my sandpit. These days the sandpits and toys have just got a lot bigger and more expensive.” He reckons he has owned around 80 Hitachi hydraulic excavators and machines in the 20 years since he started his business Dormer Construction at the age of 17, straight out of school. “It was something I always wanted to do. I had a holiday job from the age of

12 and saved up a lot of money. I hired a hydraulic excavator for my first five months in business, then built up enough funds to go to Japan and purchase my first Hitachi machine – an EX200-3.” He started off doing site works, excavating and small drainage projects, and has steadily grown the business to where it is today – employing 45 staff and operating a large fleet of brand new Hitachi machines, bought from CablePrice sales rep Andrew McCoy. “With good cashflow and reliable machinery I have been able to build up my equity and asset base, and work on projects throughout New Zealand.” Pete has dealt with CablePrice since his earliest days in business. “I’ve never had a cross word with anyone from CablePrice. They’ve always been supportive and have a great sales team and product. Hitachi is definitely the leader in their field when it comes to reliability and productivity.” Dormer Construction was named Canterbury Contractor of the Year in 2008 and 2011.The firm continues to specialise in drainage, earthworks, irrigation, civil construction and demolition works. Its team is currently busy working on a diverse range of projects, including the final stages of demolition works within Canterbury after the earthquakes; being part of the horizontal rebuild of mainly sewer and stormwater infrastructure in Christchurch city; urban development; and rural development including the construction of water storage dams, irrigation projects and general earthmoving. The restoration of the Hitachi UH12 was a challenging project that took longer than expected. However it hasn’t deterred Pete from saving more classic excavators from the machinery graveyard. “I’ve got a UH06-1 and a UH3-DT in the yard that I’m also restoring. Like the UH12 they are great old machines. It’s extremely satisfying to be able to bring them back to life.”  CablePrice

New best

friend T

he best of Finnish and Kiwi ingenuity has been combined in a brand new $1 million John Deere 1470E wheeled harvester, purpose-built for South Otago firm Mike Hurring Logging. The harvester has been fitted with a top-of-the-line, New Zealand-made waratah, and is believed to be the only machine of its size in the world with this set-up. Owner Mike Hurring is rapt with the 1470E which is capable of felling a tree, trimming it and cutting it to lengths in just 30 seconds. He says it has significantly increased productivity at the company’s Blue Mountain thinning site in South Otago. “Our production targets are easily being achieved, and it has great 24

CablePrice

climbing ability. We’re getting greater slopes than we did with our previous track machine which a lot of people don’t believe.”Access to trees is another big advantage over an excavator-based machine, he says. “The concept of the boom set in the middle is far more userfriendly for reaching in, around and through thinnings. The harvester has already exceeded my expectations in terms of productivity and efficiency.” Mike did plenty of research before committing to the 1470E and insisted it was custom-built with the New Zealand-made harvesting head after seeing smaller machines with a similar set up in the United States.

TRACK & WHEEL

“A company we visited at Lake Michigan was matching up 1270 harvesters with New Zealand heads with a lot of success.” Mike also visited the John Deere factory in Finland, and several other job sites in UK/Europe, and Mt Gambia in Australia before committing to the harvester, which has an 11-metre boom and ninelitre engine. At the same time he also purchased a $600,000 John Deere 1210E forwarder and six Hitachi excavators – four ZX250L-5s, a ZX200LC-5 and a ZX135US-3, all from CablePrice. “I’d been thinking about buying the new machinery for some time. It was a matter of matching up the right gear for the application, and justifying the expense.”

