Cal Golf’s State-of-the-Art Short-Game Facility
n a huge boost for the California men’s and women’s golf programs, the Golden Bears opened their new short-game facility at the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland in the fall of 2007. The Cal athletic department would like to thank everyone who combined to contribute approximately $600,000 to bring the project to fruition. The lead donors were Ed and Mollie Arnold, Ellen and Joffa Dale, Jay deBenedetti, Lon and Becci Haskew, Judy Isaac, and Pat and Kent Newmark. The programs broke ground on the privately-funded project in 2006 after a long planning process. The twoand-a-half acre state-of-the-art short-game facility is conveniently located on the southwest corner of the Metropolitan Golf Links near the Oakland International Airport, approximately 15 minutes from campus. Built to United States Golf Association specifications, the facility features two extremely large greens – one for putting and chipping, and the other for the aerial game, including pitching and bunker play.
“This was a dream of mine and Cal men’s golf for 27 years and for the women’s program since its inception in 1994-95. The facility will help improve our players from 120 yards and in. Both teams can always be more efficient in that area. It will also help in terms of recruiting because it will make us more competitive with the best programs in the country. For the first time, we will also be able to reach out to the community and host golf camps and clinics.” – Men’s Head Coach Steve Desimone

California Golden Bears 2010-11 Men's Golf Annual Report
Outlook BEARS LOOKING TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP After a return to the NCAA Championship for the first time in six years in 2010 and a strong showing in the fall portion of the 201011 campaign where the Golden Bears took a half-stroke off their 2010-11 stroke average, Cal is looking to take the next step in the spring of 2011. Head coach Steve Desimone and his players are dreaming big dreams this year and hopefully into the future. “These guys expect to win, flat out expect to win,” said Desimone. “I don’t care where we are in a tournament, until we sign our scorecards and the tournament is over, if we do anything but finish first it’s a disappointment. That’s where we are with this program and that’s where we want to stay. We’ve had other years and periods like this but now we want to sustain it for a long time and we have the players to do that.” The Bears won two of the five tournaments they played in during the fall of 2010 with back-to-back victories over a 10-day period in October at The Prestige at PGA WEST and the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, the latter hosted by the Bears. Cal was also third at the Windon Memorial Classic, eighth at the U.S. Collegiate Championship and 12th at the season-opening Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. Cal’s first victory of the fall at The Prestige came at the expense of two Pac-10 rivals in Stanford and Washington. The Bears and Cardinal entered the third and final round of action tied for the team lead but Cal outplayed Stanford on the event’s final day and also held off the hard-charging Huskies for

the victory. Ben An (70-73-68 – 211, -5) was Cal’s top individual with a third place overall finish and also had the Bears’ best score in the final round with a four-under par 68. Stephen Hale (71-71-72 – 214, -2) played all three of his rounds either at or below par and finished tied for sixth overall. Max Homa (7270-79 – 221, +5) tied for 23rd, while Michael Weaver (76-75-73 – 224, +8) and Eric Mina (73-75-76 – 224, +8) tied for 32nd. In its next victory Cal (262-266-276 – 804, -48) held off a fierce charge from San Diego State (267-271-276 – 806, -46) at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Cal’s two-shot win came after the Bears had led the Aztecs by 10 strokes heading into the final round. The Bears broke a 54-hole school record in the win and posted the top score in tournament history, blasting the previous record of a 26-under par 826 tally posted by Cal in 2006. The Bears’ first two rounds of 262 and 266 were both better than the tournament’s previous single-round low of 267, established by Cal and Oregon in 2009. An (65-64-69 – 198, -15) continued his outstanding play in his first collegiate season, tying for second with a 15-under par 198 and one stroke behind individual medalist Alex Kang (62-67-68 – 197, -16) of San Diego State. Hale (67-66-66 – 199, -14) took fourth overall. Homa (63-7174 – 208, -5) and Mina (72-65-71 – 208, -5) tied for 16th, while Weaver (67-73-70 – 210, -3) was tied for 29th. Desimone is armed with a 2010-11 lineup that includes both veteran leadership and outstanding young players. Although the Bears have excellent depth, the top players played so well in the first half of the campaign that only six saw action in the fall and five of those accounted for all but three rounds.
