I have a severe allergy to minimalism, which I generally find to be very dishonest. Therefore, I am very fond of stuff. Have you ever read the book by Marie Kondo about the Japanese art of de-cluttering? I think clutter is what makes us people, but there’s clutter and there’s clutter. The act of consumption should entail a skill that enables you to tell the difference between the things that you wish would make you happy and the stuff that really does. We all have expectations of life that can’t actually be achieved. Our parents tell us the best things in life are free and you go, “Yeah, the best things are a new apartment and a shiny new car”. There’s nothing wrong with stuff. So long as it’s stuff you love. Which brings us to this december edition where keeping it real is a major theme. Gracing our covers this month are images captured by Flavor Republic on a recent trip to Fayoum, read more about it on page 38. We get a chance to meet with Nahed El Sebai and talk about her recent movie A Day for Women. As ever, there are fashion and makeup features that bring you all the party looks this december. Elsewhere, our pages are absolutely stuffed with gorgeous gifts that are made in Egypt, to a detailed list of all the dahabiya and Steamer cruises that are available. We also talk about art education this month. do you want to get fit before the holiday season kicks in? We have top tips to watching your weight, and a ten-day shape up programme to get you prepared. May your holiday season be filled with love, laughter, adventures and memories that will last forever. The New Year brings new light and hope for all of us, and it stands before us, like a new chapter of a book that has yet to be written.

Gracing the Red Carpet at CIFF Nahed El Sebai Enchants us in A Day For Women By Francesca Sullivan

Last month, the new movie A Day for Women,

directed by Kamla Abou Zekri, launched the Cairo International Film Festival to much critical acclaim. The movie, which centres around a poor urban neighbourhood where the youth centre at a local swimming pool decides to have one day a week set aside for women only, features an array of stars including Nahed El Sebai, a familiar and popular actress from an impressive movie industry pedigree. Granddaughter of legends Farid Shawky and Hoda Sultan, her mother Nahed Farid Shawky is a renowned producer, and her aunt is actress Rania Farid Shawky. El Sebai’s range covers a wide span of recent dramatic projects, from low budget to blockbuster. In her career choices, El Sebai has not flinched from playing controversial or unusual roles,

9

such as the unfaithful wife in Sins of the Flesh, or Sabah in the internationally acclaimed art-house movie Ali, the Goat and Ibrahim, but she also enjoys a mainstream audience, for example in on-going TV epic series. In A Day for Women she gets her teeth into an important role, which as part of this ensemble piece, potentially has the power to initiate discourse on female empowerment at the lower end of the social spectrum. Alongside such notable stars as Elham Shahin, Mahmoud Hemida, Farouk Al Fishawy, Ahmad Al Fishawy and Nelly Karim, El Sebai brings to a life a fictitious situation that highlights real social issues but delivers them as enjoyable entertainment. Cairo Central Magazine managed to catch up with Nahed El Sebai between her red carpet appearances and heavy shooting schedule.

Celebrity

CCM: Nahed, you come from a dynasty of famous industry names. Was there ever any question that you would enter the world of film as well? NS: Actually, no. It was what I wanted to do from an early age; I never had another dream. What are your earliest acting memories? At eight years old, in the 1990’s, I took part in a TV movie alongside my mother. It feels like a long time ago and I actually don’t remember much about it. The first real work I did as an actress was much

“My mother has always been my biggest inspiration and also my guiding mentor.”

later (2009) in the movie Tell Me, Shaharazad. Which actor or actress do you most admire? There’s a long list. I’ve been inspired by numerous actors; Meryl Streep, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hanks are a few that come to mind. Which roles do you enjoy playing most, comedy or something a little darker? At the end of the day it’s not a question of comedy or drama, it’s about whether the role is a good

one or not. I choose my parts according to certain criteria, the most important of which is the director. If it’s someone whose work I admire, I’ll always consider the role. What moments stood out for you most while filming A Day For Women? Well, shooting in the pool! That was a totally new and different experience, and made the whole project unique. Physically it was harder, but really enjoyable at the same time. >>

Celebrity

How was the rapport between the amazing cast –members of wellknown stars on set? For me, it was an honour to be working alongside such great names, and that was one of the reasons I wanted the role to begin with. Also the crew were really excellent; I knew a lot of them from previous projects, and there was a great vibe on the set. What reaction do you anticipate from Egyptian audiences to A Day for Women. Do you think a film like this can have a big influence on ingrained perceptions in Egypt? I would like to think so. It’s had an excellent reception from the critics, but until it’s released we can never know how the public will react. It would be nice to think that a film that deals with attitudes towards women in such a fresh and different way could have an influence on our male dominated society. When it was shown at the London Film Festival there was a very positive response; people loved it, but they saw it from a slightly different perspective. Less to do with the role of women in Egypt specifically, and more to do with female empowerment in a general sense.

11

The film Ali, The Goat and Ibrahim received three awards at the recent Venice Film Festival. What was special for you about being part of this film? The fact that I really liked the story, and though I only had a small part in the film it felt good to be involved with it. For me what’s important is working with people whom I respect and have a good rapport. Which of your recent roles has presented the most challenges in terms of immersing yourself in the character? definitely A Day for Women. The character of Azza offered the kind of complex, in-depth role that doesn’t come up every day, especially for female actors. It was the challenging aspects of the character that made me want to play her. What are you currently working on? I’m filming season four of Saraya Abdeen. There are ninety episodes so far! It’s a big commitment, but it’s a team I enjoy working with, and the development of the character I play is interesting. How do you prepare for a new role? I have my own techniques. I read the script over and over, sometimes going to sessions with my acting coach for help. By doing research if necessary, especially for a historical character, or possibly spending time in an environment natural to the role. By developing the character and ‘living’ with her for a period of time before shooting.

Who has given you the most helpful advice ever? My mother has always been my biggest inspiration and also my guiding mentor, helping me choose the best paths in my career, and I have been grateful for her depth of experience and good advice.

