ABOUT THE PEOPLE

A big welcome to all the new readers, many thanks to all the people who pre-ordered this issue, and to the peepz who sold out the premier issue. Yeah, we are a bit late, but you know what they say. In this issue, we bring you our feature cover with a build from the guys over at Rifle Supply. These guys are definitely blowing it up here in SoCal and pushing out some dope stuff, so go on over to their IG and check them out. They teamed up with C10 Era to do a colormatched AR15 and Glock 19. Adding to that already sick duo is Erika Young, whose classic Cali look, sets this issue off right. We’ve got even more heat in this issue with a custom gold AK47, pimped-out engraved 1911’s, and unique AR15’s, all from F1-Firearms.

We got the story on how they came about from Texas with some badass firearms. We’ve got Raven Wing Tactical throwing down some performance-based training along with Mo’s classic Chevelle with the gorgeous “Jo” spinning his wheels and handling his one-of-a-kind shooter. There’s a large gun culture in California, but unfortunately, it is mostly underground. This is mainly due to the strict gun laws here, but we are on a mission to change that! Many gun people may say “California sucks”. Well, when it comes to certain things, yes, we agree. But that doesn’t mean we are going to give up, rollover, and obey. Fuck that! We are going to show the world that we set trends here in California. We always have and always

will, bet. We will bring you the inventors who live in this harsh 2A environment yet continue to push the envelope in innovating new products, builds, and brands. Along the way, we aim to showcase some of the sickest builds in the country and world for that matter. So jump on in and check out Issue #001. As for future issues, we will continue to step up our game to bring you a new and modern perspective on the firearms scene. From training, hunting, and sick builds to the people behind these great companies, we are all a part of this strong 2A community!

ASPIRING PEWFESSIONAL Hello all and welcome to issue 001 of CALGUNR Magazine! I guess I’m supposed to introduce myself to our readers, so please bear with me - I can’t seem to stop talking until I’m asked to do something like this or complete another new dating profile, then all of a sudden, I’m silent. Well, I guess I should start at the beginning, like a normal person… I’m a SoCal native, the I.E., to be exact, and thanks to the fact that I was a teen mother, I have stayed put because nothing is more important to me than providing a safe and somewhat normal life for my three offspring, and the city in which I live is pretty Shire-esque, if you’re a Lord of the Rings fan you get the reference. I am not only thankful for them every day, but for baby daddy [aka ex-husband] as well – it was he who re-sparked the firearm interest in me. When we began dating, shooting was something we sometimes did together, and I loved every minute of it… and it wasn’t just because I was better at it than him *wink wink* We also taught our kids at a young age to respect firearms, as well as how to handle them. The love of guns runs deep with my boys, and I can’t say I’m the slightest bit bothered by that!

I can’t talk guns without also mentioning why I wasn’t ‘afraid’ like the other women I once knew…my grandmother was the strongest woman I have ever known, [her nickname was hammer, just to give you an idea], and I distinctly remember visiting her when she was living alone as a woman in her late 70’s, maybe even early 80’s; and why didn’t she fear living alone? Because she stayed strapped. I like to think my grandfather’s time in the military had a bit to do with it. She will always and forever be an absolute inspiration to me, and I knew even back then that as bada** as she was, I could be too…so, if she weren’t afraid, why on earth would I be? Alright, let’s get to what I’m sure you’re also wondering – how did I get involved in the magazine world if I’m just a single mom slaving away in the harsh, climate controlled, white collar side of the construction industry? That happens to be where this story turns into something out of a cheesy ‘single mom success movie.’ Through my involvment in a few movements, I spent the majority of the dumpster fire that was 2020 partaking in a fair amount of activism throughout Southern California. While at events, gatherings, rallies and so on – and even while traveling to them –

J U G G E R N A U T F E AT U R E L E S S G R I P Because California seems to have some sort of vendetta against certain “features,” the Juggernaut featureless grip can help make your AR-15 Cali compliant by removing that so-called evil pistol grip. This featureless grip also allows operators to keep their magazine release - California also has some sort of inferiority complex ‘triggered’ by high-capacity magazines not only do they have a 10-round restriction but must also be fixed if you don’t go featureless. Does this make sense? Absolutely not, but that is just where we are at right now.

TRAUMA PACK 101 FAILING TO PREPARE IS PREPARING TO FAIL! WORDS: STAFF PHOTO: COURTESY TRAUMAPAK You’re driving back home from your favorite gun store and you couldn’t be any happier. You just picked up your fifth firearm and some extra ammo. You already have a few holsters at home and you’re waiting for your new weapon light to arrive in the mail. You have been training with your other firearms for years now and have attended multiple training classes. Out of all the people you know you feel the you are the most prepared to protect your family‘s life. But then the unimaginable happens. You are at a red light and witness a car collide with a motorcyclist causing him to launch off his motorcycle landing on the side of the road with his leg partially amputated. You jump out of your car to help him, but at that point you realize you’re truly not prepared to deal with this type of emergency. The harsh reality is that when it comes to firearms and trauma kits, you are more likely going to need a trauma kit then to use your firearm. Trauma is the leading cause

of death in the United States between the ages of 0 and 45 years. While we definitely cannot heal all traumatic injuries in the field, there are four (4) preventable causes of death due to trauma that no one should die from in this day and age, and yes, you as a civilian can treat them. If your trauma kit does not have the necessary equipment to address these injuries AND you do not possess the training to deal with these injuries, then you are preparing to fail. These four preventable causes of death are: major uncontrolled bleeding from the extremities, neck, groin or armpits (major arteries run through all of these areas), Airway compromise or obstruction, chest injuries and hypothermia. TraumaPAK is a first responder owned medical company that builds TraumaPAKs from the ground up around these four types of injuries. All the high quality gear in their TraumaPAKs are designed specifically to treat

these injuries first and anything else we add is for the small non-life threatening injuries that we call “BooBoos”. If your kit only treats “booboos” then you are setting yourself up for failure. Here’s what should be in your trauma pack. At a minimum you should have medical gloves, trauma shears, a commercial grade tourniquet with a windlass rod, pressure dressing, wound packing gauze or a homeostatic gauze and vented chest seals. The other nice to have items would be a second tourniquet a sharpie to write the time on the tourniquet, duct tape and instructional card. They also pride themselves on their “Save a life pledge”…They will replace for free any of the life-saving components of your TraumaPAK if you used it to help someone in distress. Thier motto is, “Let’s save lives together!” and we hope you join them in doing just that! Visit TraumaPAK at www.TraumaPAK.com or on IG @traumapak

The California Range Weekend or CRW as it is known, is a Pro 2A event, to help bring the firearms community together in California. We have a large gun culture here in California, but unfortunately it is largely underground due to the numerous restrictions placed on law abiding gun owners here. This event is to help bring the culture to light for those who aren’t aware how large it actually is in California, and that law abiding gun owners are more in the majority than Corporate Media would have you believe. This idea for holding event was based on, “Ohio Range Day”, started by Rick Crawly (Achilles Heel Tactical). His goal was to bring people together and help put quality instructors with the regular folks that wanted to train up their firearms proficiency. That idea made me realize there are not enough people in this state trying to bring this small community together. Living in California, we have the stigma of being very anti-gun here, which is far from the truth. Anyone can attend CRW that has basic firearms training under their belt. This is to make sure everyone who attends a class will be as safe as possible. That being said, I and a few other instructors are giving discounts to people needing basic firearms training that want to attend CRW. This event is designed for all allies of the 2A, and we want to make every opportunity for people to attend. We will have 7 schools/instructors teaching at the event. • Mark Ackenback (First defense) @ firstdefense_usa • Fabio Spinella (My Own Defender) @ myowndefender • Nate Vollbrecht (TSI Corps) @nate_tsicorps • Gabe Rivera (Mindset Tactical Solutions) @ mindset_tactical_solutions •Richard Castro and Steve Gant (Corevision Industries) @castrosorous_rex @03industries • Richard Mo and Alex Chu (Raven Wing Limited) @ravenwinglimited • Gerry P, Luis Munoz, Brian W (Triple Feed) @ triple_feed

I hope people understand that the gun community will not survive unless we all come together and fight for our rights as a whole. These events are designed to help people understand that no one is alone in the community and we can all help keep the 2A around for future generations.

