In keeping with its pledge to present public, immersive, and multidisciplinary works, Faena Art has commissioned Juan Gatti to design a geodesic dome on the beach. Coral Morphologic, Juan Gatti, Marietta Ren’s first scrolling graphic novel, presented by Film Gate, Rachel Rossin presented by Artsy, Studio Borscht (Lucas Leyva and Jillian Mayer), amongst others. Full program available at www.faenaart.org and Faena Art App.

The Tree of Life The Faena Tree of Life is a site-specific sculpture by Studio Job, specially commissioned for the opening of Faena District Miami Beach. Studio Job was founded in 2000 by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel, both graduates of the venerated Design Academy Eindhoven. Their collaboration has created highly expressive works, a majority of which are one off or limited edition pieces, redefining the applied arts for the contemporary age. Studio Job’s work is widely exhibited in New York, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Milan, Miami, Shanghai, Abu Dhabi and Basel, and its designs are in the collections of more than 40 museums worldwide. Over the past four years, the Antwerp-based design collective has collaborated with Faena on custom symbology that appears on pavement, fences, wallpaper, sculptures, printed material, and banners throughout Faena District Miami Beach. Its commissions also include four gates around the District perimeter, which are constructed from steel and weaved chain link and feature symbols of imagination, life, passion, and transformation—ideas central to the Faena Universe.
The Faena Tree of Life is rooted in a depiction of Alan Faena’s own South American rose garden. But it can mount from the depths of his home, ground up into the free air of the high heavens. Reaching out to embrace the entire Earth, the flourishing tree holds amongst its branches the open realm of the spirit: an ethereal kingdom of plenty and triumphant imagination. Having outgrown his homeland, the Faena Tree dwells calmly between heaven and earth. It is both a symbol of prosperity and a joyous celebration of an uplifting, fruitful path open for us all to follow.
“We are plants which–whether we like to admit it to ourselves or not–must with our roots rise out of the earth in order to bloom in the ether and to bear fruit.” — JOHANN PETER HEBEL
Sacred Geometry Everything in the universe can be measured; creation has a pattern, a divine architecture that determines how nature thrives and the world evolves.
Through logical, sequential data, Sacred Geometry allows us to understand our origins—where we are and where we come from—but most importantly, where we’re going. Richard Buckminster Fuller— architect, designer and inventor—understood this concept and the power that cosmic order has in ruling what can’t be controlled. His geodesic domes seemed to defeat the laws of which they drew from; geometry and physics worked seamlessly to push the boundaries of what seemed possible until then. Fuller was truly a man ahead of his time. His lifelong goal was the development of what he called “Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science”— the attempt to anticipate and solve humanity’s major problems through the highest technology by
providing “more and more life support for everybody, with less and less resources.” The tension and compression of each of his structures create a balance that in some ways reflect that of our world, a dance between the known and the unknown, a pushing and pulling between what we see and what we believe. To explore this notion, Faena Art built a dome on the beach for Miami Art Week 2016, paying homage to the divine by showcasing films and videos created mostly by local production companies. Juan Gatti, the artistic genius who created a lush visual universe for Faena Hotel Miami Beach, has designed the outer skin of the dome. Inside, state-of-the art, 360-degree screening technology will help to create an immersive environment that will challenge space, image and sound as we know it.

CHRISTMAS AT LOS FUEGOS The lights are low, the curtain is a thick velvet of a time gone by and the excitement of the crowd is palpable. A trumpet blasts into the room, the lights flash, and suddenly the show has begun. You don’t hear the bongo drum specifically through the septet orchestra, but you feel it. That feeling runs through your heart and into your soul, pulling you away from the present and luring you into a world of mystery and seduction. The live cabaret showing twice on Fridays and Saturdays at Faena Theater is now adding a new show time on Thursdays. The show is a
throwback to a different era when women wore gloves, men wore hats and live music was the only option. The C’est Rouge! orchestra sits at the heart of the show, and live music sits at the creation of it. “We wanted a live band,” explains Tao Gutierrez, Musical Director of C’est Rouge!, “And we were thrilled to discover that Miami has incredible musicians.” “We relied a lot on the 40s and 50s spirit of Miami and Havana when you would experience live music in the lounges and have cocktails,” Gutierrez continues. “We wanted to evoke that same style and excitement.”
