Music in the Park

Help from the heavens A helicopter pilot who rushed to the aid of a car accident victim on a remote cattle station in North Queensland has been crowned the 2020 Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) Local Hero Award winner for the Cairns region. James Telford was working on Van Rook Station when alerted to a car accident elsewhere on the property, which is located on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria. One of the first on scene, James realised that the sole passenger needed urgent medical attention after her car blew a tire and crashed into a tree.

“When I first saw the car, I thought, ‘this is really bad,’” said Mr Telford. “I was panicking big time. The front of the car was completely caved in, and the dash and everything was pushed right up on her, and the steering wheel had a big bend in it which must’ve been from her head, and the windscreen was smashed out. “She was shaking and her eyes were rolling in the back of her head. I knew we couldn’t stay there, we had to get something happening before her adrenaline stopped.” Knowing that a neighbouring station contained an airstrip

on which the RFDS could land, James loaded the semi-conscious victim into his helicopter and flew her to Dorunda Station.

“What James did highlights the resourcefulness and resilience of the country folk,” she said.

“When I put her in and strapped her arms in the seat, I said ‘Whatever you do, don’t move.’ I was flying pretty low and ready to land if something did go wrong.”

“They just step up to the plate, use their smarts, get it done, and walk over hot coals to save somebody else. The situation could’ve been dire and the outcome could’ve been much worse.”

James, along with fellow staff from the Gulf Coast Agricultural Company, were able to further assist the patient until the RFDS crew could land and transport her back to Cairns. RFDS nurse Susan Markwell said Mr Telford’s actions had enabled the patient to make a full recovery.

James is among nine Local Hero Award winners – each from one of the RFDS’s nine base locations in Queensland. Ravenshoe couple Jean and Mervyn Shaw were also recognised for their support of the Service with the Hugh McKay Award.

Queenslanders are now encouraged to vote for which of the nine they would like to win the overall Queensland Local Hero Award, who would win a $7,500 grant to give back to their community. The annual Local Hero Awards, proudly supported by Ergon Energy Retail, Seven News Queensland and Queensland Country Life, recognise Queenslanders who have donated their time and energy to keep the Flying Doctor in the air and assisting the communities which need it the most. The Cairns Men’s Shed: A Taj Mahal of man-caves

Future secure TANYA MURPHY THE Cairns Men’s Shed is man-heaven. It’s the Taj Mahal of man-caves. It’s got everything a man could wish for – workshops fully equipped with engineering, woodworking and electrical tools; vegetable gardens, an air conditioned library, computer room and lunchroom, and of course meeting and function space. But until recently the Men’s Shed was only leasing the space underneath and behind the former Scout Hall in Mooroobool, leaving its permanence in doubt. So it was with great excitement that on Tuesday, November 17, the Men’s Shed officially celebrated securing its ‘forever home’ thanks to a $1 million grant from the Federal Government. The grant has enabled them to purchase the entire property from the Scouts, expand the facility to the upstairs hall, and carry out $250,000 worth of renovations. Men’s Shed president Bob Lavington said with 130 members it was one of the best Men’s Sheds in Australia and thanked everyone who contributed to make it great. Men’s Shed members volunteered time to renovating, painting, gardening and more while a number of local businesses contributed including Fair Dinkum Sheds, Dave Chapman electrician, Jason Piggott Air Conditioning, Masterlifts and Knight Frank Real Estate who donated the valuation for free. Cairns Mayor Bob Manning congratulated the Men’s Shed for the accomplishment. “The Cairns Men’s Shed is a

great group with great camaraderie. It’s a wonderful place to gather, do something and meet other people. Keep up the good work,” said Mayor Manning. Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch congratulated the Men’s Shed on being the first in Australia to own their own building, and made special mention of Beth Lavington for working on the grant application and acquittal. “This is a wonderful club, thanks to the many hands that go into making it what it is. I may have to get myself a membership sometime soon,” said Mr Entsch. Cairns Men’s Shed is the oldest and largest in Cairns, established in 2008 as a way to help deal with the loneliness, depression and isolation of ageing men, although all men aged over 18 are welcome. Since then, Men’s Sheds have also sprung up in neighbouring suburbs including Trinity Beach, Edmonton, Holloway’s Beach, Kuranda and Cooktown. The Shed provides a meeting place to bring men together to find companionship, share life experiences, and pursue creative blokey hobbies.

Cairns Men’s Shed members Ernie Rowe and Mike Wraith used shed facilities to help build these toys, which will be donated to the Cazaly’s Christmas Toy drive for children in need.

A Myna Men’s Trap

A trap invented and built at Cairns Men’s Shed has removed tens of thousands of invasive Myna Birds from the Cairns environment in the past few years. Cairns Men’s Shed member Rodney Moon, a former fisherman, applied his fishing know-how to come up with a design which worked, and since then, the men have built and sold more than 1700 traps.

At the shed, men grow vegetables, fix engines, refurbish furniture and antiques, and build useful things which they either sell to raise funds for the next project, or donate to the community. Cynthia Melvin, wife of one of the members, said the Men’s Shed was a godsend for women, too. “It gets the men out of the house and gives them something to do,” she said.

“People told me to give up because they had tried to trap Myna birds in the past and it never worked very well,” said Mr Moon. “But these traps work really well – one guy has caught 800 birds in his. Cairn’s Men’s Shed members Brad Bellamy and Rodney Moon with part of a myna bird trap.

“I don’t get any Myna birds at my place anymore – I caught them all over the last two years. Now I get a lot more native birds which is lovely.” A trap costs $75 and funds go towards the Men’s Shed various community projects.

Indigenous Designer on course for Fashion Capital of the World FR0M PAGE 1 NICOLE GIBSON

Make up and Photo credit: Cass Ellmer Makeup Artist

FIRST Nation’s fashion is poised to hit the world stage with the first Aboriginal Australian designer ever invited to debut at Milan Fashion Week next year. The label MURRII QUU COUTURE is set to grace the same catwalks as fashion icons Versace, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana when local Indigenous designer Cheryl Creed’s creations feature in the Emerging Talent category at Milan Fashion Week in March 2021. While there are many fashion weeks around the globe, Milan is iconic and considered one of the world’s big Four Fashion Weeks alongside New York, Paris and London. The Woree based designer, who is one of just 10 designers from across the globe to be selected, said the invitation was a dream come true. “I was in an online meeting when I got the email and I had to read it five times and I couldn’t

believe it,” Cheryl said. “Milan is the fashion capital of the world. “This is a really big deal for someone coming from a small Indigenous community to now be presenting on a Milan runway.” Cheryl fell into the field in 2017 after being asked if she would like to become a designer during a modelling assignment. With a background as a professional artist, she jumped at the chance and MURRII QUU COUTURE was born. The semi sustainable label takes existing garments and refashions them into high-end evening gowns. While the invitation is a dream come true for Cheryl, it does not come without it’s challenges. Cheryl needs to raise funds of around $20,000 to cover the costs associated with the opportunity including registration, creating and sewing a bespoke col-

