MICROCOSMOS
experimental water-based museum complex Location: Haskoy, Istanbul / Turkey Exhibited in: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki & ITU 2012 Best Graduation Projects Exhibition, Thessaloniki / Greece Published in: “Archiprix2011” Publisher: Yem
creating water transfers in Istanbul historical peninsula
P
roduction, healing, exposition, involving the public in the process and connecting the coastlines - these are the aims of the experimental museum ‘Microcosmos’. Microcosmos is designed to challenge the stereotypical rules of museums, so that they may keep their importance and stay alive as time goes by. Otherwise, museums are sentenced to be forgotten. Golden Horn in Istanbul is experiencing a problem with water pollution. Over time, this ‘production museum’ must not only survive in spite of ecological problems, but also play a role as a healer of the environment. To deal with this issue, bio-mass modules will be built and connected to the drains in order to clean the water. This cleansing is imagined as a futuristic scenario that follows the development of the museum, from the year 2012 to the year 2092.
B
y 2092, Golden Horn will have an underwater production city and purifying machine with channels and tubes. A long term planning is necessary to structure the museum during this timeframe. With the cleaning of the water, Golden Horn is designed to be an area of underwater canals and power stations. An ecological utopia is imagined with underwater tube and subway crossings, bio-mass power stations producing energy from organic waste from the sewers, and underwater factories whose CO2 emissions are suppressed with the water pressure. Units for cleaning and waterlife protection are gradually transformed into museum spaces as the water is purified closer to 2092. As a symbolic gesture, an underwater museum is founded to show that the water has been cleansed.
Art and craft are united on the remodelled historical and new bridge

fter Galata Bridge was burnt down, modules of the bridge have been relocated on Golden Horn. Two substantial modules from the old bridge still exist in Ballat. With the new bridge connection from Haskoy, the two coasts of Halic are reunited, and consequently the bridge becomes a ‘pedestrian bridge museum’. The new bridge is designed considering the condition and criteria of the old bridge.Furthermore, the museum can also be used as an event space for Istanbul Design and Fashion week.

BUBBLE UP
futuristic high-rise building study Location: Harem, Istanbul/ Turkey Exhibited & Published in: Mimed 2009 competetion Finalist projects 4th year category Yearbooklet Mimed2009, publisher: TMMOB
B
ubble up is designed for Istanbul, in which there will be too many skyscrapers. The cultural complex provides an improved system of transportation which would reduce traffic congestion in the area, a major problem for the city. This eco-friendly, utopian building is also designed for organising and hosting a periodical international expo and trade centre. Bubble up is designed to be a water and wind based building with an international harbour, near to the Istanbul Marmara sea. The existing public ferry system is integrated with the harbour to give an alternative to land transportation, and the building is allowed to be open to traffic from both Turkey and other countries. Ideally served by these transportation solutions, the harbour is designed to be transformed into a multipurpose area for concerts and conferences. It is possible to reach the building with different methods of transport. To facilitate this, there are different entrance zones and more than one ‘ground level’ floor, at different heights which relate to the site and to the sea.
Bubble up is a futuristic, eco friendly skyscraper. To achieve this, the building is designed with bubbles* and wind dishes*, and the floor plans are designed to create a vertical canyon effect and generate a more powerful wind. The height of the building also reaches the faster prevailing winds at altitude. With all of these factors put together, Bubble Up functions as a wind-energy basel building. Pneumatic bubbles for the temporary expo spaces blow up if there is enough wind force, and if not, blow up motors are put in use. Additional wind dishes harness the wind power and collect rainwater.
ECO FABRIC
eco-friendly village and urban design Location: Iznik, Bursa / Turkey Exhibited & Published in: Mimed 2010 competetion Finalist projects 4th year category Yearbooklet Mimed2010, publisher: TMMOB
Eco-fabric is located in Bursa, between an antique theatre,
olive fields, and Iznik Lake. The area close to the olive fields is under the threat of pollution. This architecture and urban design project is designed to save the olive fields, in order for them to return to begin reproducing. This site is planned as a modern village combing glass houses, an eco-bazaar, eco-houses, farms and sports areas. Transportation within the village is provided by the rail system. Bazaar units and passengers are transported by rail system. Crops and produce coming from the glass houses, fields and nearby villages are exhibited and sold in rented bazaar units.
A
ll of the units are designed to be formed of removable parts made from eco-friendly materials. There will be ecohouses and playgrounds built for visitors, for them to experience the ecological life within. These structures will be built with the same structural and material concerns as the other units. The network structure is designed with a lightweightsteel self supporting system.

LINEAR SQUARE

H
ow to make a working connection between the crowded offices of Fulya, and the silent residential area of the upper level of the street?
I
n this competition proposal, the existing stepped street connecting the commercial area with the residential area is thought of as a public square arranged along a line, like an open common space. It lets people pass and others pause at the same time. This linear square functions as a street for meeting, pausing and spending time. For this, the ‘smart stepped’ furniture work as sitting/laying/playing/hobby units. They function like typical steps when not in use, but can be transformed easily by pulling up and plugging into the neighbouring walls.

T
his project is located in Alcati (also known as Alatsata or Agrilia from Greek), an Aegean town on the Western coast of Izmir Province in Turkey, which has been famous for its architecture vineyards and windmills for over 150 years. Stone houses are very typical for the local architecture of Alacati. Due to its location on a protected site within a UNESCO heritage area, this villa project is designed combining both traditional and modern criterion and techniques. The materials and design decisions are made according to earthquake regulations and summer climate conditions.