Eric Mina An, the youngest person to ever win a U.S. Amateur title at the age of 17 in 2009, is arguably Cal’s most accomplished player prior to the start of his collegiate career. The South Korean native started his rookie season at Cal off with a bang as well, posting the team’s lowest stroke average in the fall at 71.1. He also had three top-10 finishes at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (T-2nd), The Prestige at PGA WEST (3rd) and the Windon Memorial Classic (T-6th). Hale, one of three senior tri-captains along with Mina and John Murphy, continued to be one of the team’s top players in the fall as he posted a 71.6 stroke average that was second on the team. Hale had two top-10 finishes in the fall, taking fourth at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and tying for sixth at The Prestige at PGA WEST to help lead the Bears to team victories on both occasions. Hale played in four of the squad’s five fall events, missing only the Windon Memorial Classic. Homa entered the fall of 2010 fresh off a fantastic summer of amateur golf, where he reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur. The performance was one of eight times Homa finished in the top 10 of an amateur golf event in 2010. He continued the momentum into his senior collegiate season, taking two full strokes off his 2009-10 average for a 71.7 fall mark that was third on the team. His top finish in the fall was a fourth-place show-

ing at the Windon Memorial Classic, while he was also tied for 11th at the Olympia Fields/ Fighting Illini Invitational and tied for 16th at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, where he shot a collegiate career-low round of 63 that was tied for the second-lowest round ever by a Cal player and the lowest ever by a Bear the event. He played in Cal’s top spot in the lineup in each of the first three tournaments in the fall. Mina, a returning All-American and the individual medalist at the 2010 Pac-10 Championship, was solid in the fall with a 72.8 stroke average that was fourth on the team. The senior tri-captain’s best performances came in his last two events when he tied for 16th at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and tied for 20th at the U.S. Collegiate Championship. He shot a second-round 65 at the MacKenzie that tied for the lowest of his collegiate career. Weaver was the other player to receive significant time on the course during the fall, posting a 72.9 stroke average that was slightly above his 72.3 career average. The sophomore finished among the top 45 at each of his five events, with his best a 23rdplace showing at the Windon Memorial Classic. Weaver was coming off a strong finish in the spring of 2010 when he led all Cal players at both the NCAA San Diego Regional (8th) and NCAA Championship (41st). He also had a strong sixth-place effort at the Pac10 Championship and became the first Cal player to ever record top-10 finishes at both the Pac-10 Championship and an NCAA Regional in the same season. His year of amateur golf in 2010 was highlighted by a run at the U.S. Open before finishing four shots from making the Open during a qualifier event in Sacramento. The only other Cal player to see action in the fall was Jamie Coré. The sophomore tied for 78th at the Windon Memorial Classic in his lone event. Although none played in the fall of 2010, the remaining six players on Cal’s roster are certainly capable of helping the Bears. “This is by far the most depth that we have ever had,” said head coach Steve Desimone, now in his 32nd season at the helm. “We have some guys that are very good players, certainly capable of making strong contributions to the team, but haven’t been able to crack the lineup yet. That tells you just how strong this team is, and it’s a wonderful problem to have. We go 9-10 deep and our second five might be good enough to make an NCAA Regional.” The second group of players includes a pair of seniors in tri-captain John Murphy and fifth-year player Evan Derian that were two of the team’s best in previous seasons but have played sparingly since. Murphy was fifth at the 2009 Pac-10 Championship and posted
4
Ben An
Michael Weaver a team-low 72.8 stroke average during the 2008-09 campaign. Derian tied for sixth at the 2008 Pac-10 Championship hosted by the Bears and also posted a 72.8 stroke average the season prior to Murphy putting up the number. Both have used redshirt seasons since their lofty accomplishments, with Derian missing most of 2008-09 due to injury and being granted a medical redshirt while Murphy sat out the 2009-10 campaign to work on his game. The team’s other two returnees are junior Jeff Hamm and sophomore Brandon Hagy. Hamm did not play in the fall, while Hagy

