BRINGING HOLLYWOOD TO CAIRNS

PROPOSED STUDIO WILL SHINE THE SPOTLIGHT ON CAIRNS TANYA MURPHY THE Labor Party’s election promise to invest $6.8 million in a film studio for Cairns has full support from local film industry professional John Baker. John has been working in the film and television industry for 25 years, and his business Film Crew NQ supplies lighting, gripping and other equipment for film and television productions. He said I was “incredibly excited” for what would be a massive boost for his business and the region.

“I’ve worked with countless large production companies who come from all over the world to shoot film, television and advertising projects in Far North Queensland because of our stunning locations, but at the moment they have to base themselves elsewhere. “With a studio in Cairns, major film companies would set up a base here and that would provide a huge boost to jobs and investment. “The film industry doesn’t just employ camera people and directors, it also employs electricians, builders, carpenters, mechanics, caterers, prop makers, dress

makers, and more. “Film productions also bring in big teams of crew who stay in accommodation, eat at restaurants, and visit tourist attractions, a boost which Innisfail benefited from hugely

city and region, and people around the world seeing the incredible and beautiful imagery shot in this region, it will also attract more tourists here, just like what ‘Lord of the Rings’ has done for New

“With a studio in Cairns, major film companies would set up a base here and that would provide a huge boost to jobs and investment. during the filming of SBS series ‘Hungry Ghosts,’ which I was involved with last year. “If we have a lot of A-list celebrities hanging out in our

Zealand. “Cairns is perfectly placed to work symbiotically with the film industry on the

Gold Coast, because we have direct flights between the two places, so a major production could easily work simultaneously in both places. “If a studio was built here, I would definitely have a lot more confidence to invest more money in my film business and purchase more equipment and vehicles. “At the moment I have another business which is an advertising agency, but my true passion is film and I’d be very excited to be able to make film my main job without having to leave FNQ, and I know a lot of my colleagues would feel the same.”

The Labor Party will establish a significant film industry presence in the Cairns region and create jobs with a $6.8 million investment in a new film studio if re-elected. The FNQ Sound Stage will create jobs by attracting film productions to the region while also providing a training ground for the Queensland filmmakers of the future. Subject to successful completion of a business case, including possible investment by commercial partners, the $6.8 million investment could include construction of a purpose-built sound stage, office and teaching space, lights, camera and sound equipment, rooftop and solar battery systems, and additional dedicated set-building space. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said creating a film-making precinct in Cairns would grow jobs as part of Queensland’s plan for economic recovery and build on successes in attracting film production to other parts of the state. “We’ve created more than 10,000 jobs in Queensland by investing more than $80 million in our Production Attraction Strategy, including filming and production of films like Thor: Ragnarok, Aquaman and the new Baz Luhrmann Elvis biopic,” the Premier said. Labor Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt, a longtime passionate advocate for the FNQ Screen Production Strategic Plan he launched with the Premier in 2018, said the $6.8 million investment would put the Cairns region in prime position to take advantage of burgeoning global demand for production capacity. “Queensland has always been an attractive destination for film and TV productions and now we are also viewed as a safe destination in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mr Pitt said.

Stinger nets return

The weather is heating up which means we are entering stinger season. Stinger nets were scheduled to be installed across the Cassowary Coast region from Wednesday , weather permitting. Nets will be situated at: Etty Bay, Kurrimine Beach, Mission Beach and South Mission Beach During the warmer months, marine stingers may be present in our tropical waters. You can minimise your risk of getting a nasty sting by always swimming in stinger nets where provided, wearing protective clothing, and not swimming when beaches are closed. For the current status of beaches located in our region, please visit the Surf Life Saving website at: http:// www.nqlifesaving.com.au/ beach-reports/ First Aid for Tropical Marine Stings 1. Call for medical help (ring 000). 2. Assess the patient and perform CPR if necessary. 3. Douse the sting site with vinegar as soon as possible. Vinegar inactivates the stinging cells, preventing them from injecting more venom. 4. Reassure the patient and keep calm until medical help arrives. 5. Wait at least 45 minutes before re-entering the water.

Deadly designs from young creatives TANYA MURPHY

YEAR 12 students Janice Ghee and Kayden Bosun assisted in creating the logo design for online accounting software company ‘Deadly Digits’ thanks to the help of a new Indigenous digital design learning facility. Based in Cairns, IndigeDesign Labs is a new Indigenous-led creative learning lab which seeks to equip young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creatives for potential careers in the digital design and creative fields. Free workshops are held at the facility every Wednesday night and Saturday morning and are open to all Indigenous people aged 16-25 with no prior art or design skills required.

So far, ten enthusiastic participants have been attending the workshops twice weekly to learn everything from graphic design, digital content creation, technology, photography, videography, augmented reality and UI/UX design. One of their current projects is working on a film clip for local Hip Hop collective Water Streets, and they will be involved in every aspect of production from filming and editing to promotion and artwork. The IndigeDesign program was started six months ago by Leigh Harris, Creative Director of digital design agency Ingeous Studios, to pass on some of his knowledge and years of experience to aspiring young designers. “There are so many digital design applications our

young people can use to tell their stories in new ways, and I’m keen to share what I know and support young people to take on bold projects,” he said. As well as receiving funding from the philanthropic body John T Reid Trusts, IndigeDesign partnered with NorthSite Contemporary Arts who donated the space for

the facility in the Bulmba-ja arts centre. Participant Janice Ghee said she gained a lot from the program. “It’s a digital world and I want to experience incorporating cultural design in modern technology and gain more experiences in digital design,” she said.

“This program has provided everyone with great new experiences, and I’m really thinking about it as a career now.” The company they designed the logo for, Deadly Digits, aims to harness the explosion in Indigenous businesses in Queensland with its comprehensive online accounting software.

Vote of conscience

TANYA MURPHY LOCAL Anglican Priest Neil Forgie says climate change is the biggest moral and spiritual issue for people to consider this election. In the media this week, Cairns Catholic Bishop James Foley stated he was “perplexed” about who to vote for, with Labor’s progressive stance on euthanasia and abortion being the biggest moral issues for him. But Rev. Forgie told Cairns Local News the decision was crystal clear for him that the biggest issue was climate change. “I advise parishioners to consult their moral conscience in regard to what sort of planet we leave for future generations when they head to the polls, because the ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world it leaves to its children. “The official consensus of the Anglican church both

nationally and internationally is that climate change is no longer a matter up for debate, it is a fact, and we have a moral obligation to do something about it.” The Australian Labor party have committed to achieve 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030 through a $500 million investment in publicly-owned renewables such as wind and solar backed by battery storage, while the Greens have committed to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030, and the Liberal-National Party have not committed to any renewable energy targets. “In an open letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, myself and more than 150 faith leaders have declared that the climate situation is an emergency and urged a halt to all new coal and gas projects, starting with the proposed Adani mine,” said Rev. Forgie.

“We recognise that climate change is not only a scientific, environmental, economic and political issue – it is also a profoundly moral and spiritual one. “The wellbeing of human beings is dependent on ecological flourishing, and it is the vulnerable people of the world who are most impacted by climate change. “This Queensland election, as we rebuild from the pandemic, we have a rare chance to create a safer, fairer and more sustainable society. For the sake of our kids, we must seize it. “This Queensland election we want to see decisive government policy enabling a faster transition to renewables and sustainable stimulus to help our region, Reef and planet recover. It’s the right thing to do.”

Youth engage candidates on climate

TANYA MURPHY

A group of local young people met with candidates for the upcoming election at Yorkey’s Knob Beach last Friday, October 23 to ask them to commit to strong climate action. The Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) members met with Barron River Greens candidate Aaron McDonald, Australian Labor Party (ALP) candidate Craig Crawford, Liberal-National Party (LNP) candidate Linda Cooper and the Cairns Greens candidate Daniel Dench. The AYCC made their demands clear with a beach sign spelling out ‘Clean Recovery’ on Yorkey’s Knob beach, and performed a demonstration of the threatening effects of sea level rise. Barron River LNP Candidate Linda Cooper posted a selfie with the AYCC members but did not agree to match the ALP’s commitment to 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030, through a $500 million investment in publicly-owned renewables such as wind

and solar backed by battery storage.

