Patricia Piccinini’s exhibition Life Clings Closest has attracted record crowds at the Gallery. Audiences have been particularly drawn to the new works that Patricia has created that are based on a research residency in Cairns where she met with leading scientists to investigate evolutionary theories and hybrid life and plant forms relating to the unique conditions of the tropics. The resulting works encourage critical global dialogue around the relationship between humans and nature and support the Gallery’s aim to examine the specificities of the local while sharing our stories globally. In 2020 the Gallery celebrates its 25th birthday and we have an exciting program of exhibitions and events planned for the year. In March we will be presenting the iconic Ned Kelly series of paintings by Sidney Nolan, and later in the

year we are thrilled to be the only venue in Australia, outside New South Wales, to present the prestigious 2020 Archibald Prize exhibition. This is the first time that a gallery in Queensland has been invited to host the touring Archibald exhibition, which is a wonderful 25th birthday present for the people of Cairns. As we approach the end of the year, I would like to thank all our members, friends and artists for their support of the Gallery and wish you all a wonderful festive season and new year ahead. This year’s guest judge is Max Delany who will be in Cairns to open the exhibition and to announce artists whose works have been selected for acquisition for the Gallery’s Permanent Collection. JOHN MAWURNDJUL

7 FEB–29 MAR 2020

I AM THE OLD AND THE NEW

John Mawurndjul is not simply Australia’s premier bark painter, he is one of our greatest artists of all time.

John McDonald, Sydney Morning Herald art critic

I am the old and the new is a major touring exhibition organised by the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA). It includes works selected from a retrospective exhibition that spanned forty years of the artist’s creative practice. The exhibition was developed and co– presented by the MCA and Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), in association with Maningrida Arts & Culture. The old ways of doing things have changed into the new ways. The new generation does things differently. But me, I have two ways. I am the old and the new.

John Mawurndjul

IMAGE PAGES 11-12 John MAWURNDJUL The Artist at Work: Dolobbo bim (Bark Painting) (detail), photographic essay by Jenni Carter, first published in Crossing Country: The Alchemy of Western Arnhem Land Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 2004, photograph: Jenni Carter

John Mawurndjul is a masterful painter whose works on bark and wood are experimental, intricate, and exceptionally beautiful. His work has always dealt with important cultural narratives. Ngalyod (the Rainbow Serpent), is an iconic subject matter that has remained a central theme in his work. However, over the last 20 years he has concentrated on more abstract works associated with the Mardayin ceremony, a now rarely performed sacred ceremony with clan identity and mortuary themes. Mawurndjul was born in 1952 near Mumeka, an important camp site for members of the Kurulk clan on the Mann River some 50 kms south of Maningrida. He grew up at Mumeka and surrounding Tomkinson, Liverpool and Mann Rivers seasonal camps. In the late 1970s he was tutored in painting by his elder brother Jimmy Njiminjuma and uncle Peter Marralwanga, who showed him how to use rarrk (cross–hatching).

14

He initially painted on smaller barks and then on a larger scale, depicting important subjects and themes including the Ngalyod (the Rainbow Serpent), ancestral beings and significant sites in western Arnhem Land. During the late 1980s Mawurndjul started to produce large and more elaborate paintings with complex arrangements of figures. His work rapidly captured the attention of art critics and he won several notable art awards. During the 1990s he was represented in major international exhibitions, including Dreamings in New York (1988), Crossroads in Japan (1992), Aratjara: Art of the first Australians, Germany and the United Kingdom (1993–94), and In the Heart of Arnhem Land in France (2001). John Mawurndjul has been a major influence on contemporary Kuninjku artists and has led an exciting contemporary art movement in Australia. In 2000, his work was featured at the Sydney Biennale and in 1999, 2002 and 2016 he won the bark painting prize at the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award. In 2005, Mawurndjul was honoured with a major retrospective exhibition at the Musée Jean Tinguely in Basel, Switzerland, and in 2006 he completed a large–scale commission for the new Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, France.

CHARWEI TSAI IN COLLABORATION WITH TSERING TASHI GYALTHANG

HEAR HER SINGING 7 FEB-15 MAR 2020 17

Charwei Tsai’s video installation Hear Her Singing 2017 was made in collaboration with Tibetan filmmaker Tsering Tashi Gyalthang. Commissioned by the Hayward Gallery, the work takes the universality of song to create a platform for refugees and asylum seekers currently living or detained in the United Kingdom. Through a series of film installations, the artist presents multiple voices of struggle, resistance and hope. For this project Tsai worked closely with two charitable organisations, the Bedford Creative Arts Music in Detention, and Women for Refugee Women, as well as with vocal leader Phoene Cave. She drew on the foundations of care and solidarity between the women and used vocal workshops to invite the groups to sing to each other and send each other messages via audio recordings, creating a point of exchange for women who have experienced similar journeys.

