TRIP TO ALQUEZAR On the 13th of March, 2008, 94 students from 1st ESO participated in a trip to Alquézar with their teachers Pilar, Juan Ramón, Reyes, Miriam and Bea. Alquezar is a small village 50km away from Huesca, with about 300 inhabitants on the right bank of river Vero at Sierra de Guara, whose main sight is the Colegiata. So, we left Utebo at 8.30am and then, in Alquézar, students were divided in two groups. Some of them went hiking along the river Vero till the waterfall, while the rest stayed in the village doing some activities like archery or path finding. Then they met at the main square to have lunch all together. Later on, in the afternoon, they did the same but the opposite way round until 5.30 when we came back to Utebo. Students enjoyed a lot and we, the teachers think it is a well-organised activity that could be repeated next year with other students.

TEACHERS IN LONDON LAST WEEKEND (9-11/ FEBRUARY/08) 10 teachers from ‘Pedro Cerrada’ school (Pablo, Luisa, Beatriz, Pilar, Fernando, Jose Miguel, Juan, Asun, Inés and Marga) went to London on a trip organised by Marga, the English teacher in order to improve their English and to get some motivation, as part of the ‘English speaking’ seminar that it is taking place every Wednesday afternoon. Chinese people were celebrating the New Year in London and the atmosphere was very lively, day and night. Some of the teachers arrived the day before and were sightseeing down town and visiting some of the interesting museums. Then we went to Baker Street, where Shaerlock Holmes was supposed to be living, we visited the St Paul’s cathedral and we took the boat along River Thames to visit the ‘Tutankhamun exhibition’, specially lent from Cairo, till August, 08. It is being shown in the 02, the new entertainment area in the previously called Millennium Dome. And then, we went to Covent Garden to have dinner at an English restaurant. It was a flash trip but we all enjoyed a lot and we are ready for another ‘teachers’ trip next year. ( Marga Herrero, the English teacher)

TRIP TO BARCELONA

We will never forget the trip we did to Barcelona on the 13th of March, 2008 with our classmates and other students from 1st Bachillerato. As, one day, our teachers decided to organize a trip for all of us to spent some time together and it is always good to travel and learn about culture in different ways. We were supposed to set off at 7.00am but due to an accident on the motorway, the bus didn’t turn up till 8.00 so after a long journey of 4 hours, we arrived at the Aquarium a bit late. If we had not been delayed we would have had more time to enjoy all the different fish in the aquarium. Anyway, the sharks were amazing and we enjoyed a lot. We had time to do thousands of photos. Then, we were divided into 3 groups. The Arts students went with Inés, Albert and Mª José to visit the Sagrada Familia and ‘La Catedral del mar’, the basilic which inspired the author to write the novel with the same name. There, some students explained the details as if it was an Art lesson. The Social Science students had some time to have lunch at the beach and then, accompanied by Juan, Asún and Marga went to visit the Olympic City which was built for the Olympic Games in 1992. Whereas, we, the Technological students went to the Science Museum after having lunch, with Lina, Guillermo and Manolo. There were a lot of experiments which we could try and we liked the ‘sound’ one. It seemed that we were not the only school on a trip as there were buses and students everywhere just before Easter holidays. After the different activities, we all met again at plaza de Colón and went back to Zaragoza. We only stayed in Barcelona for a few hours so when we arrived at Utebo, it seemed as though we had never been away. To sum up, we enjoyed the trip and would repeat it again in spite of the tiredness and the long journey. It was worth to learn new things and have the opportunity to socialize with our own mates although we would have liked to stay for the night. (by Jesús Martín, Hector Díaz & Ruben Rodríguez from 2nd Tech.

RECYCLING: ‘RUBBISH DUMP’

While the students were on the school trip, some of us went with Silvia Escuer to visit a rubbish dump called ‘clean spot’ in Utebo, as you can see in the photo. There, all the rubbish is thrown to keep our town clean. But you must distinguish what type of rubbish it is in order to classify them: organic rubbish, glass, paper, oils, clothes, electrical devices. It is an interesting place to see and I think everybody should recycle to protect the Earth. (by Verónica from 4th A)

**

VISIT TO A LOCAL NEWSPAPER

We went to visit our local newspaper ‘HERALDO DE ARAGÓN’ on Friday the 11th of April, 2008, organised by the Language Department. The new headquarters are in Villanueva now since their opening in 2003, where they make the newspapers everyday with new technological machines. At the entrance, we met the guide who explained us very interesting things. She showed us a big mural which measures more than 10m long and was made with 5000 different letters from the old times, as they are not used anymore. It is like a big puzzle where we played to find names. Thanks to Gutenberg and his machine the newspapers were born. The Heraldo was founded in 1895 and the name comes from ‘herald’ who used to be a sort of reporter and it was called ‘the broad sheet’ because it was very big. The Director was Antonio Mompeón. There is a museum with old machines and also there is a video show where we learnt some details and how important publicity is for the information business. The reporters though don’t work here but at Independence Street, they send the news before 10pm and here they print 65.000 units every day for which they need about 24 rolls of paper (23.000m. each), that is to say, a lot of paper which hopefully will be recycled. The rotative is very modern and can throw about 70.000 units per hour. It is as big as a 4 store building. How does it work? Firstly, metal pieces are carved with the information and then, those metal pieces are set into a rolling machine which is covered with ink which prints the papers. Four pages go in every metal piece. Anyway, it was interesting to learn about the whole process and finally, we were taken a photo which was published on the 12th,. You can see it down under.