lection for the event and freight. “The funds will cover sourcing my sustainable materials, design costs, registration and shipping fees,” she said. “If the borders open by then I would love to go over there as well.” In order to raise the funds her supporters have established an exciting fundraising program on her behalf. It includes a Go Fund Me page and black-tie gala auction of some of Cheryl’s past creations including gowns that have graced the walkways of Mercedes Fashion Week in Brisbane and Melbourne Fashion Week. Australian Indigenous fashion designers are under-represented in the fashion world both nationally and internationally. Local designer and artist Grace Lillian Lee is the director of not-for-profit organisation First Nations Fashion & Design which was founded to help support the

growth of Indigenous fashion. Grace said awareness of Indigenous designers was growing nationally and Cheryl’s achievement was an important step for raising this globally. “I think we all dreamed of going to Milan so how fantastic that someone’s actually doing it,”she said. “For it to be seen globally and especially at Milan - we know Milan is the fashion capital of the world, especially during the pandemic, I think it’s a pretty bold statement. “It’s a huge inspiration for the next generation.” To support Cheryl, follow MURRII QUU COUTURE’s Facebook and Instagram pages or to make a donation visit: au.gofundme.com/f/help-murrique-couture-get-to-milan-fashion-week.

NO CHANGE TO GOLD CARD

The Federal Government is rejecting recommended changes to the Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card, providing veterans and their families in with clarity and assurance for the future of their benefits. Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Enstch said the proposed changes to the Gold Card, recommended in the Productivity Commission report, A Better Way to Support Veterans, did not fully support the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families,. He said veteran community can rest assured the government was committed to their health and wellbeing. “The government is rejecting these recommendations and will not be implementing them. “Eligibility for the Veteran Gold Card will not change. The Productivity Commission recommended restricting future Gold Card eligibility to veterans with a severe service-related impairment, effectively meaning no new grants of Gold Card for veterans’ dependants as well as a number of other veteran cohorts who are currently entitled.

A solution to plastics in our environment NICOLE GIBSON A Far North Queensland uncle and his nephew are on the cusp of revolutionising how farms dispose of their plastic waste with their world first thermoplastic melting technology.

“Some farmers are paying $12,000 to $15,000 a month to get the stuff taken off their farms so the cost to farmers is astronomical and if we can find a pathway for them to save money and we can also add that waste to a value-added product then everyone’s a winner.”

Recycling innovator Michael Ritchie of Ritchie’s Plastic in Silkwood and nephew, molecular scientist, Dr William Ritchie have invented a recycling plant which quickly and cost-effectively repurposes agricultural thermoplastics, saving them from landfill.

The machine, called the R-tec Melter, instantly melts down almost any form agricultural plastic waste in its post-consumer state, without the need for pre-processing.

Michael Ritchie said the invention will translate into enormous cost benefits to farmers as it won’t cost them anything, other than the cost of their transport, to dispose of their thermoplastics.

The melted product will then be repurposed to make a range of recyclable products such as car bump stops, fence plinths, house stumps, pavers and more.

“Banana bunch covers are an example,” Mr Ritchie said. “It doesn’t cost them anything if they bring their banana bunch covers into the factory and they’re reasonably clean we can accept them.

This includes banana bunch covers, bags, wrap, netting, pot plants and more.

The duo say the reduced processing and melting costs will also translate into costs savings on these products for consumers. Principle inventor Dr William Ritchie anticipates the company will be able to reduce the cost

of equivalent recycled products made from their melt by up to 50 percent. “That’s probably the key point around all of this, it’s cost competitive,” Dr Ritchie said. “The resulting cost benefit will be passed onto the consumer at the product purchasing point.”

for this machine is that it accepts a bale and all you would need to do is load the bale into the machine and it would melt the entire bale,” Dr Ritchie said. “It literally is going straight in and it melts it down, there’s not a lot else that happens.”

While the machine will be lightweight enough to be portable, it will also be large enough to process bulky feedstocks such as banana bunch cover bales.

Dr Ritchie said due to the limitations on the export of post-consumer waste, one of the most exciting aspects of this machine was that it effectively eliminated the need for it to go to landfill.

“One of the design options

“Landfills are currently un-

der a lot of pressure because there’s not a recycling and structural solution in place that is of scale and cost competitive,” he said. While the company has embarked on an engineering pathway, funding sources were still needed to aid the cost of commercialisation. To date a small-scale prototype has been completed with a large production version pending investment.

She has written a book about her journey, which she is selling to raise money for women and children dealing with domestic violence and disadvantage in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Ms Gah will speak about her experiences and launch her book, “Survive and Thrive: My courageous journey out of domestic violence,” this Sunday, November 22 at a luncheon hosted by the Zonta Club of Cairns at the Pullman International from 1 to 3pm. After leaving the abusive marriage, Ms Gah has now been in a happy marriage for more than 20 years and said her own experience in surviving domestic violence made her particularly passionate about helping others going through the same experience. “When I tell women that I went through the same thing, they really open up and they don’t feel like they need to be ashamed or hide it anymore,” she said. “What I’ve discovered over my years of experience is that domestic violence can happen anywhere in all countries, classes and sections of society and it’s important to support women to not only survive that situation and get themselves to safety, but to thrive afterwards, as I Cairns Local Lydia Gah has written a book about her journey out of domestic violence, to raise money for women and have.”

Property charges Brinsmead and Edmonton: Two 17-year-old girls have been charged after they were located yesterday by officers from the Property Crime Squad in Edmonton. It will be alleged the pair were involved in the theft of a Lexus station wagon from a Windsor Close home at Brinsmead on November 15. The stolen car was then allegedly involved in two fuel driveoff offences at Edmonton and White Rock. The car was located in Manunda the following day with front end damage. One 17-year-old girl was charged with unlicenced driving, burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and three counts of stealing. The other teenager was charged with burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and two counts of stealing. Both are scheduled to appear before the Cairns Children’s Court this month. Weapons and drug charges, Westcourt: A 42-year-old Sarina man will face four charges after detectives arrested him at a Rose Street residence late yesterday afternoon. No effort will be wasted Queensland Government Waste Disposal Levy,” said Cr Millwood.

“We have significant volumes of green waste, white goods, furniture and tyres being discarded at the side of the road, much of which could easily be recycled. In addition to the appointment of a Community Education Officer, Cassowary Coast Council have also commenced rolling out roadside signage and covert surveillance cameras with a capability of recording vehicle registrations and identifying possible illegal disposal allowing Council to work with alleged offenders to remove rubbish and or, fine offenders for their actions.

PETER MCCULLAGH ILLEGAL dumping is an issue for many regional Councils. Since the introduction of state-wide waste disposal levies in 2019, residents and business owners have been battling with the increased costs associated with the disposal of many recyclable items.

