The Project

The Youth Urban Art Project - Pride of Place - illustrates stories of the Cairns suburbs through the eyes of the young people who live there. Inspiration for the murals came from many different sources. Children and young people drew on the recent history of their suburbs, activities, objects and animals in their environment, their experiences and loves, and mixed it in with colour and imagination to create murals that tell their own stories about their own places. The Youth Urban Art project brought together experienced local street artists, emerging artists and young people, aged under 25. Together, they developed concepts and co-designed large-scale murals in 10 suburbs: Babinda, Gordonvale, Edmonton, Woree, Earlville, Manoora, Redlynch, Machans Beach, Yorkeys Knob and Trinity Beach. The resulting murals reflect the diverse cultures and interesting features of the different areas. Cairns Regional Council celebrates Pride of Place with this collection of art and images as a way of saying ‘thank you’ to our partners and all participants.
