Living greater at Saint Joseph’s. That’s the magis.
sju.edu/magis
Magis: it’s about living greater. What’s magis? It’s a Jesuit principle that underlies everything we do at Saint Joseph’s. Magis inspires us to think more broadly, work a little harder, and make the most of our God-given talents. More simply stated, magis means making each choice – and therefore each day – better than the last. When Saint Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), one of the first things he did was establish schools, colleges, and seminaries all over Europe. With others. For others. 500 students give back each week. Service is one of the key elements of a Jesuit education. Though it’s not a graduation requirement, hundreds of Saint Joseph’s students serve every week. And hundreds more participate in our service immersion and service learning programs. In the Jesuit tradition, service is about more than just helping others; it’s standing with them.
The City of Brotherly
Philadelphia:
There are two Campus Ministry programs especially designed for first-year students. IGNITE is an overnight, off-campus experience where students get to know one another and ease their transition to college. The other is MAGIS, a yearlong, studentled service and social justice program. Each week, students serve at different community organizations and learn about the social justice issues that are addressed at each one.
One of our most popular travel programs is the Appalachian Experience. Every spring break, over 400 SJU students volunteer to work on Habitat for Humanity sites in Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. Other teams have served communities in New Orleans, Guatemala, Ecuador and El Salvador.
Faith-Justice Studies Faith-Justice Studies allows you to design an interdisciplinary curriculum that augments your major with questions of faith and social justice. Our Faith-Justice Study Series focuses on current social justice issues, including Food and Justice, Ethics and Global Economics and Environmental Justice.
Philly is fantastic for students. Philadelphia has always been a place for freedom. Political. Religious. Ideological. That’s why The City of Brotherly Love is so welcoming and culturally diverse, which is perfect when you’re looking for something new to think about – or to eat. But that’s just the beginning. With many Fortune 500 companies, Philadelphia is ideal for internships and career exploration. ME

The Hawk will never die! That’s the SJU battle cry. You see, the Hawks have a proud tradition of basketball, regularly advancing to post-season play. Recently, both the men’s and women’s teams made it to their respective NCAA tournaments.
It’s about doing more – for yourself and for others. Don’t expect to sit around your dorm room. Hawks tend to be doers – and there is no shortage of Hawk pride around here. You’ll have all kinds of opportunities to explore your interests, express yourself and apply what you’re learning. If you’re not amazed by what you’re doing, you’re missing out.
MORE THAN 100 STUDENT CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS Saint Joseph’s fields 20 varsity teams that compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic 10 Conference and the Philadelphia Big 5. SJU takes on the world. Be prepared to get involved. SJU students speak up in the classroom, do research, study abroad and apply what they’re learning through internships, co-ops and service-learning. Internship or Co-op – what’s the difference? Co-ops are full-time paid positions, where you’ll alternate semesters working and going to classes. Internships can be part- or full-time, paid or unpaid. And they’re usually scheduled around your classes. sju.edu/co-op Summer is another opportunity. Our Summer Scholars spend the season diving into special research or creative projects. They receive stipends and work closely with professors. sju.edu/ssp