In the Cassowary Coast, illegal dumping has become such a problem, the Council has recently employed a fulltime Community Education Officer. Cassowary Coast Division 2 Councillor Teresa Millwood is confident the new Education Officer along with other significant steps will bring about a reduction in

waste heading to landfill and also the instances of illegal dumping. “The expectation is that the new Community Education officer will implement community programs that will lead to the reduction of waste being collected by Council. “One of her primary roles will be promoting the re-

duction of wet waste; the best way to do that is by increasing composting. That is something Council will put priority on in the coming 12 months. “Currently we are seeing between 5 and 10 instances of illegal dumping in our region each month. This is a four-fold increase in instances and a direct result of the

“We see the solution is more an education one. We believe that working with schools and community groups, building the ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ message will deliver significant benefits in the long run,” stated Cr Millwood. Recently Cassowary Coast Regional Council entered a strategic partnership with Endeavour Foundation with the recycling of old mattresses. “This partnership is proving very successful with a

significant number of old mattresses being processed at the Stoter Hill Transfer Station. We plan to eventually include this service at the Tully Transfer Station,” said Cr Millwood. The collection, processing and disposal of wet waste is a major financial burden within the Cassowary Coast. Currently wet waste is collected and eventually transported to the Atherton Tablelands for disposal and burial. Wet waste volumes have remained fairly static for the past 12 months with no significant reduction of wet waste collected by Council. Currently wet waste is collected from the kerbside and eventually transported to Mareeba for disposal and burial. This process and expense could be reduced significantly if composting initiatives were embraced by residents. Cassowary Coast Council currently run a Community Composting Program where Council offers a $20 rebate for residents purchasing a compost bin or work farm composting system for their household.

Coral backup begins A project to collect samples of all the world’s hard coral species and keep them alive in a Living Coral Biobank has begun, with the first 35 species collected from Vlasoff Reef near Cairns on Friday, November 6. The world-first Living Coral Biobank Project team, led by non-profit organisation Great Barrier Reef Legacy, will preserve the genetic biodiversity of hard coral species by collecting and maintaining living samples of some 800 species, as well as tissue and DNA, as insurance in case of loss of coral species in the wild. The first 35 species, which represent more than eight per cent of all coral species on the Great Barrier Reef, have been fragmented into smaller living pieces, microchipped and are being carefully looked after by Cairns Marine, until plans for a

dedicated ‘coral ark’ facility in Port Douglas can be realised. “With every coral bleaching event, we are losing the most vulnerable corals and coral reefs,” Project Director and Managing Director of Great Barrier Reef Legacy, Dr Dean Miller said. “With three mass bleaching events in just five years, and more than 50 per cent of corals gone in the last few decades, we don’t have a moment to lose.” Dr Miller said they were very lucky to have Cairns Marine on board as a partner, as they are a world leader in live coral collecting, husbandry and distribution. “For the past 40 years we have been perfecting collecting, keeping and transporting corals so that people all around the world can enjoy

Picture by GBR Legacy them when they visit public and private aquariums,” Cairns Marine Director and CEO, Lyle Squire said. “Now we are putting all this knowledge into keeping corals alive for their conservation and preservation.” Once acclimated, the corals will be transferred to the project’s first official holding tank - a complete aquarium system and consumables donated by sponsor Red Sea Tanks, the leading manufacturer of reef Aquariums and water chemistry products worldwide. Several fragments from different colonies of each

species will be kept alive in different places as ‘backups,’ with thousands of public and private aquariums worldwide already signed up to look after fragments. Dr Miller said the Living Coral Biobank Project did not replace but highlighted the urgent need to accelerate actions to reduce the impacts of climate change and local impacts on coral reefs for their long-term survival. “The Living Coral Biobank compliments these efforts by providing us an insurance policy by preserving the full biodiversity of corals and make available living fragments, tis-

sue samples and genetic material which is already in high demand,” he said. “This will aid in research, restoration and resilience efforts to save coral reefs worldwide. To know we already have over eight per cent of Great Barrier Reef species safe and secured is an incredible step forward on our first day of collection.” Corals of the World Director Dr Charlie Veron, also known as the “godfather of coral”, joined the project as one of few people worldwide that could identify corals to species level underwater.

“I’ve collected and identified coral species many times for science; this time I’m doing it for the coral’s very survival,” Dr Veron said. “Without question this is the most important project we can be undertaking for corals and coral reefs and the most important project I have been involved with personally.” Project partner Queensland Museum will use the 35 specimens and preserved DNA samples to better understand the coral’s genetic makeup, as well as creating a permanent record of the biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef.

TIME TO DELIVER ON THE HOSPITAL

It appears the drive for the Cairns University Hospital continues. Whilst there have been no new announcements related to the hospital from the newly elected Palaszczuk government, Federal Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch continues to apply pressure for the green light and funding to flow. This week in Canberra, Warren continued to champion the University Project, challenging the Queensland government to make-good their election promises and include all the state funds required to commence the project in their budget later this month. The Federal Government have already budgeted and allocated $60 million dollars towards the purchase of the land and stage 1 of the project. Promises were made before the election. Funds were promised to purchase the land required and also conduct a business case, however no funds were allocated towards the construction of the promised hospital. It’s time to finish with the political grand standing and focus on delivering on this commitment. Perhaps I am cynical, before the election the north was the flavour of the month, only to be disappointed with the treatment of the north when handing down portfolios. Yes Michael Healy has now been appointed Assistant to the Minister of Tourism. This is indeed good news for the north. Not the ideal outcome for our tourism industry but at least we have a voice at the table.

MINISTERIAL APPOINTMENTS I agree with last week’s editorial. Are ministerial appointments mostly influenced by life’s experiences, rewards for service or ‘factions’? Michael Healy has experience in tourism and our natural attractions. Cynthia Lui is an Islander whose working life has been devoted to the welfare of the Cape and Island community she currently represents as the member for Cook. FNQ would benefit fittingly from their experiences. TONI, Port Douglas

Now is the time for the ALP elected members to all collectively step up and demand the funding be approved and the construction commenced for our University Hospital.

We have 1.4% population growth annually in the north, and along with a higher than state average for people aged 40+ here in the north, our need for an improved health services have never been higher.

“For the university hospital to be operational by the target date of 2025, progress needs to be made now, not in another four years on the eve of yet another state election.” – Warren Entsch I guess we will have to wait until the state budget is handed down to see if the aggressive support shown to the north before the election will count for anything in the cold light of day.

I note the comment from MEG of Cairns (13/11/20) that suggests Cairns Local News is biased towards the environment movement. That is not my impression. Rather, perhaps, you are more “biased” towards environmental issues. Mainstream media covers environmental issues fairly well. In Cairns, Cassowary Coast, Douglas Shire and the Tablelands, the environment is extremely important, not just because areas like the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests are significant eco-systems, but because they are major reasons why people come to Far North Queensland to live or to visit. Our environment is a key factor in our economy and it is in our interests to have media which will report on environmental issues.

In his address to parliament this week, Warren Entsch spoke of the need to move quickly and with purpose to deliver this essential upgrade to our health service here in the North.