Ms Cooper told Cairns Local News that one of the LNP’s major contributions to renewables would be pursuing the controversial Bradfield Scheme project, a plan to pump water from Far North Queensland’s rivers up to the top of the Great Dividing Range, before diverting it across the state to eventually end up in Lake Eyre in South Australia. The scheme has been rebutted on scientific, engineering and economic grounds, as it’s estimated it could cost upwards of $15 billion and take more than a decade to construct. The scheme has also been slammed by conservation groups due to the impact it would have on riverways and the Great Barrier Reef. “We’re calling on all the candidates to support a ‘Clean Recovery’ from COVID-19,” said James Cook University (JCU) student Garrett Swearingen, 20. “The candidates attended and we appreciated the seriousness of their responses. However, the LNP and ALP candidates did not demonstrate any willingness to

improve upon their current policies which fall short of the actions required to reduce the effects of the ongoing climate crisis. “The AYCC Cairns group will continue to work with the local community to push for a Clean Recovery and a commitment from all parties to meet our election asks. “First, we are asking for construction of 4 gigawatts of publicly-owned renewables through existing state-owned power generators over the next 3 years. “Second, we are asking for no public money to be spent on fossil fuel projects, especially polluting gas projects and infrastructure, and the state government must not facilitate federal funds for gas.” Fellow JCU student Holly Farnarn, 20, told the candidates she was scared for her future. “There isn’t a single second of each day where I don’t experience ‘climate anxiety,’” she said. “Not only does a changing climate threaten our endemic species and fragile World Heritage ecosystems, it threatens our livelihoods.

Pioneers hand over baton NICOLE GIBSON The innovation hub credited with pioneering the start-up scene in regional Queensland and inspiring countless would be entrepreneurs is set to close its physical space in Cairns. The region’s first startup ecosystem, TheSPACE, announced it will close its co-working premises at TAFE Queensland’s Cairns campus in mid-November, after more than 8 years. Landlords, the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT), advised the business it required its building back as part of a program to revitalise TAFE training facilities. TheSPACE CEO Troy Haines said they investigated the possibility of securing new premises with DESBT however decided it was time to handover the baton to others offering similar arrangements. “There’s a lot of other people supporting entrepreneurs in (a co-working) capacity in Cairns now so we did the sums and decided it really wasn’t necessary anymore,” Mr Haines said. Mr Haines said since 2012 TheSPACE had been home to hundreds of co-working

entrepreneurs and played a pivotal role spring-boarding innovation in the region. The organisation hosted big names in business including Queensland’s Chief Entrepreneurs Mark Sowerby and Steve Baxter of Shark Tank fame. Mr Haines said they were also instrumental in helping James Cook University secure funding for its multimillion dollar Cairns Innovation Centre. “It was at TheSPACE, as the centre of start-up and innovation at the time, the Prime Minister of the day Malcolm Turnbull announced the $10 million-dollar funding commitment,” said Mr

Haines. Mr Haines said while the physical space would close the group would continue to support entrepreneurship under its arms Transformative Technologies and I AM Connected. TheSPACE Mentor and local businessman David Burston said since the announcement the business had been working to relocate the 14 businesses currently working from TheSPACE. “We’ve been out there busy finding homes for most of them,” Mr Burston said. “We’ll keep supporting them afterwards to make sure they’re happy.

CJAG urges major parties there’s still time NICOLE GIBSON The Crime and Justice Action Group’s (CJAG) Convoy for Crime last Saturday failed to secure a commitment from the major parties to action its 12-point Crime Prevention Plan if elected. CJAG, which experienced a meteoric rise to prominence since launching in March 2020, invited politicians vying for office in this weekend’s State election to sign a pledge committing to action their plan to tackle youth crime. CJAG Spokesperson Aaron McLeod said he continued to urge candidates including those from Labor and the LNP to sign the pledge before the election. “The invitation’s out there to all the parties,” Mr McLeod said. “There’s still time and they can sign if they want to.” To date, three Far North

Queensland candidates have signed the pledge including One Nation candidate for Cairns, Darrin Griffith and Independent candidates Yodie Batzke in the seat of Cook and the seat of Hill’s Peter Campion. “This crime prevention plan is calling for policies and resourcing across five priority areas focused on the core responsibility of nurturing, discipline and accountability of children, parents and bureaucrats before they become offenders, and providing a firm deterrent for serious offenders by acknowledging victims of crime,” Mr Griffith said. CJAG is non-profit association formed by residents after a spate of youth crime in the Cairns region earlier this year. CJAG’s Mr McLeod said it worked tirelessly with Townsville counterparts - One Community, One Standard, to bring about common-sense

changes in response to the community’s fears and to project a strong voice that people are fed up with crime in the North. “The more that people come on board and support the initiatives that we’re putting in place the louder our voice will become,” Mr McLeod said. In addition to overwhelming community support, youth rehabilitation pioneer, 93-year-old Geoff Guest AM, lent his voice to the cause to help facilitate a solution. “I’ve been helping people for a long time and am passionate about Australia as a great country and there are problems,” Mr Guest said. “We’re getting more and people in jail and youth and we’re not bad people, there’s something wrong.”

Postage deadlines for record-breaking Christmas NICOLE GIBSON Australia Post is advising locals to send Christmas presents early as the organisation gears up to deliver the largest volume of parcels in its 210-year history. The impact of COVID-19 saw demand for the business’s parcel post service surge as people turned to online shopping in droves. Kirsty McCartney has owned Yorkeys Knob Post Office, with her partner David, for 11 years and said she has never experienced anything like it. “Our parcel man normally has 100-150 deliveries a day and now he is dealing with 300-400 a day minimum,” Ms McCartney said. “It’s been like Christmas every day since March so to

add (actual) Christmas on top of that it’s going to be huge.”

week with this expected to increase.

The organisation announced postage deadlines of December 12 for standard delivery and December 19 for express for those wanting to get gifts to loved ones before Christmas Day.

A nationwide hiring blitz including 1000 jobs in Queensland is also underway to handle the increased demand.

Ms McCartney recommends people start sending gifts now, especially overseas parcels, due to delays caused by the current backlog. “Overseas normally takes two weeks and it’s taking four to six weeks at present,” she said. “Normal mail normally takes two weeks so we recommended going express in Australia.” Australia Post is currently operating their sorting and delivery facilities six days a

Despite the record volumes, Ms McCartney said there were key things people could do to ensure parcels arrived on time. “Have the correct address, include the postcode and unit number and check your online address forms like Ebay,” she said. “A lot of times people’s old address shows up so the parcel gets delivered there.” People wanting more information can contact their local post office or the Australia Post website: auspost. com.au/christmas.

Established in 2005, UMI Arts is the peak Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and cultural organisation for Far North Queensland that provides pathways for emerging artists to become exhibition-ready and opportunities for established artists to expand their skill base and distribution networks. UMI Arts is a membership-based organisation for Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists with a traditional blood-line

connection to the region. In its 15-year history UMI Arts has grown from small beginnings in Martyn Street to Sheridan Street gallery and studio and more recently, a new headquarters and gallery in Jensen Street Manunda. Speaking at Saturday night’s milestone celebration at the Pullman Cairns International, UMI Arts Executive Officer Peter Lenoy said the occasion was particularly special after what has been a challenging year. “The fortitude of our organisation is testament to the way in which we have overcome the difficulties of this year’s pandemic by still man-

aging to launch two exhibitions, including our first ever online gallery that formed part of Cairns Indigenous Art Fair’s 2020 digital program.” “This is exciting as we are now able to take UMI Arts to the communities and help those emerging artists who would otherwise be restricted. “We are about fulfilling our peoples’ potential and building pathways to future success,” Mr Lenoy said. Mr Lenoy thanked UMI Arts Board, staff, artists and funding partners for their contribution that underpinned the celebratory gathering.

