Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles

Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles

“

We have a global vision: When our students graduate, they are equipped to be leaders in the multibillion-dollar international apparel and textiles industry. Job ready, day one. ~ Dr. Joan Ellis AMDT Department Chair

The Life of the Industry The essence of the apparel industry may appear to be a beautifully woven scarf or flowing couture gown, but behind every stitch and every fiber is a trained workforce, persistent innovation, and cutting-edge research. Through the Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles (AMDT) program at Washington State University, we step beyond fashion to develop holistically-educated professionals and market-responsive ideas that enhance the apparel and textiles industry locally and globally. Our tested method of teaching across the supply chain, combined with the prominence of the outdoor apparel market in the Pacific Northwest, strongly positions AMDT to positively change the industry. A new level of excellence is only possible, however, through new public and private investment, dynamic industry alliances, and generous philanthropic support. By reshaping the educational environment with purposeful internship and study abroad opportunities, targeted scholarship funds, and a broader range of worldclass instruction, we can work together to inspire excellence.

Shaping the student

You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” ~Oscar Wilde

The apparel and textiles industry in Washington State generates $16.4 billion dollars in revenue to the state and employs more than fifty thousand people—and it’s growing. To adequately respond to the expanding local and even global demand, experts are needed in consumer behavior, trend forecasting, product development and buying, financial planning, and global supply chain management. AMDT’s leading program integrates the design, development, and merchandising of apparel and textile products with an understanding of the people who use those products. Participation in national internships, study abroad, student club activities, industry seminars, and fashion shows builds an in-depth and nuanced working knowledge of all aspects of the industry. As a result, AMDT graduates secure high-quality careers in corporate

environments.

Ways to Inspire

AMDT is responsible for meeting the educational needs of more than 270 students. To fulfill this commitment, continue to increase enrollment, as well as foster the collaboration and research necessary to advance the program further, AMDT must consolidate, enhance, and update its facilities; provide student scholarships; and hire additional faculty. Investment partners are needed to realize this vision.
