DBX, INC
Sharpens Their Competitive Edge with Purchase of New Yanmar Vi035-6A Mini Excavator from Volvo Construction Equipment & Services
DBX, Inc. (DBX) started as an electrical contracting company in 1964 when founder, Jim R. Perry, recognized the importance and future growth opportunity in the roadway electrical business. The company soon began to specialize in designing and installing traffic signals, street lighting, and runway lighting. By 1994, DBX started recognizing the importance of moving into fiber optics, wireless technology and traffic management centers. They began following the integration of these rapidly expanding technologies as they robustly transitioned into the cutting-edge world of intelligent transportation systems. Now, with nearly 60 years of experience, DBX has the knowledge, capability, and dedicated team members to install, maintain, renovate and repair all intelligent transportation systems (ITS) configurations.
Tim Seaman is an electrician/ project manager for DBX and has worked for the company for nearly seven years. “Building and maintaining traffic signals has been the bread and butter of our business for nearly six decades. At DBX, we can design and build complete traffic control systems. We can also integrate an entire IT infrastructure from design to completion for any size project,” says Seaman. “Whether you are Caltrans, a city, municipality, or other agency, our talented crews are ready to install everything from street lighting, freeway management systems, and any other electrical roadway infrastructure, including fiber optics. Our ITS system components include everything from fiber optic video and data systems to infrared and sonic

detection systems to loop sensors and solar power systems. We know this business from A to Z and welcome any and all challenges.”
DBX is currently on a large project in Los Angeles located around the I-10 freeway from Highway 1 in Santa Monica, along the 405 and 110 freeways, and extending to the I-5 freeway. DBX is installing ramp meters on this project, which are traffic signals on freeway on-ramps that control the frequency of vehicles entering the traffic flow. “Along with modifying ramp meters, we are also installing CCTV, DMS signs and structures, and fiber optics over around 12 miles of roadway,” says Seaman. “These installations require a lot of pull boxes and conduit, which we are digging at depths of 3 to 5 feet depending on the application.”
DBX is utilizing eight crew members on the 12-mile freeway project, and they are fortunate to have their brand new Yanmar Vio35-6A mini excavator onsite for the excavating duties. “We recently took delivery of our new Yanmar mini excavator from Volvo Construction Equipment & Services and are using it for the first time on this I-10 freeway project. Our operator is already reporting to us on how powerful this Yanmar is, and he loves the quick coupler. I can tell you that the Yanmar has already sped up production, enabling our crew to move along quickly on this project,” continues Seaman.
Above & Right: Volvo Construction Equipment & Services offers Yanmar Mini Excavator from 10.3 hp and 2,348 lbs. to 72 hp and 21,550 lbs. The Yanmar Zero Tail Swing Mini Excavators come with SmartAssist technology, legndary power and durability and are available with ROPS or enclosed cabs and many other options.
“Before purchasing the Yanmar, we would rent a machine with or without an operator. The time came when it just made more sense to own a mini excavator. We had worked with Aaron Anderson from Volvo Construction Equipment & Services in the past, and he has always treated us right. We look forward to adding more Yanmar mini excavators in the future.” DBX has several crews and is also currently working on a job in Fallbrook for the County of San Diego. They work at two separate intersections on this project, installing traffic signal foundations, conduit, pull boxes and wire poles.
Yanmar compact excavators offer industry-leading technology and incredible efficiency to help the contractor work harder and smarter. These mini excavators come with Tier 4 certified world renowned Yanmar engines, true tail-swing maneuverability, and a 4-year/4,000-hour warranty.
