MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE AND DIRECTOR

Thank You

YOU’VE MADE A DIFFERENCE TO MORE THAN

CABRINI PATIENTS

We are proud to share that over $18M was contributed by our donor community in the last 12 months – every gift, big and small, is making a difference for patients and staff across our hospital sites and transforming patient care.

You’ve invested in vital cancer research projects, state-of-the-art surgical robotics and ultrasound machines and scholarships for aspiring nurses and allied health professionals. Donations have also enabled significant refurbishments of Cabrini’s wards and operating theatres. These contributions are making a huge difference to the lives of the 94,000 patients who come through our doors each year.

We are excited to share the news that the Cabrini Health Board has approved Stage 1 of the redevelopment of Cabrini Malvern, with building works already commenced. The projects in Stage 1 include the construction of four new operating theatres and a third cardiac catheter laboratory; the reconfiguration and refurbishment of the Emergency Department; and progressing with town planning approval for a new 4-storey building to be constructed over the existing car park on Wattletree Road.

Thank you for your incredible support and for being part of the Cabrini family. Together, we are investing in Cabrini so that we can continue to provide you and your loved ones with the very best in healthcare, now and into the future.

We sincerely thank the voluntary members of the Cabrini

CABRINI Research

THE MORE WE UNDERSTAND THE BETTER WE CAN TREAT

Cabrini Research has led medical research at Cabrini for more than 25 years. Our clinicians and researchers work side by side to tackle some of the largest challenges in healthcare.

The annual Cabrini Foundation Grants Program allows researchers and clinicians to pursue medical breakthroughs that can improve outcomes for patients now and in the future.

This year, six Cabrini Foundation Grants were awarded, two in cancer and four in general research categories. These will allow:

MEDICAL ONCOLOGY

DR DILYS LEUNG

Mapping gene expressions at the single-cell level through spatial transcriptomics, to better define the drivers behind breast cancer growth.

DR EVA ZOPF

CARDIOLOGY NURSING

PROFESSOR PETER KISTLER

Investigating the benefits of structured yoga programs as a nonpharmacological, non-invasive complementary intervention for atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat).

Conducting exercise trials for melanoma patients receiving immunotherapy and evaluating their impact on clinical outcomes.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR ALEXANDR VOSKOBOINIK

Examining the impact that catheter ablation procedures have on sexual function.

PROFESSOR PHILIP RUSSO

Implementing a novel algorithm designed to identify patients developing surgical site infections.

ALLIED HEALTH

JAMES SHERWOOD

Implementing a new clinical care pathway for lower back pain management.

We congratulate the recipients and look forward to their future contributions in improving patient outcomes in their respective fields.

Cabrini offers a wide range of clinical trials studying new ways to prevent, diagnose or treat conditions and diseases.

DID YOU know?

Clinical trials bring medical advancement through research one step closer to improving patients’ quality of life. Most of the treatments, devices, or interventions we rely on today are a direct result of clinical trials – they provide the key to empowering breakthroughs in healthcare.

CABRINI EXPANDS PRECISION CANCER THERAPIES

Cabrini is set to transform cancer care for Victorians, thanks to a game-changing $10 million donation. In partnership with Monash University, we will establish a cutting-edge genomic testing program providing personalised, precision treatment for up to 2,000 additional patients annually.

The generous $10 million donation from the PMF Foundation was inspired by the personal experience of a patient under the care of Professor Gary Richardson OAM, Group Director of Cabrini Research and medical oncologist at Cabrini Hospital, who also holds a professorial appointment at Monash University.

PMF Foundation Managing Director, Nicola Clyne, said: “The patient personally credited Professor Richardson and the Cabrini team with significantly prolonging their life using genomic profiling throughout their treatment. Their vision was to make a pledge that enables more people with cancer to extend their lives in the same way.”

Professor Richardson, leveraging his oncology and genomic research expertise, will lead this transformative initiative at Cabrini. He said: “Through broader, more comprehensive genomic testing panels, our clinicians will be able to precisely identify and target the unique genetic drivers of each patient’s cancer – a crucial step in delivering the most effective, tailored care.”

“Currently, whole genomic testing requests can take up to six months with patient costs up to $4,000. Thanks to this generous donation, we aim to reduce this to just weeks by creating the capacity to serve more Victorians in Melbourne’s south-east corridor and beyond,” adds Professor Richardson.