Mike has also invested in a new John Deere E-series simulator for a live classroom he is setting up to train forestry workers. Barry Sheat, equipment sales specialist from CablePrice Invercargill, says the simulator has the same features as real forestry machines including the 1470E harvester and 1210E forwarder, allowing trainees to practice every stage of the harvesting process. “The simulator has exactly the same controls, and even replicates the noise of the machines. It is a great tool to teach trainees different work methods and increase their productivity and performance.” When it comes to the 1470E harvester, Barry says speed on the road; manoeuvrability through the trees; climbing ability; operator comfort; and safety, are among its big pluses. CablePrice

25

TRACK & WHEEL

“Track machines are set up for digging holes, whereas this wheeled machine is set up for harvesting. It has a lot more horsepower than a track machine and is designed specifically for what it’s doing,”he says. Barry has been with CablePrice for over 30 years, and has dealt with Mike Hurring Logging nearly the entire time. “We value the relationship with Mike and are pleased to have been able to help with his latest big investment.” Riki Corley, CablePrice’s equipment product manager, says three key features stand out to him on the 1470E – the fact it is a wheeled machine; the rotating cab; and computer software including the TimberNavi system. “The performance of the wheeled machine is right up there and it requires far less maintenance than traditional track excavators. Track gear is quite expensive to replace and wears out quicker than rubber tyres.” 26

CablePrice

He says the rotating, self-levelling cab means the operator is always sitting level, and has far greater visibility than on an excavator. “The cab rotates in the same direction as the felling head which is a huge benefit as the operators only have to worry about what’s going on in front of them. Because the whole machine is stationary and only the cab moves, the risk of hitting the back of the machine on trees in narrow spaces is virtually eliminated.” Operator fatigue is also reduced as they’re not craning their necks to see where the head is going. Riki says the 1470E has an intelligent computer system which manages the waratah head – sending it“all sorts of instructions” including the length and diameter of the timber cuts. “This leading technology comes factory standard in the John Deere machines and is quite unique in that it has been developed by John Deere to work specifically with its harvesters.”

TRACK & WHEEL

He loves it, especially for its ease of operation and smooth, comfortable ride. The machine also has brilliant lighting. We could operate it 24 hours a day.

All information is stored and logged, and can be easily accessed by the operator, company and forestry owner, even remotely via GPS. “The machine’s output can be checked at anytime with the touch of a button.” Both the 1470E harvester and 1210E forwarder come with state-of-the-art TimberNavi software, which provides real time communication between the two machines via GPS. “This technology transmits data from the harvester to the forwarder, providing the forwarder operator with a map of the forest so they can see instantly where the cuts of timber are located. This allows them to go directly to the pile of logs, instead of driving around trying to find them.” Mike Hurring Logging has an operator dedicated to the 1470E, who is “grinning from ear to ear” as he goes about his work, says Mike.

“He loves it, especially for its ease of operation and smooth, comfortable ride. The machine also has brilliant lighting. We could operate it 24 hours a day.” Mike has been in the forestry game since 1986. He has always run his company from Balclutha and now employs around 45 staff. He reckons mechanised harvesting is the way forward in terms of both productivity and safety. And with around 12,000 hectares of local forests to thin, he is already looking to invest in more gear. “Since the arrival of the 1470E we’ve been approached by new potential clients interested in us doing similar work for them. We are in the process of looking at another good second-hand machine to keep things moving.” 

Remote access M

artinborough Transport’s new Scania R620 livestock truck has only been on the road a month, but the team is already impressed with its performance, says Josh Hawkins, who runs the firm with his brothers Daniel and Jared. “Our driver Chris is rapt with it. He’s enjoying the comfort, ease of driving and manoeuvrability, particularly when getting in and out of tricky farms. The truck has been built to the maximum of 49 tonnes fully loaded and is returning really good fuel figures.” Livestock and rural cartage throughout the lower North Island provide the bulk of the firm’s work, although it also operates throughout the rest of New Zealand. With its drivers doing long hours, and often accessing rugged, remote farms, they need the sort of tough reliable workhorse that Scania delivers. Martinborough Transport already has two other R620s in its fleet of 17 vehicles. However the new 8x4 truck towing a five-axle trailer is the company’s first Scania manual, with the other two trucks having automatic opticruise. “Chris was keen on a manual this time, and we thought it wasn’t a bad idea to trial it against the two opticruise units to see if there was any difference on fuel economy. We haven’t been able to do any comparisons yet, but they are all really good trucks,” says Josh.