will redshirt the 2010-11 campaign after a strong freshman season a year ago to pursue admission to the Haas School of Business. Of note, Hagy’s redshirt year has been very successful with two amateur wins, including the prestigious New Year’s Invitational in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in early January followed by a win at another prestigious event, the San Francisco City Championship in early March. The freshman class led by An also includes Joël Stalter (Amneville, France/INDP HS) and Ben Mangum (Montgomery, AL/The Montgomery Academy). Stalter has been one of the top young amateurs in Europe in recent years, ranking as high as No. 11 in the French Amateur rankings. Mangum was one of the school-record six Cal golfers to play in the U.S. Amateur last season and is the first player to ever walk on and make the roster at Cal. The 12-player group will start the 2011 spring slate January 31 – February 1 looking to defend its title at the Arizona Intercollegiate played at Tucson National. The Bears then fly halfway across the Pacific Ocean for the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which will be played at a new venue this season February 16-18. Both the Arnold Palmer and George Fazio courses of the Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku will be utilized. Cal will return to the mainland February 28 – March 1 for the USC Collegiate Invitational at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village and travel to Las Vegas to play against an always-challenging field March 11-13 in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. The Bears will then have an extended break that will last nearly four weeks before resuming action at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at the ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe (Apr. 9-10), before closing out the regular season the following week at the Western Intercollegiate played at Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz (Apr. 16-17). The Pac-10 Championship where Mina will attempt to defend his 2010 title and the Bears will try to improve upon their tied for sixth place finish a year ago is scheduled to be played Apr. 29 – May 1 in the Bay Area at the Stanford University Golf Course. NCAA postseason competition begins with Regional action at a site yet to be determined May 19-21. A top-five Regional finish at one of the six NCAA Regional sites would put the Bears back in the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive campaign. Cal was 23rd at the NCAA Championship last season while making its first appearance at the event since winning a national title in 2004. The 2011 NCAA Championship will be hosted by Oklahoma State at Karsten Creek in Stillwater and runs May 31 – June 5.
Coaching Staff
STEVE DESIMONE Head Coach 32nd Season • Cal, 1970
Head coach Steve Desimone is in his 32nd season at the helm of the Cal men’s golf team in 2010-11. The 2010 calendar year was a banner year for Desimone that was capped when he was one of seven members of the class of 2010 inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame during the Reception and Awards Banquet at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas on December 6. Desimone’s 2009-10 Cal squad was his best since the Golden Bears won the 2004 NCAA title as Cal returned to the NCAA Championship for the first time since winning the crown for the only time in school history six seasons earlier. The rejuvenation of the program that began a few years ago displayed solid results in 2009-10 with a 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Championship and a tie for third place at the NCAA San Diego Regional. But the postseason successes of the team weren’t the only highlights of the campaign. Cal posted three regular-season victories to tie a school record, winning at the Spartan Golf Classic, the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and the Arizona Intercollegiate. Several individuals also had great accomplishments in 2009-10, highlighted by the Pac-10 individual medalist honors won by Eric Mina as he became only the second Cal men’s golfer to win the event in its 52year history. Mina also won at the Spartan Golf Classic, while Stephen Hale captured the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Michael Weaver became the first Cal player to finish in the top 10 at both the Pac-10 Championship and NCAA Regionals, tying for sixth and taking eighth, respectively. The team’s momentum continued into summer amateur events and then the fall portion of the 2010-11 campaign. The six Bears – Ben An, Jamie Coré, Max Homa, John Murphy, Ben Mangum and Eric Mina – that qualified for the U.S. Amateur last August set a Cal record and were more than any other school
