Pinching Big Pots

3D This workshop will focus on what I feel is an often forgotten/neglected building technique, pinching. I will show how to use the technique to control the clay, and to move the clay up rather than out. Each participant will begiven a ball of clay and instructed on how to make a mug using the pinch pot technique. I will end with showing how pinching can be combined with coiling to build large pieces. MATERIALS TO BRING: Camera or Phone

Nature Notebooks

Drawing Take your students outside with a sketchbook and amazing things can happen. Students excitedly point out spiders or flowers or sit and draw one small plant for ages. Advocacy Come hear how Denver East High plans and runs their annual Artswalk. This event is a collaboration with the fine arts department, school, and community to “take over” the local area around the school for one night for a celebration of the arts that typically sees about 500 people in attendance. Paper Sculptures

3D In this workshop participants will discover a new way to include paper folding in their curriculum. Through research, exploration and experimentation each participant will create their own folded paper sculpture. Too often we discount origami, but it is used in all kinds of works. Including but not limited to architecture, tool development and the fashion industry. We will discover together some inspiring images and design our own small scale 3D paper sculpture. The instruction will cover some basic folds to try together, a short presentation of information with handouts containing more interesting folds to try and links for inspiration.This workshop’s content can be scaffolded for any level of learning and most ability levels. No more “Projects’’ in art class? Creating artwork with Inquiry and Personal Meaning

Although we will spotlight AP, this workshop is open to anyone who wants to help students develop their own ideas for artwork, and have fun while doing it!! If you are interested in transitioning to a TAB based format, this could be a way to introduce your students to the premise. AP Studio Art changed to AP Art and Design. The new focus is on the development of inquiry allowing time to research ideas, concepts, media, processes, practice and other important play! Using questioning techniques, we will unlock what drives you to create, what your interests are, what materials you want to use, and get you started on a line of inquiry to create your own artwork. Using art supplies we will get started on actual pieces that you will continue to work on with your students in class.

Inkspired Art

Mixed Media Using newspaper, ink, glue and mixed media participants will create beautifully inkspired artworks. Artists interact visually, not literally with text allowing them to develop authentic abstract or original representational illustrations. Moreover, this is an inexpensive and easy studio lesson to tier into multi-levels. The contextual elements are a collaged platform to create original compositions. This is a project where student artists work in tandem with their editorial or literary resource allowing the learner to develop authentic non-objective or depictive illustrations. Arts-based Research in Action

Graduates of the University of Northern Colorado MA in Art and Design program present their arts-based and action research findings. Topics include: Customer service in the classroom. 5 big themes of customer service that mimics classroom management; Research workbooks are a valuable tool for authentically assessing students’ artistic growth; and Experiences of viewing art digitally versus in real life in the postdigital age. The results of which are an emergent way of informing practice that are applicable to a variety of art educational settings as well as for personal renewal. Tempera Resist-Additive & Subtractive Painting

Painting Artists can break through that hesitation to start with this fun multi media painting technique. Through the use of many layers of tempera paint (yes that paint many feel is horrible) and India ink artists will create a slightly unpredictable stained glass like painting. Encaustic With Crayon

2D Get ready to turn one of the oldest artmaking processes into something new! Turn a nostalgic but inflexible medium into something new and exciting while also being incredibly forgiving and fun! Students at the middle and high school levels can experiment and explore possibilities with layers of color and texture. Ink and PaintingTechniques, The Processes of Andy Warhol and Amy Ringholtz

This workshop is open to anyone who wants to learn some ideas using Ink! We will start with powerpoints of the artist’s work and processes, and talk about ideas for your classroom. All information shared will be on Google Classroom for you to use later. We will make an artwork using ink with watercolor, or ink with acrylic paint - your choice! I will have resource images that you can work from, but if you have an image that you want to use (8x10) bring it with you! You can use a baby nasal aspirator as a drawing tool!! Dot Painting and the DOODLE

This workshop explores the origins of traditional dot painting methods by Indigenous Aborigines of Australia as well as works created by Post Modern artist Vance Kirkland. Merging these influences will culminate in a beautiful finished painting that will explore color, variety, depth, movement, and rhythm in design (to name a few). Participants will also examine the concept of “automatic drawing” and the power of the “doodle” as illustrated by Sigmar Polke and other doodle theorists. This will offer the building block for the overall composition. Though this lesson was designed for high school students, it is easily adaptable to all grade levels. Participants will leave with not only a beautiful and colorful dot painting, but surely be inspired by how many ways the “doodle” can impact future lessons and works.

Felted Soap

3D Felted Soap is just that! Using soap and water to cover the soap with vibrant colors using a wet felting technique. This is a fantastic lesson for upper elementary but can be super fun for Middle school level as well. You will be shocked with how fun and easy it is!! In the classroom, students can explore color families/combinations and composition. Students can also learn about sustainability and how to cut down on plastic use (bottled soaps, etc). Tempera Resist-Additive & Subtractive Painting

Painting Artists can break through that hesitation to start with this fun multi media painting technique. Through the use of many layers of tempera paint (yes that paint many feel is horrible) and India ink artists will create a slightly unpredictable stained glass like painting. Secrets to Dye For!

In this one hour class, you will gain an introduction to natural dyes on fiber. Samples from my dye garden, an active dye bath, and other artifacts will be provided. This is meant to be a taste of what is possible in the world of color foraging.