Craig Pepperell, national key account manager for CablePrice, worked with the Martinborough Transport team on the purchase. As a former truck owner and livestock driver himself, he is in a unique position to provide advice and support to the firm. He says the “high spec” R620 comes with a range of special features to meet their needs. “The Highline cab is the next step up in terms of luxury and comfort. It has a new premium driver’s seat with airbag lumbar supports, bunks, a TV, fridge-freezer and feature wood-grain steering wheel, gear knob and dash. It also has a radio with GPS maps, a new feature released by Scania this year; and a load display that can bring up all the axle weights of the truck and trailer on the dash.” Perhaps the most unique feature of the truck is its remotecontrolled air suspension, which Craig ordered from Scania to help prevent gaps between the truck and trailer, and farmers’ stock races at the time of loading. “On uneven or hilly ground it can be difficult to slide the truck perfectly against the trailer. Sometimes the drawbar can hit up underneath the trailer and you can’t close the gap properly. This can result in stock dropping their leg through and getting injured. When I saw Scania’s remote-controlled air suspension feature I thought it was the ideal solution and it’s working really well. With the touch of a button the driver has the flexibility to lower or raise the truck and trailer so they are perfectly level for stock loading.” With double-decked cattle and four decks of sheep, stability is another vital feature, says Craig.

TRACK & WHEEL

“These trucks are super stable on the road.” Five years ago the Hawkins brothers took over Martinborough Transport from their father Trevor, who started it around 25 years ago. Josh says the firm appreciates the ongoing relationship with CablePrice. “We enjoy really good back-up service from CablePrice, and especially from Craig who always goes above and beyond. He’s great to deal with.” He says Martinborough Transport will definitely consider purchasing Scania again given the brand’s superior stability, comfort, power, efficiency and fuel economy. But for now, the team is still finding its way around the extra features on the new R620. “There is so much we can do with the new truck. We’re just taking it one step at a time and will get Craig down for some more training to help us maximise all its features.” 

Switzers Valley

S

witzers Valley Transport Ltd owner Murray Maslin has a unique approach to business – and a unique approach to the trucks he runs in his company. Since starting the business five years ago out of the small southern settlement of Wendonside, about 50km northwest of Gore, Murray has grown Switzers Valley Transport into a sizeable rural transport operation, with its 14th truck expected to hit the road before Christmas this year. For a business that initially planned to only run seven trucks, Murray admits it’s been an intense few years. “The growing pains are still there, that’s for sure,” says Murray, in typically understated southern fashion. Murray’s role in the business as director and majority shareholder is assisted by two of his longterm employees – Jamie Coote and Andrew Sharp – both of who hold a share in the company. “They own 10 percent each now and the idea is, as I get older and grumpier – and I can be grumpy enough now – they have the opportunity to further their investment in the company with view to longterm ownership,” Murray explains.

Transport It’s a long-term business planning and future-proofing strategy that has already paid big dividends for the company. “Most companies are sitting around saying they can’t get decent guys, but I’ve got a list of people wanting to work with us here,” says Murray. “I see it very much as a family here and I ask them for advice as much as they ask me. “When there’s work to be done, the boys get out and do it, but when I want advice on something, I can ask them and if they have a problem with something or they want to talk to me, we sit down and work it out. “One of the things with doing it that way is that you have to be able to listen… and it works.” The business has a strong rural focus. Even Murray’s nickname ‘Hogget’ reflects the industry that makes up the backbone of Switzers Valley’s client base. Covering a vast area of the strongly rural northern Southland area, the company undertakes a range of transport services

We tow our own trailers and we cover some pretty big distances down here from hauling hay and bulk goods through to livestock and fertiliser. It also runs three Scanias as specialised bulk spreaders. A 2004 P340 4x4 is joined by a pair of considerably more powerful 2014 G440 4x4s – but Murray explains there is considerable rationale behind selecting the larger trucks for the bulk-spreading roles. “We tow our own trailers and we cover some pretty big distances down here,” he says.“There’s nothing worse than being in a bulkie and having to change gears every two seconds, which then stresses the driveline more.