QuICK FIRE ROuND: Favorite item of clothing? Anything bohemian. Early bird or late riser? I love early mornings! Best holiday ever? Cannes Film Festival. Even though it was not exactly a holiday. Ideal comfort food? Mombar… but I don’t know how to cook it myself. Three items you always have in your handbag? My wallet, my keys, a bottle of water. Yourself in five words? Someone who likes a challenge.

The No-Makeup Look with Red Lips Like the perfect black dress, the trick to pulling off a deep red lip, is all about balance. To offset red lips, you need to keep the rest of the face natural. Classic red is back in a big way, but it looks much cooler against bare skin with little concealer. By Lydia Schoonderbeek

Tip 1 Exfoliate lips with a wet towel, followed by some lip balm.

Tip 2

Fill in with a liner that matches the natural color of your lips (not the lipstick).

Tip 3 Apply color with a lip brush, starting at the center of your mouth blending outwards.

Avoiding Holiday Eating Traps

nutritionist dr. dalia abdel Ghany helps Us Survive the Festive Season

25

WellbeiNG

Christmas is just around the corner, and as excited as we all

are about the festive season, we are also worrying about weight gain. it seems to come hand in hand with all the parties and gatherings, which mostly tend to revolve around food. Food helps to bring people together. it’s part of our culture to gather at the table. So to survive the holiday party season, there are some tips and ways that will allow you to enjoy the occasions without worrying about your jeans not fitting the next day. This year, let’s try to avoid the food hangover and exercise reason when going in for our third helping. >>

WELLBEING

Statistics show that the average number of calories consumed only at a holiday dinner is 3000, that’s more than the average number of calories one should consume in a whole day. To enjoy the festivities without gaining weight you must learn to choose wisely and to think before you eat. If you’re the one hosting the dinner or the party, you have a great responsibility to find ways to make delicious dishes, that are also healthy, nutritious, and low in calories. For instance, instead of frying food, roast or grill it.

you’re eating more while you eat about 40% less as you downsize your plate. You can also take this trick to the next level by taking smaller sips and bites to trick your brain into eating fewer calories. When you take smaller bites and eat slower, you become full much faster as your brain is tricked into thinking you’ve eaten more.

Sprinkle Superfoods: Get creative with the vegetables and legumes in your kitchen. Sprinkle the small but mighty superfoods, such as quinoa, ground flax and chia seeds on your salads and plates. These superfoods are very beneficial and healthy. Sugar Alternative: Replace the desserts filled with sugar with healthier options like fruit salads, fresh fruit smoothies, light frozen yogurt, peanut cake, oat and banana cookies. You won’t have to compromise the variety or the deliciousness of your food, as you can find an endless amount of healthy and low fat recipes online or in cookbooks. Don’t Skip Meals: As a guest, you will also have to make some wise choices. Many of us skip lunch and sometimes even breakfast, when heading to a big party or dinner. That is a terrible mistake! When you skip meals, you slow down your metabolism and you end up eating much more then you should all at once, burdening your digestive system. Starving yourself all day is actually a lot worse than eating a balanced breakfast and lunch then moderately enjoying dinner. Smart Appetizers: Be smart when choosing your appetizers or your first buffet picks, because you eat the largest quantity of the foods you eat first. Try to start with something that is not heated such as salads or raw foods. These are usually the most nutritious and lowest in calories. Downsize Your Plate: Avoid anything that is fried or deep-fried, at all costs. One of my favorite tricks is to use an appetizer or salad plate. This tricks your brain into thinking

27

Flush Out Toxins: These are all ways you can enjoy dinner, without piling on extra weight. I always ask my patients to go on a mono-fruit detox for a day, where you basically pick a single fruit and eat it solely for a whole day and drink lots of water to flush out the toxins and the oils from the night before. This is the best way to repair the damage. Detox programs and intermittent fasting have proven to be amongst the healthiest and most effective ways for weight loss. Fasting doesn’t mean lack of nutrition, but switching to stored nutrition. Your body starts to get the energy it needs from fat reserves. Fat supplies most body tissues with energy, except for the central nervous system, which includes the brain. Because the brain requires sugar (glucose) for fuel, you must intake a small amount of natural glucose like juice or honey. Keep It Moderate: Moderation is key when it comes to dieting. Overindulgence directly leads to

weight gain. Many people use food to compensate their emotions. If you ever catch yourself overeating or indulging in food when sad or stressed, you must take a stand and stop yourself. You will have to discover new sources of pleasure besides eating and drinking. The best way to get rid of a bad habit is to replace it with a good one. Instead of indulging in a huge bowl of icecream while watching TV after a bad day, go for a walk or a jog. When you exercise, your brain releases endorphins, which are natural “drugs” that make you feel happy and energetic. Such healthy habits would also help get you into better physical shape, lifting your self-esteem and in turn boosting your mood. Eat Well, Live Well: Dieting is not only for people who are overweight. To lead a healthy life, you need to consider every little thing that goes into your mouth. By time, you get to know your body and understand what it easily metabolizes. Listen to what your body is telling you. Following a balanced diet that contains the right amount of protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates and fibers will impact your appearance and life in more ways than you can imagine. A healthy diet doesn’t only grant you the body you want. You will also find your hair and nails growing and your skin glowing, if you follow the right diet. Proper nutrition is the secret to health and beauty. Eat right. Be confident. Be happy!

Day Exercise Plan for Women

By Hesham Khalil

Any effective 10-day workout plan must include a

balance of aerobic exercise, strength training and rest. You want the 10 days to consist of intense workouts, but exercising every day for 10 days is a recipe for injury and overall body fatigue. Also, nourish yourself properly during your 10-day workout regimen. Eat foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats, low-fat dairy, whole grains, nuts and seeds to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to exercise and recover properly.