C’est Rouge! at Faena Theater. Thursdays: doors open at 8:30pm, show starts at 9:00pm Fridays & Saturdays: doors open at 8:30pm, show starts at 9:00pm / doors open at 10:30pm, show starts at 11:00pm Tickets are available on www.ticketmaster.com. Inspired by the electric night markets of Southeast Asia, Pao restaurant will transform into a gastronomic display of culinary ingenuity during the Night Market at Faena Hotel Miami Beach from November 29th to December 4th, 2016. The first festival, in what Faena hopes will be an annual event during Art Basel, takes guests on a mouthwatering adventure through a menagerie of vendors serving up casual streetfood-inspired bites. Pao’s celebrated Chef Paul Qui will be at the helm of the food fair, serving up his unique brand of modern Asian cuisine with a blend of Filipino, Spanish, Japanese, and French flavors. Signature specialties include rice plates, crudo dishes and fish and meats cooked table-side over Japanese binchotan charcoal. The Night Market is a juxtaposition of art, music and
culinary arts designed to energize diners through all five senses. Pao’s open-air terrace overlooking the ocean will turn into a neon oasis of colorful lanterns, life-size Buddhas, oriental-style food stalls, and a Bombay Sapphire cocktail bar. Miami’s restaurant roster: Ariete and Baby Jane– focuses on high-quality American classics with a creative slant that gives his fare hearty gusto. “A new heart for a New Year, always!” —CHARLES DICKENS
Faena Bazaar Preview The never-before-seen, OMA-designed Faena Bazaar will play host to a nine-day retail extravaganza overlapping with Miami Art Week. From November 26th to December 8th, 2016. A fusion of top-flight fashion, food and entertainment will fill up the four-story emporium with special events, dinners, shows, parties and exclusive shopping experiences. Curators Kelly Framel and Zachary Lynd of Kizmet have brought together over 20 fashion partners including Maison de Mode, Figue, L’Objet and Carolina K to showcase their most high-concept designs. The event will feature a virtual reality immersive theater experience by Punchdrunk, a Tête-A-Tête Champagne
bar, Limited Edition Tattoo Parlor, a Pedro Friedeberg mural installation, as well as afternoon artist talks and live music performances. Faena Bazaar, which will officially debut next spring, is rooted in the concept of retail as theater with the promise of discovery and meaningful cultural integrations—It’s a true modern souk-inspired by the night markets of Southeast Asia, the opulent treasures of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, the spice markets of India and the bustling souks of Marrakech, mixed with the artistic energy of
art fair tents and a splash of irreverent youth culture. In the words of Alan Faena, “We absorb the world through the treasures we find on our journeys, and in turn, they tell the stories of who we are, where we have been and in what we believe.” A pioneering new paradigm —a mall without walls—the Bazaar is an encampment of emerging talent who have the liberty to dream, experiment and create within the beating heart of Miami Beach’s international artistic community.