in the country. An, an incoming freshman who graduating from Cal, Desimone left Berkeley had become the event’s youngest winner ever to become the Director of Athletics at the Colat the age of 17 in 2009, reached the 2010 lege Preparatory School in Oakland where semifinals while attempting to defend his title. he remained until 1988. Cal’s success that season helped Desimone win Pac-10 Conference Co-Coach of the Year. During the outstanding 1989-90 campaign, Desimone brought the Bears' golf program to an unprecedented level. The team earned its first berth in the NCAA Championship in 26 seasons. Cal competed in the 1964 NCAA Championship, but didn’t earn its first actual berth until 1990, two years after the NCAA switched to a selection/qualifying format. Cal played in 13 tournaments that year, placing among the top 10 in all but two, including three team titles and a tie for third place at the Pac10 Championship. In addition, the Bears were ranked among the top-25 teams in the nation throughout the season. Furth, the school’s first All-American in men’s golf and a member of the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame, was a major contributor to the Bears’ success that year. The following season came to a disappointing conclusion for Desimone and the Bears. A career-ending back injury to Furth brought to an end the hope that 1990-91 would surpass Cal’s great season the preceding year. Off the course, however, another important step in the rebuilding of the Cal golf program was undertaken. With the generous support of the Cal Golf Committee, a minimal amount of financial aid was offered to incoming student-athletes for the first time in 15 years. This was a critical step because it finally demonstrated the Bears were committed to competing nationally in all respects. The 1994-95 season stands as the second best in the history of Cal golf. The Bears finished second to Arizona State at the Pac-10 Championship, being selected for their third NCAA Regional berth in six years. Cal came up with a sixth-place showing at an NCAA Regional hosted by New Mexico in Albuquerque to qualify for the NCAA Championship and then was sixth again at the national event hosted by Ohio State in Columbus. Wi led the way as Cal's first Pac-10 individual champion and a first-team All-American. Wi is currently in his sixth year on the PGA Tour in 2011, while Tomasulo is in his second. Desimone is the former Manager of the University of California Golf Club, a 130-member Associate Club of the Northern California Golf Association, and a former member of the Ping Advisory Committee for college golf. He has served twice on the NCAA Pacific Region Selection Committee for the NCAA Western Regional (1991-93, 2002-04) and also served on the campus-wide NCAA Self-Certification Committee in the mid-90s. Desimone lives in Orinda with his wife, Linda. They couple has two children. Kim graduated in 2006 from Cal Poly and is now working in special events for the Reno Aces, the AAA affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Robert, a 2008 graduate of Northern Michigan, is the promotions director for Academy Sports + Outdoors in Houston.

Q&A WITH COACH DESIMONE
How did you schedule your events and the level of competition in 2010-11?
“We knew well before the season started that we would be a nationally competitive team this year with the outstanding players we had returning and the arrival of Ben An. We thought that we could be one of the top 10 or top 15 teams in the country throughout the regular season and give ourselves the opportunity to compete for another national championship. When you look at the schedule, our plan was to play nationally in the best tournaments we could find both in the fall and spring. We scheduled a little bit more travel than we ordinarily would so that our guys could play against different teams and different players. We wanted our players to know that when we got to the postseason we weren’t going to be taking a back seat to anybody. We wanted them to know that not only could we play with these teams but that we could beat them. We certainly proved that in the fall. The tough schedule is by design and so far it’s worked perfectly. The way the spring schedule sets up there is a little more time than usual between each tournament, and this allows for two things that we didn’t have in the fall. First, we will have more time to practice, and second, we will have more time for consistent qualifying.”
How would you assess your team’s play in the fall of 2010?
“The plan was to play solid competitive golf in the fall and then be able to use that as a springboard for confidence and momentum in the spring. We wanted to be able to take what we did in the fall and then identify the areas that might make the difference between winning a national championship and being just another great team. Our fall competition this year has really worked in our favor. Every one of our players during their evaluations at the end of the fall agreed with our analysis of their games and the team. They have a very clear understanding of what they need to do to improve. If we can achieve that improvement, then we’re going to have one heck of a spring.”