“One of the things about a bulkie is that they only have a life span of about five years because they work pretty hard. For every kilometre you do in a spreader, it’s equivalent to two kilometres in one of the other trucks, so they don’t have it easy. “We’ve chosen the Scanias because they’re the best sowing trucks on the market, which is why we’ve got them,” he says.“The reliability, the driver comfort, they’re economical… basically they get the job done really well for us.” While the Scanias in the fleet are currently only in bulk spreader roles, Murray says his future plans for the rest of the fleet may see more Scanias in the striking blue-and-silver colour scheme of Switzers Valley Transport. Rather than adding more trucks to the fleet though, this will be part of a replacement programme for some of the company’s older trucks. “The new ones will be for bulk haulage and the plan is for Scania to feature there, provided the price is right and we can get what we need to do the job.” 

Key To growth R oss (Rosco) Moore says the investment in large-scale Hitachi gear was the key to his Reefton business growing from a “very small operation” to the leading contracting firm it is today. He went into business in 1995 after working for Francis Mining at its Topline underground mine, and as mine manager at the firm’s Echo mine from 1989 to 1995. “I was a one-man band for years then in 2004 started working back at Echo with my own machines. We had a big strip of overburden to do but my frontline machine was only a 45 tonner and not really up to the job. So I put my balls on the line, borrowed a lot of money and bought a Hitachi 120-tonne EX1200-5C digger and three Hitachi EH1100-3 70-tonne rigid dump trucks.” Rosco says the impact was immediate, with productivity at the site increasing dramatically. The new machines helped Rosco Contractors to more than meet the production rates set by Brent Francis of Francis Mining at Echo and Roa, the company’s other West Coast opencast coal mine, he says.

32

CablePrice

“It was a very good move.At the time there was strong demand for coal and the expansion of the mine took off, along with my business which now employs around 80 men and women.” Rosco liked the EH1100-3s so much he’s recently added another two to his fleet.

We’ve had a good run out of them and the backup support and service from CablePrice is excellent. “They are such a good all-round dump truck, particularly when it comes to size. They will run on almost any site and go well in all conditions.” He says the 70-tonne trucks have proven to be the “perfect match” with his Hitachi 120-tonne digger.

“They are a good match size-wise, with only three or four buckets a pass and the trucks are gone. We’ve had a great run with both in terms of productivity and reliability.” When the coal market slowed, Rosco started to look elsewhere for a project to keep the big gear running, and picked up a five to six year job for Waikaia Gold which operates a sizeable gold mine in Northern Southland, recovering up to 20,000 ounces of gold each year. Last year Rosco Contractors sent a team of 16 to the site, where they are stripping overburden down to the gold wash 17 metres below the surface, and floating a dredge cart in the “massive big hole” with the overburden behind it. “We moved some of the bigger gear down there including the 120-, 87- and 35-tonne Hitachi diggers, three existing dump trucks and have now added the extra two trucks to the fleet.” Rosco says his operators are big fans of the “comfortable, user-friendly” trucks. “They’re tough and rugged enough to do whatever is asked of them.We find they’re also a good match with our ZX870LCH-3 diggers which only

TRACK & WHEEL take an extra couple of buckets to load compared to the EX1200 digger.” Hitachi has designed the strong, reliable EH1100-3 rigid dump trucks to carry the big loads for the big jobs which make them well suited to the heavy duty needs of big firms like Rosco Contractors. Just like Hitachi excavators, the Hitachi trucks feature cutting edge technology and loads of great features that deliver low operating costs, unparalleled productivity, and overall quality through their superior structure and systems designs. The EH1100-3 manoeuvres well on any job site, even at higher speeds thanks to Hitachi’s ACCU-TRAC suspension system. The NEOCON strut used with the suspension system improves operator and component isolation, providing better hauler stability and predictable operational control. Rosco says he is still getting good hours out of his EX1200-5 digger which continues to do a power of work on the mine site, even after six years of hard labour. “We gave the digger a big overhaul in mid-2013 which should see it right for another 10,000 hours. It had already done 13,000 hours before we did anything to it. It is a great machine.” The powerful engine on the EX1200 combines with a highly efficient hydraulic system to offer plenty of excavating power, making it ideal for quarrying or mining applications such as Rosco’s. Its large capacity bucket increases work efficiency allowing it to meet almost any production demand. Rosco says the bulk of his team is currently split between the mine sites at Roa, Echo and Waikaia Gold, with other staff working at his own alluvial gold mine

