Century Furniture- Consulate

An ageless love story, captured in wood

Century’s new Consulate Collection reflects the power and the passion of two of the greatest lovers of all time… Napoleon & Josephine.

Power and passion. They’re two sides of a rare and splendid coin. When they come together in just the right way, amazing things are born. And sometimes, the power and passion that defined an empire can traverse the ages and wend their way into homes some 200 years after the fact.

Consulate is inspired by the furniture designs following the French Revolution. Broadly speaking, this was the age of Napoleon Bonaparte, who came to power in 1790 and was finally defeated in 1815. And, just as Josephine’s love inspired Napoleon, the romance of the French Empire inspires Century’s new collection.

This was an unusually robust period for art and furniture. The resurgence of classic Greek, Roman and Egyptian forms from Napoleon’s conquests. The overall effect was a “paring down” of excess. Almost militaristic in its precision, the furniture of the time nonetheless conveyed a certain “softness” with its curved forms and opulent finishes.

It’s hard to imagine a more rich and colorful time in history. On one hand you have a larger-than-life figure whose name has become synonymous with military might and strategy. On the other, you have a man who was brought to his knees by the woman he adored. This is an epic of almost Shakespearean proportions.

Century

classifies Consulate as Neoclassical, incorporating elements of Empire, Charles X, Louis XVI, Directoire and Biedermeier design.

If the history behind Consulate is a tapestry of power and passion, so too are the collection’s textures and colors. Crafted mostly in walnut, this furniture features intricate veneering, carved details, and a mix of such contrasting materials as marble, cast stone, iron and leather. And the finishes—from shimmering gold to vibrant crimson— speak volumes about the glories of the crown. Emperor – The collection’s primary finish, Emperor is a rich, clear, burnished chestnut glowing with gold undertones. Empress – This pale golden-brown finish is achieved through Century’s exclusive technique for lightening the color of walnut veneers. Coronation Black – This soft ebony matte paint is rubbed away in areas to expose hints of wood; an “old world” gold leaf highlights mouldings and carvings. Directoire Gold – An elegant textured gold leaf, this finish has a worn, layered surface. Regency Gold – A hand-applied gold leaf, complete with underlying red tones.

Celadon – This pale green textured paint, speckled with undertones of ivory, features burnished edges and hints of gold leaf. Aged Celadon – Similar to Celadon yet reflects an aged and weathered look without gold highlights. Available on select pieces.

Several

tables and chests feature exquisite marble tops imported from Italy. Perhaps most stunning is Fossile Nero, a smoky charcoal-colored stone quarried from the ancient hills of Morocco. It’s enhanced with the fossils of 600-million-year-old mollusks that were upthrust in a cataclysmic explosion from the sea’s floor.

But make no mistake: this furniture is as relevant today as it was in the time of Napoleon and Josephine. It creates a sense of order and harmony, which is very reassuring in a chaotic world. It’s quite chameleon-like. It goes with anything, whether it’s a nineteenth century room or a very modern one. Yet the designs in this collection are not shy or retiring in any way. They are powerful, passionate “statement pieces.” And power and passion never go out of vogue…for those who make them a priority.

Opposite 591-205 Tuileries Dresser After their marriage and coronation as Emperor and Empress, Napoleon and Josephine established their home in the Tuileries. A dresser such as this might have held Josephine’s stockings or Napoleon’s sashes. Stylized for today’s living, this chest features four dual concave drawers, framed by Empire shaped columns that are trimmed in black and gold. With lions head pulls, this chest is worthy of your own palace. W 751⁄2 D 243⁄4 H361⁄4 Available in 591 finish only.