Halloween safety tricks to go down a treat HALLOWEEN may look a little different this year, but it’s still important to ensure we are safe and healthy for the most ghoulish night of the year.

“Within two months of us assisting him, his illness was managed and he had reconnected with his daughter that he hadn’t spoken to for nine years and had saved up enough money to send her a present.”

TANYA MURPHY

CHARITY mobile outreach clinic “Wheels of Wellness” (WoW) has helped hundreds of homeless people get their lives back on track since it hit the streets six years ago.

WoW works collaboratively with community services, government organisations and other agencies including Anglicare, Mission Australia and YETI to provide comprehensive and coordinated care.

The fully equipped mobile surgery, staffed by a doctor, nurse, and social worker, visits various locations including the street, shelters and homeless camps to assist people disadvantaged by domestic abuse, homelessness, poverty, mental health problems, and more.

The charity ran on donations and grants for its first two years, until its proven track record led to it securing funding from North Queensland Primary Health Network.

Started by Dr Amanda Robert of Stratford Medical Centre in the back of her own car in 2014, it is the only service of this type in Australia. Chief Operations Officer Bec Coutis said many of their clients lacked the knowledge and confidence to seek treatment for themselves at traditional facilities. “On top of needing medical treatment from our doctors and nurses, many of our clients can’t read or write, don’t have a phone, computer, driver’s license or birth certificate, and lack the skills and confidence to apply for things like Centrelink, housing and jobs,

Fundraising and donations also enabled WoW to purchase a larger van with two consultation rooms, but they hope to expand more to meet demand.

so our social workers can help with that,” said Ms Coutis. “These are simple tasks most of us take for granted, but without assistance, many of the most vulnerable people in society simply cannot get past those barriers.”

Ms Coutis said she had seen many people go from homeless and sick, to healthy, housed and employed after receiving assistance from WoW. “One of our clients has gone from being homeless, to now working in the mines,”

MISTERS ON ESPLANADE Just read my first Cairns Local News. Well done. I’d like to plug getting some misters installed on the Cairns Esplanade. Nothing too over the top – hit a button and walk or jog through a water misted walkway. It would be so lekker to encourage walkers on the esplanade.

PORK BARRELS OF PROMISES

As the Queensland Political Promissory Games (QPPG) draws to a close, we should reflect on the matters that will define our current and future generations here in the far north. It’s not the role of this publication to tell readers how to vote. Our role should be to prick the conscience of readers, to consider what is important and help them filter all the ‘porkbarrels of promises’. Forget the $300 rego promise, it’s today, nothing more, no long term gain, just a promise to shake your hand after voting and hand you 6 crisp $50 notes for your trouble. Not really long term economic development. A super highway with 33 billion dollar price tag, requiring successive governments of any political persuasion to continue with the project. Is that realistic? Are there better alternatives? Kids running out of control, we need to lock them up, or put them in the army for 2 years, teach them a trade like being a mechanic or a ‘sniper’. The sniper trade was the idea of a pre-poll worker connected with a particular political party. Separating families will never solve some of these issues. Should we be working with families and communities to finda wider and lasting solution? So the silly season is almost over. From where I sit I feel there only three true issues here in the north that we should be dealing with now, with the view to building a strong society and economy for the future generations. 1/ The University Hospital. This will change the health outcomes and care for hundreds of thousands North Queenslanders. Improving the quality and access to world standard health care and ultimately change this generation and future generations’ lives. 2/ Diversification of the economy in our region. COVID has hit us hard. Our economy is centred around tourism and farming. Business diversity is needed. The pillars supporting our economy are not strong, and with potentially a looming cyclone season, we need more than tourism to drive our economic future. 3/ The environment. We live in a region surrounded by beauty. A region attracting millions to visit the reef or the rain forests. Are we doing enough to protect these assets and ensure that in years, millions more will want to come and visit? So this weekend, if we still need to vote, as we walk through the throng of eager volunteers, all thrusting their How to Vote Cards in our direction, reflect upon this generation and the future generations and make a mark for the future.

ANDY, Manunda BATS To David at Brinsmead. Are you serious? Comments like yours reveal more about you and the colour of your neck than you perhaps realise.

NIGHT MARKETS Night market businesses took a big hit when COVID restrictions forced its closure for months. Many businesses folded and those that survived have now been impacted by the ill-timed Council Dining Precinct project. The Esplanade entrance is all but closed off and as a result Market trade has dropped dramatically. Cairns locals, please support the Night Market. IT IS OPEN. Abbott St entrance is the easiest. FEEDBACK Congratulations on an interesting local paper. I read it cover to cover. Well done everyone. Keep up the good work.

How about covering the Pride. We want to read whats happening with our boys. After a year off the boys will be ready to take on all comers and win in 2021

ks for publishing my sensible letter. We need a paper that covers local issues with honesty and integrity. I have a local story about our lack of a footpath. Rob Pyne was out here today lending support. The Council have their own agenda and will not help us in Earl St with a few metres of footpath. HUMPHREY H. Westcourt

Are we going to get a new footy ground here in Cairns? Barlow Park is ok but we need a stadium. What about it Bob? ROBERT, Gordonvale 1080 Why not add a little reality and help stop the Councils using the filthy 1080 on the Tablelands before the terrible painful deaths of the animals up there. Independence in the media. How refreshing is it to see another independent publisher open in Australia. For too long the newspaper and electronic media have been dominated by a few families and companies. We need a variety of opinions when it come to media and news. Having media dominated by a few is not healthy and creates long-term problems for us as a society. Australia is a diverse country, with a rich and varied cultural heritage. Our media should also reflect variety. Well done Cairns Local News, loving your fresh approach and your very polished publication. You are the breath of fresh air needed in Cairns. A.B. Cairns

I agree with your editorial regarding the folly in promising 4 lanes from Brisbane to Cairns. The most recent esitmate is 33 Billion dollars, and a project taking 20+ years to complete. So what happens if the next government decides to commence the project and 4 years later they lose office. Will successive government be committed to the project? We need real solotion not pipe dream. I like your idea of a transport logistics hub. Lets use the infrastructure already in polace and take trucks off the raod for long haul. The coosts will be less and the improvements in freight times and environmental savings will deliver a better life for all of us. Mick T Cairns

Vote for real policy, policy that delivers today and delivers in the future. Policy that improves our economic structure and policy that will build a Cairns and the Far North that generations to come will still want to visit, live and invest in. Peter McCullagh Editor.

Okay Ronald, hold onto your red-wig, here is the secret to my world-wide success in burgers (Scobbie-doo drool on). First is the base, which

is toasting the bun inside only, then the sauces from the fridge BBQ, tomato, and sweet chilli. Lovingly place grilled onion and red capsicum, a thick juicy beef patty, cheese, crispy bacon, tomato, cracked pepper, beetroot, iceberg lettuce, mayo then the toasted top bun. Do not forget something to clean up the dribbled sauces after the gourmet Aussie meal. Yep, an icy cold beverage will do. So here is where the squabbles start – 3 sauces are for the sweet taste, no bloody paper thin pattythe thicker the better and of course we are Aussie’s not Yanks so we must have the good old beetroot.

Highway to success for budding engineers

TANYA MURPHY The Smithfield Bypass project has hosted work experience students from nearby Smithfield State High School under a unique partnership between the contractor and a training organisation. Transport and Main Roads Director-General Neil Scales said the experience was organised by Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ), through its Gateway program, in conjunction with Smithfield State High School’s Department of Vocational Pathways and the project contractor, Highway Construction and Albem Operations joint venture (HAJV). “Year 12 students - Mohit Palarwal, Rochelle John Kelly and Fatima Karimi – spent a week on the project, which is delivering a new 3.8 kilometre-long road between McGregor Road and the Cairns Western Arterial Road and Captain Cook Highway intersection,” Mr Scales said. “The students have applied to continue their education at university in engineering and environmental science.”