#CUSTOMIZE #SHOP p.18 ||| ||| calgunr.com calgunr.com

! T I E Z I M O T S CU WORDS: STAFF

SO YOU WANT TO TRICK OUT YOUR RIFLE, LET’S TAKE QUICK A LOOK AT SOME OF THE DIFFERENCES Customizing a good, basic rifle is the hot new trend these days, with a variety of offerings from many different manufacturers available out there. Everything from hand guards, optics, rails and bolts to custom grips. Purchasing the parts is easy, however, when it comes to tackling the actual installation of some of these parts, the difference between customizing an AR versus an AK47 are quickly apparent. Working with an AR, it’s pretty much plug-and-play. The tools required for a basic AR build consist of an armorers wrench, a set of precision screwdrivers, a set of bits and a punch set. Pliers and vise grips can be used in a pinch, but will make what would otherwise be an easy job with the right tools very challenging on an AR. AR kits range from a low of $50 and skyrocket to over $4,000, but the latter is probably not needed for the average enthusiast. There are some good economical options

hovering around the $150-$300 price point that should satisfy most shooters customization goals. When it comes to the AK, however, look out. We’ve heard lots of nightmare stories about custom builds that went very wrong when something doesn’t line up quite right. As you’re aware, things lining up perfectly is kind of important when it comes to explosive projectiles being fired through steel barrels. These problems happen more often than not with the AK, which is attributed to the numerous variants of the AK platform, sourced from factories around the world. For years, AK47 rifles have been imported as de-milled AK parts kits. De-milling means that the original rifle was taken apart into its component pieces, ground down, pressed out and other means, which can prove to be very difficult to put it back together without the correct tools. For example, some people (the ones who don’t watch

YouTube videos) buy these kits and assume they can just pop in a barrel the same way you would with an AR. Nope, not even close. Most kits do not have barrels attached and need to be hydraulically pressed in. There are populated barrels which means you can skip the sometimes dangerous part of pressing it in. Other parts such as hand guards, grips and stocks can be pretty straightforward but even then sometime things don’t line up and the rifle is an expensive wall-hanger at that point… The proper tools can run upwards of $1500 for everything needed to start building the Kalash kits, for example. Either way, there’s something for everyone who wants to buy a build kit for either platform. For the complete ground-up build, there’s always the option to buy an entirely prebuilt rifle and customize it. We will have more on this in the upcoming issues of CG and on our YouTube channel so keep a look out.

PLATING YOUR FIREARM

WORDS: STAFF We typically think of our firearms as rugged tools designed to withstand a good amount of use. As proof, we have never seen cowboys cleaning their guns in the movies. Just reloading (sometimes) and shooting from the hip. Of course, anyone who has owned a nice rifle or pistol for a few hours will quickly attest to the one thing that instantly puts them on alert. The finish. The moment a fingerprint or smudge is left on the barrel, we break out the polishing cloth and quickly remove it. We’ve all heard horror stories of rust on the barrel of a gun improperly stored. Some firearm owners want to be different and stand out with something unique like a fully chrome-plated .45 or AK47. Some will go the bling route with a gold and black finished AR rifle or pistol. Some types of firearm plating, such as gold, rose gold or chrome are purely for looks and add nothing to the tactical performance. Others, such as an electroless nickel plating and hard chrome plating, offer functional benefits to the weapon. Firearm plating options range from the purely decorative to purely tactical and sometime in between the two ranges. Decorative plating typically covers the entire weapon in a shiny metallic finish. Silver and gold plating are the two most common examples of decorative plating. Plating can be applied to the entire surface of the firearm or only to specific areas for that cool custom look. While it can be argues that the gold or silver plate does offer some protection against wear and tear, these firearms are typically for show, and everyone knows it. To actually improve the function of the weapon and/or make it more resistant to wear, corrosion and rust, the smart money is on a harder plating option. Hard chrome or electroless nickel plating is one way that looks good yet still protects the firearm. Electroless nickel plating also produces a harder finish than that created by electroplating. We will be bringing you a series on plating in our upcoming issues so stay tuned!

ARMOR UP BOYS & GIRLS!

PHOTO: @STATE48PLATES

WORDS: STAFF

SO, YOU GOT SOME NICE GUNS, HUH? WELL, TAKE THE NEXT STEP AND GET SOME PROTECTION THAT MIGHT JUST SAVE YOUR LIFE ONE DAY… As you may have noticed, that whole Defund the Police thing doesn’t appear to be working very well in California, unless the government really wants more murders and violent crime, of course. The increase in violence this past year has now brought many people to the wide, complex world of body armor. Before spending your hard-earned money, you need to make informed decisions when buying body armor. Below, this article will try and cover the basics, but you should also do your own research, so as to expand upon the general information provided here. Most body armor systems come down to: 1) the plate carrier; and 2) a set of body armor plates. The important decisions need to be made in order to ensure that you buy the body armor that’s not only right for you, but will do what you expect it to in the conditions you plan on encountering. The body armor “plate” is a flat piece of bullet resistant material designed to fit inside a vest or other article of clothing, commonly known as a plate carrier. Not to be confused with Kevlar cloth. The plate is in addition to the Kevlar, typically. Many body armor plates typically will have a slight curvature to make them more comfortable to the wearer. In some cases, there may be the option of upgrading to what’s known as a multicurve design, to make the body armor plates even more comfortable. In some cases, smaller body armor plates known as “side plates” can be inserted into the sides of a plate carrier to provide additional protection from being shot in the sides or flanks. Many different types of bullet resistant materials exist, of course.

Only a few are used to create body armor plates, the most common being steel and ceramic. There are pros and cons with each type material, naturally. Steel Core: This popular type of armor is typically made from AR500 or AR550 steel. The term, “AR500” is the hardness rating of the steel itself. The higher the number, the harder the steel. For example, AR550 steel is rated to stop bullets with more penetrating power such as M855 rounds, otherwise known as, “Green Tips” or “armor piercing rounds”, where AR500 steel is best suited for slower moving bullets such as 7.62 x 51 M80 BALL (.308 rounds). Steel core body armor can also withstand numerous hits and absorb significantly more punishment than most other types of armor. Important to note that steel core body armor is susceptible to spalling or fragmentation, however, some manufacturers can cover the steel with a proprietary coating. Ceramic Composite: There are multiple types of ceramics and plastic composites that are used to make this type of body armor. Due to the composition of these materials, it’s very possible to make thin and flexible body armor. However, ceramic body armor is more prone to cracking, which makes it less effective when hit with multiple rounds in comparison with steel core body armor. Most commonly known as a “bulletproof vest”, the plate carriers are designed to hold body armor in the proper position to protect the wearer’s vital organs. Most plate carriers can fit a variety of body armor plate types, so long as the size of plate is not larger than what the vest’s original design called out. Typically, the majority of men would

be well suited for protection using 10” x 12” plates and most modern plate carriers are designed to fit this size. Other than the size of the body armor plate that’s being placed inside in the plate carrier, it’s important to understand the purpose of the different types of plate carriers, themselves. To simplify, most carriers will fall into one of three categories: Tactical, Wraparound or Active Shooter Response carriers. When researching the best body armor to buy, you’ll inevitably run into the abbreviation “NIJ” which stands for National Institute of Justice. The NIJ is the government agency that sets body armor standards for all law enforcement agencies. While not all body armor is certified by the NIJ, the standards set by the NIJ are used by body armor manufacturers to inform consumers as to the capabilities of their body armor products. This is a good rule of thumb to follow. Below is a list of the current NIJ NIJ PROTECTION LEVELS

////

Level IIA Tested to stop 9mm and .40 S&W ammunition fired from short barrel handguns. No rifle ammunition protection. Level II Tested to stop 9mm and .357 Magnum ammunition fired from short barrel handguns. No rifle ammunition protection. Level IIIA Tested to stop .357 SIG and .44 Magnum ammunition fired from longer barrel handguns. No rifle ammunition protection. Level III Tested to stop 7.62mm FMJ lead core rifle ammunition. Level IV Tested to stop .30cal steel core armor piercing rifle ammunition.