The $10m in funding will be allocated to Cabrini in partnership with Monash over the next five years, establishing the infrastructure to screen over 2,000 additional Victorians genomically per year (1,000 during the first year of operation). The program is expected to begin treating patients in 2025, including public patients who may have previously been unable to afford such specialised testing.

“If patients enter a system with closer monitoring and access to genomic sequencing, it’s proven they do much better,” Professor Richardson said. “This donation represents a significant step forward in the fight against cancer.”

CABRINI INNOVATES IN CARDIAC SURGERY

A PRIVATE HOSPITAL FIRST IN VICTORIA

For 50 years, Cabrini’s Cardiac Care team has ensured your heart is in good hands. We were one of the first private hospitals in Australia to provide 24-hour acute cardiac care. Now Cabrini Health has become the first private hospital in Victoria to perform endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH) for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery.

This innovative technique, led by Cabrini

Cardiothoracic Surgeon Mr Adam Zimmet, marks a significant advancement in cardiac care and patient recovery.

“Traditionally, vein harvesting involved making a long incision from just above the ankle to the groin, sometimes extending 15 to 30 centimetres in length,” Mr Zimmet explained. “With the new EVH procedure, we only make two small incisions.

“For patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery, the EVH procedure means less pain, faster wound healing, barely visible scars, reduced complications and quicker recovery times,” Mr Zimmet said.

Professor Matt Sabin, Cabrini Group Director of Medical Services and Clinical Governance said the introduction of EVH represents another exciting evolution for Cabrini’s cardiac services.

“Coronary artery disease takes a heavy toll on the heart and for some patients a bypass operation brings new hope. This breakthrough EVH technique makes vein harvesting easier on our patients and offers a life-changing chance to regain heart health quicker through improved mobility and recovery times.

“There’s potential for further expansion of our EVH program at Cabrini, and this development paves the way for broader adoption in the private sector across Victoria and beyond,” added Professor Sabin.

The introduction of EVH at Cabrini has been made possible thanks to the generous support of Cabrini Foundation donors, who funded the first ten procedures and purchase of the technology required.

Cabrini Cardiothoracic Surgeon Mr Adam Zimmet (in red theatre cap) conducts one of the first Endovascular Vein Harvesting surgeries.

CABRINI PIONEERS UNIQUE BRAIN CANCER SERVICE

AFL LEGEND TELLS HIS WIFE’S INSPIRING STORY

Cabrini’s ‘Neuro-oncology At Home’ service stands as the only one of its kind in Australia and one of only a few such initiatives globally, it’s revolutionising the way brain cancer patients receive treatment and support for primary malignant brain tumours.

Denise Bartlett’s story, shared by her devoted husband, Kevin, is a testament to Cabrini’s world leading service, and the team’s remarkable dedication.

Denise and Kevin shared 54 wonderful years of marriage, blessed with four children and nine grandchildren, before she passed away in March 2024. Denise was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour at the brain stem. It looked like she might need to be move to a care facility. However, Denise wished to spend her remaining time at home, surrounded by her loved ones. Thanks to the compassionate efforts of Cabrini’s staff, their home was transformed into a fully equipped hospital room, complete with a hospital bed, ramps, and specialised equipment, making her wish possible.

While home-based services continue to gain traction in the healthcare sector, Cabrini’s program evolves the model and brings chronic disease management and specialised neuro-oncology care directly to patients’ homes. This unique approach not only enhances the quality of life for patients but also represents a significant leap forward in personalised healthcare delivery.

Kevin recounts: “I thought Denise would have to go to a care facility due to her initial decline. However, Cabrini’s support in setting up in-home hospital equipment, including guidance around care allowed us another two years together. It wouldn’t have happened if Cabrini hadn’t facilitated everything.”

A key component of this groundbreaking service is Cabrini’s equipment bank, made possible by the generosity of Cabrini Foundation donors. This resource allows patients to borrow specialised equipment, enabling them to receive hospital-level care in the comfort of their own homes. For Denise, this meant transforming a room in their house into a fully equipped hospital room with necessary medical equipment.

The program goes beyond just medical care. It includes weekly allied health sessions, (physiotherapy and occupational therapy) and through persistent encouragement and tailored exercises, helped Denise regain mobility and enjoy activities she loved, such as attending AFL games and going on family holidays. This holistic approach ensures that patients can live life to the fullest, despite their diagnosis.

