WELCOME MESSAGE Great Barrier Reef Masters Games
Message from the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Innovation and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics and Paralympics Sport and Engagement
Welcome to the 2023 Great Barrier Masters Games, a highlight on the It’s Live in Queensland events calendar and a wonderful opportunity to showcase Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef as a tourism destination.
The Cairns community is grateful to welcome visitors who fill their cafes and restaurants, stay in their accommodation, use local transport and explore our unique tourism experiences. That’s why we support events through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program because they bring a welcomed boost to the local community and supports local jobs. Events like the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games allows friends and family to reconnect and creates community pride. We hope you enjoy your stay and return again in the near future.
Be sure to immerse yourself in the local culture and get the opportunity to explore some of our worldclass tourism experiences in this beautiful region. Congratulations to the event organisers and volunteers – we wish you all the best for a successful event.
Welcome from the Mayor
On behalf of our city and region let me extend a very warm Cairns welcome to all returning athletes and supporters, new faces and of course locals who have embraced the Masters Games as their own.
Our team behind the Games have worked tirelessly since the last competition to deliver a fantastic sport and social program that will not disappoint. This year’s Games we welcome athletes from not only across Queensland, but every Australian state and territory, as well as overseas competitors from New Zealand, USA, Singapore, India, Papua New Guinea, and the Pacific Islands
We are excited to showcase 18 sports, including the introduction of Rugby 7s and the return of lawn bowls. The beauty of any Masters Games is the combination of healthy competition with fun and friendships. A nightly social program complements the daily sporting schedule, providing an outlet for participants to socialise and experience local destinations and hospitality.
This year we welcome our 2023 Great Barrier Reef Masters Games ambassadors, swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Liesel Jones OAM, and NQ Cowboys and Queensland Origin legend Matt Bowen. Those attending the Sportsperson’s Dinner will get the chance to hear from the ambassadors, as well as Cairns Olympic softballer and Australian Hall of Fame inductee Joyce Lester. I encourage you to take the time to explore all our city and region has to offer in between competition. Whether it’s the iconic reef, rainforest, restaurants, galleries, or picturesque walking trials – there is something for everyone. On behalf of the people of Cairns enjoy our region, catch-up with old friends, and have a great four days of competition.
Cr Bob Manning Mayor, Cairns Regional Council The Hon. Stirling Hinchliffe MP Minister for Tourism, Sport and Innovation and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics and Paralympics Sport and EngagementGAMES AMBASSADORS
Great Barrier Reef Masters Games
Liesel Jones OAM and Matthew Bowen
Rub shoulders with Australian sporting royalty at this year’s Great Barrier Reef Masters Games.
Our official Games ambassador is Australian Olympic gold medallist Leisel Jones, OAM. Regarded as one of the world’s greatest ever female swimmers, winning seven World Championships titles, nine Olympic medals, 10 Commonwealth Games gold medals, 14 individual world records and 23 national titles. Since retiring Leisel has continued to score goals, releasing a memoir, participating in several reality TV programs, studying at university and co-hosting a radio drive program for Triple M in Brisbane. As a proud Queenslander, Liesel is excited to represent the Games, meet the competitors and join in the comradery.
Supporting Leisel this year we have former NQ Cowboys superstar Matthew Bowen as our Nth Qld Games ambassador. A proud Indigenous man of the Guugu Yimithirr people in Far North Queensland, Matt is known as a rugby league legend across Queensland. Since retirement, Bowen now travels to some of North Queensland’s most remote Indigenous communities each week to deliver messages of positivity and help close the gap in both health and education. Matt is also excited to be coming to his former home town to support the competitors and join in on the action of the Great Barrier Masters Games.