Well done QLD, Great game and why have the Broncos not grabbed Bennett as their coach. He is a master

Meg, Cairns (CLN 13/11) bias is always a matter of opinion, what we need is truth. The local environmental movement is in fact a global movement based on science. This week the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and the CSIRO issued a report on the danger Australia is facing from climate change. We have witnessed locally coral bleaching that has damaged the reef putting thousands of jobs in tourism at risk. The world is rapidly moving towards zero emissions especially with a Biden victory in the U.S.A. There will be many opportunities for regional Australia as we move to a sustainable economy. We need our local newspapers to tell the truth and keep us informed of the threat the climate crisis poses to us and future generations. The Cairns Local News should be congratulated for having the courage to speak the truth. John Pratt Mooroobool

Squares are smaller than triangles: Pythagoras proves it WAYNES WORLD Hi Tropicairnians, Here is a topic that goes straight to the heart of my huge belly, toasted sangas. Now we all have our own special toasties that we make, order or beg for.

For me it’s every Saturday and Sunday morning, crispy bacon, tomato, cheese and grilled onion. One with barbeque sauce the other with sweet chilli sauce and most importantly they must be cut in triangle quarters that I share with the store front team. Hold the raging platypus, did I say triangle quarters (mmm at what I just wrote)

yes I did. The apparently knowledgeable people at the big green box on Monday night said there is no difference in volume of sangas if cut in square or triangle quarters. Now this is where the Society for the Science of the Gut and I are in agreeance, against all the other square minded sauce dribbling fools. Way back when John Wayne invented the removable head, I was invited (at a risk to my own personal safety) to be involved in a huge scientific experiment where one short fat dwarf ate square cut quarters and I ate the triangle quarter cut toasties.

Stay cool and remember triangles are bigger than squares, and Pythagoras the original Greek member of the first Big Bang Theory devised a formula to prove that so. Wayne.

Mrs Mills said while they had supported areas from Mareeba, to Forsayth, Cooktown, Georgetown, Croydon and Cairns Hospital, care of babies had always been close to their hearts. “One of our grandchildren spent some time in the Special Care Nursery when he was born, so helping provide this equipment is important to us,” Mrs Mills said.

Reef stars restore life from Mars TANYA MURPHY MARS Incorporated, better known for its popular chocolate bars, has come up with a solution to restore selected areas of dead and damaged coral reef, with a reef restoration project kicking off last week at Green Island. The project developed by Mars Sustainable Solutions involves finding and rescuing thousands of coral fragments which are broken, and attaching them to the frames to enable them to build new stable areas of live coral reef habitat. The trial is a collaboration between Mars and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Quicksilver Cruises and Big Cat Green Island Cruises, the Coral Nurture Program and Gungandji Traditional Owners.

When finished the project will see more than 2600 coral fragments attached to a web of 165 hexagonal, sand-coated metal frames on the seafloor. Additional coral fragments will be connected to suitable hard substrate using coral clips developed through the Coral Nurture Program. Marine Program Manager for Mars Sustainable Solutions Alicia McArdle said it was natural for coral fragments to break off the reef at times (for example in rough weather), but with a range of issues such as climate change increasingly threatening corals it made sense to rescue these “corals of opportunity,” which would otherwise not survive, and use them to build new reefs. “The live fragments will then continue to grow in their new stable location and, over the next one to three years,

Building the Reef Stars and attaching coral on Green Island. Image credit: Commonwealth of Australia (GBRMPA) form a diverse and healthy area of live reef where previously there had been unstable dead coral rubble and bare limestone rock,” she said.

“first work of its kind at Green Island” This method cannot be used to protect the entire

348,700 square kilometres of the Great Barrier Reef from widescale threats like climate change, but Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) CEO Josh Thomas said it would be useful to restore locally important tourist and recreation sites and areas with specific ecological value. “If successful, this restoration technique could be more widely adopted where other local-scale impacts occur from vessel groundings, anchor damage, or cyclone

impacts,” he said. Local tourism operators will help monitor the project with initial results expected within 12 months, and further monitoring to occur over the next five years. This is the first work of its kind at Green Island, and these same techniques are also being trialled by Mars at other reef locations in the Cairns area including Moore Reef. The trial at Green Island uses carefully prepared guidelines to protect the ar-

ea’s ecological and social values. As well as chocolate bars, Mars Incorporated also produces cat food, and developed an interest in reef restoration after seeing the effects of reef destruction on fish populations. They developed the metal reef-star structures on Indonesian reefs, where they were successfully used to rehabilitate over four hectares of reef impacted by destructive fishing techniques.

NICOLE GIBSON The region’s premier women’s empowerment event, Radiance – Illuminating the Strength Within, returns for 2020 with a stunning line up of local speakers on a mission to build confidence, compassion and resilience. Radiance is the flagship annual event from social impact organization, The Social Effect and co-hosted by founder Lesley Van Staveren and local business woman Emma Gelling. Held on Friday 4 December at the Reef Hotel Casino, this year’s event theme is focused on the relationship between what happens for women on an internal level and what manifests in their external world. “It’s very much how everything is connected from our inner dialogue to how we take care of our bodies, movement to those we surround ourselves with and what we tell ourselves,” Lesley said. In a year where resilience and compassion have never been more important, she said she was committed to hosting events like Radiance to help others.

A NEW bridge in the Whyanbeel Valley will give a nod to the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people after Douglas Shire Council voted to name the crossing after a famous mountain in the Daintree National Park called ‘Manjal Jimalji’. The name relates to the creek which runs under the bridge originating from the Devil’s Thumb’ mountain, also known as Manjal Jimalji by Eastern Kuku Yalanji, which rises 1065 metres above sea level. Council unanimously resolved to name the new bridge ‘Jimalji’ earlier this year. The new crossing will give cattle graziers and nearby residents greater access during the wet season. Council recently completed the upgrade works, which saw eight pre-stressed gird-

ers weighing 19 tonnes each installed on Whyanbeel Road across Little Falls Creek to form a bridge. Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said floodwater regularly inundated the old causeway several times each year. “It is great to see this new bridge completed as it will add resilience to the roads in the area and improve access to the Whyanbeel Valley during the wet season,” he said. “The creek crossing was a known hazard for nearby farmers and residents who were effectively cut off when a decent rain set in. “I am also incredibly proud to choose an Eastern Kuku Yalanji name that helps reconnect future generations to the deeper context of this land and the ancient culture that sculpted it.”

Key ‘Our Cairns’ Survey Results

• There was great support (74 per cent) to allow dogs to be in the CBD, though most wanted pet owners to be required to pick up after their animal or be made to do so by officers. • The majority of Cairns residents (76 per cent) say they always feel safe in their suburb while 22 per cent said they did not feel safe, or only felt safe sometimes. • Twenty-eight per cent of people said they had been a victim of crime while 71 per cent had not. • The majority of those who responded that they did not always feel safe came from the following suburbs: Edmonton (149), Bentley Park (86), Mooroobool (81), Mt Sheridan (72), Earlville (70), Manunda (69), Cairns City (65), Manoora (64), White Rock (56), Cairns North (56), Gordonvale (55), and Trinity Beach (52). Cairns residents Don and Julie McLeod with Sunny and Coco the dogs believe dogs should be allowed in the CBD and alcohol should be allowed on the Esplanade in a controlled manner.

