Maria Walker Contemporary Textile Artist

“I am very passionate about telling the stories of ordinary people using my textile work, especially the stories of working class women, as these are often overlooked by history. I am also fascinated with the traces people leave behind through their contact with personal and everyday objects. I find old textiles and garments particularly intriguing due to their tactile and sensual qualities and the close personal and bodily relationship we have with them throughout our lives. I have a keen interest in social history and heritage. I have developed research skills through my studies and my research into my own family history, which I have used in my textile-based projects. Over my years as a textile artist I have developed a wide range of textile skills and techniques, which I apply to my practice as appropriate. These include:Hand embroidery, machine embroidery, illustration, fabric manipulation and sculpture, digital and hand printing, transferring designs and images, fabric collage, weaving, knitting etc. I have just completed a MA in Fine Art which has enabled me to develop this interest into more sculptural work as another strand to my practice. Website: mariawalker.co.uk Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/mariawalker.co.uk Email: maria@walker1.net Phone: 07719 826763/ 01925 861150