and opencast coal mine in Reefton, or on several other smaller jobs. “They’re spread everywhere.” The company has an extensive plant list which features a number of brands, although Rosco is a big fan of Hitachi, with 29 of the brand’s machines on the fleet. “We’ve had a good run out of them and the backup support and service from CablePrice is excellent. I’ve known the sales rep Andrew ‘The Real McCoy’ since he was an apprentice nearly 40 years ago. We’ve got a good relationship and if there is ever a problem it gets sorted quickly. We also have a standing joke that if we go out for lunch after the business talks, he pays, as they are all ‘pre-paid’ lunches.” Rosco has other business interests, with all four of his adult children and their partners involved in one way or another.

His eldest son Daniel is the West Coast Operations Manager for Rosco Contractors; second son Craig is a builder and rugby player who recently made the Heartland rugby team to play in the Pacific Islands tour. Craig also builds and manages any building work for Rosco and he and wife Connie are expecting their first child soon. Aimee, Rosco’s daughter has two young children and looks after the administration and accounts for Tasman Helicopters which Rosco owns. Her husband Bevan is the site supervisor for Roa, while Logan, Rosco’s youngest son runs Tasman Helicopters and pilots the EC120 Helicopter. Logan’s partner Loren also works for Rosco, looking after the payroll at another business Reefton Tyres. “It’s great to have them all working alongside me.” Rosco’s partner Jackie manages the company’s human resources and health and safety, and has put policy and quality management systems in place that were needed for the business growth over recent years. “We have a great team of staff on board, with the majority of them being able to do multiple jobs. They are an integral part of the business.” Although the mining sector is having its ups and downs, Rosco is happy with how his business is running and has no regrets about adding to his fleet of EH1100-3s. “Having the five trucks on-site is giving our productivity another big boost. I continue to be impressed by these versatile, fit-for-purpose trucks.” 

Cementing the future Don McNeil pours on the praise for his latest Isuzu.

U

pper Hutt Ready Mix has grown consistently since Don McNeil started the family-owned firm back in 1996 with just a couple of trucks. Now the company has a good-sized fleet of Isuzu trucks painted in the company’s familiar white and maroon colours, which are a regular sight around the wider Wellington region. The McNeils currently employ eight staff and run nine Isuzu trucks with concrete bowls from their concrete plant at Te Marua, 30 minutes north of Wellington, as well as an Isuzu truck and trailer unit for carting bulk aggregate. These days Don is kept busy running his own general contracting business, so has handed over the reins of the concrete plant to son Hamish who manages its day-to-day operations and ensures the firm’s products meet the highest standards. He recalls purchasing the first Isuzu for the ready-mix plant back in about 2003 and has been buying them ever since. “I reckon the Isuzu trucks are spec’d up better than the others. I’ve had a really good run out of them and have no problem recommending them to others.” Don says power take-off (PTO) that is able to run continually is essential for the firm’s concrete trucks. “Isuzu is one of the few brands on the market that come from the factory with LiveDrive PTO.”

34

CablePrice

The latest addition to the company’s fleet is an eight-by-four, twin steer, FYH350MS manual with a powerful 257kW Euro 5 engine. It delivers the much needed 1422Nm (max) of torque at 1400 rpm, driven through an Eaton 11 speed manual gearbox with a low crawler range gear. “This truck is ideally suited to those hard-to-get-to places which can be a regular challenge given Wellington’s steep terrain.” The Isuzu F-series trucks are well known for their driveability and performance. However driver comfort and safety are not forgotten either thanks to the air suspended, auto weight adjusting ISRI driver’s seat, electric heated power mirrors ideal for those early winter morning starts and Isuzu’s Media Centre including a 6.2-inch multi-colour touchscreen, MP3 connection and Bluetooth hands-free. The full integrated climate control system with four speed fan in the truck provides a comfortable environment for the firm’s team of drivers whatever the weather. Don’s business philosophy is very much aligned with that of CablePrice, he says. “It all comes down to service. You look after your customers and they’ll look after you. During nearly 20 years in business we have prided ourselves on delivering good honest service and value. Having the right gear is a big part of that.” 

