TEACHING BASIC HANDGUN IN CALIFORNIA

WORDS: HEATHER ALLEN PHOTOS COURETESY: HEATHER ALLEN

My name is Heather Allen and I am an NRA Certified Handgun instructor serving Orange and Los Angeles County. I did not grow up shooting firearms but fell in love after my husband, a Navy veteran and Sheriff Deputy, started taking me consistently.

In 2017 I began working for the California Rifle and Pistol Association as an Outreach Advocate. I learned so much during my years with the CRPA, for instance, there are eight to ten million gun owners in this state. Think of what could happen if we all banded together and voted in FAVOR of our Second Amendment right? I also learned how often Americans are SAVED by guns every year.

Word began to spread about my job and I started getting phone calls from friends asking if I could teach them how to shoot. Then I began receiving phone calls from friends of friends saying things like “So and so mentioned you know a lot about guns. My husband just bought one for Christmas and I have no idea how to use it. I think it’s called a Glack?” I remember telling this woman, “I’ll be right there!”

After a while I started thinking to myself that there truly was a need for a female firearm instructor in my area. I took all the NRA classes needed to get certified in basic handgun. And BOOM, High Caliber Firearms Training and Education was created! I am happy to say I have helped over 250 people become safe and responsible gun owners.

One of my favorite parts of being an instructor is having a woman begin the lesson SHAKING with fear, to ending the class with a huge smile on their face and asking “When can we do this again?” An even greater feeling is when I get a picture sent to me of their first firearm purchase. It makes me feel like I am contributing to the safety of my clients.

Hands down the worst part of my job is when a client asks me how they can obtain their Concealed Carry Permit. If they are a resident of Los Angeles County, I have to be the bearer of bad news and inform them that, unfortunately, their Sheriff and Police Chief not only will not allow them to Conceal Carry, they are actively revoking legally obtained permits now. In my opinion this is completely unconstitutional.

In contrast, just a hop over to Orange County, you now have a 98% success rate to attain a Concealed Carry Permit. There are over 20,000 Orange County residents putting their safety into their own hands daily. I thank my lucky stars that I live in a County with a Pro Second Amendment Sheriff. It has opened my eyes to realizing I would absolutely never live in Los Angeles County again solely because of this reason. Once you have a right, it is difficult to imagine being forced to live without it.

Overall, my hope is that people who are scared to shoot for their first time will have the confidence in themselves to try at least once. And if they should find that they actually enjoy shooting, my wish is that they will also not be scared to tell others that they had a positive experience with firearms. My advice to gun enthusiasts is to offer to take new shooters to the range. You might be surprised how just one person can change many minds surrounding our Second Amendment Right!

1. TREAT EVERY FIREARM AS IF IT WERE LOADED Imagine you’re at a friends place and a buddy of yours has a new gun that he just picked up. He asks if you want to see it and you say “Heck ya!”. Even if he shows you that the gun is clear and sets it down, the first thing you should always do when you pick it up is to safety-check it. Always double check, awlays!

2. NEVER POINT A FIREARM AT ANTYHING YOU ARE NOT

WILLING TO DESTROY If you’ve done your safety-check and are absolutely sure that your gun is unloaded, that does not give you the go-ahead to be careless with it. Remembering the first rule, The Gun Is ALWAYS Loaded, you should never point it toward anybody. Always be conscious of where you are aiming.

3. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY

TO FIRE When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.

4. BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEHIND IT Bullets can go through – and beyond – your intended target. Knowing what’s behind your target is an essential step to safety and responsibility.

QUICK TIPS

EYES &

EARS

Inside most shooting facilities both eye and ear protection are required, and where they are not, it’s a good idea to wear both at all times. Our eyes are vulnerable to a number of potential hazards, such as flying parts or particles, while shooting, handling or cleaning a firearm. Just like the eyes, ears are just as important to protect. Research has overwhelmingly shown that exposing unprotected ears to a single gunshot can cause a degree of permanent hearing loss. This is why it is important to wear hearing protection at all times when participating in, or within the proximity of shooting.

DRY FIRING ////// What is dry fire practice? For those of shot is “dry”. Newer firearms, however, you who are new to the concept of dry are typically dry-fire friendly and if you fire, it’s training/practicing with a real are really worried, use snap caps. Think firearm, but without live ammunition, about it... The only way to get good Dry firing is simply pulling the trigger at something is to practice. While the of a firearm without live ammunition range is always a great way to practice in the chamber. Since the chamber is with our current COVID-19 situation, this empty, nothing will go off and hence the is a great alternative.

SNAP CAPS Snap caps are made to protect your firearms by relieving the stress on your firing pins and firing pin springs. This will help prevent firing pins from breaking in the future. Snap caps are also a great tool to practice dry firing your guns to teach safe gun handling, improve your shooting skills, and tune your trigger. There are many brands and colors available in different calibers online or at your LGS.