Opposite 597-232 Elba Mirror After his fall from power, Napoleon was banished to the island of Elba, where he was still called Emperor and kept a certain estate of well appointed rooms due to the kindness of Tsar Alexander I. In those rooms, Napoleon surrounded himself with beautiful mirrors, perhaps to reflect on his empire. This beautifully decorated mirror will reflect your own dynasty. Above left 591-226 Ìngre Night Stand The French painter, Ìngre, was first and foremost a draftsman of the highest order. His paintings, drawings and etchings clearly express the sociology and modernity of his time. With its simple lines and black accents, this night stand might have been at home in Ìngre’s studio. This cabinet is a dynamic counterpoint to an elaborate bed, and will provide artistic style in your bedroom. W 343⁄4 D 193⁄4 H 32 Available in 591 finish only. Opposite 592-201 Consul Master Chest A fresh take on a French classic, this master chest is commanding in its clean break front and reeded pilasters and cornice, which take their cue from the reeded cabinets in Napoleon’s study at Malmaison. The four drawers feature lions head pulls and the doors open to reveal one adjustable wooden shelf. This fresh classic sits on proud paw feet and will crown your bedroom with a royal presence. W 64 D 21 H 45 Available in 591 & 592 finishes. 11-649 Chaise Please refer to Century Upholstery price list. 597-235 Lyre Mirror The Viennese cabinetmakers carried the Biedermeier style to its ultimate forms, using simple Greek shapes. Exuberant, yet restrained in material, the style was personified by the “C”-scrolls reflected in this arched mirror with black and gold painted decoration. Over a dresser, it will reflect your brilliant outlook. Over a console in a foyer, it announces your sublime good taste. W 381⁄2 D 3 H 55 Available in 597 finish only. 591-212 Majesté Armoire Use it to hold your 35-inch television or your finest vêtements (clothing). Quite architectural in its effect, this powerful design culminates in a rare modified bonnet crown. Two Grecian capitals flank its wrap-around doors; a third appears to bisect them. Prominent lions head ring pulls on the doors and wing-like hardware on the six drawers convey a striking regality. Egg and dart moulding flows around the base. Interior features three adjustable wooden shelves, electrical outlet with surge protector, cable-ready and telephone jack. W 58 D 281⁄4 H 881⁄2 Available in 591 , 592 & 597 finishes.

597-555 Regency Bench Thomas Hope lived abroad during Napoleon’s consulate and brought back to England the Empire style, borrowing from Greek and Roman forms. The “X” stool is prominently shown in Hope’s book titled Household Furniture and Decoration, written in 1807. The shape became a classic in England as well as America and France. This versatile bench will be charming at the foot of a bed, or by a fireplace in a regal living room. W 241⁄2 D 17 H 211⁄2 Available in 597 finish only. 3681 Chairs (background) Please refer to Century Chair price list.

HOW TO CARE FOR THE CONSULATE COLLECTION CARE OF FINE FINISHES

CARE OF DECORATIVE HARDWARE

Fine Century finishes are resistant to minor everyday hazards; however, some precautions are necessary to maintain the beauty of your wood furniture: • The signature finishes require regular dusting with a soft clean cloth, slightly moistened with water. Dry completely with another clean cloth, always rubbing with the grain. • Every two to four months, apply a furniture polish made by a reputable manufacturer. Follow package directions. • Avoid contact with cigarettes, hot dishes, harsh solvents, such as nail polish, alcohol, and moisture. • Use pads beneath accessories and when writing or eating. • Remove spills and smudges immediately. • Do not leave pliable plastic or rubber materials on a wood surface; they can damage the finish. • Do not place furniture near heat outlets, windows, or in direct sunlight.

The decorative hardware on this furniture has been protected with a clear lacquer coat. Use of harsh detergents or brass polish in an attempt to obtain high luster will result in the removal of the protective lacquer and will damage the finish of the hardware. Do not use harsh detergents or brass polish. • Use a soft, damp cloth to remove dust. • Do not use harsh detergents or brass polish.

CENTURY FURNITURE

The Consulate Collection will maintain its beauty if treated with reasonable care. These simple procedures will keep Century’s Consulate Collection looking its best, year after year.