IMAGE ABOVE Charwei TSAI in collaboration with Tsering Tashi GYALTHANG Hear Her Singing 2017 video, 16min 28sec Commissioned by Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, London UK

Following the workshops, the Women for Refugee Women drama group were invited to sing their chosen songs in front of the camera as a dedication to the struggle of women in Yarl’s Wood and beyond. These personal and powerful songs include religious, political and pop songs as well as original material. Performed and filmed in various locations around the Royal Festival Hall, Hear Her Singing creates a presence for the women’s voices throughout the gallery space, and invites visitors to stop, listen and engage with the songs and the sounds of women singing.

DRAWN TO WATER CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS

Drawn to Water presents original artworks from the Gallery’s Collection by three local artists, Anna Eglitis, Percy Trezise and Arone Raymond Meeks. Their works have been used to illustrate well known story books that present engaging and imaginative images of native animals and peoples of the region. Water, as a life force and a symbol of unity and togetherness, is a common thread in each story. In Sisi and the Cassowary by Arone Raymond Meeks, Sisi’s tribe live near the ocean but travel inland to the waterfall to swim. Her adventure begins when she surfaces from a deep dive and finds herself in an unfamiliar place. A media presentation of Sisi and the Cassowary in collaboration with Patty Preece and Dr Jan Cattoni - Creative Arts and Digital Media, CQU Cairns Campus has been developed for this exhibition. In Percy Trezise’s illustrated book, The Land of the Magpie Goose People, the children of the Kadimakara People must navigate around the Great Lake (Balanorga) and travel through many lands as they try to find their way back home. In their travels the children traverse many rivers and swamps while camping each night near creeks and lagoons.

IMAGE PAGE 19–20 Percy TREZISE Land of the Magpie Goose People 1997 gouache 30.0 x 56.0 cm Cairns Art Gallery Collection

In Creatures of the Rainforest, all the animals and plants that are illustrated by Anna Eglitis are reliant on water for sustenance and life. Their reliance leads to coexistence and dependency – the echidna drinks water from freshwater ponds while the mosquito flies above the waterlilies that grow in them, and the ibis and jabiru stand in the river looking for food where the barramundi swim.

ACTIVITY SPACE

The exhibition includes interactive spaces and hands–on activities to encourage reading, listening, talking and sharing of ideas.

WILLIAM YANG MY FAMILY IN NORTH QUEENSLAND

William Yang is best known as a photographer of people. Born a third–generation Chinese Australian, Yang grew up in Dimbulah on the Atherton Tableland and describes his upbringing as one in which his Chinese ethnicity ‘was suppressed and unacknowledged’. After studying architecture at Queensland University, Yang moved to Sydney to become a playwright, earning money as a social photographer. He met a Chinese teacher who encouraged him to embrace his Chinese heritage. As a result of this revelation, he went on a trip, in 1990, to Far North Queensland to talk to his relatives about the murder of his uncle, William Fang Yuen. In 1922 Fang Yuen had been shot by the white manager on

25

one of his cane farms. William visited places around Innisfail, Cairns and Dimbulah, where his family’s history is set, all the time taking photographs. These ended up in a performance piece Sadness, which toured Australia and the world, and was later made into a film by Tony Ayres. In finding out about his own family history he realised that it was part of the history of the Chinese in North Queensland and Australia. Although he has lived in Sydney for most of his life he acknowledges a deep bond with the people and the landscapes of North Queensland, because this was where he grew up, where he was formed. He often returns to the North and calls this place his home.

FOUNDATION This year’s annual fundraising dinner was a wonderfully inspiring and enjoyable event, living up to all our high expectations. We were thrilled that internationally acclaimed Australian artist, Patricia Piccinini, could be with us on the night to share with us her fascinating and very personal stories about the creation of new works specifically for her major exhibition at the Gallery, Life Clings Closest. I always look forward to and enjoy the annual Foundation dinner as an opportunity to catch up with our many Members and invited guests, and to talk with them about the important role the Foundation plays in raising donations to support the purchase of major acquisitions for the Gallery’s Permanent Collection.

Life Member Rosemary Goodsall who has been a passionate advocate and supporter of the Gallery and the Foundation over many years.
