Badenoch Great Place Project

Welcome to the Badenoch Festival 2019 On behalf of the Badenoch Great Place Project, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the first Badenoch Festival in the Cairngorms National Park, Badenoch’s regional festival celebrating the area’s special past and living culture. With the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and building on the success of the Kingussie Heritage Festival, our festival is developed with local people showcasing the very best that local heritage has to offer in Dalwhinnie, Kincraig, Kingussie, Laggan and Newtonmore. An exciting programme, of over 60 events, celebrates Badenoch’s unique connections to landscape, highland community and the deep roots of storytelling in the Cairngorms National Park. In these pages you will find traditional music, living history, shinty, walks and cycling, talks and storytelling for you to experience. The majority of the events are delivered by the passion of local people and through lots of hard work by members of Badenoch Heritage, the Badenoch Festival Working Group and our dedicated Badenoch Ambassador volunteers.

I would like to express warm thanks to all our partner organisations in helping to organise this year’s festival, including the Cairngorms National Park Authority, The Highland Council, High Life Highland, Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Transport Scotland, Badenoch Heritage and also the team at Voluntary Action in Badenoch and Strathspey, in particular the Badenoch Great Place Project Officer, Dr Oliver O’Grady. Grant aid for the festival has come from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players, with additional funding from Cairngorms National Park Authority, Transport Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and The Highland Council. Our volunteers, community groups, charities, museums and local attractions have all helped us share Badenoch’s highland culture and authentic story with you. Enjoy.

Karen Derrick, Chief Officer VABS

Badenoch Badenoch is first recorded as a place name from the 13th century and derives from the Gaelic Bàideanach, meaning the drowned land – a reference to the seasonal flooding of the Spey River and the extensive upland flood plain of the Insh Marshes. Today Badenoch is part of the Cairngorms National Park.

Taking part in an outdoor event? It is recommended to wear suitably sturdy footwear, warm and waterproof clothing for your own comfort and safety. Follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code when visiting the Cairngorms National Park www.outdooraccess-scotland.scot

Participation in all events is deemed to be at your own risk. All event organisers are required to hold public liability insurance during the festival and to carry out risk assessments in advance of events taking place.