What is it like to have the type of veteran leadership and talented youth that you have on this club? “When you have four seniors like Evan Derian, Stephen Hale, Eric Mina and John Murphy who have played at the highest levels of collegiate golf with great success, those are great role models for guys like Ben An and Joël Stalter, who have had great success in amateur golf. All of these guys know how to play, they know how to compete, and they know how to succeed. That’s a wonderful mix and much on which to build.”
What worries you the most about the 2010-11 team? “Keeping everybody healthy and being healthy at the right time, and finishing spring exams well before the NCAA Regional competition.”
How significant is it that Cal players are making significant inroads in amateur golf? “We had a school-record six players qualify for the U.S. Am last summer, which was the most of any school in the country. Our guys clearly worked on some of things we wanted them to work on when they left school last spring. They had great summers and then brought their improvements back to our team in August. The improvements they made worked in their favor individually as well as in our favor as a team. What’s really critical for a coaching staff is when players understand and don’t resist what they need to do to improve. When we’re all on the same page and combine that with the work ethic our guys have, their improvement will be obvious and substantial.”
What does it mean to play golf at Cal? “It means you’ve made a commitment to the University of California and to the golf program to be the best student, the best player and the best person you can be. All of those things work together. There’s a great deal of pride our players have in the program. They also understand that they’re part of a legacy and they want to leave a legacy, something that will be a part of this program forever. When your players are thinking like that, then you know they’ve had a great experience. As a coaching staff, those are some of the hopes and goals we have for our players.”
What did the return to the NCAA Championship to cap the 2009-10 season do for the players’ confidence? “I think every athlete in every sport at some point questions themselves as they go up higher and higher in terms of competition. Do I really belong? Am I good enough? Am I the type of player that can hit the right shot and sink that putt at the right time? Can I do all of the things that it takes to be a great player and play for a great team? Last spring validated that for a bunch of our guys who were young players, many whom were still growing into the highest levels of collegiate and amateur golf. They were considered good players, but not yet elite players. However, when you play at the NCAA Championship you become an elite player. When you have success at major amateur events the way Ben An, Stephen Hale, Max Homa and Eric Mina have had, you are an elite player. You can see success breeds confidence, and these

guys flat out expect to win now. I don’t care where we are in a tournament, until we sign our scorecards and the tournament is over, if we do anything but finish first it’s a disappointment. That’s where we are with this program and that’s where we want to stay. We’ve had other years and periods like that, but now we want to sustain this for a long time and we have the players to do that.”
they’re doing now, then an objective person might say that, so far, things have gone very well. We’re always trying to do it better, we’re always trying to improve but we’ve had a lot of great times, a lot of big laughs, and a lot of wonderful stories. I think when you put all of that together then just maybe we’ve done a few things right and we’re going to keep doing it that way.”
Can you describe your coaching style? “I’ve always thought of myself coaching in terms of the overall student-athlete experience at Cal. I’m certainly a different coach than I was 25-30, even 15-20 years ago. That basically stems from the fact that building this program was not easy, especially with no scholarships and no housing at the beginning. My coaching style now is much more laid-back simply because we have better athletes and better students that are more committed and want to compete at the highest levels of collegiate and amateur golf. In the end, we’re trying to provide the best student-athlete experience for our players. We want to do everything we can to help them develop into the best players they can be for this program, and if they decide to move on in the game when they finish, to be prepared for those next steps. I think we do a really good job of setting a foundation for our players, setting goals, giving them every opportunity to prove themselves, to develop as players, and within that context we want to work as hard as we possibly can. But we also want to have fun. One of the things that we tell our recruits and families is that we start every day with humor and chocolate. If you can understand both the symbolism and practical side of that perspective, then you can understand why [associate head coach] Walter [Chun] and I have been such a great team and what our overriding philosophy is. Life has its interesting twists and turns, great moments and difficult times, but if you can enjoy life that’s the chocolate part and if you can do it with a sense of humor that’s the fun part. If you look at the players that have come out of our program over the years and what

How are you able to practice on so many fantastic golf courses? “To have a nationally competitive golf program, you have to have great golf courses open their doors to you. We are so fortunate that this has been the case since I became head coach in 1979. We play so many great golf courses and the number has just increased over the years. It allows us to identify the players who are playing the best and are most ready to play each event, and it also helps tremendously in recruiting. When recruits know we are playing some of the best courses in Northern California, coupled with the short game facility, that’s a pretty good combination. It has certainly worked to our advantage over the years.”