• The majority of people (77 per cent) called for more police on Cairns Streets, but most (67 per cent) did not want Council to introduce suburban security patrols.

What Cairns residents want TANYA MURPHY Would you like to be allowed to legally have a beer or other alcoholic beverage, while relaxing and enjoying a barbecue or picnic on the Cairns Esplanade? For sixty-two per cent of Cairns residents the answer is “Yes,” according to the Cairns Regional Council’s “Our Cairns” Survey which was published this week. Mayor Bob Manning has thanked the 6783 residents who completed the Our Cairns Survey and the 1280 young people who filled out the inaugural Youth Survey, making it biggest ever response to a community survey in Cairns. Sixty-two per cent of respondents supported the idea of being able to drink legally on the esplanade, how-

ever, the majority believed it should only be allowed on certain days and times.

“I also love dogs, but I can see problems with allowing them in the CBD.”

After seeing the survey results, Cr Manning said he was surprised to see that so many people were opposed to electric scooters, but agreed that bikes shouldn’t be allowed on footpaths.

Division Five Councillor Amy Eden said she was glad to see that most people supported the idea of one-laning of some CBD streets to make way for more green space.

“I don’t find the scooters that offensive at all. I see them in Brisbane, I see them in Townsville, I see them in other centres and it seems to be working alright. They get along at a fairly ordinary pace,” he said. “As for drinking on the Esplanade we’ll have to look at it because it’s not easy and we have to consult with the police as well, because the police patrol these areas and we need to make sure there’s no fighting and bad behaviour.

“It will cool down the temperature in the CBD and make it greener and more pedestrian friendly, while providing more space for cycle lanes,” she said. She also supported the idea of alcohol consumption to being allowed, in a controlled manner, on the Esplanade. “The Esplanade is very secure in the sense that we have CCTV cameras. security, it’s well lit and there are amenities there,” she said. “I think lots of people would love to be able to grab

some takeaway food from the night markets and have a drink on the Esplanade as long as it’s done responsibly.” Cr Manning said results with clear majority answers would be looked at by Council in developing its new Corporate Plan and advocating for infrastructure, facilities and funding. Cr Manning was especially happy to see so many young people complete the Youth Survey. “Leading on from a very successful Youth Climate Summit held late last year, we know that young people are desperate to have say on issues that affect their future, such as the environment, safety, education and employment.”

• Eighty-three per cent of respondents said cyclists shouldn’t be allowed to use CBD foot paths, and the majority of respondents (38 per cent) were against the introduction of the electric scooters for commercial hire in Cairns, because they are restricted to footpath use which many people thought was dangerous. • The majority of respondents (63 per cent) were opposed to any suggestion to host a Schoolies Week in Cairns. • The majority (84 per cent) of respondents supported the idea to create a Signature Destination event for Cairns, with the most common themes nominated being Reef and Rainforest. • The one-laning of some CBD streets generated 65 per cent support from respondents. Of those who were against one-laning (25 per cent), 64 per cent of those had concerns it would cause traffic disruptions and 35 per cent thought it would discourage people from going into the CBD. • Removing some centre median parking in the CBD to create green spaces was supported by 69 per cent of respondents. • Among respondents there was broad recognition that the health of Great Barrier Reef is not as good as it could be, with only 15 per cent agreeing it’s alive and well, while 51 per cent accept there has been some negative consequences for the reef due to bleaching, and 33 per cent believe the Reef is in trouble and in danger of dying. • Go to https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/council/havesay/closed/ourcairns for the full list of results.

Taxation Basics for Business

Your rights and obligations when dealing with the ATO DURING these difficult times, the ATO want to remind you that they’re there to help and there is support available to business owners as taxpayers.

DR RAY HAMEY Tax can be a very boring or interesting topic, depending on your perspective. The tax system is designed to collect money from you and when you get a refund from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), well, it was really yours to start with. The ATO doesn’t give you anything unless it’s a bill!

a typical man who gets a receipt for work related expenditure and files it. Just where do most receipts end up? In the glovebox, the tool box, the pockets or in the washing machine. Terrific!

The best way to get a bigger refund or to minimize the tax bill is to keep good records. Have you heard that before?

The ATO will not accept washed out or faded receipts. The taxpayer must be able to prove the deductions and it is not a game to claim all sorts of expenses without the documentation. Do not get too clever with the ATO as this is serious. It must be noted that not all expenses are tax deductible.

Now let’s take a case of

Record-keeping may not

be your forte, but you need to file receipts to prove expenditure. Bank statements, credit card statements, and receipts are very valuable items to record your income and expenditure for tax purposes. Many people think that if they make it up, their chances of being caught out are fairly well minimal. This is true to a certain degree, but it pays not to get too clever. It is essential for businesses to have appropriate accounting software to record income and expenditure. Now the other thing to

think about is that the employer must have payroll software to pay staff. There are no more paper-issued certificates as it is all now electronic. Every payday, the employer is to electronically file with the ATO, listing the details of the gross income, tax withheld, and superannuation. The ATO is checking to ensure employers fulfil their obligations and the ATO cross-checks the superannuation that is paid. Unfortunately, many employers have not paid superannuation and this is a sure fire way for the ATO to monitor such.

The Taxpayers’ Charter outlines your rights and obligations and what you can expect from the ATO in administering the tax and superannuation systems. In their dealings with you, they’re committed to: - treating you fairly and respectfully - treating you as being honest - making it as easy as possible for you to get things right - providing you with service that is professional, respectful and timely - respecting your right to a review - respecting your right to make a complaint. If you’re worried you won’t be able to pay on

time, or have already missed a due date, contact the ATO or your tax practitioner as early as possible. It’s never too late to speak with the ATO, they may be able to help you: - set up a payment plan -defer a lodgment or payment - fast track your tax return. - If you disagree with a decision they have made about your tax affairs, you can ask them to review our decision. You may also be able to apply for compensation if their actions give rise to a legal liability or you have financial losses caused by their defective administration. More details are available from the ATO website.

MOTORING

Friday November 20, 2020

Cairns Local News

SUPER SUV GRUNT WHEN it arrived in Australia at the end of 2018, the Audi SQ8 instantly struck a chord with customers and the Australian motoring press with its bold styling, spacious luxury interior and performance.

package, the interior mood and environment can be fine tuned to suit every taste and situation, while the now familiar MMI touch response system with its dual screens provide easy operation of all on-board and vehicle systems with a simple touch – complete with satisfying acoustic and haptic feedback.

Here was a large, luxury SUV that was effectively the SUV equivalent of the Audi A8 – a flagship, showcasing all that the brand had to offer.