“We were able to visit family, attend Tigers games, grand finals, concerts, and even go on a holiday to Queensland. All made possible by the nursing team, doctors and physiotherapist. The Cabrini team also attended Denise’s memorial service,” said Kevin.

The success of this program is a testament to Cabrini’s commitment to patient-centred care and innovation in healthcare.

Kevin’s story and heartfelt gratitude highlights how the team’s dedication allowed Denise to live fully despite her illness. Their compassionate care enabled her to remain at home, surrounded by her family, until her peaceful passing.

YOUR GIFT.

Your Community

Community

In 2024 your support made a significant impact on the health of the community. Thanks to you, Cabrini continues to provide world-class treatment with the latest medical technology. You’ve sparked innovation and empowered critical research. Thank you once again for your kindness and generosity. We could never achieve this without you.

Thank you for sharing your words of gratitude via our supporter survey; we are delighted to capture just a few of your voices here.

YOUR IMPACT MAGNIFIED

The collective generosity of our donor community magnified its impact yet again! Together with a generous bequest gift, we raised $650,000 to purchase a new Zeiss Kinevo 900 robotic microscope for neurological surgery at Cabrini.

This cutting-edge robotic visualisation system improves the efficiency and effectiveness of neurology and spinal surgeries. Cabrini specialists treat 1,400 neurology surgery patients every year.

The Zeiss Kenivo 900 robotic microscope is a powerful tool with many key benefits, including:

1. Enhanced visualisation – High resolution 3D views allow for clarity and precision during the most intricate of procedures, such as brain surgery.

2. Extensive functionality – Plasma screens allow theatre nurses to monitor the procedure in realtime. It also ensures participants can observe the surgery as it unfolds for transparency and enhanced teaching opportunities.

3. Minimally invasive – Image guidance technology allows for smaller incisions with less trauma to surrounding tissues and improved patient outcomes.

From this one piece of equipment, hundreds of lives are positively impacted. Thank you for embracing precision technology, to deliver precision healthcare.

“Love Cabrini. Been using the hospital for 76 years and have no complaints.”

“I always feel ‘safe’ at Cabrini and have faith in the staff. Also appreciate the Chapel. Palliative care is exceptional - thank you.”

“So grateful to have access to fabulous healthcare at Cabrini”

“I would like to thank the staff for their wonderful care”

“Nursing staff are ‘saintly’!!”

“Cabrini is a very important asset to our community. We are lucky to have you. So thank you for all you do and I try to help when I can.”

YOU EMPOWERED CRITICAL RESEARCH

Discoveries made in Cabrini Research labs improve health outcomes for everyone. Thanks to donor funding, Cabrini conducts clinical trials, a genomics program, and researches cancer, cardiac, orthopaedics and mental health.

Professor Gary Richardson OAM, Group Director of Cabrini Research, says the tenacity of our researchers – together with the continued generosity of our donors – has allowed us to challenge conventional wisdom, foster creativity, influence medical practice and save countless lives.

“A lot of our research is only possible thanks to our generous donors” says Prof Richardson. “They’re the lifeblood of Cabrini and we’re fortunate to have incredibly generous people supporting our work. Some of the most transformative and exciting breakthroughs have happened as a direct result of philanthropic investment.”

On behalf of the many patients here at Cabrini who will benefit from this research, thank you once again for your commitment to improving health outcomes for everyone.

“I have always been impressed by the professional empathy and attention of the staff at Cabrini Brighton.”

STAFF TRAINING IN FIRST RESPONSE AND ADVANCED RESUSCITATION

Thanks to donor funding, more than 100 Cabrini staff across our maternity, emergency and paediatric teams have recently renewed their newborn resuscitation qualifications by completing the First Response and Advanced Resuscitation training.

The ‘NeoResus’ program is a specialised training program that has been designed to standardise the way in which Australian healthcare professionals are trained in newborn resuscitation. Cabrini’s expert teams were provided with assessment, intervention and crisis resource management skills, which are evidence-based and transferable between healthcare services.

All of our specialist doctors and nurses are committed to ongoing professional development in the latest techniques and best-practice care.

“I put my trust in Cabrini to assist with our health and care.”

“The nursing staff provided most special care and comfort to my wife in the final period of her life. We are most grateful as a family for Cabrini for the comfort provided to her in her final time with us. Thank you.”

“Cabrini stands out for the care and service we have received over so many years. Giving regularly is our way of showing our gratitude.”

