For more than 172 years, the Calcutta mill has been weaving luxury fabrics for window blinds, wall and floor covering. Calcutta is the oldest weaving mill in Belgium, based in the heart of Europe with a history since 1848. Calcutta has a global reputation in the industry to be an expert in weaving fabrics combining exceptional beauty with high technical performance.

Calcutta’s design studio is known all over the world for its skills in design and development of sophisticated fabrics. The studio is pulling together what’s desirable from a human point of view (emotions) with what is technologically feasible and economically viable. Our design studio’s creatitivty is based on combining aestethics (design, colour, structure, the feel and touch) with technical innovation as for example light and temperature management, different transparancies, blackout/opaque through lamination, acoustic values, fire retardancy, water- and dust repellent treatments, virus- and bacterial-reducing treatments, etc. It also takes into account the priority of reducing our ecolological footprint and manufacturing in a sustainable way.

Precisely this valuable merge of “beautiful” and “technical” decorative fabrics influences your senses and emotions and can contribute to your well being and cocooning. Our fabrics can make you feel relaxed and zen, have an impact on your health and make you happy in your living spaces.

Contemporary construction uses larger portions of glass with interiors requiring wide width roller blinds. Calcutta is the specialist in extra large wide width fabrics for windows blinds.

Calcutta offers a great decorative alternative for today’s world market in screens and roller blinds. Calcutta’s roller blind fabrics are totally different and unique through their high decorative value, acoustic and technical performance and last but not least their minimal ecological footprint.

Have you ever felt deeply moved by the sight of ripples on a calm, quiet lake? Or flocks of birds making patterns in the sky at sunset? Or the wind rustling through cherry blossoms in spring? Then you’ve probably experienced yūgen—even if you didn’t know it. Yūgen is a word that has no translation in English, but it is a feeling we will all have felt. It has been loosely summed up as “an awareness of the universe that triggers emotional responses too deep and powerful for words”, but has

also been called “mysterious grace”, “subtle profundity” and the “beauty of the unseen”.

“It doesn’t describe beauty itself, but it describes the feeling that you have when you see something beautiful, or hear something profound; It’s felt with the heart, not seen with the eyes.” It’s said to have come from Chinese philosophy, in which it meant “dim”, “deep” or “mysterious”, and is an important principle of the traditional Japanese Aesthetics movement in art and culture.