29

WELLBEING

Day 1

Go on a 20-minute run either through your neighborhood or on a treadmill. Running on actual terrain is a better workout, as you will be faced with natural elements such as hills that affect intensity. If you cannot run for the entire 20 minutes, walk in between periods of running. The important thing is to stay in constant motion for the entire 20 minutes. Rest for up to three minutes after your run, and drink water to rehydrate yourself. Then do the following exercises: •

Push-ups (Rep 15-2 sets)

Sit-ups (Rep 15-2 sets)

Rest for three minutes, rehydrate with water, then do the following exercises: •

Lunges (Rep 15-2 sets)

Bear in mind that squat is a hip movement; lower your hip and not your back.

Always keep your knees and feet aligned; never let your knees go beyond your feet line.

Never bump your knees on the floor.

don’t widen your step; keep your hips and thighs on the same level.

PLANKS: • In both high plank and low plank, you should keep your hands or elbows below your shoulder, or slightly wider. •

Keep your waistline straight.

Keep your feet either at one point together or hip width apart, based on your preference.

PuSH uPS: • Always keep your hand below your shoulder, or slightly wider.

Sailing The Glorious Nile The Authentic Way

33

By Amina El Fayoumi

FEATURE

On board El Bey - Musk

A Dahabiya, which literally translates to “the golden one” in Arabic, is a large

comfortable shallow-bottomed sailing boat with two large sails, traditionally used by the Egyptian royal family, as well as aristocrats and celebrities in their luxurious travels up and down the waters of the legendary Nile. It’s the improved, more modern, version of the ancient feluccas with their typical skilled Rais (skipper) in long galabeyas. These are true sailboats; powered by the wind only. There is no engine which means travelers can enjoy an unparalleled sense of peace and tranquility, but risk being towed by a tug when there’s not enough wind to fill the sails. >>

On board El Bey - Musk

“The Nile, forever new and old, Among the living and the dead, Its mighty, mystic stream has rolled.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

FEATURE

King Fouad’s Steamship - The S/S Sudan Accommodating just around 12 passengers on average, dahabiyas are exclusive means of travel with family and friends. The crew has completely separate quarters to ensure the guests’ privacy. The relatively small-sized, easy to maneuver dahabiyas are able to sail to lesser renowned sites only frequented by a select few. Dahabiya journeys can take distinguished travelers not only to the internationally celebrated highlights on the banks of the river Nile, but also to less famous monuments and islands in the river and villages along the banks, where the large cruise ships can never access or moor. The trip itinerary, usually between the months of September to May, successfully blends the historical and magical elements of landscape with tours between Aswan and Luxor including visits to the High Dam, Philae Temple, the Botanical Garden Island in Aswan, Kom Ombo temple, Edfu temple, Esna and all the Luxor landmarks like the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut temple and the Colossi of Memnon, Luxor and Karnak temples. A typical day on board the dahabiya is centered on its half-shaded sun deck, the heart of the dahabiya. With abundant chairs, sun beds and dining tables, this is the perfect place to enjoy daily life on the riverbanks and watch the gorgeous

landscape gliding by. Meals are freshly prepared on board and served on the sundeck, in the dining room or on a special spot on the banks of the Nile. Accommodation on board usually consists of 6 to 8 luxuriously furnished fully equipped ensuite cabins, which can host up to two people. Prices include full board, excursions and transfers, and are based on two people sharing a cabin. Cairo West Magazine has compiled for its readers a list of dahabiyas cruising up and down the Nile offering their travelers a once in a lifetime experience. The average cost for 10 Egyptians would be around 25,000 EGP per dahabiya for 5 days between Luxor and Aswan. Add another 500 EGP per person for sightseeing and excursions:

Flavor Republic Shares the Best of Fayoum On Pottery, Doors, Fish and Where to Chill Out

FEATURE

It’s so easy to get caught up with our day-to-day duties, working long hours and feeling giddy about conquering our to-do lists at the end of a long week. Tasks mark the beginning of our journey and reaching the finish line becomes all too consuming that

sometimes we forget to eat. We hit the ground running and boom! We’ve made it through the day. We’re proud, and the sheer thrill of accomplishment keeps us going for days, even months, without a moment to reflect. >>

FEATURE

But what is at stake is not just our sanity, our barometer for a happy, healthy soul. It’s our ability to continue to produce new content while outplaying what’s ordinary. A chance for us to chase our passion; rejuvenated and perpetually inspired. With that in mind, the Flavor Republic team drove south to the city of Fayoum for a weekend of fishing, shopping and much needed time together away from the office. For two days, they walked the narrow streets of Tunis, awestruck by the mud brick houses, ceramic selection and gorgeous old doors. For them, it was a chance to reflect and spend time together without the stress of work. A welcome journey where the hustle and bustle of Cairo was temporarily replaced by a quiet, picture-perfect Fayoum. The experiences left a different impression on each one, and below are snippets of their stories from that weekend.

Mariam Shawki

This retreat unconsciously created a test of time management, of collaboration and of teamwork: trying to plan the day together and sticking to it and planning to do things separately but meeting in the end were both examples at play. I enjoyed how chilled people were in Fayoum, they don’t care if you come and go; they don’t care what you do or what you wear. Coming from the busy, loud and nosey Cairo that was a nice change of pace. The air was cleaner, and the noise level was much lower. I noticed few things about Tunis that I found iconic: there seems to be a continuous stream that flows under their streets, no matter which street you walk in, you’ll always hear this little waterfall of water below you. Everyone seems to have kept their old doors and never thought about repainting them, which is great, because it was in the most perfect used condition. I wished we could have taken all of them and used them as surfaces in our shoots. We also bought some really pretty pottery from Tunis. Looking at them in our prop closet, they now look much prettier than when they did at the shop.

