HI, I’M CAITLIN I have a friendly, professional nature and am determined to succeed in all avenues of my life. In my spare time, you can find me hunting for second-hand treasures (I do love a good bargain). I love being active and spending time in nature, so my perfect Saturday weather permitting, would include an outdoor activity followed by a few cheeky wines with friends by night. Inspired by the world, I hope to travel more in the future, but after recently purchasing my first home, I have an exciting renovation project on my hands. 01 Evolving the Open Office

P l ac e o f work Location: No Specific Location Project Type: Academic Year: 2016

Briefed to evolve the design of a typical open office environment to support employee well-being. Conforming to the functional requirements of an office this project aims to create a variety of workspace options to improve performance and employee comfort. To enhance workplace happiness the design process led to the inclusion of three key areas, providing spaces for concentration, collaboration and contemplation. By ensuring mobility, privacy, natural light and access to the outdoors the design seeks to increase job performance and satisfaction.

The central open workspace includes a variety of elements to increase employee health and well-being. The office is equipped with ergonomic chairs, exercise balls and a custom designed desk giving occupants the option to work sitting or standing.

In Addition, to the central hot desk area, other spaces include; two small private rooms, allowing for a quiet space to concentrate as well as a board room, suitable for video conferencing, conference calls and presentations.

Materials include polished concrete flooring, non-off gassing carpets and timber veneer cabinetry and paneling throughout.

The architectural ceiling makes the central part of the building feel open and spacious with skylights allowing natural light to flood the space. Floor to ceiling windows and interior green walls gives occupants a connection with nature

FOYER

Year: 2018

Considering the activities that take place in a university design studio, this project is a sustainable retrofit intended to enhance the performance a Swinburne building. The design aims to improve user comfort by maximizing natural light, ventilation and providing auditory and thermal comfort in fluctuating weather conditions. Analysis of the site with additional light, sound, air quality and thermal studies provided a deep understanding of the improvements required. The existing floor plan was transformed into a functional yet adaptable space, together with minor alterations of the buildings envelope to provide comfort for users.

Windows added along the north side of the building maximize natural light and provide cross ventilation and allow the floor to act as thermal mass, to absorb and store heat from the sun. Extending existing eaves, coupled with the addition of deciduous vines planted on the northern faรงade, offer shade in changing seasons.

Carefully selected materials include; cork, a natural and renewable resource. Applied on walls and the operable partitions, for its versatile attributes including sound absorbing and insulating properties, whilst also useful for pining up of students work.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB) has been used for all joinery, which are all handle-less in a bid to use less resources.

03 Community Center

Meeting p l ac e Location: Balyang Sanctuary Golf-Course 19-33 Marnock Rd, Newtown VIC 3220 Project Type: Academic Year: 2019

This project responds to increasing rates of loneliness, transforming a golf-course club house into a socially inclusive hub for the community. Whilst being sensitive to the site’s aboriginal heritage, the hub seeks to promote social interaction and is designed to improve user’s health and wellbeing. The exploration of symbolic aboriginal art informed the layout which features clusters of activity with continuous circulation around a central courtyard. The hub provides users with a combination of both physical and mental stimulation, with activity spaces designed to enhance creativity, mental sharpness and strengthen social ties.

The aim of the center is to decrease social isolation in the community through a welcoming environment that encourages interaction with others. The design is mindful of the areas aboriginal heritage and seeks to work around all existing trees. Adapting and extending the current 1991 building, whilst in the interest of the golf club, ensuring the course remains as is.

The concept of the design was inspired through examination of aboriginal artwork. The layout of the hub was informed by the two symbols most commonly used to represent a ‘meeting place’. Applying this notion to the design assisted in creating a place where the community can gather for years to come, helping satisfy our human need to socially interact with others.

The design process was heavily implicated by the experimentation of light and shadows. Implementing skylights throughout the building to flood the interior with natural light and allow the sun to dance on the floor brings movement to the space.

The layout of the center represents togetherness and a sense of community. Individual boxes are each connected by walkways and organized around the central courtyard. Rooms open in different directions to give richness and variation to the spatial experience while also defining the way people circulate.

Accessibility was a guiding factor in the design process, ensuring continuous circulation throughout the building while considering the varied physical capabilities of visitors. Understanding the requirements of potential users, led to a range of activities that accommodate for different abilities.

The nature of the activities offered at the centre are designed to improve physical and mental health, whilst engaging people in a way that supports them to interact with one another.

Moving around the building users will find activities targeted for stress relief, using critical thinking and hand eye coordination.

VENTILATIO

Swinburne Student Hotel

s t ay pod Location: Glenferrie Station, Hawthorn (Swinburne University)

RECESSED LIGHT

Project Type: Academic Year: 2018

A pod hotel located next to the train station at Swinburne University provides short term accommodation or a night’s rest for students working long hours on campus. The concept of the pod is driven by sustainable practices using resources efficiently on the narrow site. A key factor in the overall design is the operable facade shading which evolved through experimentation of light and shadows. Each pod can be easily prefabricated off site nonetheless the small footprint provides students with the necessary elements of a comfortable stay.

The challenge for the facade shading was to provide a comfortable amount of shading in the summer to keep the inside of the building cool but also to not block out all the natural light. In contrast for the winter the building needs to harness heat from the sun so the shading design needed to be operable.

Prototyping the structure gave an understanding of the proposed forms abilities. Stacking a pod with a pitched roof allows for services to be lined in the gap.

Inspired by the leaf structure of a fern the operable shading provides movement of light and shadows throughout the day.

Each pod is simple and contains only a bed and a bench that students can use as a desk off the end of the bed.

Pods are grouped together with shared facility’s on each level.

05 Co - Working / Social Retail

Social s tat i o n Location: 603 Munger Avenue, Dallas, Texas Project Type: Academic / IIDA Competition Year: 2017

Located in Dallas, Texas, the Social Station is a first-of-its-kind co-working space specialized for today’s social retailers. The concept transforms the space into a sanctuary, providing working space, meeting space, lounge space, retail space, as well as a variety of other touchdown areas for personal and hands-on work. Raised platforms and curved pathways create an interior landscape and offer variation in the spatial experience. The layout includes adaptable event space, encourages social interaction and supports well-being in an active and engaging environment.

A combination of real tree trunks with artificial branches and leaves have been plotted throughout, providing users a connection to nature. Organic pathways with contrasting floor surfaces separate each zone and allow for creative collisions between tenants.

The location being the 7th floor provides views of the city and motor way. Plants in the formal and informal working spaces create a peaceful setting, an escape from the city.

Transparent partitions of curved glass walls keep the space open and provide natural night to penetrate to the center on the building, while vertically placed cardboard tubes provide a touch of privacy where needed.

By day the built in seating area is a social space, at night the space has the ability to host events and pop up stores for tenants’ startups businesses.

Thank you.
