Cube house, Rotterdam, Neither land: Innovatively Groundbreaking Architecture always bound by challenging the conventions. At times this challenge can go one of the two ways, either impresses or backfires. Pushing the boundaries is something an architect faces at least one in a lifetime. The present one has also break the typical housing norm and swent one step ahead with loads of appreciation. It is the Cube House, situated in Kubuswoningen of Oude Haven which holds a historical significance for the Rotterdam. Oude Haven has seen the bombing of 1940 which destroyed the place drastically. In 1974, with the change in government, Hans Mentink – in charge for the spatial planning appointed leading architect Piet Blom to design something which should be different than usual housing norms. Piet Blom was already got fame for his cubic houses in Helmond and the he is going to apply in Kubuswoningen. The construction of Cube house has started 1982 and completed in 1984.

The concept of Cube house was “living as an urban roof” which quite evident in the design itself. The houses are in the shape of cubes which are tilted at the 45 degrees and planted on a hexagon shaped pylon. Blom’s goal behind the houses was to make a village within a city where the each house seems as a tree and together they form a forest. The house consist of three floors- 1) top most floor can be used as a garden, 2) second floor consist of two bedrooms and bathroom, 3) living room and open kitchen lies in first floor & 4) lastly the ground floor contains entrance. The walls and windows are tilted at 54.7 degrees. Each house has taken the total area of 106. Square

meters. It was constructed as a timber frame outline which was covered by rock wool, cement and wood-fiber board. Other than the main housing unit, the additional ones are show cubes which used as sample cube for curious visitors, a chess piece museum opened in 2006 and a hostel cube which was opened in 2009. This cube house has turn out to be an inspiration for Dutch designers to come up with some innovative ideas at international platform.