HODGE ROAD

WHERE TO SHOOT

OUTDOORS IN CALI

(LEGALLY)

WORDS: STAFF

SOMETIMES YOU JUST GET THE URGE TO GO OFF ON A RANDOM TRAIL AND SHOOT A FEW HUNDRED ROUNDS, BUT CAN YOU? The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is a Federal agency that administers all public lands under their jurisdiction. They own a lot of land in the southwest. The majority of this land is available for a variety of undeveloped recreational activities, including target shooting, except where prohibited by federal, state, and local laws. In California, there are no designated target shooting sites managed by the BLM, but recreational shooting opportunities are usually available on some undeveloped land, which will usually be posted. Target shooting is also available at several public shooting ranges throughout California. Shooting is strictly prohibited in most developed recreation sites and other areas where posted. Target shooting is generally allowed on BLM-administered public lands, as long as it is done in a safe manner, without damaging natural resources or improvements on public lands. This means do not shoot up trees and rocks and pick up all your brass and old targets when leaving. The BLM allows the use of firearms on public lands as provided for in California state law. Shooters are always responsible for knowing

applicable laws and using firearms and other weapons in a safe manner. Just because something is not posted does not mean its allowed. You must do you own due diligence. Always remember that hot bullet fragments and exploding targets from recreational shooting can spark a brushfire. Shooters are responsible for any fires started by recreational activities. So don’t do it unless you like jail and paying large fines. Access to public lands must always be via public roads. Crossing of private land to access public land is not permitted, unless you obtain and carry with you, a written, date-specific permission from the private landowner whose land you’re crossing. The BLM sells Surface Management Status maps (in the desert regions these maps are also called Desert Access Guides) that can be helpful in locating public lands. An interactive online map is also helpful in locating public lands. Not all public land parcels will have any type of public access. Private property owners who live on adjacent parcels are well within their legal rights to prevent people from crossing their land to get to the public land, so please respect the ‘No Trespassing’ signs you may

come across in your travels. The BLM Surface Management Status maps and DAG maps do not show specific areas for hunting or target shooting. BLM maps will help you to locate and evaluate potential areas for their suitability as shooting locations. DESERET SHOOTING TIPS WORDS: JAMES D. CREVISTON

If you’ve ever gone shooting you know the agony that comes with the forgetting of an item. There are a few things that can make a day shooting in the desert more fun and safe for anyone venturing into one of California’s expansive and sparsely populated deserts. 1. WATER. No matter how much water you think you will need, double it. Water can also be used to clean out cuts or wounds. 2. SUN PROTECTION. A tarp or canopy can be a big difference for a day of shooting. This also means having sunscreen and some chairs in the shade. 3. SNACKS. Being hungry can make that long day shooting one you may never want to repeat. Bring snacks! 4. CELL PHONE CHARGER. Yes, your car doubles as a cell phone charger, but remember that “two is one and one is none.” Bring an external charger so should you need to call for backup it’s not a race against your phone battery. 5. FIRST AID KIT. A well-packed first aid kit includes a gunshot trauma kit along with a snakebite kit. These could be the difference between life and death. Oh, and in case you forgot, make sure you have two of each. 6. TARGETS. From Jugs of water to empty propane bottles, paper, steel targets, and watermelons. You are only limited by your imagination! Just be safe. 7. AMMO. Take two shots, reload and repeat. Practice your reloading skills without wasting precious brass. Or if money’s no object, just unload those “freedom week mags”! Remember: Proper Planning Prevents Poor Playtime. So plan your day for shooting in the desert in advance and double up on the essentials. Happy shooting!

WESTERN FIREARMS

3 GENERTATIONS IN THE INDUSTRY WORDS/PHOTOS: STAFF

CG: How long has Western Firearms been in the industry?

obstacles you’ve encountered doing business in this industry?

Alex: Western Firearms has been in business for about 25 years. My dad wasn’t fully involved until 2008 when his partner decided to pursue a different career. Once that happened I quit selling auto parts and jumped right into selling firearms with him.

Alex: The largest have always been the changes that are made towards “assualt rifles”, they can at times be confusing trying to figure out the ins and outs of legislation but the constant addition to new laws makes it difficult to keep up and then inform customers of the changes which sometimes for some reason, gets customers upset at us as if we’re the ones making these changes. I’m sure other gun shops can attest to that.

CG: What’s it like working with 3 generations in the family business? Alex: At times it’s great and other times frustrating, but I wouldn’t change that aspect at all. I don’t think too many people can claim that they work with their dad and son in the same business under the same roof. CG: Being a firearms business here in California, what are some of the

CG: What other types of firearm services do you offer here at WFI? Alex: The services we offer are cleaning, armorer work and customization. We also stock accessories, parts, clothing, and gear.

CG: I see some engraved guns you have, have you seen custom engraved firearms becoming more popular? Alex: Yes, especially with some of the younger generation. With our demographic we have been working on the “cartel” style of firearms that are popular now, like fully engraved 1911’s plated in gold and nickel. CG: If someone wants to get a custom made firearm, what do you recommend to them? Chrome, engraving or something else? Alex: First, we find out what type of firearm the customer already has or what they’re looking for. Then based on that information, we talk about what the customer likes and formulate a plan that we then execute into a fully custom and personalized firearm that the customer

can enjoy and then possibly hand down generation after generation. CG: Do you participate in 2nd Amendment activities? Alex: Not through the business name, but I do my part as a certified NRA instructor. I teach firearm safety and promote the importance of our Constitution and the God given rights afforded to us and protected by that sacred document. CG: What is your take on the current state of the firearms industry? Alex: For California, it looks like an uphill battle. We have many obstacles in our way, from community leaders all the way to Sacramento. Very few people that are gun owners are involved at the grassroots level to fight for their 2nd Amendment rights. If they got more involved and made

their voices heard, then we should see real change in protecting not only the 2nd Amendment, but all of our rights. CG: Do you hold any special events throughout the year for customers? Alex: I never thought of doing anything like that, but I think I should give it closer consideration. CG: Any advice you’d like to share for someone interested buying a firearm? Alex: Do your homework. Don’t just go buy a gun on someone’s suggestion. Go out to a local gun range and rent a few makes and models and different calibers. See what you’re comfortable with. Ask questions, go to your local gun shop and ask questions, there’s no such thing as a stupid question but also find a shop willing to impart their knowledge. Once you make that purchase go out and practice and take some classes. Become a responsible gun owner and the more you learn go out and spread that knowledge and educate your friends and family about gun safety and the importance of preserving our way of life.

ARMORY TAKING PASSION FOR FIREARMS AND HARD WORK TO THE NEXT LEVEL Freedom means to be truly free, and that is what we as a company stand for. Growing up in a gun culture family I have always been drawn to firearms. How do they work? Are they for everyone? I had so many questions and as time went on, I started to dig deeper. Let me tell you firsthand, firearms are not toys. I learned that at a very young age. Gun safety is number one and is the responsibility of every gun owner. After developing safe habits and practices, the aspect of creative shooting became a passion. Long distance, short range, tactical building clearing, hunting and personal protection, there are so many routes and so many tremendous options for gun enthusiasts. Shooting Tannerite and watching that stuff explode in a big cloud of dust is an experience that many say, “will set you free”. The feeling of having a chunk of metal in your hands that can fire a projectile at a thousand feet per second is empowering. Who doesn’t want to shoot a MP5 or an AK47 which we have seen in so many movies? How can we make that happen for more people? We have found a way to that at our company. Initially, I had an opportunity to work for a firearm manufacturer and I was beyond excited. I was doing what I loved, working with firearms every day. I learned a lot about the industry and what was lacking. The industry had changed. It is not the old John Wayne six shooter

cowboy hat industry we are targeting. It’s the AR-15 and AK-47 tactical rifle lifestyle. It’s the modded-out American Sniper or John Wick look. The flashlights, the attachments, the sights, the 40mm launcher that you can add to enhance the experience. Some of it is for looks, don’t get me wrong, but most of it serves a purpose. There are so many companies that make so many different products today that you can slap on your rifle or pistol with only a screwdriver. I started to think outside the box that it was time to work for myself and contribute to this new generation. To do that, I came up with the name Bulldog Armory. Initially, it was helping friends and family with builds and info. It quickly grew and before I knew what was happening, I was selling parts to a nationwide audience. We started to grow quickly, and we were assisting with builds left and right, making the most tactical looking rifles you can imagine. Carbon fiber barrels and handguards to match the carbon fiber interiors on Lamborghini’s. Or the decked out AR15 to match the jacked-up GMC 2500 diesel truck. Whatever your lifestyle or whatever car or truck you drive, we can make a firearm to match. We make clones of weapons that you can’t find anywhere. We make them aesthetically pleasing yes but every rifle we build or help build is there to serve a purpose. You want a