Can you talk about the importance of the Cal Golf Committee?
Can you discuss the importance of the Metropolitan Golf Links short game facility in Oakland? “You can’t play golf if you don’t have the golf courses and facilities, and without a doubt one of the most important components of both the men’s and women’s programs here at Cal is the short game facility at Metro. It opened three years ago, and it has paid dividends for both programs. It allows our players to hit virtually almost every shot they need to hit from 120 yards in. It’s been fabulous, and the incredible improvements both teams have made in our short games have been obvious statistically and in competition.”

“There should be no doubt that without the committee and guys like Frank Brunk, Ed Arnold, Ken Lloyd and so many other Cal people, there would not be a Cal golf program. This was all the Cal Golf Committee. Yes, I’ve been the coach for 31 ½ years and from a programmatic standpoint I can say with a smile that things have gone well, but without the support of the Cal Golf Committee and its energy, none of this would have ever happened, and what a loss that would have been. No Peter Tomasulo, no Charlie Wi, no Ben Furth, no Walter Chun, no national championship, no All-America Scholars, and on and on. To think that none of this would have existed at Cal is an awful, tragic thought. I don’t know that we’ll ever win another national championship, but I do know we’re going to be competing for more and I do know that our student-athletes are getting a great education. They’re playing really good golf and they’re growing as people. All of that runs directly back to the Cal Golf Committee. It’s one of the truly great success stories in the history of Cal Athletics.”

GCAA Hall of Fame Inducts Steve Desimone dESIMONE jOINS 2010 iNDUCTION cLASS OF Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame
Cal head coach Steve Desimone was one of seven members of the 2010 class inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America's Hall of Fame Class on December 6 at the GCAA Hall of Fame Reception and Awards Banquet at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. "There are a lot of great people and great coaches in college golf's Hall of Fame, and many of them are the ones who really built college golf into the great sport that it is today," said Desimone upon his induction. "To be included in that group makes me smile and is something that will stay with me forever." "It's still soaking in," added Desimone. "It's one of the two highest honors anyone can receive in this profession Left: GCAA President and BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank presents Steve Desimone with his Hall of Fame plaque. along with winning an NCAA championship. There's no doubt that when you're selected by your peers for the Hall of Fame the respect that they show for the work you've done is very gratifying. It's an absolutely wonderful honor." Others in the class included coaches Bob Alpers (Saint John's, Minn.), Kyle Blaser (Oklahoma City), Michael Carlisle (South Carolina-Aiken), Bobby Cornett (Texas Wesleyan) and Floyd Horgan (Brevard CC/ Centenary). Additionally, Ron Balicki of Golfweek was inducted for his contributions to college golf. Desimone was also quick to thank the Cal Golf Committee upon his Hall of Fame induction. "This has been an incredible team effort to get Cal golf reinstated to varsity status and build it into a national-level program," said Desimone. "Cal Golf Committee Chairman Frank Brunk and I had a shared vision about the program back to 1980. When I think of the Cal Golf Committee and all of the wonderful people who’ve made this vision come true, this has been an amazing team effort. They've all been part of the team that's helped me become a part of this honored Hall of Fame. I want to thank everyone that has helped, including all of the great players that have come through here over the last 31-plus years, because it never would have happened without them."
