Our Silhouettes Upholstery is made to order allowing you to design one of a kind pieces from a wide range of forms from chairs to chaises, sofas to sectionals with options including backs, arms and cushions, with skirted or exposed leg bases. Most are Made to Measure from 28 to 120 inches in width and in a choice of two heights and depths.

The long and short of skirts. The style of skirt, its length, or even the decision to forego a skirt altogether, are all choices that help establish a room’s personality, and reflect that of the people who spend time there. Hickory Chair tailors skirts to suit every style.
Choosing a skirt style requires thoughtful attention, as dramatized here in these two incarnations of the 7621-21 Boudoir Chair. The shirred ruffle version is pretty and feminine, while the kick-pleated Boudoir Chair at right has an air of sophisticated modernism.

Classically elegant at left with its standard exposed legs finished in Medium Mahogany, the 1820-02 Chippendale Chair displays an entirely different manner of charm dressed in a short box-pleated skirt, yet still showing a little leg. The special-construction version is embroidered with the Graceful monogram, and the legs are shown off in a Kohl finish.

Wood Finish Options Stained and painted wood finishes are created with several layers of coatings designed to accentuate the natural characteristics and beauty of the wood while achieving a particular look and palette. Due to the unique nature of each species and piece of wood, color and grain pattern variations should be expected which enhance and accentuate the individual qualities of each item. Every piece of wood will speak its own individual language.
Similarly, our finishes and aging techniques are hand applied by skilled artisans utilizing special tools and techniques to replicate authentic distressing and character markings as found on well preserved antique heirlooms. Cerused Finish Options The Cerused finish technique creates a washed appearance that allows the natural beauty of the wood to show. As Wood Species have unique grain patterns and absorb finishes differently, a wide variation in finish color and inconsistency in the amount of visible whitish hang up should be expected. The Cerused finishes are species specific as the resulting color is highly dependant on the natural color of the wood and is unique to each species. It is not available on items constructed of maple or cherry. Cerused finishes have a low to medium sheen level and light distressing. These finish colors are not interchangeable between species (i.e. you cannot order Cerused Mahogany on a piece constructed of Ash).

Paint Techniques Hickory Chair offers four paint techniques in eight colors that provide different levels of distressing to painted pieces: Weathered, Rustic, Vintage and Heirloom. The Heirloom technique has extra heavy distressing that includes gouging, chiseling, splits, very worn edges, and heavy burnishing completed with a hand-rubbed finish coat and medium sheen. Our multi-layered paint finishes require great skill and attention in perfecting their application. If you can see it in your imagination, Hickory Chair finish artisans will interpret your vision in our workroom.
Antiqued paint finishes are stunningly eye-catching, as proven here in these two examples of the Circa 1765 Door Chest. Design by subtraction. A more modern or less formal look can be achieved from certain Hickory Chair items merely by requesting the removal of architectural details. One very dramatic example is the Vauxhall Display Cabinet pictured on these pages. It’s easy to see how a little de-construction, along with hardware and finish alterations, created a constructive change in at least one customer’s perception.
In response to a customer’s request for a more modern and less formal version of the Vauxhall Display Cabinet, our craftsmen created the personalized version at right by omitting the crown pediment, combining painted finishes, and changing hardware. The outside is painted in Antique Ivory, while the interior is Weathered Venetian Blue. In addition, the standard bail pulls and key pulls were replaced with Neoclassic brass pieces from Thomas O’Brien’s Academy Armoire. The standard version at left is shown in our Oxford finish.