WORDS: TOM BOLDT PHOTOS: STAFF

Rambo styled AR15? We can do it. You want an AK47 that looks like the ones in the movie, ‘War Dogs’? We can achieve that goal. The firearm ownership lifestyle is something worth talking about. I believe it brings on a sense of connection to millions of other people. It brings up questions for the first-time gun owner not previously thought about. In the United States we are able to buy firearms for the purpose of self-defense. We have the Second Amendment for that specific reason. Learning about the constitution can be a fun thing to do. It’s something to talk about, discuss, and connect with other individuals. We really have the amendment in place for defense against a tyrannical government. I think something we can all agree on is that nobody likes the government telling us what we can or cannot have. We have government for protection NOT for regulation. I know with my family and friends we are always discussing ammo prices and what is new and improved in this industry. We have early mornings where we get up and head to the outdoor range with friends and family. We bring a cooler of beverages and food. A sense of connectedness and American pride. We enjoy these moments and we live that lifestyle. As I mentioned previously, I wanted to create a company for the new generation of shooters and create a culture that

brings shooting sports back into the lives of Americans. Using a standard 12 gauge shotgun and shooting clay pigeons is fun, but the activity and togetherness goes beyond that. There is so much more to the shooting life. Just like the 1992 FordF150 doesn’t look cool anymore and can’t serve its purpose for the loads of what people need today. The times are changing! The idea for the future (in a perfect world) would be to make shooting sports a normal activity again. Something to get excited about. Something family, friends, work friends can do and talk about without judgment. To involve everyone and anyone. That’s what this country stands for, right? United we stand and divided we fall. Your race, age or gender simply does not matter. The shooters lifestyle is a choice, a stand up for what you believe in and respect our country. We can support different interests and still stay united as a people. I think that is where this country sometimes goes awry. Just because we have different viewpoints doesn’t mean we need to punish one another for thinking a certain way. I can personally get caught up very easily in this way of thinking. We just have to remind ourselves what we stand for. Freedom! Freedom to choose! Freedom to live a respectable life. Stay United and stay FREE!

TRAINING

WORDS: @FIFTYSHADESOFFDE PHOTOS: @JTPHOTO1

HOW A NEW COMPANY IS TAKING CHARGE OF ELITE LEVEL TRAINING IN CALIFORNIA 2020 was one hell of a year with Covid-19, civil unrest and the primary election. 2021 seems to be continuing on with more of those issues without an end in sight. With all of that going on, one area that has seen an exponential increase in is that of gun ownership, specifically first time or new gun owners. 2020 broke all sorts of sales records. People who never thought of owning a firearm or were on the fence before went out and waiting in long lines at gun shops nationwide to purchase any firearm they could get their hands on, out of fear of the uncertainty or simply decided that it was time to have the appropriate tools to defend themselves and their families. We have heard the calls for defunding the police and if law enforcement wasn’t already stretched too thin with their previous budgets, they’re now pushed even further to do more with a lot less. That means longer response times, leaving citizens more vulnerable. While I welcome the additional millions of new gun owners deciding to exercise their Second Amendment rights, I am also cautious about the false

sense of security guns can give them. Just because you have a firearm in your home, it doesn’t guarantee you or your family safety. Like any type to tool or machinery, everyone needs to be trained in the use, this is even more critical with firearms because ignorance or negligence can lead to severe injuries or death. I can go on for a while about the importance of training, bottom line is that you need to know how your gun works and how to manipulate it safely and effectively so that it’ll greatly increase your chances of survival rather than put you and your loved one’s at more risk and danger. For training, I always recommend doing your research into any professional training company and see who their instructors are and their backgrounds. I have been attending as much training courses with many different instructors over the years and I always have more to learn and to improve upon. You must have an open mind when it comes to training and it never ends. Raven Wing Limited is a training company in Southern California that hosts their own courses as well as host sought after instructors from all over

the states. I have trained with them several times over the years at the Angeles Shooting range and they are a very friendly, approachable group of guys and gals that are very passionate about firearms safety and performance based training. They can teach the most basic skills for those at the novice level all the way to advanced skills for the experienced crowd. Here is what Ravenwing is in their own words: “Our idea when we started Ravenwing was to focus on performance-based training. We strive to improves a client’s skillset on pistol, rifle and shotgun. Our clients come from a wide range of backgrounds and we have most if not all of those bases covered. Whether they are law enforcement, military, competitive shooter, or private citizen we can provide training that helps improve their skillset. We keep our classes small to be able to provide a more one on one training environment. One of the main things we do is host other instructors. Every instructor we host is vetted and nationally if not

globally known. Ravenwing provides a southern California home for these instructors and it allows the shooting community here in California access to the best shooters and operators in the US.” Here are their instructors with a short biography: Alexander Chu Owner/Instructor Is a partner and range instructor at Ravenwing. He is a United States Marine Corp Veteran from 2012-2015, where he served as a Rifleman Team Leader, Combat Marksmanship Coach and Armory Custodian. Alex currently works for Taran Tactical Innovations as a Gunsmith, Product Developer and Range Instructor. He is also a Competitive Shooter, currently a Master in USPSA Carry Optics Division. He is Certified as a NRA Instructor for Rifle and Pistol as a DOJ Instructor. Ethan Fleitas Owner/Instructor Ethan has been a lifelong gun enthusiast who started at a very young age, going to the range with his parents as a toddler. He started his shooting career working for a local training center as a Logistics Supervisor and Instructor from 2013 to 2017. He started Raven Wing Limited with his close friends and colleagues in their pursuit of proficiency and efficiency.

THE BEST TRAINING IS TO TRAIN

Richard Mo Owner/Instructor Richard is the other Owner of Raven Wing Limited. Has been training and shooting for over nine years. He is a NRA certified Instructor for Rifle, Pistol and Range Safety Officer. He competed briefly in USPSA. In 2019 he left his previous company and founded Raven Wing Limited. Stephanie Instructor Stephanie (who’s last name is with held for privacy) is an active and full-time law enforcement officer with over ten years of service and experience. She is a California POST certified as an instructor for

handgun, rifle, shotgun and less lethal. She has attended numerous advanced courses over the years with many industry leading instructors. Dean Halloran Instructor Dean began teaching in 2014 with another training company left in 2019 to help start Raven Wing. He competed in USPSA for a short period of time. He is a certified NRA rifle instructor, pistol instructor, and RSO. He currently works part time as a gunsmith and CNC operator at Rifle Supply in Huntington Beach and is a full time mechanical engineering student at Cal State Long Beach. I am far from the best shooter that I can be and will be the first to admit that anyone of these instructors can out perform me any day of the week, I know that isn’t saying much at all. The best way to improve yourself is to surround yourself with people that have a higher skill level than you. I know that I always take away something positive that enhances upon my current skill level that in return increases my effectiveness and survivability when I’m on the job. Raven Wing Limited usually holds their courses at the Angeles Shooting Range in one of the private ranges away from the public side. They utilize both paper and steel targets in their courses to help students learn skills from basic marksmanship to advanced shooting on the move drills with emphasis on athletic performance. Got a Red Dot on your pistol? Raven Wing Limited specializes in RDS pistols is currently the only Modern Samurai Project endorsed instructors in California. They are a great group of people passionate about what they do and have become good friends of mine over the many range sessions that I have attended. If you are serious about learning how to shoot, whether it is for sport, target shooting, competition, self defense, they are a very competent company to train with. BOUT THAT SHOCK & AWE LIFESTYLE

WORDS: KEVIN REESE PHOTOS: COURTESY F1-FIREARMS

Aside from train wreck leadership throat-punching citizens at every 2A turn, other idiotic legislation we won’t get into, and ridiculously high gas and real estate prices, what’s not to like about Cali? The Golden State delivers big on perfect weather, diversity and even gave the world the likes of actor turned president, Ronald Reagan, who once said, “Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don’t have that problem.” As a Jarhead vet myself, I happen to agree with him. Let’s be honest, Cali is a lifestyle melting pot—a place where creative ink is king (on skin and stone alike), lowriders rise, surfer’s

shred, palms sway, mountains keep watch over nestled valleys and tides rise and fall on the coast and in culture. Of course, Cali’s lifestyle also is steeped in celebrating 2A rights—a citizenry alive in the throes of sun, fun and badass guns—the latter, a lifestyle shout-out of its own. From bolt-action rifles on the hunt up in the Sierras to semi-autos on Sunset Boulevard, guns are as much a part of Cali’s culture as sunlight… and the rest of the country knows it. Hell, even the anti-gunners are armed, thick as thieves—years ago, anti-gun California senator, Leland Lee, rolled into prison on a gun trafficking conviction—clown!

