In order to faithfully replicate the look of an heirloom, Palos Verdes designs are heavily hand-distressed in the initial part of the finishing process. Artisans then burnish the edges to simulate use over time, apply padding stains to create highlights and shadows, and then hand wax the surface to achieve a soft satin luster. The result is a new piece of furniture with the hand and character of a fine antique.

THE LOST WAX CASTING PROCESS The art of casting precious metals with intricate carvings has been practiced in the jewelry trade for thousands of years. When cabinet makers first began to utilize brass for decorative hardware, these proven techniques were applied to furniture. For complex and intricate designs, the “ lost wax casting” process is the only way to achieve the required level of detail. It allows any design that can be hand carved into wax to be faithfully translated into metal. The process begins with the creation of an original wax model by a master carver. From the original, a rubber mold is made. By pouring hot wax into the rubber mold and allowing it to cool, multiple wax castings are produced.

These replicas of the original wax casting are then covered with several coats of ceramic slurry, creating a hard shell. The ceramic-covered molds are placed into a kiln and slowly heated until all of the wax from the interior has melted away, leaving a perfectly formed shell – thus the name “ lost wax casting.”

Hot molten brass is then poured into a small opening in the ceramic shell and allowed to cool. Once cooled, the ceramic shell is broken open, leaving a perfectly cast piece of solid brass hardware. Artisans then clean and detail the finished brass piece, polishing it by hand. This technique is both time-consuming and labor intensive, but remains the most effective method of creating hardware with the detail and finesse of fine jewelry.