My most memorable moments were when we were sitting all together at the dining table, through breakfast and lunch. It felt like if this were the only thing we would do during the trip, it would still be a fun trip. I was happy to spend some personal time with the team, without being towed by work. Laila is such a low maintenance girl; we all had pull-along carry on suitcases, and she was off with a trip in a duffle bag - so cute. White fish really didn’t like Hoda, and I believe Mahy could have stayed in that pond forever, fishing quietly. >>

Fayoum left rather an artistic mark on me. I initially thought we were going to do team building activities where we’d get a chance to get to know each other, although I think I already had an idea of who everyone was. Looking back now I realize I traveled with people who are very artistic - actually, extremely artistic. While walking through Tunis, I felt each and every one could create art from anything that we laid eyes on, whether it was a door in the middle of a crushed wall, an animal, a window or just kids running across the street. The amount of doors we saw... beautiful! Everyone made me realize how little things can still be beautiful, how you can capture something that was left behind and change the way you look at it, turn it around to make it seem more valuable. I kept on asking: “So

43

you would take this door and not paint over it?” And the answer was, “We wouldn’t change a thing.” Every time they’d say that, I was wowed. I see myself as someone who loves nature and greenery and the little things, but this trip made me realize other little things that I felt only this bunch saw. I felt I was around very humble people. Everyone is really, really talented in their own way, and I’m really happy I’m part of this team. After this trip, I felt like I have a lot to learn.

Mahy Megahed

I really enjoyed this short trip. Fayoum is a really cozy place, I loved everything about it. The clean air, its humble yet productive people, their doors, and - last but not least - fishing! I was also surprised by Lake Qaroun. It’s beautifully huge, something I didn’t expect.

I wish I could live like this forever, clean weather away from the city, fresh and healthy food - we even got our herbs and lemons from Kom El Dikka’s own garden. I love our team. Everyone has his own personality. I loved spending time with them, I feel like they are my family now. We also missed some people who couldn’t make it, like Hanya, our head of communication and social media (my personal comfort person) -- oh how I miss her and Sara, our studio producer. I think my big takeaway was the realization that we’re all on the same page with regards to sharing and affecting each other’s workload. Now, on the other side, I’m going to use the clarity I got from the retreat to do amazing stuff with this team. **Endless gratitude to Kom El Dikka for hosting us, feeding us and lending us their garden. As the world wakes up to a changing reality, the concept of

space and how we use it has been thrown under the spotlight. recycled containers around the globe are now being reinvented as homes, offices and weekend getaways, incorporating eco-friendly energy solutions and innovative design concepts. tempted to simplify your life and downsize? Cairo Central Magazine caught up with dynamic duo, Youssef Farag and Karim Rafla, who can turn your dream into a reality. 45

CCM: When did you launch the company, and what was the inspiration behind it? YF: I graduated from AUC in 2014 with a major in Finance. However, once I had my degree I quickly realized that this wasn’t the career path I saw myself in, I wanted something that would give me a license to be creative, and a decision maker. Karim and I have known each other for years, so when he came to me with the idea for Qubix we just went full throttle from day one. I was motivated both by the people who supported me and the people who didn’t see the vision or potential that I saw, I wanted to prove people right just as much as I wanted to prove others wrong.

KR: I graduated from Regents University in London with a major in Global Business Management in 2014. I really enjoyed my college life in London, I saw and learned things that have served as an inspiration for what I am doing today. I first saw the concept of Cargotecture in 2012 when I heard of Container City in the outskirts of London, I took a train to see what it was all about and it was amazing, there were hotels, apartment buildings, malls, office buildings and sports clubs, all made out of containers, and I knew this was a concept I could bring to Egypt. In everything I do, failure is never an option. Which countries have been at the forefront of using this idea? KR: I first saw Cargotecture in London, as I explored further, I saw it in Holland used as on-campus student housing for Universities, I saw it in Paris as restaurant under the Eiffel Tower. This is a concept that has been in use throughout Europe for the past eight years, and it has been picking up speed in Canada and the U.S. for all the same reasons that make it advantageous to conventional building methods. You get faster construction time, cost-efficiency, being eco-friendly, easily movable, limitless adaptability and customization as well as safety and security of the product. How do the costs compare against traditional housing? YF: Our products cost 40% less and are constructed 60% faster than traditional buildings. A huge advantage of Cargotecture in terms of building is that a Cargotecture structure does not require the foundations a conventional building would require. What are the environmental and safety benefits? YF: The environmental and safety benefits of Cargotecture are manifold and they are evident in the production process and post delivery. At the very start, we select containers that have been used for certain types of shipping, such as textiles, agricultural goods, or machinery, ensuring that no toxic chemicals were ever inside the container. This also means that we not only recycle, but up-cycle 3-4 tons of steel that would otherwise

be rusting away in storage or container graveyard. The production process produces a significantly lower ecological footprint than conventional building methods that require fossil fuel energy intensive machinery working for hours upon hours, we use fossil fuels only when we move and place the containers. Post-delivery our products have very low energy consumption due to our high-grade insulation used in the ceiling and walling, as well as our use of glass panels to increase natural light in the interior. How are the containers adapted for use? KR: Each container goes through an intense transformation process before we deem it consumer ready. The main parts of the transformation process is that we build a steel structure on the complete interior surface area of the container to make the structure stronger than it already is, allowing it to be used indefinitely. We then insulate the walling and ceiling to ensure that the interior is well insulated from the cold and heat. We then rust-proof and waterproof the exterior and paint it in accordance to the design we create for our client. Is it possible to have full plumbing and electricity installed? What about sewage? KR: Our containers are described as plug and play, they are a turn-key product, they come ready with an electric socket that is connected to the main power of any site and the container is instantly connected and running on electric power, the same applies to plumbing, our containers arrive ready to be connected to any sites main sewage system and are ready to operate. What sizes do the containers come in, and what is the limit as to how many can be joined together to create an office or dwelling? YF: Containers come in two sizes, 20ft and 40ft (6m and 12m) both with a width and height of 2.65m. There is absolutely no limit to how many containers you can join together to open one space, you can also stack up to twelve containers on top of each other and use cantilever designs to make a project look even cooler. There’s simply nothing that can’t be done. >>

Home & GarDeN

How are they insulated against rain, cold and heat? YF: We insulate the exterior with rust proof chemicals that maintain the life span of the steel and protect it from rust. We use two types of high-grade insulation that maintain the interior temperature of the container against both heat and cold. What permits and licenses are required to use them on a site? KR: Our products are used mostly on private residential and commercial properties so no permits are required. We are currently working on registering a Cargotecture specific building code in Egypt so that we can build larger structures for public use.