Most Californians, from all walks of life, are good, hard-working, law-abiding, yet f*ck-aroundand-find-out people who support the Second Amendment and love flashing their lifestyles. In my mind, a solid way to rep who you are is with the rifle you run with… and there’s no better help with that than Texas AR manufacturer F-1 Firearms, the nation’s best producer of shock-and-awe lifestyle-themed AR-platform rigs… and yes, they do come in California-compliant options! Savage not Average American architect, Russell Warren, lteft us an undeniable truth pill when he quipped, “Obsessed

is just a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated.” This is F-1 Firearms owner, Dion Podgurny’s life… moreover, his living legacy. His takes on perfect performance and aggressive, shock-and-awe designs are the stuff of unapologetic American pipe dreams… with deadlines… turned reality. He is a man on a mission ready to help bored masses speak up about their lifestyles and step up their trigger games with some insanely talented, artsy, hardcore gun-nut hellions doing his bidding. Yes, you read right, F-1 Firearms is here to help. Just as the F-1 key on a keyboard is your help hot-button, F-1 Firearms helps gun owners break the chains of run-of-the-mill black-

THE #SAVAGE LETTER p.38 ||| ||| calgunr.com calgunr.com

gun boredom. Want a boat gun? F-1 hooked hardcore anglers with mahi-mahi and marlin themed rigs. Need a truck gun? Color match that shit! When it comes to F-1’s finish skillset, no other firearm manufacturer works harder to promote your lifestyle… or does it better. Master-craftsmanship and no-holds-barred attention to detail is evident in every aspect, every component of F-1 rigs. Today, F-1 Firearms delivers the creative goods in 69 styles… how they arrived at that number, that’s a question for Dion. While black is one of them, you’re not likely to find many in that vanilla theme, perhaps with the exception with the company’s popular, forged FU-King model—even so, no loss in ultra-reliability, it’ll run with the best of them. The other 68 are a mosh-posh of jaw-dropping stylings crafted specifically to reach into the depths of your soul and return to shout your unique lifestyle from California’s mountaintops. From high-gloss to satin, even battle-worn, F-1 finishes run the gamut from ethereal deep space to depths of a mermaid’s world, from red-white-andblue blooded ‘Merica to bling-bling attitude worth a twerk and high-stack of hundreds, marbleized heavenly or hellish themes and quite a bit more. If you can dream it, F-1 Firearms likely already has it—yes, they’re that good. Honestly, in F-1 Firearm’s fit-form-function vortex of

leading-edge manufacturing, top shelf components and ridiculous finishes, nobody compares. Second place left F-1’s rearview mirror miles back and the company’s (and Dion’s) savage-not-average happy place is found way out in front of the competition; in fact, short of custom finish-only businesses, I don’t know that any other company on Earth fits F-1 Firearm’s business model. At the risk of redundancy, nobody does what F-1 does better, if at all… NOBODY. If there is a monopoly to be had on one-stop-shop customizable production guns complete with SICK finishes, F-1 Firearms is it. MEAN MA Lock – Cali Compliance While F-1 Firearms offers an array of customizations including match-grade barrels and triggers; aggressively designed yet perfectly functional muzzle brakes; precision-machined pistol grips complete with color-themed paracord wraps and hard-anodized, billet controls, F-1 also teamed up with MEAN, LLC to offer triggered CALGUNRs the opportunity to level up, too. MEAN, LLC produces the MA Lock, a California-compliant locking mechanism designed to permanently affix a 10-round magazine to an AR-platform lower receiver. MEAN accomplishes its mission by replacing an AR’s standard magazine release button with the MA Lock. Once a magazine button has been replaced by the similarly shaped

MA Lock component, a bolt is threaded down onto the lower receiver’s magazine catch. When the bolt reaches its required torque the bolthead shears off, leaving the magazine permanently attached, thus your other tacticool creature comforts in place. The MEAN MA Lock is available for AR-15 and AR-10/LR308 systems—perfect, since F-1 Firearms offers rifles in both platforms, too. F-1 Production—In a word, Badassery F-1 Firearms currently produces forged and premium billet AR-15 and AR-10/ LR-308 platform rifles and pistols in FU-King, FDR, UPD, UDR, Patriot, Silhouette, BDRx series options. Equally as important for inquiring minds, YES, F-1 Firearms actually does offer a Badassery Special Edition Rifle—and yes, to overuse a word, it’s BADASS! Of course, with F-1 I’ve learned it’s truly the best, maybe the only one-word descriptor. They own it and you’ll never hear them apologize for it. Good for them… and better for you. Like you, F-1 is about lifestyle… and now a California one to boot. Check out F-1 Firearms’ own savage-not-average lifestyle and rigs on Instagram at @f1firearms. JOHNNNY KRASH OF SABOT FOUNDATION A 501C3 CHARITABLE TRUST GIVE US A LITTLE INSIGHT AS TO WHO MR. JOHNNY “KRASH” IS AND WHAT MOLDED YOU INTO THE MAN WE KNOW NOW? The “who” part would be a longer article but in brief, when I was 15, I had a newspaper route in the Bay Area with the Richmond Independent delivering newspapers (when that was a thing), and part of my route included City Hall, The Library, and the Police Dept. It was there [at RPD] that I developed a relationship with three guys who sparked my interest in not just firearms, but experiencing something different- Detectives Tom Doyle R.I.P., Steve Zeppa R.I.P., and Victor Simms. They encouraged me to joined the Explorer program (much different then how the program is today), from there the acceleration in life experience began. I had never experienced or held a gun up until that point, the first one I ever held was the Smith and Wesson .357- 686 – which later became the first firearm I ever bought…and I still have it. Years later (skipping broad strokes) I entered into the entertainment (music) industry entirely by accident, I became a manager; I had no thoughts or interest in that business. [Then, one night] I was coming home from a career symposium and I got a flat tire coming down Broadway in San Francisco. I turned on a street and got stuck in front of The Palladium Night Club - I couldn’t move or change a tire on a hill. Because of this and it was raining, the bouncer let me in until AAA could come, and it was then that I met MC Spice, aka Spice One, who was there doing a show with Too Short, Tupac, Mopreme (Pac’s brother), Ant Banks and some others. M.C. Hammer was there too, along with his brother Louis. It was Randy Austin (Too Short’s manager) who introduced us - and somehow, I became Spice’s manager for his first two records. Then came producers E-A-SKI & CMT, Master P, the No Limit deal, and 35 or 40 other albums we were involved in, totaling over 40 million albums sold at the end of the day. That would go on for nine