On the Art of Embracing New Beginnings The possibility or the obligation to redefine our existence is one of the most natural, humanely beautiful acts. Before the radical and singular event of death, life induces small, timely, necessary deaths to guide us to assume—whether by choice or omission—some of our possibilities. And among these crucial events in our personal histories, there are various types of circumstances. The beginnings and the ends, which are two sides of the same door, are embedded in the extraordinary of the quotidian, in the moments that we take for granted, such as going to sleep and waking up each morning. But to truly feel those potential new beginnings, it is necessary to remember “the forgotten amazement of being alive,” as Octavio Paz put it, and leaving behind the inertia that drags us on, day to day. Perhaps that is why we have created social conventions which are very similar to the cyclical movement of the planet, to the change in season, to our physical evolutions. Each of us has a birthday, and as a whole, a new year and four season changes. Each date is an opportunity to breathe in the air and refocus our gaze. If there is something we have learned over time, it is that human beings need to measure their lives in stages; otherwise, it is very likely they will lose meaning, and their vertigo will be greater, more paralyzing, than their drive to move forward. Our ability to let go is, without a doubt, the most
essential and the most difficult of all, but finds strength in the ceremonies. And the fact that the New Year, for example, is a social consensus, does not make it less real but ever more powerful. When so many people around the world identify a calendar date with the same meaning (in this case a marked end and beginning), this day becomes what we attribute to it. The New Year is already a portal of individual and planetary change, regardless if we have resolutions, and wheter if we fulfill them or not. On January 1st, the world is a little cleaner than the day before, slightly less inert. Without those symbolic cleansings, which infuse us with a little bit of bravery, the daily occurrence of life would lose its motivation along the way—the motivation that, by definition, requires constant renewal. Now, there are moments in each person’s life when ending and recommencing are certain events, and in which life can be heard more clearly than ever. These moments often occur after a breakup, death or a major betrayal. But they may also arise as the result of an urgency to tackle the road we have been ignoring for so long and is palpitating so hard we can no longer postpone it. Sometimes even traumatic events are the opportunity we require for, finally, as Rilke would say—act with
beauty and courage. Each person goes through one of these moments—if not several—and while they can be profoundly painful, they are the exact turning points in our history, and the last call to let go of the life we planned and tried to manipulate at our convenience, and embrace the life that awaits us. Amid these events of tremendous finitude and birth, we have the opportunity not to turn the page as in a birthday, but rather change the book entirely. And we have to stop to breathe. Beginnings are X-rays of endings. Thus, in the liminal space between one thing and another, which might be quite uncomfortable and long, we understand which parts have to be cast away forever and which ones are good foundations for what is to come. That is why we require all the patience and courage that we have foreseen in our spirit; new capacities for compassion and beauty; but mostly we need a sense of lightness and creativity which, although unprecedented in our life, occurs at that time and place because it’s always been there. New reefs and the secret gardens of octopuses are often born in shipwrecks.

the Universe’s intelligence and myself. I’ve always been curious about nature’s mysteries. Back in the day I studied to become an ethnobiologist which helped me understand the significance that the jungle, the desert, and the forest has in indigenous culture—but most importantly, how they’re precious treasures for our survival on this planet. We have lots to learn from the ancient civilizations—follow their beliefs when it comes to living sustainably, eating locally, using natural medicine, social bonding, storytelling and legendary tales, as well as an array of cosmological views. Life is too short to soak all this in. The more we find out about the mysteries and greatness of life, the greater our amazement is, and ignorance fades away. It’s through this process that we create sacred spaces for our wellbeing. Small physical, mental, energetic and spiritual adjustments can help develop us into better persons, achieving a happier life.

POWER OF WELLNESS SPEAKER SERIES
Shamans are born, not made. In indigenous cultures, there are only a few blessed beings that have the gift to understand the mysteries of life, explore the perceptions of different dimensions and read dreams. These revelations are fundamental experiences that allow the shaman to grow. I have personally experienced many revelations through reverie. The shaman is a dreamer and dreaming the sun is a privilege in life. I consider myself a healer. I do it by using massage and anatomical adjustment techniques, sacred plants or temazcal treatments (sweat lodges), the sound of shells, the use of incense and the power of my healing powers to improve the quality of life of my patients. I have walked a long road to learn all of this. I’ve been taught by the indigenous people of México, Latin America, and India; they showed me how to find the balance between wellbeing and health. It’s not an easy feat to embark on this journey, and the challenges keep mounting, but I have learned to trust