Are there restrictions as to the land registration, i.e agricultural, urban plan? KR: No, our Cargotecture creations are classified as light structure buildings and movable, therefore they are not subject to the same restrictions for conventional building on private agricultural lands. What is needed to make it a registered dwelling? YF: Before we can branch out into building large residential projects for the public, which is something we plan on doing in the future, we will need to register and establish a building code with the relevant government entities in order for them to be legal and be integrated into the country’s electric grid and plumbing system.

47

Can solar heating and power be used? YF: Yes, we can install solar panels on any of our products. What other features are possible? YF: Along with solar panels we can install a hydraulic system that makes whole sides of the container retract down and be used a seating area of any kind, we can install retractable roofs, we can use glass on as much of the exterior surface area as required, we can stack and join as many containers as desired, we can fit the containers roof to be used as a seating area for homes or restaurants or offices, we can add any other feature that our clients dream up, as we always say, the beauty of this is that there are no limits to what you can do.

How long does it take to prepare a container for use? KR: It takes us 21 to 30 days to build any project made up of 1 to 3 containers of any size. Our production facility has the capacity to produce 25 fully finished containers a month, that is approximately 400 – 650 m2 of fully finished interior space. To what extent can you customize them to meet the purchaser’s requirements? YF: There is no customization we can’t offer, the first step of our process is that we sit with our clients and find out exactly what they need and we incorporate all their needs into their tailor made designs. All our products are turnkey solutions tailored exactly to our clients needs. What is the starting price? YF: Our one-container products range from 90k to 180k depending on size and features. We offer discounts when more than two containers are used. Our prices include logistics to the client and onsite installation.

Digital Nomads in Dahab Living and Working the Dream at CoworkInn

By Hilary Diack

Feeling boxed in by four walls and the smog of the city? The 9-5 routine destroying your soul? Now that we can stay connected and still be productive 24/7, from virtually anywhere, Cairo Central Magazine can’t resist sharing our new discovery. Dahab resident and entrepreneur, Mira Arnold, gives us the lowdown on how to make work seem like play in idyllic surroundings. Get your bags packed!

CCM: What is the concept behind CoworkInn? MA: CoworkInn is a place where people, mostly digital nomads, from everywhere in the world, can meet and work. The concept is to work in a different place, to find new inspirations, to meet new people and exchange your ideas with them, to form a community, to be motivated by others. Having workshops and camps to learn new things, and to jump in the pool or the sea for a little break. How did the idea come about? I started in a start-up enterprise, which was really nice, but I felt that I was missing something. So I wanted to start my own business and the best place for it was Dahab, where I worked seven years ago as a dive guide. I love Dahab so much, and I always wanted to live here, so I decided to create a co-working space there. The initial plan was to have a hostel, but then I met so many interesting business people, digital nomads as we describe them. I wanted to be surrounded by them, and that was how my idea of the coworking space came into being. Is the facility used mainly by Egyptian residents, or are you finding interest coming from abroad? There are many people who are interested and not just Egyptians. Germans come regularly, but we

also have people from every other country and culture. Are there many people who have chosen to continue working while using Dahab as their base? Yes, many people come to Dahab to work from here and to enjoy the beauty of Dahab. This work-lifebalance works out perfectly and all the guests we have had want to come back soon. But some people also ask about just coming on vacation. That’s why we have a new project called JustInn Dahab where people can also come just for holidays. What are the main advantages of living in Dahab? In Dahab you are surrounded by sea and mountains; it’s so beautiful here. It’s sunny and warm and the stars are amazing. But the best is the community: Dahab is like one big family and you feel so at home, welcome and loved here. Do you have any logistical challenges or are you connected with all the tech required? The main challenge is the Internet: it can be really slowly in Egypt, but we generally have a stable, good Internet connection, and always more than one backup.

Do you see this as a new trend where people can still be creative and work while enjoying a more natural lifestyle? Yes, I think this is a new and positive trend. You are so much more productive and creative if you have a chance to calm down, take a walk along the beach, meet relaxed, agreeable people and just be surrounded by love. Refer to our address book

The Importance of

Art Education in Academic and Career Success

By Steve Gooch

As the academic year kicks into high gear and exams creep ever closer, parents all over the country are encouraging their children to get down to some serious study, work hard in school and do their homework. Many are investing in extra tuition to nail those important subjects, like maths, English and science. The pressure is on to grab those A’s and then later, get a place at a “good” university. 51

FEATURE

But what of the other subjects on the curriculum, like art and music, and in some places, drama and dance, which help to develop a student’s imagination and creative abilities? Too often, these subjects tend to be given little importance, and are marginalised at the expense of those that will lead directly into a “career”. After all, why would a prospective engineer or doctor need to know how to draw a vase of flowers? Albert Einstein, the world’s greatest theoretical physicist said, “The greatest scientists are artists as well.” He was stating a fact that all true educationalists understand as a given: that learning and practicing the principles of art is absolutely vital to the development of critical thinking. And critical thinking not only applies to scientists, it extends to all areas of academia, whether it be maths, information technology, history or geography. A’s will get a child into university, and maybe one day they’ll be at the top of their particular profession. But will they stand out and be the Einstein of their field? Probably not. Thinking “outside the box” is vital, and that is a skill that art, more than any other subject, provides.