years and then I transitioned into film and television distribution through a person I am still in business with to this day. HOW DID YOU BECOME SO INVOLVED IN THE FIREARM COMMUNITY? When I started in the music business, a business I knew nothing about, I thought it could fail at any time, and the money flow was comfortable, but it was erratic. I went to work in an occasional capacity for two companies with government contracts, one with G.S.A. and the other for H.U.D. I was initially assigned as a contractor at the Oakland Army Base, The Ron Dellums Federal Building and rotating through seven housing projects in an armed capacity between Oakland, San Fran and Richmond - which I got on immediately because of my background. I met by chance a guy who was an Antioch SWAT Sgt. He somehow got a hold of the range at the Concord Naval Weapons Station, a location I was very familiar with and served at. He had a company called STAC, and I began training there. Soon after, another group came in called HALO; this group was comprised of former members of the U.S. and U.K. Special Operations Community, a couple of guys from the French Foreign Legion, and a few guys from larger L.E. (law enforcement) agencies. Then there were a few other experienced guys as well. I liked all of those guys a lot (good memories). At that time, there were not very many training groups in the country that I had heard of, maybe only twelve or thirteen - the main ones being Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, T.E.E.S, Massad Ayoob, Front Sight, Camp CQB, and soon after Blackwater. We trained, and trained with a broad spectrum of groups with a primary focus on smaller departments, the largest being 175 agents over a period of time from one of the DOJ agencies in Frisco. I’m sure there are well over a couple hundred training groups today post 9/11 but back then absent social media, it was word of mouth and mag-

azines. When I left the Bay and came to SoCal, I did another five months back and forth up north, and then it went silent with me in that world for a long time because I was swamped in building a distribution business. A few years later, I met Simon and Mo from Double Tap, Mo now at Raven Wing at a Gun Show, and I went back into training again and started engaging in a new form of training called Performance-Based Training. Overall the training spectrum has grown with some really talented fellas and ladies. TELL US ABOUT SABOT FOUNDATION AND THE FANTASTIC THINGS BEING DONE THROUGH THE FOUNDATION’S EFFORTS. Sabot Foundation was an idea Hammond Meredith, and I came up with. He called me one day on the fly and asked if I wanted to come out to Big Horn Wyoming, a place I’ve never been but is the place where all the reputable polo people from around the world travel to during the summer, it’s also where they hold the famous WYO (Wyoming) Rodeo in neighboring Sheridan. The foundation has a prime health and wellness focus for Veterans in the realm of PTSD, TBI, CTE as well as At-Risk, Homelessness, Employment assistance and other support we provide through a variety of effective programs we offer. The overall goal is the reduction and elimination of pills and suicide plaguing veterans. Let me add awareness as well. We have put on or have engaged in over 50 events and have assisted or connected with over 550 veterans to date. We are a boutique foundation, we’re not big, but we are effective in our focus and response to a larger problem. Over 115,000 veterans have committed suicide since 2001. That number has outpaced the also-rising rate in the general population in recent years. DOD reported some of its highest suicide rates were in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE CHANGE IN THE FIREARMS COMMUNITY? I have been to sixty-seven countries and all over the U.S., upwards of thirty-three states, and when travelling in most other states; when I mention California, I always seem to get these funny looks. California is not a well-received name in most places I have been to, I felt. California politicians tout themselves as a leading state, but in the eyes of many, they are not. California, surprisingly, is the state with the most gun purchases. As of this interview, if five Glocks came into a store, they will be all bought within hours. If it were left up to Californian politicians, we would only be limited to compound bows, sling shots and black powder. Politicians are not leaders; they are lost in their narrow-mindedness. Even law enforcement in an off-duty capacity is restricted with the same rules except for maybe “LE Only” guns, and I still don’t know what that means other than they are guns not on California’s Approved Roster. California politicians spend almost as much time restricting guns as they do (trying and failing) to solve the homeless pandemic (about 160,000 people and rising effected by homelessness, 12,000 are veterans). Yes, the homeless issue is now a pandemic in itself. The firearm community as a whole is strong; no changes there. Still, most politicians do everything they can to make it increasingly difficult for manufacturers to sell here and lawful people to buy, their goal, to decimate if not eradicate the firearms market. They want to be saviors, and they are not. The seriousness and interest in firearms training are through the roof, the responsibility of ownership in most cases is solid, people want to feel safe, and when they are told in political ways to rely on First Responders, well you are the first responder in most cases, especially when it comes to your own safety, just ask all the people who have been victims, I’m sure they will agree.

The perfect car requires the perfect handgun. At least here in Southern California. And like all things, perfection takes time and energy to get right. Look at these two beauties and you’re looking at precision mechanical machines that have been done right. Richard from Raven Wing Tactical has owned the gun for about six years. It went through one other gunsmith before this last transformation from AJ Zito. The gun is as perfect as a fighting gun as a 2011 can get. I’ll match it against any current Staccato. A WICKED FORCE COMES THIS WAY! Sometime you need to think outside the box. Sure, AK47’s are great and most people love them, as-is. but what could we do to make them appeal to someone who’s not all that into guns? We’re sure there are about a million fanboys and fangirls out there whose dream is it to own some cool Star Wars-themed weaponry that actually shoots real bullets instead of sound and light effects. So for those people, we thought we’d bring it to life! A bone stock Century Arms VSKA was the canvas. This thing was dead-on out of the box. It was hitting 50-100 yardds, spot on. We’ve only run approximately 1,200 rounds thru it, so we haven’t put it through its higher end round count yet. Anywho, we think it’s a great AK so let’s move on to the custom work done on this thing. ONE OF LA’S HOTTEST SPOTS TO GET A FULLY POLISHED, PLATED AND ENGRAVED FIREARM WORDS/PHOTOS: STAFF

Handguns are awesome but they all look alike. What’s a celebrity or baller to do to set their particular pistol apart from the rest of the crowd? Custom polishing and engraving, of course. If you can afford the gun, you can afford to make it fun. Browsing the gram a few months back we came across a sick picture of a fully engraved and plated black and gold 1911. This lead us to a small shop in Downey, CA by the name of JD’s Polishing. We stopped by to snap a few pics of a couple of freshly done firearms that looked FIRE! We will be coming back to do a full feature and interview on the shop, so stay tuned.

TRIPLE DIPPN’ WHEN CALI CULTURE AND FIREARMS COLLIDE!

WORDS: @OHHH.RONNIE PHOTOS: @REST_EASY

CALGUNR HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT DOWN WITH CHUCK AND JUSTIN OF RIFLE SUPPLY ABOUT THEIR C10 ERA BUILD, AND HOW THEY ENDED UP WORKING TOGETHER…NOT ONLY AT RIFLE SUPPLY, BUT ON THIS PARTICULAR BUILD. THEIR ANSWERS WERE ALMOST AS ENTERTAINING AS THEIR DYNAMIC. Ronnie: So, Chuck you’re an artist. Chuck: Yeah, I guess I could call myself an artist. Justin: He was a chef before, so I pushed for a long time to get him in here ‘cause his brain works like mine doesn’t - like designing stuff, and all of our cerakote, anything on our Instagram - that’s all him. Mondo: How’d you come up with the C10 build? How did that come about? Justin: Raul came in and he was a friend of one of our friends from ‘Relaxed Atmosphere,’ the car club. And he’s like, “I want to do something that matches. [my truck]” I pretty much dumped it off on Chuck and said, “let’s do something really cool for this.” Ronnie: So what was the thought process, exactly? Take us from start to finish. And how long did it take?

Chuck: When I got the project, he basically just handed me his guns and he’s like, “I want them to look like my truck.” I was like, “okay.” [chuckles] We tried to keep the top of the gun red, like his truck, and keep the body of it gray. Chrome accents in there, and just not make it too flashy. Just keep it simple. Like his truck. Justin: Yeah. It’s actually a pretty basic build. It’s not anything crazy as far as the paint because it’s paint…isn’t crazy. Once he [Chuck] did it [paint], then the engraving came in and I just wanted to put a ‘C10 Era.’ So, we branded the front of it. We branded the lower, rebranded the rail, just to kinda push the accents a little bit more. It needed to match the style of the truck. Same thing with the Glock too. Chuck: Yeah. We tried to match the rifle to the Glock and make it all, just kind of look uniform, all kind of matching. Ronnie: So you mentioned earlier that you are a chef, how did you get involved in all of this?

