HOW DO YOU SPELL C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A? Thanks to a generous corporate sponsorship from Golden 1 Credit Union, the iconic C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A letters donated by the Disneyland Resort were installed at the California State Fair in 2013. The giant letters were relocated from the entrance of Disney California Adventure park, where they stood for a decade, to the Main Gate at Cal Expo. The Disneyland Resort donated the letters in the fall of 2012 to the Friends of the California State Fair, a nonproﬁt organization with a volunteer force of more than 350 people committed to promoting public awareness and support for the California Exposition and the State Fair. The Friends of the Fair actively sought a sponsor to make the installation project a reality. “Golden 1 Credit Union is California’s leading credit union and we are thrilled to bring this state landmark to the community and Cal Expo,” said Donna Bland, Golden 1 President and CEO. “We have enjoyed a great partnership with Cal Expo and the California State Fair for many years and felt this would be a ﬁtting way to demonstrate our support of the communities we serve while providing an opportunity to make memories for the hundreds of thousands of Californians who attend the State Fair and Cal Expo events each year.”

Our future leaders will Dream Big as they explore the possibilities of the Golden State in a comfortable, family friendly environment. Kids and kids at heart will play, explore, and discover what makes California golden. The Dream Big Exhibit features: Story Time Exploration, Mothers Lounge, Dream Big Vignettes, Play Time Adventures, Snack Shack, and The Dream Big Theatre.

MINDS IN MOTION Expo Center Building 3 Our future leaders will challenge their minds as they explore the possibilities of the Golden State in a comfortable, family friendly environment. This exhibit will feature teen friendly exhibits such as Kinetic machines dexterity testers, a Maker’s fair style area, giant chess and a lounge hang out area. Our animal component of this project ties life science into the all-round equation. Live animal displays will be arranged near or adjacent to one another related physical science displays learning comes to life. Our animals are unique on their own, however when mixed with physical displays learning comes to life. Unusual animal species are fascinating and guest will experience them like never before. Our life science staff will be present to give personal information on the animals as well as being available for guest to ask questions.

Expo Center Building 7 This colorful exhibit features prize winning paintings, sculpture, photography, and other original works of art created by adult California artists. In several demonstration areas, artists show how they create works of art. A special exhibit space is reserved for Fair favorite, Plein Air at the Fair paintings made at this year's Fair. In addition, an exhibit of paintings by Earl Boley (1940-2013) will be on display throughout the Fair. This selection of paintings spans over 50 years of his proliﬁc art career.

Expo Center Building 8 This exhibit features prize winning quilts, wearing apparel, woodworking, gourds, scale models, embroidery, hooked rugs, porcelain painting and other hand-crafted items made by adult California artisans. Members of the River City Quilters’ Guild demonstrate quilting every day of the fair. In another demonstration area, guilds and individual artists will demonstrate knitting, crochet, rug making, embroidery, porcelain painting and other skills.

CALIFORNIA’S COUNTIES EXHIBIT California Building A/B Year after year, the Counties Exhibits are ranked by Fair visitors as one of the most popular programs at the Fair! In this program, the counties have the opportunity to promote their agriculture, art, commerce, culture, ethnic heritage, history, industry, lifestyles, natural resources, recreation, and tourism by creating 3-D exhibits that represent a part of their county. This year’s theme is “Feasts and Festivals.” The counties compete with each other to display their attributes in the best way. Counties compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards. Judging of the 2015 Counties Exhibits was Thursday, July 9. Exhibits are judged based on their content, marketability, craftsmanship, creativity, and use of technology. There are also many special awards, including awards by popular vote, such as the People’s Choice, Most Educational and Most Fun.

CALIFORNIA COMMERCIAL WINE COMPETITION With more than 2,800 wines vying for medals and awards, this year’s competition highlighted the very best our state has to offer in all wine varietals. The State Fair Wine Competition is the oldest and one of the most prestigious wine events in North America. This year's wine competition consisted of 2,881 wine entries received from 743 participating winery brands. Seventy-two judges on 18 panels awarded 57 Double Golds and 254 Golds, and the top winners showed the diversity of California wine, coming from around the state and from wineries of every size. Top wines including Best of Region and Best of California winners will be featured in the Save Mart Supermarkets Wine Country for visitors to enjoy July 10-26. CALIFORNIA COMMERCIAL CRAFT BREW COMPETITION The California State Fair’s goal is to provide a public platform for competition while showcasing the very best the State of California has to offer. For more than twenty years the California State Fair has held the Commercial Craft Brew Competition where the best craft beers in the state compete for top honors. The prestigious competition offers a venue for California craft brewers to have their product evaluated by highly qualified judges, which encourages the continued improvement and development of the art and science of brewing. In 2014 128 breweries submitted 844 different beers and 12 ciders for judging in 30 designated Beer Judge Certification Program categories. This year the competition was held again at DBI Beverage Inc. in West Sacramento during a four day period from June 11 - 14.There was a total of 1086 entries, 11 of the entries were cider and the remaining 1075 were beer. A total of 29 specific categories of beer and cider were judged. Also, 6 special categories were; Chili Beer, Session Beer, Specialty IPA (black, red, white, Belgian, etc), Wood Aged (beer was aged in a wine or spirits barrel), and Imperial IPA. There were a total of 100 judges and 34 stewards who assisted the competition. A total of 163 California Breweries entered this year’s competition. Each beer was carefully evaluated and scored. First place winners in each category of the competition moved on to the Best of Show round where the overall best beer received the Golden Bear, the State Fair’s highest award.

COMMERCIAL OLIVE OIL & CHEESE COMPETITIONS

CALIFORNIA COMMERCIAL EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL COMPETITION The California State Fair held its inaugural Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition May 7 with distinguished judges and experts analyzing and evaluating the best olive oils from the Golden State. The Best of Show winner for Extra Virgin Olive Oil is The Olive Press, Sevillano. In the Flavored Olive Oil category, Nick Sciabica & Sons, won the top award for their jalapeno ﬂavored olive oil. A complete list of winners can be found at CAStateFair.org. California Extra Virgin Olive Oil is one of California’s fastest growing agricultural industries. With the interest in quality agricultural products and the Farm to Fork movement in full swing and celebrated at the State Fair, the competition was a great way to continue the deeply rooted tradition of competitions that celebrate agriculture while highlighting the State's diverse topography and products.

CALIFORNIA COMMERCIAL CHEESE COMPETITION Cheesemakers from throughout California participated in this cheesy competition to be recognized as one of the best producers in the state. The commercial cheese scoreboard is broken down by ﬂavor, texture, ﬁnish and color. This year the 12 judges for the 2015 competition included: Darrell Corti, Mary Dedrick, Lynn Devereux, Sacha Laurin, Jana Werner, Kristi Bachman, Les Wood, Jenny Knotts, Rebekah Baker, Sheana Davis, Kiri Fisher, Roxanne O-Brien.