Imagination: The Womb of Critical Thinking Problem-solving skills, i.e. the ability to see the world in a different way, to think around a problem and view it from a different angle, takes imagination and is the cornerstone of success in all subjects. And the more advanced the level of study, the more important the skill becomes. It’s a skill that arts

educationalists can rightly claim their own. Nowhere else in the curriculum, is it taught so comprehensively and with such a powerful focus on the real world. Imagination is from where all human success springs. Imagination is, let’s be blunt about this, the womb of critical thinking. Art lessons play an important role in nurturing young minds and developing their creative and >>

imaginative abilities, and this spills over into non-art related subjects. A comprehensive study by James Catterall, professor of education at the University of California in Los Angeles, reported that students who had more involvement in the arts scored better in standardized tests. Catterall said, “While education in the arts is no magic bullet for what ails many schools, the arts warrant a place in the curriculum because of their intimate ties to most everything we want for our children and schools.”

collage contribute substantially to the development of visual literacy. According to Dr Kerry Freedman, Head of Art and Design Education at Northern Illinois University, “Parents need to be aware that children learn a lot more from graphic sources now than in the past. Children need to know more about the world than just what they can learn through text and numbers. Art education teaches students how to interpret, criticize, and use visual information, and how to make choices based on it.”

Art Increases Chance of Academic Success If parents are worried about the academic success of their children, then more art is needed, not less. It has been widely reported that involvement in the arts can lead to gains in maths, reading, verbal skills, critical thinking, cognitive ability, motivation, concentration, confidence and teamwork. According to Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit organization, children are four times more likely to get noted for academic success, when they participate regularly in art activities. In the area of language development, the practice of art for younger children provides opportunities for them to talk about their work, learning the words for different colours, shapes and the motor skills employed. They learn to use descriptive words to discuss their work and talk about their feelings in relation to their work and the work of others. The development of motor skills is also enhanced through an engagement with art. Holding a paintbrush, using scissors and scribbling with crayon help with the growth of the finer motor skills that are needed at a later stage of development. Art engagement helps develop the dexterity needed for writing. In a world filled with smartphones, tablets, laptops, televisions and other technological gadgets, visual literacy is more important than ever. Drawing, painting, making things from clay or sticking beads on to a

53

The world that children are moving into is one filled with visual stimuli of all kinds: marketing logos, advertising hoardings and other graphic symbols, delivered through a variety of media, and at an everincreasing pace. Having a developed sense of visual literacy helps children and young adults navigate this world, and become smart consumers and producers. “The kind of people society needs to make it move forward are thinking, inventive people who seek new ways and improvements, not people who can only follow directions. Art is a way to encourage the process and the experience of thinking

and making things better,” says MaryAnn Kohl, an arts educator and author of numerous books about art education. By encouraging children to express themselves and to make things that previously hadn’t existed in the world, they start to develop a sense of innovation and inventiveness that will be necessary skills in their adult lives. Cultural Awareness Through Art Allied to the ability to understand the society that exists around us, is cultural awareness. We are constantly bombarded with images from around the world, and we read the world according to our understandings of it. That understanding is framed against our own culture, which we buy into based on social values and the influence of our parents, relatives, friends and colleagues, amongst other things. Through the study of art, we can start to contextualise other cultures and learn that what an artist or designer portrays is simply their interpretation of reality, which may be different, but equally valid, to our own. We develop an insight into other ways of being. Art has a long and proud history in Egypt, perhaps more so than in any other country. The history of Egypt, and thus civilisation itself, going back several millennia, is told through the creative, visual expressions of generations of artists and craftsmen who highly prized their artistic abilities and creative skills. What would be left of ancient Egypt, were it not for the work of artists? Very little. “When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come close to the conclusion that the gift of imagination has meant more to me than any talent for absorbing absolute knowledge… Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world,” Einstein said, and in this, he sums up the cultural urgency there is for an educational refocusing on not only visual art, but the other art forms like music, dance and drama as well.

Starting your Mother and Child Journey Right

Health

The Epidural The epidural is usually administered when the woman is in active labor, which is usually when she is about 4-5cm dilated and is having regular contractions. In the doses given, the drug in the epidural is unlikely to affect the newborn and make him drowsy. The epidural is a very effective form of pain relief during labor, and it allows you to remain clear-headed throughout the process.

It usually starts after you notice that your cycle is a bit late, which naturally leads to the purchase of a pregnancy test. After those two lines appear on the stick, a woman’s life changes forever. This article is dedicated to the journey that a mother and child go through; some may just be starting the journey, others may be well along their way. Wherever you happen to be, this article includes useful tips to help you along your journey. The Prenatal Period Once you find out you are pregnant, it is important to get early and regular prenatal care. It is important to discuss with your physician any medications you are using, since some may not be safe during pregnancy. You need to ensure your vaccinations are up to date, and that you take your flu shot. It is also very important to start a multivitamin containing 400-800 micrograms of folic acid. Your obstetrician will conduct routine ultrasounds during the pregnancy, and request certain blood tests. It is also important to remember to eat healthy, stop smoking, and get at least 2 hours of activity during the week. Do not eat any raw or undercooked foods, and wash vegetables and fruits well before eating them. Finally, if you are around cats regularly, mention this fact to your physician.

The Delivery This can often be a very exciting and stressful time. Whichever birth plan you choose, it is important to remember that right after delivery, if everything went smoothly and mother and baby are both up to it, to try to have immediate skin-to-skin contact with your baby. This is when the baby is placed on the mother’s chest right after birth, since it helps keep the newborn warm and allows bonding between mother and child. Also, during this time the mother can feed her newborn for the first time. Natural Birth Some women prefer having the most natural birth possible. This usually entails an un-medicated approach during labor, and minimal routine interventions and monitoring. If this is a route you prefer to take, make your desires clear to your obstetrician. Coming up with a birth plan is very helpful, and having a supportive partner goes a long way. Other things to focus on include breathing and visualization exercises, and positioning and movement; topics often discussed in childbirth classes.