Thanks from the police

Police would like to sincerely thank an unknown couple who assisted a Cairns Dog Squad officer with an arrest on Saturday night (October 24). At around 7.30pm, a single officer Dog Squad patrol was detailed to attend a report of a suspicious commodore sedan located in the carpark of a local liquor store. On arrival the officer located the sedan which was allegedly stolen from Cairns North on October 15. The officer then located the male driver at the rear of the store, allegedly in possession of the car keys. When told he was under arrest, the man resisted and fought with the officer. During the struggle, a car pulled up and a couple, believed to be aged in their mid 20’s, exited their car and came to the aid of the officer. With their assistance the man was arrested and handcuffed prior to the arrival of additional police. The 27-year-old Kewarra Beach man was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving, possession of dangerous drugs, failing to appear in court and two counts of breaching bail. Police would love the opportunity to thank the couple personally and urge them to contact the Cairns District Crime Prevention office by emailing DCPCCairns@ police.qld.gov.au.

Field Days Filling Fast BUSINESSES from across the North are jumping at the chance to showcase their services and connect with tens of thousands of people at the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days.

Site sales for Northern Australia’s largest agricultural Field Day are open online and are selling fast. Jump online now and book your site. The biennial event is a joint initiative between the Rotary Clubs of Atherton and Mareeba and will be held on May 26, 27 and 28, 2021 at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds. Rotary FNQ Field Days chairman Trevor Duncan said the event provided a prime opportunity for businesses to showcase and connect with their customers. “Anyone in Cairns that’s got customers on the Tablelands probably don’t realise the size and magnitude of the event,” he said. “There’s 22,000 people that come in the gates over the three days, there’s customers coming from all over and they’re all quality buyers. “One of the reasons we keep selling out and one of the reasons why we keep

being successful is because the owners of the businesses come. “This event attracts a very high standard of buyers.” Mr Duncan said the committee was hard at work planning to ensure next year’s event met the expectations of site exhibitors, patrons and visitors. “Crowd favourites will be back at the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days, including the mighty tractor pull, emergency services mock rescues, health and wellbeing pavilion, family and kids area, new release machinery and agriculture technology and innovation, and much more,” he said. A COVID-Safe plan is in place for the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days and the organising committee have put together a range of comprehensive guidelines. Strategic partners for the 2021 Rotary FNQ Field Days is are NQ Agricultural Services and Tyrepower Mareeba. To book a site or for more details about the event, visit fnqfielddays.org.au

Starting a small business DR RAY HAMEY Many people assume that when you have your own business you will make a lot of money. Generally in small business, you will need to work a lot harder than if you were an employee. Let us have a look at a general scenario. You start with an idea and you think it will work and provide you with the livelihood. First of all, the idea needs a lot of fine tuning. Let us say that this idea of yours is something that is within your scope of expertise. This is a very good start because going outside your area of expertise, is fraught with danger.

Ben’s running mo-tivation TANYA MURPHY Local athlete Ben Anderson will run 465 kilometres in 30 days to raise money for Men’s health during the month of November. Last year he created the ‘Run 30 for Movember’ challenge where he ran one kilometre on November 1, five kilometres on November 5, and so on each day until the final run of 30 kilometres on November 30. That’s a gruelling total of 465 kilometres back to back with no rest days, or equivalent to 11 marathons! This year, he has three team mates on board to complete the challenge with him in the hope of and smashing last year’s fundraising achievement of $3200.

All proceeds will go to Movember’s work in improving men’s health – particularly mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Mr Anderson, a technician at Telstra store, said after personal experiences, mental health was a cause close to his heart. “Movember has provided support for me with some mental health concerns I’ve had over the years and I think it’s something that deserves a lot more awareness,” he said. “As a father of two teenage sons, I want them to be able to be open about their feelings, express their emotions and not be afraid to speak out and talk to somebody. “After years of suffering from self-doubt I had to push

plan! You may think this is unnecessary but experience tells us otherwise. A business plan will make you think through the entire operation. The business plan comprises the idea and concept which is expanded into a detailed system of operation in how the business will actually work. The business plan also comprises the estimated cash flow which is the money coming in and how it is going to be spent. You may do up a wonderful business plan, but you need to have working capital behind you, either through savings or borrowings. Generally speaking, the banks and other lending in-

stitutions will not lend without real estate security to a new business that has not been operating for at least two years and has shown good figures. The banks are not stupid and they have learnt often from experience that small businesses fail, often through lack of financial backing and careful management. They have also learned that many a great idea is wasted because people have not thought through the consequences of that cash flow or lack of. myself further than I have ever done before, and running 465 kms in 30 days last year proved that I could do just that. “The feeling when I finished was amazing and plenty of happy tears were flowing. “This year I will be starting in Cairns and finishing in Taupo New Zealand and making it a truly global event.” Anyone who loves running is invited to join in and run sections of the challenge to help raise funds. To donate or to get involved, go to au.movember. com/mospace/network/Run30forMovember You can also follow Ben’s progress by searching for his page, Run 30 for Movember, on Facebook.

Best Price Gold Buyers are set to ‘Buy the Town’

BETWEEN November 2 and 7, published author and valuer, Richard Macdonald, Director of The Unique Jewellery Co, Best Price Gold Buyers and acclaimed writer of ‘Selling Collectables Made Easy’, and his team will be bringing over $1,000,000 of exquisite antique and estate jewellery and collectables to tempt buyers and inform sellers at Cairns Central. Additionally, Richard has kindly offered to extend his broad knowledge to the people of Cairns and give free market appraisals of jewellery all things gold and silver, watches, all coins and banknotes, stamps, medals, and military items. Richard’s main reason for coming to Cairns, however, is to replenish his stock and the very items he is happy to appraise for you are the very same he is happy and hoping to buy from you. As the largest buyer and seller of estate gold and silver jewellery in Australia, he needs to buy to replace gold jewellery at the same rate it is sold. He reports that, due to a very busy Christmas selling season at both antique fairs and other shopping centres, his reserve stocks are almost wiped out and he is in desperate need of all gold jewellery. He is especially after gold chains, both heavy and light, both in good resalable conditional and, or broken. Recycling is close to Richard’s heart and all items sold to him, broken or not, are lovingly restored, at his jewellery repair shop and then reap-

pear ‘born anew’, looking for a new loving owner. To this end, his shop has a seemingly insatiable appetite for broken gold in all colours, including yellow and white gold. “There is not a single piece of gold we refuse to buy, including old gold nuggets, old wedding and dress rings, single earrings, broken chains, and yes, yucky but true, even old gold teeth and fillings. And we are paying top dollar to get it.” Don’t forget to bring your coins, banknotes and stamp collections into Richard and his team as well. They buy all of these in any condition and have buyers waiting for your collections and even for your small tins of coins. “A very old lady brought in a medium size tin of coins, found after her husband died,” Richard said. “Among the mix of pennies, pre-decimal silver and common coins, I found a gold half-sovereign. She literally cried when we told her the tin’s value was $400 including the gold. She had no idea it was even there. It was a wonderful moment to be able to help this lovely lady find some undiscovered wealth.” Richard Macdonald and Best Price Gold Buyers will be at Cairns Central November 2 to 7, in a pop-up shop in front of Coles. WNBL SEASON

Friday, October 30, 2020

Cairns Local News

| 25

SEASON LAUNCH

The 2020 Chemist Warehouse WNBL season will be like no other, with North Queensland to host a revised season model featuring 60 games of world-class women’s basketball inside sixweeks from November 11 to December 20. Through the support of the Queensland Government along with Cairns Regional Council, Mackay Regional Council and the City of Townsville, sporting fans and event-goers alike will be able to cheer on Australia’s best established and emerging female basketballers as they contest the 2020 season exclusively out of a North Queensland hub. McDonald’s Mackay Multi-Sports Stadium will host four double-headers. Over the course of the regular season, Townsville will host four standalone games, 12 double-headers culminating with a double-header on Sunday 13 December. With the fixture now confirmed, Cairns Pop-Up Arena will play host to 20 games in all, comprising of eight double-headers and four standalone encounters. First up for Far North Queensland fans will be a double-header on Saturday