Isuzu trucks play a key role in keeping Wellington’s unique trolley bus network fired up.

S

ince the late 1940s, the Wellington trolley bus network has been an integral part of the city’s fabric, and it continues to be relied on by thousands of commuters every day. However without reliable overhead power cables, owned and maintained by Wellington Cable Car Limited (WCCL), passengers on the network’s 60 trolley buses would be going nowhere fast. It is vital WCCL has the right gear to maintain its overhead line network, which is where CablePrice and Isuzu trucks come into the picture. For more than 10 years WCCL has trusted Isuzu trucks from CablePrice to help keep the trolley bus network running smoothly, says Andrew Creswell, the company’s traction services overhead manager. “We’ve always found Isuzu’s to be a good, reliable truck and have clocked up over quarter-of-a-million kilometres since we started using them. They provide great value for money.” He says these reasons made it an easy choice for WCCL to stick with the brand when it came to modernise its truck fleet recently. And just like the Wellington trolley buses, the Isuzu trucks being used to carry out this work are unique. WCCL’s two new 176kW, 4x2 FRR600s have been set-up as EPV or elevated platform vehicles. Each truck is equipped with a large motorised platform that can be rotated 360 degrees once it is raised up. “This raised platform design dates back to the 1970s but with a little modernisation, still works well today,” says Andrew.“The EPV enables our crews to park the Isuzu in a ‘normal’ car park,

Power to the people

raise the platform, rotate it around 90 degrees out over the road and work on the overhead lines, all while allowing the traffic to move underneath in a controlled fashion. This limits interruptions to Wellington’s traffic flow.” The two FRR600s may not do a lot of mileage each day, however they carry out a lot of stop-start work given they’re predominately working in the CBD. For this reason CablePrice specified the two trucks with Isuzu’s AMT or automated manual transmission. “The guys love the automated transmission and couldn’t imagine going back to a manual now,” says Andrew. The latest addition to the WCCL fleet is a 4x2 FTR750M with a low emission 191kW Euro 5 engine. It has been set up as a pole truck and fitted with a remote controlled HIAB. “With some 3500 transport poles in the network, this new Isuzu is always on the go and is proving to be a really nice bit of kit,” says Andrew. Given the importance of the work carried out by WCCL’s Isuzu fleet, the company has placed a lot of faith in the brand and the backup and support offered by CablePrice. “We are very happy to be using the next generation of Isuzu trucks which will continue to be a familiar sight around the Wellington CBD as they undertake their daily operations.” 

Rigid frame dump trucks In purchasing Euclid (a rigid dump truck brand synonymous with the mining industry), Hitachi was able to expand its line-up of mining products, with a world-leading range that perfectly complements its hydraulic excavators. Hitachi AC-drive technology, developed by Hitachi Limited, provides truck performance with a higher top speed, better gradability and stronger retardation. These features increase the trucks’ productivity and uptime, while reducing operating and maintenance costs, all of which equates to a lower cost per tonne of material moved. Engineered for performance, designed for comfort and built to last, Hitachi rigid dump trucks make even the toughest jobs look small. MODEL

Mining excavators

Hitachi is one of the world’s market leaders in large hydraulic excavators. Combining engineering excellence with a dedication to quality, Hitachi makes tough, long-lasting machines that meet

the challenges of mining. Hitachi’s large excavators range in size, from 80 to 800 tonnes. With the ability to keep running for 24-hours straight, these machines have exceptional durability.Their endurance is further proven by the ultra-large excavators, which have working-time records of over 90,000 hours. This kind of performance is not surprising when you consider that Hitachi’s corporate policy is to never release equipment that is not ready for the field. In mining, cost-efficiency is all important, and Hitachi’s excavators provide one of the lowest cost-per-tonne options for moving materials in their class. Low maintenance and long lifespans make for machines that give you significant savings!
