Incomplete. Unfinished. Inchoate. What was once a horizon of famous church steeples, high rise buildings and gigantic oak trees is now riddled with steel cranes with little progress to show for it. This concrete ‘Earthquake Museum’ is a sympathetic gesture to the current state of Christchurch’s city centre. Depicting common motifs of a derelict and incomplete city, the architecture imitates the funereal experience that one encounters when venturing into central Christchurch and its depressing state.

A visit to the shopping mall was once an enticing idea. As if made famous by Avril Lavigne’s 2002 music video, Complicated, shopping malls became a symbol of big cities and material luxury. What was once a place for flirting teenagers, bottomless curry and endless queues is now far from the ecosystem that it once was. This project addresses the problems that the Linwood shopping mall faces and attempts to reinvent the idea of these shopping precincts. Using Le Corbusier as obvious inspiration, the architecture mixes shopping with leisure before dipping it in a coat of fun and sun.

As one of the most enigmatic and underappreciated architects of the 20th Century, Carlo Scarpa’s attention to detail is almost unmatched among modern architects. His appreciation of materials and craft often led him to revel in the smallest of details. This project saw the recreation of Scarpa’s Tomba Brion in a physical model in order to understand his work beyond the portrayal of any pictures. Scarpa’s famous 11cm grid proved to be a suitable challenge at a 1:100 scale.