21 November involving the Jayco Southside Flyers and Perth Lynx at 6.30pm (local), closely followed by UC Capitals and the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames at 8.30pm (local). All eight teams will feature in at least two games while in the Tropics, with JCU Townsville Fire vs Villawood Properties Bendigo Spirit (5.00pm local) and Adelaide Lightning vs Deakin Melbourne Boomers (7:00pm local) completing proceedings in Cairns on Friday 11 December. Basketball Australia Head of Women in Basketball Lauren Jackson AO said fans are in for a feast of elite basketball when Australia’s longest-running elite women’s sporting league tips off for 2020. “Today marks an important milestone for the 2020 Chemist Warehouse WNBL season with the release of the fixture, which will see 60 games played over 39 days out of a North Queensland hub. “It’s a challenging fixture that will test the depth of each team’s roster as they rotate through Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. “This festival of basketball will provide fans throughout North Queensland and further afield with the opportunity to see some of the best basket-

ballers in the world including former, current and future Olympians. With the league releasing the 2020 fixture, Basketball Australia CEO Jerril Rechter AM explained that it would not have been possible without the enormous sacrifice of many and the support of the Queensland Government. “It’s important to acknowledge the significant sacrifices being made by the players, coaches, officials and club staff to deliver this unique season. Everyone is giving up a lot to ensure the season goes ahead in what is a pivotal period for Australian women’s basketball as we head into the Tokyo Olympics and 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Sydney. For the 2020 season, the league will work to the Queensland Government’s indoor venue capacity rules which require a COVID-safe plan for each event. For game days involving all double-headers, fans will require just the one ticket to watch all the action. Ticketing information will be released later this week when local fans should be poised to act, as demand is expected to be high across all three cities.

A windscreen chip can be costly

A chipped, cracked or damaged windscreen can mean much more than a simple eyesore. Though issues with your windscreen might seem less pressing than a mechanical fault in you car. Damaged Windscreen

Roundabout right of way Right of way at a roundabout. The driver of the blue car is turning right at the roundabout. Which of the following is the correct way to indicate so that the other drivers know what they intend to do? a) No indicating is needed. b) Don’t indicate when entering the roundabout. Before exiting, indicate left.

c) Indicate right while approaching and entering the roundabout. Before exiting, indicate left. d) Indicate right while approaching, entering and exiting the roundabout. The correct answer is ‘C’. When you’re making a right turn you need to approach the roundabout in the right lane (or the lane marked as allowing a right turn), then

signal right as you approach the roundabout and continue to signal right until you’re ready to exit. Signal left before you exit the roundabout. Turn off the signal after you have exited. Remember—you always have to give way to vehicles that are already on the roundabout.

Even minor damage can dramatically effect your windscreen’s structural integrity. This not only makes your windscreen more susceptible to shattering when hit by flying road debris or cracking over time, but can put the lives of you and the occupants of your car at grave risk. Cracked Windscreen Aside from the dangers outlined above, a cracked windscreen can also grossly compromise visibility. Though a windscreen crack might appear small, it can quickly spread and drastical-

ly obstruct your view from the vehicle. Cracks cannot be repaired unfortunately and a windscreen replacement is the only means to deal with them. If you notice a crack, for the safety of you and other road users, it is essential to get it looked at asap by a professional. Chipped Windscreen A windscreen chip is less severe than a crack and can in most cases be repaired. Chips are repaired using resin repair system. In some cases a blemish will be visible in place of the chip, but following a chip repair the structural integrity of the windscreen will be fully restored, making your vehicle safe to drive again. As a rule of thumb, you should always tend to chips large or small as soon as they

appear. Road vibrations and changes in temperature will turn these chips into cracks, making what could have been a repair into a more expensive replacement. It’s important for drivers to be aware of the safety issues associated with a damaged windscreen. Even minor windscreen damage shouldn’t be taken lightly and should be dealt with as soon as it appears. A little issue can quickly snowball, especially at this time of year when your windscreen is exposed to more extreme conditions. Another consideration is the potential effect a damaged windscreen can have on your insurance coverage. If your insurer can establish that you failed to rectify a damaged windscreen in advance of an accident, it may impede your claim.

Weddings set to boom

| 27

A significant increase in destination weddings in the Cairns region is expected over the next few years, as countless Australian couples have had to postpone and re-locate their weddings due to COVID-19.

Mouldy Lovers and Hillbilly Goats take over the Tablelands LISA CHRISTENSEN DID someone say real live music? Last weekend the Tablelands Folk Festival went ahead, one of the only mainstays on the FNQ gig calendar that has survived in this year of cancellation. Apparently the first public event of this size conducted in Australia since the COVID-19 lockdown, a massive congratulations is due to the organisers. There was a lot to contend with to bring this event to a much smaller but very appreciative crowd. Despite the resolute “no dancing” signs, cleaning be-

tween sets and hand sanitiser at every turn, it was a no less friendly affair and the enthusiastic atmosphere was palpable. Performers have clearly been as starved as punters. There is just nothing quite like live, a fact noted by one of Sunshine Coast outfit Gypsy Rumble, “Playing to a screen is just not the same!”. Albeit paired down, the bill sported the usual events spread around the charming venues of Yungaburra, from Poets Breakfast to hotel veranda jams, including Brisbane band The Mouldy Lovers, Cairns acts Robert Cini and Talitha Jae and closing

with the much-loved Hillbilly Goats.

The Woodward family are seizing this opportunity by opening ‘Rainforest Lakes,’ a beautiful new wedding venue at their nature park, Rainforestation, in Kuranda.

In this age of lockdown a few interesting aspects emerge. With borders shut its local and intrastate only, pre-booking is essential and “sold out” is now the norm.

Famous for its wildlife, the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience and Army Duck tours through the rainforest, the park is now also a place where brides and grooms can celebrate their special day.

There is speculation on whether this will irrevocably change the FNQ arts and entertainment scene where audiences are renowned for their relaxed attitude and last-minute attendance.

Set on the edge of lush World Heritage Rainforest, offering picture-perfect setting with a fountain, sweeping palm-dotted hills and a fruit orchard with a dainty rotunda.

“Being long-established in the wedding industry I know there’s a need for new destinations, particularly as this year has brought a whole new set of challenges for weddings, that we hope to help solve.

The move away from reliance on national headliners forces a stronger and welcomed focus on programming and supporting Queensland music.

Rainforest Lakes Events Manager Darlene Woodward said there has already been a lot of interest since launching the brand just a few weeks ago.