Traffic Lights The blue car and orange motorbike are both travelling straight ahead in a builtup area. The traffic lights change to yellow. Are both vehicles required to stop? In this image, the blue car does not need to stop as it has already entered the intersection. The motorbike must stop as close as practicable to, but before reaching the stop line, unless it is unsafe to do so. A yellow traffic light is the beginning of the red-light phase, not the end of the green. Traffic lights control the flow of vehicles and pedestrians to improve safety and access to roads. You should

drive at a speed that gives you time to react if the traffic lights change. If you go through a yellow or red traffic light, you may receive an infringement notice. The notice could either be from a police officer or arrive in the mail for a camera-detected offence. You may drive through a flashing yellow light or arrow with caution. You need to apply the give way rules to avoid colliding with other vehicles. Drivers approaching, or at, a yellow traffic light must stop if they are able to do so before reaching the stop line unless it is not safe.

DIAGNOSTICS & REPAIR

Now, that compelling combination of absolute luxury, technology and appointment is combined with the famous Audi S performance, in a vehicle that adds a whole new dimension to the SUV ranks. The distinctive styling of the original Q8 has been further enhanced with a strikingly sporty exterior design which includes S body styling (S front and rear bumpers, grille, side sills and rear tailgate spoiler), 22-inch alloy wheels. Matrix LED headlights with dynamic rear indicators, rear brake callipers, adaptive air suspension sport, exterior mirrors in aluminium look, privacy glass, power assisted door closure and metallic paint. Performance and handling more than live up to strong design, with a twin turbo 4.0 TDI V8 engine, producing a stonking 320kW of power

ALCOHOL INTERLOCKS

CAMPING

and an incredible 900Nm of torque from 1250rpm right through to 3250rpm. Mated to an eight-speed tiptronic transmission with power down through all four wheels, this translates to a 0 to 100km/h time of just 4.8 seconds on the way to an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h. Yet despite the incredible acceleration, the SQ8 is able to deliver fuel figures of 7.8L/100km and emissions of 205 grams of CO2 per kilometre. Acceleration and straightline speed are just the beginning in the SQ8, with all-wheel steering, adaptive air suspension and electromechanical active roll stabilisation all contributing to its razor-sharp handling.

Drawing power from a 48-volt mild-hybrid electrical system (MHEV) – which also powers a electric powered compressor (EPC) used to spool up the turbos – the SQ8 exhibits handling characteristics more common in a high-powered sportscar, sitting flat with nary a hint of body roll even on tight, twisting roads and high-speed bends. Inside its enormous interior are S sport front seats in Valcona leather upholstery complete with distinctive diamond pattern stitching. The attention to detail throughout is nothing short of superb, with state-of-the-art technology seamlessly integrated into the interior. With four-zone climate control and ambient lighting

Everything is of course within easy reach of the driver, who also controls the various systems via the leather multi-function flat-bottom sports wheel or using the voice command system. The Audi virtual cockpit and Audi Smartphone Interface are standard equipment, while the Audi connect plus navigation provides a range of entertainment and information services through the high-speed internet access from the embedded SIM in the SQ8 TDI. This combination places the SQ8 in a unique position, boasting as it does, sportscar performance and handling in a large, luxury SUV that wants for absolutely nothing. One of the rare occasions it seems you actually can please all of the people, all of the time.

THE GERMAN MIDWIFE

RELAX AND UNWIND

Cairns Local News

Television

Mandy Robotham Imagine it’s 1944 in a German Concentration Camp where a young mid-wife uses her skills, courage and compassion to deliver a new generation into an evil world controlled by the Reich. Chosen to attend the birth of Hitler’s first born to his mistress Eva Braun, Anne is placed in an impossible dilemma, where she faces a decision abhorrent to her values. Does she help and assist the Reich by ensuring the safe arrival of Hitler’s child or does she sacrifice her morals and professional code to take an innocent child’s life for the greater good? An unforgettable page turner where the horrors of war, the evil of mankind are balanced by bravery, empathy, love and hope. The German Midwife a novel by Mandy Robotham Review by Catie McCullagh

THE FREEDOM CIRCUS

Sue Smethurst

Written by award-winning author and journalist Sue Smethurst, whose husband is Mindla and Michael’s grandson, The Freedom Circus is an epic story of courage, hope, humanity, survival and, ultimately, love. When Sue Smethurst first sat down with her grandmother-in-law and asked how she survived the Holocaust, she was shooed away. By that time Mindla was in a Melbourne Jewish nursing home with other survivors, her body ageing but mind still razor sharp. ‘Why do you want to know?’ she’d ask. ‘My story is nothing special.’ The tale of how Mindla and her husband Michael Horowitz, a circus performer for the famous Staniewski Brothers, TVBLACKBOX.COM.AU escaped from Poland with their young son and embarked on NINE Network a terrifying journey through the USSR and Middle East to Af‘Good Onya Mate’ Sat Nov 28 rica and ultimately to safety in Australia, is nothing short of extraordinary. The star-studded concert will raise money for Rural Aid and say “Good Onya Mate” to our Aussie farmers who have survived drought, bushfire, floods and COVID-19.

These challenges create financial, emotional and practical hurdles for this crucial sector of our community and economy – the people who put food on our tables and clothes on our back. The concert will be packed with incredible performances and will also include heartfelt stories of farmers who have benefited from Rural Aid’s assistance. Performing on the night will be Jimmy Barnes, Birds Of Tokyo, Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy, Vera Blue, Kate Ceberano, Natalie Bassingthwiate, Dami Im, Casey Donovan, Mick Lindsay, Lee Kernaghan, Isaiah Firebrace, Chris Sebastian, Timothy and Clare Bowen, Travis Collins, Mike Waters, Darlinghurst and Ballpark Music with more exciting names to be announced. “A big shout out to everybody in our rural communities on our farms. Drought, COVID-19 and recession have really taken

its toll. It’s really difficult and we are thinking about you,” said Jimmy Barnes. Donations made during the concert will go to supporting farmers across Australia through Rural Aid’s new Stronger Futures program, which is dedicated to helping farmers develop strong and sustainable futures for their families and local communities, as well as Rural Aid’s disaster assistance program. “The Stronger Futures program is our plan to enable resilient and sustainable rural communities to thrive into the future,” “The money raised will underpin our rural counselling services because one conversation at the right time, with the right person, can change everything. It will allow Rural Aid to continue its community building – to work with towns to bring their renewal projects to life,” said CEO of Rural Aid, John Walters. The concert will be hosted by Karl Stefanovic, Allison Langdon, Richard Wilkins, Erin Molan, Brooke Boney and Alex Cullen from the beautiful Bella Vista Farm in Sydney. 200 music videos in 6 years

Cairns based online music video channel, MusicViewTV, this month celebrates six years of operation and its 200th video, and is also nearing one million streams of their videos. Originally part of the New York based BalconyTV, MusicViewTV showcases local and national musicians playing live, accompanied with an artist interview. “It’s been a wild ride. I took up the offer to do sound a couple of months after the first show, then a year and a half later I took over as producer,” said producer Kris Hutchinson. In February 2019, BalconyTV New York abruptly terminated the network of producers from 50 cities worldwide. “The decision at the time was, do we just fold or should we rebrand and go it alone.

