The dens are being built just beyond known quoll habitat. If they successfully draw quolls back out into flat savannah land, they may be a valuable tool to reconnect isolated populations of quolls and improve the endan gered species’ genetic health.

“Artificial dens have only been used previously on rehabilitating mine sites’’ Dr Dennis said.

Dr Dennis said quolls suffered an 80 per cent decline in Queens

The Barlow Park and Showgrounds site is the natural location for the pre cinct – it is centrally located, has ample space, and there is room.

The report identified sev eral development opportuni ties to help facilitate the site’s elevation to premier regional sporting and events precinct, including a methodology to upgrade Barlow Park and the Showgrounds, partnering with stakeholders to establish a high-performance hub, and enhancing the aesthetics of the site to be more open and inviting.Council will also look to capitalise on the opportuni ties associated with the 2032 Olympic Games and current stakeholder interest.

During last week’s Council Or dinary Meeting, Council endorsed the Major Events Precinct Vision and Development Opportunities Report, which outlined a strategic approach to evolving Barlow Park and the Cairns Showgrounds site into a premier regional sporting and events precinct.

“By capitalising on the precinct’s advantageous location, we can bring two established sites together to provide something for everyone – from world-class events and experiences to daily opportunities for sport, recreation, community activ ity, education and training,” Cr Manning said.

Over the years I have watched the Amateurs change. In the early days the Races were a sort of picnic day, where people brought along their foldup chairs and picnic blankets, as well as their food and drinks. A sea of people covered the grass areas alongside the racetrack’s long home strait, and there were more people located out of sight behind the horse stables.

Who’s running this show? What’s happened to the money made from previous Amateurs Race meetings? The money has definitely not gone into building more infrastructure for the public areas, the reverse is the case. The public areas have now become no more than an after-thought, just like the bookmakers.

The Amateurs are definitely not amateur anymore, but in an other sense, they are very amateur.

Ruth Beatrice Fairfax was a key inspiration in the early days, becoming founding President in 1922 and this led to the creation of 283 Branches with 13,000 members by 1928.

Over the years there have been many inspiring activities available, such as music and drama, cooking contests, photogra phy, public speaking and dressmaking.

The branch also supported the World War II effort by mem bers making camouflage nets, knitting soldiers socks and making up Christmas parcels for the troops.

Lots of tasty things to help raise funds

1954 was a significant year when the branch took a resolu tion to the State Conference that the QCWA lobby Government for a High School to be established in Mossman. A year later, a request was received from the Education Department for the use of the QCWA rooms for six months for nine students to start Mossman High School.

The Hotel Central hosted travellers from Mareeba and as far away as Thursday Island.

The city’s population swelled to 50,000 with many visitors descending on the city from neighboring districts. Truckloads and carloads of people reportedly came down from Kuranda and the Atherton Tablelands. Almost the entire populations of Tully, Innisfail and Babinda came up to town from the south.