“Many brides and grooms have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions and had to postpone their special day, meaning there will be an increase in the volume of wed-

“The social media pages gained a couple of hundred followers overnight followed by several enquiries, which demonstrates that there’s a real need within the market,” she said.

dings in the next few years, so we hope to help the local wedding industry cater to some of the demand,” she said. The CaPTA Group Director of Sales and Marketing Ben Woodward said he looks forward to seeing the family business diversify and branch out to yet another market. “We have always known the natural beauty of Rainforestation would make for a picturesque wedding venue, so we’re excited to be ‘pivoting’ attention and resources to making a completely different set of dreams come true,” he said.

tall through

tough times

WHEN Juan Walker first set up his tour business ‘Walkabout Cultural Adventures’ in Mossman ten years ago, he was warned against it by external business advisors. Ten years and one global pandemic later, his business still going strong, and last year, it was even named the Cultural Tourism Australia winner in the 2019 Adventure Tourism Awards. COVID-19 has slowed business growth, but between his savings and available support, Juan is able to keep business running with his wife, Corinne and one local tour guide, Aaron Port. They operate on-Country tours sharing the histories, cultures and traditional ways of Kuku Yalanji people. Juan’s traditional lands are Eastern Kuku Yalanji Country, extending from south of Port Douglas along the coast, north to the Annan River and he has connection to Erub (Darnley Island) in the Torres Strait through his grandmother on his mother’s side. Previously, Juan worked in national parks through the Community Development Employment Projects and then worked as a cultural tour guide for a Daintree resort for eight years, before deciding to start his own business to share even more local history and traditional culture. “I was told cultural tourism was too much hard work, but I didn’t listen,” Juan said. “It takes time to create trust and reputation in tourism with its established partnerships and loyalties. I worked seven days a week to pay bills, loans and build up my busi-

ness and contacts. “It is good to see more Bama (rainforest Aboriginal people) getting into the tourism industry. It makes me proud when visitors think they know history, but we open their eyes to different things,” he said. Tourism Australia and the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships provided resources to assist Mr Walker with developing his business. Juan is now eyeing domestic opportunities including health and education partnerships. “We re-opened within a week of borders opening, with COVID-safe plans, cleaning and pre-screening protocols in place,” Juan said. “While business is not what we usually expect for this time of year, it is slowly picking up with Brisbane and Gold Coast visitors. “It is important those who have never experienced Far North Queensland’s history and rich culture take the opportunity to learn about this beautiful part of the world and how we connect to culture, land and sea,” he said. Juan also shares culture by teaching weekly traditional language classes to young Queenslanders. “Mossman State School’s Kuku Yalanji Language Program is now in its second year and I try make classes fun to keep the kids engaged,” Juan said.

A MAN, A GUITAR, A VISION

It was in 1985 when Todd Macalpine purchased a one-way bus ticket to Cairns with nothing but a guitar, a backpack and the clothes on his back. Now a leading force of the Cairns music scene and owner of ‘NQ Music Press’, Cairns Local News sat down with Todd to uncover his inspiring journey. AMY MACALPINE “One of my first memories was when I was just three years old. I would pull the pans out of my nana’s kitchen cupboards and play drums on them as loud as I could,” Todd said. It was at this young age, in the suburbs of Sydney, that Todd’s passion for music first emerged. As a young teen he would spend hours each day listening to his favourite albums over and over again, inspired by 70s rock legends such as Kiss, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. It was with these albums and a few tattered, old tablature books, that Todd taught himself how to play the guitar. A decision that would shape his future. After hearing epic tales about the music scene in Far North Queensland, Todd decided to embark on a journey to Cairns when he was just 18 years old. At first he made a living by busking the streets but eventually earned a name for himself, playing for wellknown bands such as the ‘Blue Heelers’ and ‘Crawling King Snake’. Todd immersed himself in the local music scene but

soon realised that original artists, like himself, just weren’t getting the recognition they deserved. “I caught myself in one of those moments where you almost step outside yourself. I realised that there was nothing up here for artists that wanted to play original music.” It was from this revelation that ‘Pandamonium Records’ was born. For the next few years, Todd spent his time recording original songs by local artists and held a big concert each year to showcase their music. “It was a big day of the year. It brought everyone together and consolidated the whole scene. Most people you ask would remember that as the golden period of original music,” he said. During this time, Todd was also writing articles and CD reviews for ‘Barfly’, a local arts and entertainment magazine. However, the magazine sadly published its last edition in 2005, leaving the Cairns music scene with no media coverage. It was a few years later that Todd had what he described as a “eureka moment”. One that would pave

the way for local music. Todd set out to create ‘NQ Music Press’, an online platform to give local musicians a voice. He wanted people to be able to access the website anytime, anywhere. “From the get go it had to be in a format that would look good on phones and almost work like an app, which it does.” ‘NQ Music Press’ originally started out as an archive featuring a compilation of posters, photos and recordings that Todd and fellow musician Patric Yung had collected from the Cairns music scene over the years. However, through time it evolved into the popular news outlet it is today. “I think what Todd has done is amazing. It’s an absolute connecting point for Cairns,” said Yung. These days, Todd enjoys pursuing music from the comfort of his home studio in the sleepy, country town of Gordonvale. Whether he’s strumming on his guitar, rehearsing with his band the ‘Brazilians’ or publishing stories for ‘NQ Music Press’, Todd’s passion for music burns as bright as ever.

Back on the tools and back to Cairns MONDAY October 19, Queensland’s blues and roots favourites, Busby Marou are hitting the road again and will wrap up their “Back On The Tools” tour of intimate shows with a return to Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday 12 December 2020. Tickets are now on sale from Ticketlink and the message is “Buy Together to be Together” for the ultimate Busby Marou night out. The duo are no strangers to Cairns or the Tanks, having performed a series of sell out shows, most recently in November 2019. Their Back On The Tools tour kicks off in Mackay on 5 November and zig-zags its way across the state taking in Townsville, Mission Beach, Brisbane, Noosaville and Toowoomba. Capping off a vibrant few months of live entertainment across the city’s key venues, Busby Marou, supported by Leanne Tennant, are destined to give everything they’ve

got with music from their Best Blues and Roots ARIA award nominated album, The Great Divide. For Busby Marou, this week has been one of its biggest yet. Not only have they secured an ARIA award nomination and announcement of a new tour, the country also learned they will headline the entertainment at Queensland’s history making AFL Grand Final at the Gabba this weekend. Since making their music official in 2007, Thomas Busby and Jeremy Marou have been in constant demand, spending most of that time touring until earlier this year when COVID-19 restrictions forced them to stop and take a break. With a reputation as one of Australia’s hardest working live bands best known for their distinctly Australian storytelling and gifted musicianship a key element of their on-stage performance is the intertwining of vocal interplay of two lifelong mates.

TANYA MURPHY CAIRNS Performing Arts Centre will host its first theatre production since before COVID when ‘Prospect Terrace,’ written by Cairns’ award-winning playwright Angela Murphy, premieres at Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) on Friday, November 20. Murphy’s Queensland pride, familial ties and innate sense for comic timing is woven like a rich and colourful thread into her latest work which she describes as “a funny, bitter and quirky take on the dynamics of a dysfunctional family.” Set in a Queenslander in Cairns, Prospect Terrace delves into the lives and loves of a family in which warring

siblings and an ageing patriarch provide the narrative focussed on inheritance, responsibility and how we look after our ageing parents during their time of need. “This is a play that we will all be able to relate to in some way,” she said. “I successfully launched Veranda Theatre Co in July to support the Cairns arts community and have now hosted actors, musicians, comedians and brought audiences together to share that experience (under COVID-safe conditions). “With the support of Arts Queensland and in partnership with Cairns Regional Council and so many generous and supportive people from the Cairns’ creative community, I’m thrilled that

Prospect Terrace will open up the CPAC Studio stage again and welcome audiences to share a new theatre experience.” Directed by Karen Crone, Prospect Terrace assembles an all Cairns stellar cast of actors, featuring Andrea Allumay, Andy Bramble, Liz Christensen and Natalie Taylor. Taking cues from the Queensland vernacular, the set is cleverly designed by award-winning Cairns duo Simona Cosentini and Simone Tesorieri, lighting by the talented Jason Glenwright and sound by famed musician and producer, Nigel Pegrum. Tickets available through Ticketlink.

STAR GUIDE AQUARIUS: You’ll feel at liberty to do almost anything early this week, and amazed at your good fortune. Take advantage of it. The rest of the week will be an odd combination of strange events and intervening periods of quiet boredom. See it as a sign of the changes happening underneath the surface -- soon you’ll see the results, but for now you’re still working them out on a subconscious level. Creative energy will pulse through you this weekend, and if you’re in the right place for it you might spark a romantic affair that will move quickly.

GEMINI: Your dreams will be achingly close to reality early this week. Seek out the advice of trusted friends and you just might bridge the gap. By Wednesday you’ll need to abruptly come back to reality and face up to business-related issues. There’s more going on than meets the eye, and if you ferret it out you’ll end up ahead of the game. Save the weekend for good times. You’ll probably feel like reaching out and communicating with like minds, even if they’re on the other side of the world. You’ll help generate some great new ideas.