THE LETTER p.52 ||| ||| calgunr.com calgunr.com

And where does all this artistic creativity come from? Chuck: Um, I guess I’ve always had a natural artistic ability. When I was younger, I used to like to draw and paint a lot, and that just kind of moved forward in life. I cooked for a while and was living with Justin while he was working here. He asked me to come work here, part-time just doing some random stuff. And it just kind of built from there. The guy who was painting before quit, so they were like “hey, we need someone to paint. Do you want to learn how?” I was that just like “uh, yeah, sure.” Ronnie: Were you always interested in firearms? Have you always have a love for guns or is that also new? Chuck: This is all brand new. I got my first gun I think three or four months after working here. Since then, I think I have maybe seven or eight now. Mondo: What was the hardest part about the build? Chuck: Just trying to match it to the truck and not go over the top with it. Keep it simple, but keep the same style. And matching the colors. Mondo: How long did it take you to match it? Chuck: It took a couple tries because once you mix the colors, and after you spray it and then bake it, the colors change a little bit. Justin: That’s trying it, and re-sandblasting the entire gun and then doing it again; and then re-sandblasting the entire gun and then laying out again. Justin: He also taped off the grip and sprayed the inside of that. Because the inside of that grip is black, but we want to leave that black because the rims are red with silver. The attention to detail is, is on point. The only thing that people will probably say about it is ‘why did you leave the black?’ Chuck: Black where? Justin: Like the black dust cover the black all over on that side. Chuck: The tires on the truck are black, so there’s black on the inside just to keep it kind ‘black, gray and red.’ Justin: The Glock is the same thing. Raul didn’t want to go overly crazy. Keeping it simple on this one was kind of tough, and Raul isn’t super flashy. He goes and shoots

them, you [Raul] shot them three times last week. So, they’re not trailer queens. That was kind of the big thing, I think. Chuck: Yeah, I didnt want to make them too flashy to out-flash the truck, even though the truck is really nice. It’s still just simple. Ronnie: I think you guys definitely have your own style. Justin: Yeah, it’s just different. Justin: Mmmm…Totally different…. our styles are totally different. Ronnie: But we just agreed that you don’t have style or creativity. Justin: I’ve got style! Look at my haircut! Chuck: He has his own like ideas and then I have my own ideas and we’ll try it one way and sometimes it’ll work and sometimes we’ll both be like, all right, that one didn’t work. Let’s try it this way. And so it’s just a lot of trial and error. Justin: It’s like any relationship, it sounds cheesy as hell, but we compromise on stuff. We’re like, okay, when we come to the table with two opposing ideas, [usually] I will defer to him because he has more vision. Mondo: How do you feel about having a cover gun? Chuck: pssshhhttt…[smiling] Justin: He was fuckin stoked, don’t let him play that shit down. He was fuckin stoked. Chuck: Yeah, I was super excited… Oh, yeah, it kind of took me by surprise. Ronnie: Did you celebrate? Chuck: Nah. Not yet. First I was just painting the guns for Raul to match the truck. And they were all like, “Hey, it’s going to be in a gun magazine.” I was like, “Oh, that’s rad!” You know? Like, my first thing in the magazine, and then they’re like, “It’s going to be on the cover.” And I was like, “Whoa, that’s even crazier!” It’s like I said, I’m still pretty new to all this - and to come so far in such a short time, it’s just, it’s kind of humbling. It’s crazy. Justin: Sorry if we didn’t give you everything you need, we did our best. Ronnie: It’s okay, we’ll be back. And with cameras next time!

LOCKED LOWDID WORDS: STAFF PHOTOS: @REST_EASY

One thing the lowrider community knows very well is their attention to detail. Ask any firearms enthusiast a question about their favorite gun, and you will undoubtedly be barraged with the details of their favorite and most meaningful pieces. It’s easy to see why someone with an appreciation for personal style and customization, without the sacrifice of functionality, would be interested in both lowriders and firearms. Johnny Krash is one of those people, along with someone who is not too shy to make a bold style statement using any means available. Here, two of his most inarguably eye-catching creations are put to the test when we put them near one of our gorgeous models… I love this rifle, because I have a variety of AR platforms that I try to create something unique, where there’s no two platforms that look alike. For this one, I wanted something that was aesthetic and attractive looking from a mechanical and stylistic standpoint, although it was not built for a tactical purpose. I do not enjoy this one that much on the range because of the heavier weight of this rifle compared to my other builds, which are much lighter and more efficient tactically. Still, it turned out very solid and cool. I’m happy with the esthetics of it. All in all, I think it’s an awesome build and glad to have had the chance to feature it with you so everyone can take a look.

This unique weapon has been causing some folks in the community to sit up and take notice. Needless to say, it speaks for itself and is clearly one of the hotter AK custom designs out on the market right now. For all those that have been asking about buying this awesome AK at the gun shows, here ya go! Check out the parts list and you can now create your very own. This fine AK specimen comes from Dave Maga, Owner of COMPMAG and Great Dane AK Armory. This was his first custom AK 47 he purchased and he said he wanted something that was different from the normal AK’s out there. He opted for “The Volk” from Meridian Firearms. On top of an already stout firearm build, Dave added a FAB Defense Core-CP stock and pistol grip. He also added a Midwest Industries side optic mount and a Vortex Razor AMG optic.

NOTHING WRONG WITH A LITTLE GOLD IN YOUR LIFE! WORDSPHOTOS: MONDO MERINO

The AK47 is an interesting weapon. A storied history, lots of hype, hundreds of movie appearances and one of those guns you either hate or love, there is usually no middle ground with most firearms folk. Then when you think about goldplated AK47’s, you think “No way, that’s definitely not me.” However, should you make the leap and now you’re holding one in your hands, something about it makes you want it. Then when you take it to the range and everyone’s staring at you and says “Hey, that’s pretty cool, can I check it out it?” you think to yourself, “Oh yeah, that’s me!”

While we were wrapping up this issue we got a call from Dave over at Great Dane AK Armory who says he had a freshly built gold AK47. We knew we had to squeeze this in. Jumping on the horn we reached out to Horacio from Chingon The Magazine to get a hold of a sick Harley for the shoot. H did his thing lining up Lefty from On Broadway Tattooz along with his sick 2010 Harley Glidemaster. Big H also pulled in Jessie over at Lordz of Kustomz for the back drop. @trixie_gogo__ agreed to dazzle everyone with her dangerous curves that sets this feature off right!

MERICAN MAYHEM

Whether you are the zombie apocalypse prepper, or the baseball enthusiast [or anyone in between], you cannot deny the compulsion to add a Crackin’ Skullz creation to your collection of prized possessions. Starting the list of pros in purchasing your badass maple bat is the fact that from start to finish, these beauties are all American. As if being a method of home defense AND being American wasn’t convincing enough, these babies are fully customizable. Just about anything you can dream up [within certain limitations, of course] can be done!

CRACKIN’ SKULLZ MAYHEM BATS WORDS: RONNIE TORRES PHOTOS: MONDO MERINO

WHEN AND HOW WAS CRACKIN’ SKULLZ BORN? During the Halloween Haunt season, I was a Squad Leader in the “Infected” Zombie apocalypse attraction at Knotts Scary Farm. In addition to a side-arm or rifle, we were allowed to carry a mayhem weapon of choice. Being a huge Negan fan (from the Walking dead) I chose the MacFarlane barbed-wire wrapped replica “Lucille” bat. After carrying it for five years, I decided to make a real one, just for fun. Then I made another, then I had a friend ask to make him one, and said he’d pay me for one. Then the Pandemic hit, I was stuck at home, and to occupy my time, I made a few more. Then I experimented with spikes, lettuce cutters and razor blades, then machetes and saw blades. And now here we are! HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME CRACKIN SKULLZ? It just seemed like the perfect fit. What the “Lucille” bat was intended for, was for killin’ zombies. How do you kill a zombie? A headshot with a gun, or crack that skull with something. Two great things about these bats; (1) it’s quiet when it’s doing its work, (2) you don’t have to wait 10-days to take possession, (unless I need to build it for you) and (3) you never run out of ammo!

WHAT DO YOU GUYS DO AT CS? I stick to making cool bats that create great conversation when people see them. I do special order bats, add names, special colors, etc. I always say, “the limit is your imagination”. WHO ARE THESE BATS FOR? Both men and women. These are not created as a weapon. They are something to hang on the wall in your Man Cave, or the She-Shed for you ladies. I have actually sold several bats to women; some as gifts, some for them to keep for themselves. We have several bats hangin’ in living rooms and family rooms all over California. ANY PLANS FOR A CS CUSTOM FIREARM BUILD? Now that would be fun to do. Maybe a matching paint scheme AR-15 and bat?