After heaps of encouragement from the team and more importantly my wife, we decided to forge ahead,” said Mr Hutchinson. Since its inception in 2014 MusicViewTV has kept the same format. “We have stuck to the original BalconyTV format because we know it works,” said presenter Aleta Tulk. “People on the internet have short attention spans, so we try to keep introductions short, get straight into a song and then interview the artist and get to know them and see what makes them tick after.” Part of the philosophy to MusicViewTV is the production values. “We multi-track every session and go back to the studio and mix it properly,” said Mr Hutchinson.

Shad & Pete

Save the World

WE all have problems… and who better to solve yours than two unqualified comedians with nothing better to do on a Saturday night? On Saturday November 28, at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC), join Cairns local comedians Shad Wicka and Peter James as they provide haphazard solutions to your every quandary with a 100 per cent success rate.

Are you a venue or an artist that wants to be listed in the Gig Guide? Please send your gigs to tanya@cairnslocalnews.com.au by Wednesday each week to be listed in Friday’s paper.

| 31

Got a problem that needs solving? Just write it down on the paper provided, put it

in the buckets and watch as these two geniuses (or idiots, depending on how you look at it) do their best to come up with improvised solutions on the spot with the help of two special guests all the way from Brisbane: Dusty Rich and Nick Carr!

So if you’re looking for a ‘quiet and respectful night’ of theatre, you might want to give this one a miss… because for one night only the CPAC is leaving its monocle at home and letting its hair down in a way that it never

has before.

Convention is out the window and mayhem is running the show. It’s loose, it’s boozy, and absolutely anything can happen. United Nations eat your heart out – Shad and Pete are here to save the world! This program is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. Rated R for age 18 and over. Tickets at www.cairns. qld.gov.au/CPAC

STAR GUIDE AQUARIUS: Find a common cause on Monday. You’ll do your best work -- and have the most fun, too! -- if you can connect with others who want the same things you do. On Tuesday and Wednesday, you’ll need to buckle down a little if you’re hoping to make the same progress. That rebel spirit of yours has you champing at the bit, but fighting the flow will only leave you feeling worn out. On Thursday and Friday, a big boost of energy and inspiration will instigate a change. You’ve got a radical new take on things, and others want to hear your vision. This weekend, put yourself first and don’t let anybody else get you sidetracked. PISCES: Luck is on your side on Monday! Fortune favors you as the week begins, provided you’re smart and attentive about how you press your advantage. On Tuesday and Wednesday, lead the way. Others will look to you to guide the group, and you’ll have no problem picking the proper path. On Thursday and Friday, you’ll want to help everyone you meet -- and you just might be able to pull it off. Remember that all you need to do sometimes is point people in the direction of what they need. This weekend, indulge yourself. The more lavish the activity, the better.

GEMINI: You just can’t beat teamwork, at least not on Monday. You’ll get the most done (and have the most fun) if you can partner up with others and work towards a common goal. On Thursday and Friday, expect an unusual influence -- probably from a conversation with someone charismatic. You’ll see things differently and could be inspired to take radical action. This weekend, focus on the big picture and your own creativity, and don’t fret just because things aren’t crystal clear.

LIBRA: You can communicate with unusual quickness and clarity as the week begins. Use your excellent articulation to explore big ideas and let others know what you’re really thinking. On Thursday and Friday, it’s time to take on something (or someone) new. Variety will spice up your state of mind, and that novelty could even bring some romance along with it. This weekend, look for harmony and beauty in life’s little things -- and share your perspective with someone else.

CANCER: Do something for yourself on Monday! You’ve done enough for others lately, and you deserve some healthy self-indulgence -- especially if it involves some quiet time to yourself. Work things out on your own rather than looking for help, and strive to strike a balance between ideas competing in your head. On Thursday and Friday, your thoughts will drift to money and material possessions. his weekend, harness an unusual burst of energy and intuition to make deep connections with the people you care about.

SCORPIO: Go on and get up caught up in the moment on Monday! Your week begins with an overdue surge of impulsiveness -- although beware that someone influential might encourage you to take a clearly unreasonable risk. On Tuesday and Wednesday, hit up the boss (or some other authority figure) to get what you want. Opportunities have finally aligned themselves to match your ambitions, and you need to strike while the iron is hot. Keep a cool head and find creative ways to calm the conflict. This weekend, indulge your imagination and playfulness.

ARIES: Make a big splash as the week begins! Monday is an excellent day for pioneering ideas and activities, and all eyes are on you as you forge a new path. You just need to focus on getting things done. Thursday and Friday are likewise great days for action and advancement, but that focus will shift slightly to include getting help from (giving help to) other like-minded people. That karmic trend continues into the weekend, and you can help yourself best by helping others.

LEO: Romance is on the rise on Monday! You’re full of fire and flirtatiousness as the week begins, and your energy knows no bounds -- expect others (naturally) to fall smitten at your feet. On Thursday and Friday, beware of potential conflicts and clashes. Your ego could get the better of you right now, and you may need to let go rather than cling too tightly. On Saturday and Sunday, avoid any interaction involving money. This time is better spent making art and getting in touch with your instincts.

TAURUS: You might have a hard time trusting others on Monday, and you should pay heed to that hesitance. Risks right now probably won’t pay off, and you need watch out for your own priorities. On Thursday and Friday, forge ahead on your own plans and don’t get distracted -- especially by anyone who’s just looking to get a rise out of you for their own entertainment. This weekend, don’t go solo. You’ll have the best time if you can team up with friends -- and the crazier your plans, the better.

VIRGO: You’ll want to rush ahead on Monday, but you can’t. Obligations and obstacles block your way as the week begins, and you’ll need to just go with the flow. On Tuesday and Wednesday, all that hard work and planning you did will finally pay off. Your ambitions will be satisfied right now -- in your work and maybe even in your love life. On Thursday and Friday, you might need to take a new approach. Keep an open mind and consider conducting an unusual experiment. This weekend, you’ll need to make peace with other people’s pace -- no amount of heckling will hurry them up.

SAGITTARIUS: It’s a red-letter Monday! Ah, if only all your weeks could start out this way. All your best qualities -- your playfulness, optimism and good-natured charm -- are doubled for the day. People, predictably, just can’t stay away from you. Satisfy this unusual obsession with details and penny pinching by dreaming up original ways to save (like packing your own gourmet lunch). T Explore with creativity and confidence. This weekend, you can accomplish a lot (mentally, at least) by just staying in bed and daydreaming. CAPRICORN: Anything is possible on Monday with a little perseverance. You just need to dig in and stick to your plans to make things happen as the week begins. On Thursday and Friday, you might want to switch things up a little -- try some spontaneous solutions and ad hoc approaches to the problems at hand. This weekend, make close connections with others. Use your charm and creativity to communicate clearly.

