To Whom it May Concern
Regional Queensland Legislative Assembly – Cairns Regional Council Advocacy Priorities
I write to express my support for Cairns Regional Council’s Advocacy initiatives which offer a great opportunity for some consideration ahead the regional sitting of Queensland Parliament 9 to 11 May in Cairns
As the Local Member for Barron River, on behalf of the Cairns community I have worked with Council in refining their advocacy initiatives, which were also developed with input from industry and advocacy partners.
A total of seven advocacy priorities are being actioned by Council on behalf of the Cairns community, with Queensland Government commitments sought in the lead up to, or during, the parliamentary sitting in Cairns:
1) Trinity Beach Community Activity Space
2) Cairns Community and Multicultural Centre
3) Kenrick Park Masterplan Implementation – Stage 1
4) Northern Beaches Leisure Trail – Next Stages
5) Cairns Region Defence Industry Strategy (in partnership with Advance Cairns)
6) Destination Cairns – Mountain Bike Tourism and Events (in partnership with TTNQ)
7) Cairns Skills and Workforce Planning (supported by Council and led by the Cairns Regional Jobs Committee)
Cairns is a community with a diverse population of 169,312 and draws residents from 102 countries. With 27% of the population born overseas, the number of international arrivals has doubled over the past 15 years, meaning the city has a thriving arts and culture scene in addition to acting as the key service hub for Far North Queensland.
The seven advocacy priorities outlined in this letter will deliver wide ranging benefits to the community of Cairns and the broader region. Accordingly, I support Council’s requests for Queensland Government investment to deliver these initiatives and look forward to working collaboratively with Council (and others) on their successful implementation.
I am a strong supporter of locally led initiatives and opportunities for the Queensland Government to co-invest in. Whilst fiscal challenges may limit the above commitment requests being immediately approved for funding, this list suitably provides Government with a short term ‘shovel ready’ plan for progression in the Cairns community over the forward estimates.
