:: Man’s unquenchable thirst for oil has driven conglomerates to the far, extreme corners of the globe in search of ‘black gold’. The north Alaskan coastline region is rich in oil deposits ready for the taking. One problem; The environment is below freezing near year round, months of pure light followed by months of pure darkness not to mention the constant battering of blizzards associated with the 100km/h+ winds. You must also deal with constant break-up (and freeze) of sea ice and of course the immense physical pressure exerted by the ice. These conditions demand the latest and highest quality machinery and technology, which is in constant need of refurbishment and replacement. But what is the toll taken on the human body? How well do you need to prepare for living and working in such conditions? And how can you improve this quality for human life? Our proposal consists of a constantly morphing training and research facility directly related to this environment, in this environment. The building will act as a research station to assist oil exploration teams and provide training and retraining to new and current employees of the Shell Oil Company. Shell is also interested in maximising profit through the use of employment longevity and satisfaction. They are interested in improving the quality of life of all persons in this secluded environment, the facility will also act as a base for this particular research. The buildings primary physical shift is derived from the required programmatic spaces based on the constantly fluctuating population. The building will run at full capacity in the winter period to assist oil exploration and complete required training tasks in the appropriate environment, the need of space associated with the winter period will force the build to swell to maximum volume. Alternatively in the summer period when there is no need for certain spaces to exist they simply won’t, the building will shrink to its minimum volume, roughly some 33% of the winter period.

Through rigorous exploration and testing a tensegrity structural system was chosen to resolve the constant massive shifting of space and program. Using a thermal shape memory alloy the tension members in the tensegrity system will increase their inherent force when subjected to superchilled air, harvested from the site using a vent component system, thus allowing the user (or natural forces when applicable) to control the movement of space and program. As part of the sensorial research element to the program the building will attempt to not only constantly change its volume and form but its surface displacement and colour dependant on user input, random value, program or as a research requirement. As an example the residential spaces may potentially be smooth curves with red or orange colour tinges generated by the user to create a comfortable warm environment. However, the arctic survival unit may be harsh edges with a pale blue hue to accentuate the environment it attempts to mimic. Seasonally the space, form, volume and program shift dependant on the varying user requirements generating an internal force pushing outwards when requiring more space. The internal force finds a state of equilibrium only when matched by an equal opposing climatic external force, this shift is augmented by site specific conditions eliminating the need for excessive weight and energy use through motor systems. Simply the building is continuously shrinking because of the environment pushing upon the structure, and will only stop shrinking when the user requires more space due to increasing population or program and settle at this equilibrium of states.