LIBRA: Whatever happens early in the week will depend considerably on your mood. If you’re up, you’ll have great times; if you’re down, the whole world will seem to be down there with you. A culture clash might arise on Wednesday or Thursday, but your natural diplomatic skills should help ease the tensions before the weekend kicks in. Intimacy will be important but a little harder to come by than usual on Saturday and Sunday. There might be a few too many social obligations in your date book, so try to lighten your load.

PISCES: Monday and Tuesday will be confusing at best; it might seem like you’re stuck in a puzzle book with no way to check the answers in the back. The feeling will pass soon enough. You can turn those emotions into healthy creativity for the rest of the week, as you’ll be in touch with your artistic side and able to express yourself by just about any means, from painting to cooking a great meal. Take it easy over the weekend and try to take care not to commit yourself to anything you can’t get out of.

CANCER: You’ll be in such a rush early this week that you might forget your priorities. Try not to blow up at the smallest interruption or provocation -- in fact, it’s best if you just slow down until at least Wednesday. By then you’ll be feeling more like staying in, but you might also get a few crazy notions about rearranging or redecorating, so it’s a perfect time to work on the home front. If you’re ready to entertain guests on Friday, they’ll be utterly charmed. The weekend might feel overwhelming with all its social demands, but you’ll want to come out of your shell and enjoy the good times.

SCORPIO: On Monday, you’ll learn that no good deed goes unnoticed when a seeming act of Samaritanism goes awry. It will be something to laugh about later, but at the time it will feel ugly. Intense feelings arise later in the week, but the only solution will be compromise. It will feel more difficult than it really is, and the sense of relief when it’s over will be palpable. Business or legal difficulties could arise over the weekend but can be delayed or prevented if you take the time to read every word of fine print.

ARIES: Early in the week, you’ll be seized by a powerful impulse to go exploring. The farther out you go from your current situation, the better you’ll feel. By Wednesday you’ll want to slow down quite a bit and take stock of yourself and your possessions. It could be a good time to purge your house of things you don’t need or want anymore. Take your time with it. The weekend will move by quickly, but you’ll pick up a few new ideas that will help you move forward next week.

LEO: Someone new will storm into your life early this week and set events in motion that will ultimately change the way you think about something dear to you. Later in the week, expect a showdown with an authority figure, most likely at school or work, with unreasonable expectations taking center stage. Stick to your guns and try to finish up what’s already on your plate. Socializing is on this weekend’s agenda. It’s a great time for group intellectual exercises, like attending public lectures or holding a reading group meeting.

TAURUS: The whole world will seem to be moving faster than you and pushing you harder than you like early this week. Try to go at your own pace and don’t let yourself be rushed into making big purchases. The second half of the week will be much more your style, filled with good friends and family relations. Entertainment should be on your agenda. You might feel a little reckless and free-spirited over the weekend -- make sure you have someone with you to keep from signing your life away.

VIRGO: Monday brings a new sense of vigor and drive to your daily activities, but it might also engender some hostilities between you and those you perceive as obstacles. The latter half of the week is great for travel, philosophizing, therapy and all other methods of expanding your horizons. Whatever you do, dig deeply and try to really get a feel for your situation. Work might become a problem over the weekend, even if you’re not scheduled. Communication difficulties could result in bad feelings, so take care when speaking and writing.

SAGITTARIUS: On Monday and Tuesday, you’ll be living the good life. If you’re looking for romance (or even if you’re not), it’ll find you. You might be too caught up in the good times to even notice, though. Later in the week you’ll need to get serious about figuring out the details of your latest plans to help friends or the community. You can get it all done quickly if you discipline yourself. The weekend might feel overwhelming with all the activities going on, but as long as you treat everyone equally and fairly you’ll get by just fine. CAPRICORN: Stay firmly resolved early this week -- your concerns about safety or security are warranted and you’ll soon find that the opposition melts away. Your romantic side will come out in full force this week, and by Wednesday or Thursday you’ll be wanting to take long walks with someone special. You don’t have to spend a bundle on fancy dinners or hotels, and you’ll want to keep it simple anyway. Your mind will be extra-sharp during the weekend, but you’ll be surrounded by scatterbrains who can’t keep up with your focus.

Pace and size the key to Pride engine room PETER MCCULLAGH

bench,” he said.

in a leadership capacity.

THE Northern Pride this week re-signed four key players as they plan for the 2021 season.

“Brad Lupi is another big body at 125 kilos. He adds another aspect off the bench, we need that depth and experience moving forward.”

“Rod served as vice captain this year and he’s a winner. He played in the 2010 Grand Final.

The club has announced Lata Fakalelu, Brad Lupi, Terrence Casey-Douglas and Rod Griffin will be returning to the Pride for the coming season. Pride Coach Ty Williams said the four forwards, alongside the recently resigned Nick Lui-Toso, would bring much-needed pace and size to the club. “Adding depth to our engine room. Lata weighs in at 121 kilos and one of the quickest in our club and across the ground, will play an important role off the

Williams is quietly confident and excited as the roster is starting to take shape as his roster and reflects the player structure capable of winning the competition. “I’m assembling a squad that’s not going to make the five, but can win the competition,” he said. “These four guys are key elements of that moving forward. Rod Griffin brings a wealth of experience to the team and will serve strongly

| 37

“What Rod brings to us is what’s going to be very important to us in the coming season, getting the young guys through. Williams believes his squad reflects the current NRL trend of fast moving big bodies. With four spots left in Williams’ roster without the Cowboys’ allocation the club is still yet to go to market for a couple of key signings. “Perhaps one more big guy for through the middle, plus another depth half would help us out.”

NRL Volunteers Recognised The National Rugby League (NRL) this week announced the Lithgow Bears Rugby League Football Club as the game’s Grassroots Club of the Year and Joseph Chidiac Volunteer of the Year in the Kayo NRL Community Awards 2020. This week’s announcement honours the very best people in rugby league, the game’s unsung heroes who have given up their own time to grow the game, assist the community and create assistance for communities in need.

Mossman Golf’s future is secure LOCAL golfers can continue to swing their clubs around the Mossman Golf Course with a crop of keen players hitting the sweet spot under a new lease arrangement.

Douglas Shire Council resolved to buy the golf course land and facilities from Douglas Shire Community and Sports Club Inc, with the new lease giving local golfers a firm grip on the future of the site. The newly-formed Mossman Golf Club Incorporated will operate the golf course and club house with support from the Mossman Memorial Bowls Club. Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the outcome was a fantastic result for the community. “The Mossman Golf Club

is such an important part of the community – run by the community – and it needs to stay that way,” he said

“Ratepayers have got a deal that is well under par and secured an asset for the newly formed Mossman Golf Club Inc to grow into the future.” Mossman Golf Club Incorporated President, Geoff Goodwin, said the outcome was a win-win for the community. “We have big plans to grow our junior sports participation and take a lead in sports tourism by attracting players from outside the region to this magnificent course,” he said. “I can really see it thriving and developing into a club that our community can be proud of.”

The 18-hole golf course, which is open seven days per week, includes a 1.42-hectare freehold block of land and has a clubhouse with a licensed bar and dining area, commercial kitchen, golf pro shop, male and female change rooms and toilet facilities. The lease was previously offered to Mossman Memorial Bowls Club, however the club believes it would be more appropriate for golfers to operate the course. “We are very grateful to the Douglas Shire Community & Sports Club Inc that has provided unwavering support in the planning and transition arrangements so there are no disruptions for club members, staff and the community,” Mr Goodwin said. “Thanks to Kym Rowley,

the board, Kevin Rynne, the Bowls Club board and Douglas Shire Council, particularly Mr Terry Farrelly and his team, for ensuring the Mossman Golf Club continues to stay as a community asset in the Shire.” Douglas Shire Community & Sports Club Incorporated General Manager, Kim Rowley, said the golf course would be in good hands. “It is especially great to see the golfers take control and they will make it work,” he said. “I would like to thank everyone involved including Council, the Mossman Golf Club and Mossman Bowls. “We will continue to do what we can to support these clubs into the future.”