The Neonatal Period Breastfeeding The benefits of breastfeeding have been proven time and time again, and include protection against certain infections, obesity, allergies, and even certain types of cancers. For this reason, the best nutrition a mother can provide to her newborn is breast milk. This process can sometimes be difficult to start at first. After about four days, the breast milk quantity will increase and also become whiter in color. A mother needs a healthy, well-balanced diet while breastfeeding and can have up to 200 mg of caffeine a day (two mugs of tea, two mugs of instant coffee, or one mug of filter coffee). Sleep Do not be surprised when your newborn sleeps for most of the day, a baby needs about 16 to 17 hours of sleep a day. During the first few weeks of life, your newborn will also not stay asleep for more than two to four hours at a time. However, gradually the sleep patterns of children will improve; and usually around 4-6 months (sometimes even earlier) most infants will sleep for longer stretches at night.

December Horoscopes Whew... 2016 was quite a ride. Let’s see how we can wind up the year and pave the way for a great 2017. It’s the Festive Season, time to get together with friends, family and workmates, and this is how the planets look during December. The first week of the month brings a good deal of feisty energy with some strong Mars aspects in the sign of Aquarius. There is definitely a mood of change in the air, and action rather than mere words. Mercury goes retrograde yet again on December 19th, so except the usual glitches in communication, travel and with machinery. Avoid jumping into situations on the 19th, Mars’ entry into Pisces could provoke emotional reactions rather than clear thinking. Birthday sign

Sagittarius The month opens with a build up of energy in your third house of mental processes, short trips and communication. There seems to be a lot on your mind, but when it comes to putting plans into action, timing is key. Use the 12th to express yourself, you should have a unique viewpoint and good insight into an important matter. Take extra care with financial matters after the 19th, carelessness could cost you a lot! If you are celebrating Christmas on the 25th, a mood of friendship and bonding should make it a special day. Famous Sagittarians: Bette Midler - Singer and Actress, Brad Pitt - Actor, Frank Sinatra - Singer and Actor,

Nelly Karim - Actress and Ballerina, Steven Spielberg - Film Director, Winston Churchill Statesman

earth sign Capricorn will sit nicely with your no-nonsense and slightly ruthless mood this month.

Gemini

Aries A born initiator, and even rabblerouser at times, the first week of the month could see you involved in lots of social activity. If you have a pet project, this is the time to get your friends on board. The mood of the Festive Season may have you little lightheaded on the 26th, so if you are confused about the status of a relationship, try to sort it out discreetly, rather than make assumptions. Consolidate your career position in the last week of the month while everyone else is recovering from too much partying.

Some strong planetary energy in Aquarius harmonizes with Gemini air energy, so anything linked to studies, foreign climes and travel plans should get a boost this month. Mercury’s passage through your 8th house could see you scrambling to collect on old loans, or raise credit to finance your plans. If you are out of town for Christmas Day it should be especially memorable, the 25th has some of the best aspects of the month. If travel is not an option, make sure you wind up your last days of the year with interesting people from a crosssection of cultures.

Cancer

Taurus Your Taurean determination will come to the fore early in December, with your sights firmly set on climbing the career ladder. Heaven help anyone who tries to block your path, the bull can become a bulldozer when the goal is in sight. By the 7th, your ruling planet Venus will add a healthy dose of charm to your approach, so remember to look your best and keep your manners polished to perfection. Mercury’s transit through fellow

Difficult as it may be, try to keep finances and close relationships disentangled during December. However, if it is a business partnership, that may present a challenge. It is vital to be clear in communication with key people in your life this month, especially after the 19th when misunderstandings can arise. However, the 25th is brimming over with positive energy, so you may receive an unexpected gift or line of credit. Don’t let this affect your good judgment on the 26th though, keep your feet on the ground!

FEATURE

Leo Any form of close cooperation is supported during that important first week of the month. If you are thinking of a new business partnership, or relationship, you will need to act fast to make the most of opportunities. Your natural enthusiasm and leadership skills can inspire others; even if you want to wear the boss’s hat all the time. You may need to take care of health and workplace issues, frazzled nerves and miscommunication could be your undoing. Get plenty of rest and eat right!

Virgo Your ruling planet Mercury will throw the spotlight on issues to do with children, pets, hobbies and your creative impulses. Sounds good? Until the retrograde period that kicks in on the 19th that is. Then things can go a bit haywire, especially with Mars setting up a bit of confrontation when it enters your 7th house of significant others. Start the month with a plan, a simple one, and try to stick to it. Don’t try to tackle too much, and take note of your key supportive days around the 20th and 25th.

Libra You need to get things sorted a little on the home front. That could cover family relationships as well as the domestic environment. This is not a time

for procrastination, because events after the 19th could tie you up too much to leave time for chores. Helpful aspects from fellow air sign Aquarius add an element of the unexpected to your romantic life. That’s not a bad thing, either! You could be attracted to somebody a little quirky or avant-garde this month.

as missed appointments and delays. Take a deep breath or two, and make the most of an absolutely fabulous Christmas Day on the 25th, where the mood of goodwill is brimming over.

Aquarius

Scorpio Your domestic life is at the fore as December kicks off, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as you should have the energy to handle what comes your way. You need to keep your brain alert and rested because you will probably see an increased level of emails, meetings, and time on the road this month. Try to clear up important tasks before the 19th, as mix-ups and tech glitches could occur during the following days. Best day for home entertaining? The 25th is stellar.

Ready to rumble? The 2nd, 3rd and 7th will be days when you should be ready to pull out all the stops and get projects and plans under way. Friends may need your help with tasks, or you may get reined into a community effort of some sort. It’s not all work and no play though; Venus will glide into your birth sign on the 7th bringing enjoyment to your daily routine. You could be slowed down by unexpected circumstances after the 19th, but the 25th has some great planetary aspects in your sign, so promises to be a fun day.