Cayla’s Court

CAYLA GEORGE Welcome back for week two of Cayla’s Court where I bring you all the action from the 2020 WNBL. I will recap the week that was and give you my top picks for the must see matches as

round two comes to a close this weekend. Sadly, this round sees us end the week a team down. When I said the teams would face unique challenges this season I don’t think anyone could have predicted Adelaide being

sent back into quarantine. I can safely say every player in every team is thinking of them and looking forward to seeing them back on the court soon. When it comes to play, Southside are still the team to beat with seven past and present Opals in their ranks. This weekend sees us kick off games in Cairns which should all be really good battles. Hope to see you courtside at one of the matches and join me again next week for all the goss from round three. Saturday November 21

From the Fire Pit NICOLE GIBSON The Townsville Fire have started strong in the 2020 WNBL season taking out two of their first three matches. They succumbed to reigning champions, the UC Capitals, in a hard fought second match, however coach Shannon Seebohm said he believed his side was on the right track. “I feel like there’s probably a few areas both offensively and defensively that we can improve and the girls are certainly working towards that but I think we’re on the right path,” Seebohm. The end of round two this weekend sees the Fire with back to back games against the Bendigo Spirit in Townsville on

Saturday and Sunday. Seebohm said smart play and confidence would be key for the Fire in these matches with Bendigo expected to play hard to take home the wins. “Watching them play they’re getting better every game they play here,” he said. “I know they’re going to play hard to pick up a win or two in the games against us. “We need to play with a lot of effort and obviously a lot of smarts and just keep getting better at what we’ve been doing and keep playing with a lot of confidence.” Off the back of the Bendigo matches Townsville will get just a day’s rest before taking on, the Melbourne Boomers for their

first round three match on Tuesday night. “We’re going to have to play extremely physically and obviously battle really hard on the rebounds because they’ve got a lot of size,” Seebohm said. “They have a very talented roster and they’re very deep so again we’re going to have to be very prepared for that one.” Townsville are also expected to play ladder leaders the Adelaide Lightning on Thursday night however it remained to be seen if the game would proceed as normal after the Lightning were forced into quarantine on Tuesday due to a COVID-19 outbreak in their home town.

6.30pm Cairns: Perth vs Southside: Perth battle. They’ve got some tall youth there and some good size. Hopefully they’ve got Katie Rae Ebzery back and Alex Ciabattoni and they can really take Southside on Saturday. 8.30pm Cairns: Sydney vs UC Capitals: The Capitals are well drilled and have a nice chunk of core players that are back from injury so they’re slowly getting their squad back which is good. They are the reigning champions, back to back and play really smart basketball. Syd-

ney Uni play pretty hard and they’re coming into the league with a fresh team so this will be a good battle. Sunday November 22 12pm Townsville: Melbourne vs Adelaide: postponed 2pm Townsville: Bendigo vs Townsville: Bendigo are continuing to get better as a young side but will need to keep improving defensively to stay in the game vs Townsville, especially on their home court!

PETER MCCULLAGH ALTHOUGH stinger nets are out and beach patrols are winding back, it’s still a busy schedule for North Queensland Surf Life Savers. A large contingent attended the Northern Australian Championships earlier this month in Mackay with the Cairns Surf Life Savers Club returning triumphant after three gruelling days of competition. The Cairns Club, based at Palm Cove competed against the best surf athletes from Harvey Bay to Ellis Beach winning every division, Pool Rescue, Junior, Senior, Mas-

ters and the coveted Overall Champions for the event. Cairns Surf Club have dominated the sport for the past decade or more, this year’s Overall win is the 10th year in succession Cairns have finished on top. The Championships featured all events including beach flags and sprints, belt rescue, ski, Surf Ironman and Ironwoman events. The competition also features an IRB competition, surf boat competition, pool rescue competition and Champion Lifesaver.

Falcons soar to a win

IN their first outing for the 2020/21 Gridiron Season, the Cairns Falcons recorded a big win over the new team, Townsville Chargers. The season opened last weekend with a 46 – 8 thumping at Vico Oval in Cairns. A win in the first game is a complete opposite to last season slow start. The Falcons Coach was reported to be pleased with the result and also pleased his team were focussed on the entire season and not just the early win. Falcon’s rookie Quarterback, Brenden Kruger controlled the game showing maturity and patience. The Falcons will meet the Mackay Mavericks this weekend in Townsville.

Seven members from Cairns Surf Club have been named in the Queensland Country team set to compete on the Gold Coast in late November. Representing the region are Under 13 Summer Tottman, Briarna Wilkinson, Logan Stevens, Under 15 Zara Stevens, Bryce Menzies, Under 17 Jackson Rogers and Murray Colbridge. There were also 5 Age Champions at the recent event. Summer Tottman U13, Jackson Rogers U17, Alisha

Davy Open, Helen Leicht 50+ and Peter Lade 60+. Time for John to split TANYA MURPHY ONE of Cairns’ most beloved gymnastics coaches, and a valued member of the Edge Hill Bowls Club, will say goodbye to the region next week. John Straatsma, 75, has taught more than 5000 gymnastics students at Cairns PCYC over the past ten years, but was made redundant after COVID-19 brought the classes to a sudden halt. He is moving to the Sunshine Coast to be closer to his daughter and grandchild and extended a fond goodbye to all his students. “I’m really sad that I never

got a chance to say a proper farewell to my students, so I want to tell them that I really enjoyed teaching them and best of luck for the future,” he said. Mr Straatsma has been teaching gymnastics and high school sport programs, including badminton, soccer, basketball, and volleyball as well as outdoor education activities like bush walking, kayaking and scuba diving in four different states since 1967. He said it was a blessed life. “It has been an absolute privilege to have had the opportunity to work with thousands of kids and adults from 1967 to 2020. I look back

over the years and feel blessed. And I’m not quite finished yet,” he said. The sprightly 75-year-old is still as fit as a fiddle doing cartwheels, handstands and trampoline flips and said he would continue seeking opportunities to teach in his new hometown. “He’s down here most nights offering to teach beginners. His dedication has been phenomenal. We’re sad to be losing him and will miss him terribly,” said Mr Victor.

“John’s 50 years of coaching experience has been invaluable to the young people of Cairns,” he said.

PCYC Sergeant Peter Fitzpatrick said John’s departure was a great loss to the Cairns PCYC and the Cairns gymnastics community and

WITH two weeks training under their belts the Northern Pride are starting to shape their 2021 season. Strong recruiting has experience and versatility added to the squad along with key re-signings adding speed and size. Rod Griffin was one of the key signatures Northern Pride coach Ty Williams had on his agenda. Griffin brings a wealth of experience and football culture to the team. After a false start to the 2020 season, Griffin was contemplating retirement after a long and rather arduous career on the football paddock. After a ‘heart-to-heart’ with his coach, Griffin re-signed for one more tilt at the title.