THE TRANSFORMATION OF CABRINI MALVERN IS UNDERWAY

The Stage 1 projects will include:

• construction of four new operating theatres

• construction of a third cardiac catheter laboratory

• reconfiguration and refurbishment of the Emergency Department

• progressing town planning approval for a new 4-storey East Building to be constructed on Wattletree Road

The transformation of the Malvern hospital will create an enduring asset to the future of Melbourne’s healthcare by increasing capacity, strengthening capability and future proofing the hospital.

The redevelopment is also addressing ageing infrastructure to improve the facilities and environment across the Malvern site. Currently, 20% of beds at Malvern are in four-bed rooms. We are continuing to refurbish existing wards and rooms from four and two bed wards into single bed wards, each with an ensuite.

IN JUNE 2024, THE CABRINI HEALTH BOARD APPROVED STAGE 1 OF THE MALVERN REDEVELOPMENT. YOUR GIFT.

Through the generosity of donors to date, both the Palliative Care and Cardiac wards have been refurbished so more patients are being cared for in private, single rooms with an ensuite.

Louise Alexander, Executive Director Malvern said “It is critical that patient and staff safety is at the forefront of everything we do. Four bed wards are no longer suitable and we are committed to provide the best facilities for all patients.”

For generations to come.

CAROL AND DOUGLAS MCDONALD

YOUR LEGACIES LIVE ON FOREVER AT CABRINI.

Doug MacDonald grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. Spurred on by those tough times, Doug and his wife Carol were determined to achieve success, building their car businesses from the ground up.

“I was born in an era when it was a struggle to survive. There was hardly any healthcare and you couldn’t afford to go to the doctor,” shared Doug. “I reckon I’ve been to Cabrini about 20 times. I like it here. The people at Cabrini are the only people I’ve trusted in my life while growing up and needing help. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”

“That’s why I’m using my Will to support the development of Cabrini. We need to be investing. I want to see the hospital get bigger and bigger, and be as efficient as it can be,” emphasised Doug.

Doug’s wife Carol felt reassured and in good hands when coming in to Cabrini for care. “Cabrini is the only hospital I would ever go to,” agreed Carol.

For 20 years, Cabrini cared for both Carol and Doug. From knee reconstructions to brain surgery. Now the couple are looking after Cabrini. United in their gratitude, Carol and Doug understood the difference investing in Cabrini’s growth would make, by leaving a gift in their Wills to Cabrini.

Doug passed away in Cabrini Palliative Care in 2022. And Carol followed not long after in 2024. Together again. Their generous gift will be acknowledged within the upcoming redevelopment of Cabrini Malvern, bringing compassionate care for generations to come.

Vale Carol and Doug McDonald, your legacies will live on at Cabrini.

Cabrini Society

THANK YOU FOR SAFEGUARDING OUR FUTURE.

A planned gift to Cabrini – also known as a bequest – means including Cabrini as a beneficiary in your Will. It is a very special way that a growing number of grateful patients are choosing to say thank you to Cabrini for care received.

At a Cabrini Foundation donor gathering in 2024, Sylvia Falzon, Chair of Cabrini Health Australia, launched the new Cabrini Society.

“It’s good to see so many of you here today. It’s a chance to come together and for us to show our gratitude.

As well as being Chairman for Cabrini Health, I also Chair the Foundation Board – because I believe that Cabrini’s position today could not have been achieved without the generosity of donors past, present and future.

The Foundation has a growing number of supporters who have included a gift to Cabrini in their Will. The funds that Cabrini receives from such incredible gifts has been steadily increasing in recent years.

“It is my pleasure to officially launch the new Cabrini Society.”

The Cabrini Society gives us an opportunity to personally thank you and involve you during your lifetime.

Society members will receive a new Cabrini Society pin, updates and invitations to events like today and the end-of-year luncheon.

Gifts in Wills of all sizes provide vital support that allows Cabrini to provide the very best healthcare, now and into the future and give us the runway to develop strategies that future proof the hospitals.

Supporters who make these extraordinary gifts give heart to everything we do.

So on behalf of the Cabrini Board I say thank you – and welcome to the Cabrini Society!,” Sylvia shared.

Thank you to all of our Cabrini Society members. You play a vital role in continuing our mission and safeguarding our future.

Sylvia Falzon Chairman Cabrini Health Australia