Pisces

Capricorn As December opens, you may follow a period of contemplation with a renewed vigor aimed at improving your finances. The Moon in your birth sign will give you all the support you need for this, so make a plan and stick with it. After the 7th this should start to bear fruit. Try to get as much done as possible before the 19th, when Mercury retrogrades in Capricorn. There could be glitches with tech, and household appliances, as well

You are usually the kind soul who pours loads of time and effort into running around after other people, so if you feel a bit worn out as December rolls around you should sit back and let others pull their weight for a change. They can come to you for advice and words of wisdom, but try to leave the hectic side of any activities to others. Events around the 19th may be confusing and frustrating, just keep a low profile and try to ride it out. Rather than big parties, try for a more intimate gathering on the 25th with a few close friends.

Taba to Sharm El Sheikh on a Bicycle

GBI (Global Biking Initiative) just held their first trip of the 2016/2017 season in beautiful Sinai. Around 65 people ages 14 to 45, both men and women joined the 2016 GBI Sinai tour, cycling around 250 km starting on 2nd November from Taba Heights heading to Dahab. The group included 3 Germans, one Brazilian and one Jordanian. A spectacular view of the stunning Red Sea to their left, and the historic Sinai mountains to their right, passing Nuweiba.

The road to Dahab was a challenge with a13km uphill climb to reach a height of 750m above sea level. The welcoming of Dahab locals was overwhelming, as well as that of the authorities, the scouts and local children who joined the group as it cruised the streets of Dahab. After a chilly night in Dahab, the group geared up to continue to Sharm El Sheikh. This time amazing mountains with different rock shapes and formations on both sides inspired the group to keep going. Riders

59

faced their second challenge, a 20km incline, then another 10km incline known as the Jewish uphill, which brought the group to 650m above sea level. As well as encouraging people to follow green and healthy lifestyles, using cycling as both leisure and transportation, GBI has a very important message for the world: Egypt and specifically Sinai are not only safe, but amazing places to visit. Promoting Taba Through Kayaking and Cycling

In a startling new initiative to promote Taba as a safe haven for visitors around the world, a group of young Egyptian athletes kayaked from Taba Heights across the Red Sea to Aqaba. The kayaking team, Exodus, is called so because their trip attempts to cross the sea in the footsteps of Moses. The aim of the trip is to unveil the fascinating and peaceful nature of Taba and to promote Eco sports in local communities. The successful twoday kayaking trip started from Taba Heights- Sinai, crossing the Red Sea all the way to Tala Bay- Aqaba, ending back in Taba again. The Exodus initiative was sponsored by Orascom Hotels and Development.

Equipped with a few basic gadgets to complete this mission including Go-Pro cameras, online trackers, satellite phones, nutrition and supplements, a compass and Garmin navigators, the Exodus team of athletes crossed 16 Kilometers between Egypt to Jordan and back, in a first of its kind cross-country kayaking adventure in Egypt. Their starting point was the ideally located Orascom Hotels and Development’s prestigious Taba Heights Resort. The second initiative was a four-day biking trip across Sinai in collaboration with GBI Shine Egypt, to reveal Sinai’s fascinating scenery.

Superbrands 6th Annual Awards at the Semiramis

Intercontinental Cairo

Superbrands, the International arbiter of excellence in branding held its 6th tribute event, also dubbed globally as the ‘Oscars of Branding’. The awards honored brands in the Egyptian marketplace voted as Superbrands by the members of the Superbrands Egypt Brand Council. The 6th edition of the much sought-after Superbrands book, which includes a twopage profile of each of the Superbrands was also unveiled. The event was hosted by Ms. Safaa Abdel Bary, Egypt Country Director and Mr. Mike English, Director Superbrands Middle East, and was held at the Semiramis Intercontinental Cairo. It was attended by the country’s most prominent senior business, marketing and branding executives. At the event, the Superbrands Egypt Brand of the Year was announced - the accolade being awarded to Nile Radio Productions.

61

Distributing the awards, Mr. English said, “Successful branding differentiates your brand from all the others. It makes the buyer believe that there is no firm, product or service quite like yours. Branding is important for buyer decision-making, as it provides a short cut to identifying products or professional services with high value. The more distinctive the brand, and its brand identity, the less likely a client will accept a substitute”.

Christmas Turkey Made Easy If you’re celebrating Christmas by hosting a traditional dinner or festive

party, then you have your work cut out for you. Throwing a Christmas dinner or party is a lot more than decorating a tree and putting up some lights; you must make sure that you are more than ready to fill your guests’ stomachs with food that’s as warm as the season. Time to defrost that turkey and get cookin’!

Christmas Turkey Ingredients • 1 Turkey (any size) •

2 Cups chicken broth, or vegetable broth, or water

1 Cup unsalted butter, melted (optional)

Equipment • Roasting pan (or an alternative roasting dish). •

Roasting rack (or something to lift the turkey off the pan).

Brush

67

Method Take the turkey out of the fridge 30 minutes to 1 hour before roasting. Remove any packaging from the inside.

Place the turkey in the oven and turn down the heat to 170°C. Shield the breast meat with foil toward the end of cooking if it starts getting too browned.

Position an oven rack in the bottom third of your oven and preheat the oven to 230°C.

For an 8 Kg turkey, it will take about 3.5 hours, but start checking on your turkey every 15 minutes.

Set the turkey breast-side up on the roasting rack and let it sit while the oven preheats. This takes the chill off the meat, which helps the meat cook faster and more evenly.

Every 45 minutes, remove the turkey from the oven, close the oven door (don’t let that heat out!). Tilt the pan and use spoon to scoop up the pan liquids and drizzle them on top of the turkey.

Rub it with some salt and pepper before putting it in the oven. Leave your turkey un-stuffed so that the turkey will cook more evenly. When ready to roast, pour two cups of broth or water into the roasting pan.

Carve the turkey the same way you would carve a chicken. Remove the wings first, then the thighs, then the breast meat.