RAIL BLADING WORDS: STAFF PHOTOS COURTESY: FUNSNUF

CUSTOM RAILROAD SPIKE KNIVES Some people have different talents, and some people use that talent to create cool things. It was a couple years after picking up a skateboard and skating all the ditches and spots around the train yard the creative mind of Funsnuf, as he’s known, started to notice railroad spikes lying around. That was the spark!

THESE ARE SOME PRETTY SICK KNIVES. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH MAKING. THESE KNIVES OUT OF RAILROAD SPIKES? Thank you! I remember seeing a picture of one somewhere about five years ago and wanted to make myself one. Then a few friends wanted one and so began the journey to make the next one better than the last. HOW HAS ART HELPED WITH YOUR KNIFE PROJECTS? If anything It’s given me a curiosity to pick up new mediums and learn new ways to create. And if you do anything long enough you’ll get an eye for it. HOW DID YOU GET INTO CUSTOM ARTWORK? I’ve been drawing since I was kid but never showed anyone. Then social media came out and made it easier to put it out there anonymously. Then enough people asked for it and I was able to turn my hobbies into jobs. ARE YOU INTO FIREARMS? Most definitely! My father taught me gun safety at a

young age. I spent many cold mornings in the duck blind as a kid, haha. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST FIREARM? The first one was a little Winchester model 370 .410 when I was a teen. Then a few 20 gauge shotguns and 12 gauges. First handgun I ever purchased was my R1 1911 .45 then immediately made some scales out of old skateboards. [what does he mean by scales? For reloading ammo?] WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR ART TAKING AND YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? Honestly I’m blown away it’s gotten this far. If I can keep creating and traveling and having a good time, then it’s a life well spent! WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOU ONLINE? All I’ve ever had is my Instagram @funsnuf but I’m working on a website and it should be up and running soon enough, so check instagram if you want to stay updated. Thank you for the opportunity. I really appreciate it!

AGGRESSSION IS THE RULE WORDS: RANDY ROZZELL PHOTOS: STAFF

RANDY ROZZELL OF AMERICAN WARRIOR COMBATIVES TALKS REALISTIC KNIFE DIS-ARM TACTICS Having an attacker pull a knife on you is scary. It’s even more frightening when their intentions are more than just intimidation or robbery but taking your life. This is why an attacker must be made to fear their victim if you have any chance of survival. Statistically, most knife attackers charge their victims with a lead forearm frame to pin their victim against a wall or push their victim backwards. Their knife wielding hand is usually coming from below in an upward thrust to the victim’s abdomen about 100 miles per hour and multiple times like a sowing machine. Moving backwards or trying

to run away will only lead to the attacker on top of you or stabbing you in the back. Stepping forward and offline, pinning the arm, and hitting your attacker in the head multiple times is the only thing that will change their mind. Grappling over the knife is usually unsuccessful because they are still thinking of ways to put the knife in you. You have to interrupt their thinking process by hitting the head, hard. You must make them pay and suffer the consequences for pulling a knife on you. That’s why aggression is the rule.

STEP 1 ///////////////////// If de-escalation has not worked and a knife attack is eminent, your hands being down or in your pockets is no good. You must bring them up into a defensive position and assume a basic fighting stance.

STEP 2 /////////////////// Next you must step offline at a 45-degree angle towards your attacker with your lead leg, while simultaneously pinning the attacker’s knife wielding forearm with the back your forearm in downward spearing type motion with your weight behind it.

STEP 3 //////////////////////// Now your non-pinning arm is loaded to hit your attacker in the head as hard as you possibly can with a fist, open hand palm strike, or elbow. Then continue hitting the head until your attacker drops the knife.

STEP 4 /////////////////////////// Disengage and escape or pick up the knife because you earned it. Look for exits, other weapons of opportunity, and any other potential attackers. Go home, drink beer, and celebrate. You survived.

S D A O R S S O R C GUNSHOWS MAKING 20 YEARS IN THE : STAFF WORDS: @OHHH.RONNIE PHOTOS

CG: We had a chance to chat with the people organizing the Crossroads of the West gun show and get to know them a little bit more. So, for our readers out there who don’t know you yet, go ahead and tell us your name and what you do. CROSSROADS: I am Tracy Allcott and I’m president of Crossroads of the West Gun Shows. CROSSROADS: I’m Bob Templeton. I’m Tracy’s dad, and I work for Tracy now. CG: I love it. I love it. So how long have you guys been at this and what has the growth been like recently?’ CROSSROADS TRACY: We started in 1975. I was just a kid and we’ve all grown up doing it. The gun

shows started out with three shows a year in Salt Lake City. We then expanded into California in 1985 or so. We went from the Cow Palace and we’ve just kind of grown into California and all over Arizona and Nevada as well. It’s gone from three shows a year to almost sixty. CG: What are some of the challenges that you’ve had to face in California as opposed to some of the other states? CROSSROADS BOB: Well, California is a difficult state to do business with just in general, and the regulations around gun shows are so strict and the state has imposed so many more new requirements that it’s very difficult to put one together now. California is now the most difficult state to put on a gun show in our experience.

CG: what are some of the major changes that you would like to see in California? What would be the most important to you? CROSSROADS BOB: Oh, it’d be nice if we give back private citizens the right to sell their own firearms, but that’s not going to not going to happen. CG: Are there any plans for expansion for you guys? CROSSROADS TRACY: There’s always plans for expansion. We love growing our brand. Like I said, we’re a family business and there’s lots of nieces and nephews who want to help us do another show. So, we are always ready to go to whoever has the demand for the next show in their city.

CG: Is there anything else you would like to share with everyone? CROSSROADS BOB: Well, it’s becoming more a Second Amendment issue than it is just about buying and selling guns. We think that the people need to become engaged politically and in defense of the Second Amendment and in fact, in defense of the First Amendment. It’s the right to peaceably assemble and a right to commerce, which itself is a form of speech. Those are all issues that we’ll be dealing with in our lawsuit against both Del Mar and against the State of California, if they implement this bill that’s passing through the legislature now, into law. CG: You mentioned Del Mar and we noticed that there are a lot of places in California that are not

allowing gun shows, period, even though they are supposed to be allowed. Even without the new laws, there are a lot of counties and states that are not allowing them. What was your experience trying to put this one together? Was what were some of the difficulties that you faced?

CROSSROADS BOB: Lots of approval levels needed from health departments, county governments, state. We have to get a permit in the state for each and every show that we do have to have a certificate of eligibility. There’s just a lot a lot of barriers, and red tape to putting on a show, now.

CROSSROADS TRACY: It’s always the health department. We have to first get approval from them before we can do anything in the current environment. That’s where we always have to start, it’s the easiest weapon for them to use against us. There are so many steps we have to take to get approval. We’ve been doing this for as long now that we have it down. We have to follow those guidelines every time.

CG: Right. That’s how they stay employed. CROSSROADS TRACY: That’s right. And they make a few dollars off of us in the process. CG: Exactly. That’s what it all comes down to at the end of the day. Well, thank you guys for chatting with us.

GEARCON /////// WORDS/PHOTOS: MONDO MERINO

This past March 2021, we’d heard about an event called, “Gear Con” and decided to head on down to San Diego and check it out. While vendors were still setting up around 9:30 there was already a large crowd waiting for the doors to open. At 10 sharp the event began, and everyone flooded in. In addition to all the great exhibits, they had cold beer on tap and also Johns Sweetfire Barbeque was serving up some delicious food. The president of Kore Essentials, (Karl Kozak) and Christian Rodriguez produced this entire event. Their mission statement was basically, “The frustrations of all the usual yearly expos being cancelled due to COVID and also from just

being bored with all of California’s ridiculous restrictions.” This was motivation enough for them to put Gear Con together. Christian also said, “Crossroads here in San Diego is apparently being completely discontinued because I guess the Del Mar Fairground doesn’t want that on their property anymore which is quite frustrating. We figured this would be a new and refreshing way to bring something like this to San Diego to really bring the community together.” All and all, it was a great event and we met some great new companies and attendees who all had a great time. Look out for Gear Con 2.0 coming soon!