Grassroots Club of the Year, the Lithgow Bears, became one of the saviours of the region during the summer bushfire crisis, donating their dressing rooms for the use of showers for those who lost homes. Their grounds became makeshift refuge areas for residents, pets and wildlife as fires destroyed the region. Bears participants also helped fight fires and rebuild the community after the bushfires were extinguished. Despite the bushfires and COVID-19 the club registered 50 male and female teams in the Midwest Cup Competitions. The Grassroots Club of the Year was proudly sponsored by “Your local club”. Mr Chidiac, volunteer of the year winner, is a board member of Wheelchair Rugby League, has devoted 25 years to the game, in particular creating and growing Wheelchair Rugby League competitions. He was a driving force in establishing Wheelchair Rugby League competitions initially in NSW followed by Queensland and now the Northern Territory. NRL Chief Executive Andrew Abdo said the Kayo

Community Awards 2020 highlighted the very best in our game. “We read about our heroes on the field in the Telstra Premiership, but these awards acknowledge our unsung heroes - the people and clubs that make a difference not only to rugby league but to our communities in general,’’ he said. Mr Abdo said Mr Chidiac’s commitment to growing Wheelchair Rugby League had enhanced the lives of people with disabilities across three states. “Joseph is an inspiration. He has created opportunities and changed lives for so many people. Without his efforts Wheelchair Rugby League wouldn’t be where it is today. He is a trailblazer in our game and is a shining example of what you can achieve with remarkable dedication, care and compassion,’’ he said. IN a 200 metre butterfly race, perhaps the most important 15 centimetres of the race is actually the space between a swimmers’ ears. Cairns swimmer Ike Martinez is a firm believer in the power of the mind and the mental preparation required to take his performances to a national level.

EDGE HILL MEMORIAL BOWLS CLUB MEN’S Pennant Bowls: Having already won the Division One Pennant to qualify for a crack at the State 2020 Pennant in Cleveland Club in Brisbane on November 7 & 8, 2020. Edge Hill proved it’s overall strength on Saturday October 24 with both Edge Hill 2nd Division teams qualifying for the Finals this weekend. A win against Brothers Edmonton 54-25 in Section 1 with Section 2 winning 7020 against Innisfail / Babinda. Saturday October 31, will see Edge Hill (1) play Edge Hill (2) at Brothers Edmonton (Fuller Sports Venue). Club members able to support your club should attend. Teams in Section One are D. Curry B. Moseley, J. Straatsma & B. Sloper with team 2 G. Royle, N. Beitzel, G. Medhurst & John Hayes. Section Two team 1 is P. Ryan, J. Parker, R. Wilson, H. Mitchell. Team 2 is P. Whitehead, C. Whyte, K. Mitchell, M. Smith. Finals will begin at 9:00am Saturday October 31, with Section 1 and 2 playing each other.

The loser will play Section 3 team Gordonvale/Cairns at 1:00pm. Final game will be played on Sunday November 1, with the winner of 1 /2 game playing Section 3. To play social bowls at Edge Hill put your name on the lists available for a game and have a chance to win a Jackpot Tuesday $620+ and Saturday $1000.

Ike initially broke the 2002 long standing National record in March this year and then again (rebroke it) at the recent Long Course Swimming meet in October . In ‘total’ shaving off 2.5 from the mark .. and almost 5 seconds from his personal best time.. The new record 2:06:71 was recently recognised and approved by Swimming Australia and qualifies Ike for his first National Championships and Olympic Trials in mid2021.

swimming for many years, his entry into competitive swimming is fairly recent. Previously a competitive gymnast and competing at state championships, Ike moved to competitive swimming 3 years ago. “Gymnastics helped me with my upper body strength and flexibility,” said Ike.

“Swimming excites and challenges me. It’s the battle with yourself to improve mentally and physically. Eighteen months ago Ike changed clubs to join with TAS Swim Club’s Coach Duncan Todd. “My coach Duncan, understand me and my swimming, he’s taught me so much more about swimming and the mental preparation required for train-

ing as well as competing.

“He gets my competitive nature and works to help me develop it and make it a positive thing for me” The next year could serve as a defining one for Ike. In December 2020 he will contest the Queensland Swim Championships, before competing in the Australian Swimming Championships as well as Australian Olympic Trials. “I’m excited about competing against Australia’s best swimmers, but it would be pretty awesome competing for Australia, I’m nervous but it will be really good experience for me.” The next record potentially under threat from this developing swimmer is long

standing Under 14 200 metre Butter Fly record set in 1997 by Australian swimming legend Ian Thorpe.

Whilst Ike’s current PB is still 4 seconds off the Thorpe’s Australian 14 Year Old record of 2:02:22 this record is seriously under threat as Ike continues to mature and grow as a swimmer as well as refining and developing his race skills. Swim training is scheduled around school, family and music, with eight pool session each week. “I focus on school, music and swimming. I try not to focus upon swimming alone,” he said. The combination of Duncan Todd as coach and Ike Martinez is developing well. Ike’s professional approach to training as well as racing has marked him as a potential Australia swimmer for the future.

Saints facing a big task BRAD SINCLAIR

THIS Saturdays senior AFL Cairns Grand Final between Port Douglas and the Cairns Saints on the surface looks as one sided as you will ever see in any sport. The three times that these two teams have met this year, the results have been in Port Douglas’ favour by the tune of 82, 126 & 96 points. That’s an average of 101 points and unfortunately only a minor miracle will reverse the result in tomorrow’s biggest game of the year. The Saints have been magnificent all year and first year coach Wes Glass has been fantastic, but this is a very big task. A task made

even greater after losing his captain and major playmaker Cade Wellington after a two week suspension was handed down during the week for an incident in the first quarter last week against South Cairns.

arguably the best side seen in Cairns for the past 10 to 20 years.

On top of that Chris Novy has reinjured an abdomen complaint that he received in Round 3 and won’t play either. Then there is the experienced Jesse Travaglini who looked like he injured his left hamstring in the third quarter last week.

The Saints have some other very good players in 2020 Crathern Medallist Josh Matulis, Zeb Paulger, Rhys Bridge, Travis Tedmanson, Tom Messenger and Oakley Wallace but there is an incredible amount of Croc players that they simply need to stop.

He is predicted to take his place in the side, but hamstrings are a very risky injury to go into any game let alone a Grand Final against

Brad Cooper, looking at a fifth premiership in a row, won’t be a coach that is ever going to take this game lightly.

He was the Saints best player in the preliminary final and Glass will be very hopeful that he does get up in time.

With the benefit of having last weekend off he put his players through a rigorous three hour session at 8am at Cazalys and they looked cherry ripe for this weekends game.

With a midfield that has ten players going through there at any stage Coopers ability to rotate his players and keep them fresh is a strategy he will no doubt use with the Saints class players out of the team. Players like Jackson McDonald, Tyson Milne, Jesse Mawson, Daniel Moore, Josh Mawson, Jai Florent and others giving Ben Johnson, Kye Chapple, Adam Gross, Isaac Baker & Sam Giblett a never ending supply this could be

a headache that turns into a migraine very quickly. Grand Finals have a habit of dishing up something out of the ordinary and the Saints will be having sleepless nights this week thinking about what that out of the ordinary is going to be. With nothing to lose and all expectations and pressure on the Port Douglas side, Glass is actually in a position where he can try anything and as crazy as it may seem at the time, whatever he comes up with is better than going in predictable. Because the Crocs have been able to smash that predictablity in their past three encounters.

Maybe, just maybe the end result may not be normal. Whatever the result, both Brad Cooper and Port Douglas and Wes Glass and the Cairns Saints have been terrific.
