Vivian Montoya of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association has been named the second recipient of the Kohinoor Diamond Award. The award was inaugurated last year by the Noor Group to honor someone in Thoroughbred racing who has demonstrated a genuine love for Montoya Thoroughbreds and helped further the name of Noor. Noor, the 1945 multiple stakes-winning racehorse famous for defeating Triple Crown winner Citation four times in California, was named for the Kohinoor, one of the largest cut diamonds in the world. The Kohinoor is part of the British crown jewels. Montoya is the librarian at the CTBA and frequently helps people research all manner of projects about racehorses and Thoroughbred racing. Many times she goes to great lengths to answer an inquiry, such as when she unearthed information about Argentine-bred Yatasto’s time in California for a request that came from Argentina. Montoya kept digging for information over the course of seven years.

California-bred stakes winner Bettys Bambino is enjoying life these days in North Carolina. There he is learning a new career as a jumper, reports Dawn Mellen, president of After the Finish Line, a funding non-profit to help transition Thoroughbred racehorses to a second career. Mellen’s father, Mike, bred Bettys Bambino (Unusual Heat—Brite Betty, by High Brite) in partnership with Joe Ciaglia and the late Frank Alesia. Alesia’s widow, Sharon, raced Bettys Bambino with Ciaglia Racing and Mellen’s Bran Jam Stable. Trained by Peter Eurton, Bettys Bambino won the 2014 Daytona Stakes (G3T), 2015 Sensational Star Stakes, and 2016 San Simeon Stakes (G3T), and earned a career total of $390,036. The partnership’s patience paid off during the gelding’s racing career. Bettys Bambino developed a suspensory problem after the Sensational Star and later cracked a shoulder, leading to a 22-month layoff. Yet he was able to return to capture the San Simeon and finish third in the 2017 Sensational Star.

Though he didn’t get to compete in the Makeover, Bettys Bambino has learned his retraining lessons well.

SALES FUNDING OF AFTERCARE
SUNSHINE BONUS AT SANTA ANITA Santa Anita and the Toroughbred Owners of California (TOC) have announced the Santa Anita Sunshine Bonus, a new program to attract out-state-horses. It will pay an additional 50% of the respective purse earnings to owners of horses fnishing frst through ffth that have not raced in California during the previous 12 months. In addition to the bonus, all eligible horses will earn a guaranteed $3,000 bonus for their frst start at the track. Te Santa Anita Sunshine Bonus is scheduled to begin in April and will be in efect through the remainder of the current winter/ spring meeting, which concludes June 21. Te Sunshine Bonus will not include frst-time starters and stakes races.
Fasig-Tipton Company and Keeneland have revised their procedures to provide funding to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA). Beginning with the 2020 yearling sales, all sellers/owners will be charged .05% of the sales price (for example, $50 on a $100,000 sale) on each horse sold at public auction with the two companies. Previously, sellers have had the opportunity to opt out of contributing to the TAA. The sales companies will continue to contribute .05% of the sales price on each horse sold at their respective auctions. Buyers will continue to be billed .05% of the purchase price on behalf of the TAA, with participation voluntary. “The TAA has done an outstanding job of providing accreditation and funding to organizations dedicated to retire, retrain, and rehome racehorses,” said Boyd Browning Jr., president of Fasig-Tipton. “All industry participants have a shared responsibility for the animals that are the foundation of our sport, and these newest procedures ensure consistent and reliable funding for an industry initiative that is of the utmost importance.” The TAA, a 501(c)(3) nonproft organization, accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, retire, and rehome Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding. It was initially funded by seed money from Breeders’ Cup Ltd., The Jockey Club, and Keeneland, and it is supported by owners, trainers, breeders, racetracks, aftercare professionals, and other industry groups.

Henry Moreno Henry Moreno, who trained several California-bred stakes winners and was well-known for his success with South American-bred runners, died Feb. 23 in Sierra Madre after a long battle with dementia. He was 90. Born in Corona, Moreno grew up on his family’s Quarter Horse ranch and served in the Army during the Korean War. He initially trained Quarter Horses before switching to Thoroughbreds in the early 1960s. His best runner was Chilean import Tizna, who won seven stakes at Santa Anita, including the 1974 and 1975 editions of the Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (G1). Tizna captured the 1976 San Gorgonio Handicap under 132 pounds, the record for most weight carried by a flly or mare in Santa Anita history. Tizna was the second dam of California sire Cee’s Tizzy, the sire of Cal-bred champion Tiznow. Moreno trained such Cal-bred stakes winners as Red, winner of the 1997 California Cup Sprint Handicap and Zany Tactics Stakes and 1996 Graduation Stakes and California Sires Stakes. Moreno won the 1998 California Cup Mile Handicap with Cal-bred Indiahoma, a gelding he owned in partnership with Howard Beddo. Other stakes winners trained by Moreno included Santa Anita Oaks (G1) winners Lite Light and Timely Assertion, Argentine-bred Re Toss, Irish-bred Sangue, and Argentine-bred Salt Spring. One of Moreno’s fnal runners was Cal-bred graded stakes-placed Spud Spivens. In later years Moreno was one of a group of trainers and others who regularly frequented Clocker’s Corner at Santa Anita in the mornings. There, Moreno told stories and was known to be generous in loaning money to those in need. “Nobody loved racing at Santa Anita more than Henry, believe me,” said Bob Moreno, a longtime racing offcial in Southern California and Henry’s nephew.

The Sham Stakes is now an early January Triple Crown prep at Santa Anita, but in 2010 it was scheduled for Feb. 27 and postponed to March 6 because of heavy rains. California-bred Alphie’s Bet came off his maiden victory in January to capture the $150,000 Sham that year. Ridden by Alex Solis for trainer Alexis Barba, Alphie’s Bet raced in sixth early and won by 21⁄4 lengths over favored Setsuko. Alphie’s Bet completed 11⁄8 miles on the synthetic surface in 1:48.72. Peter Johnson Sr. and Teresa McWilliams bred Alphie’s Bet, a 3-year-old son of Tribal Rule out of their homebred Candi’s Gold mare Miss Alphie. Johnson and McWilliams raced Alphie’s Bet along with Peter’s wife, Ellen. Alphie’s Bet and his dam were named for Ellen’s mother.

Peggy Whittingham Peggy Whittingham, wife of the late Hall of Fame trainer Charlie Whittingham, died Jan. 28 after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 95. For many years Peggy presented the trophy after the Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2T) following her husband’s death in 1999. She frequently entertained racing clients, noted son Michael Whittingham, who added that she could quickly pull together an evening when Charlie told her he was bringing people home. Daughter Charlene Von Bluecher told BloodHorse that her mother enjoyed traveling all over the world, often with owner/breeder Marie Jones. In addition to the many horses Charlie Whittingham trained, such as Horse of the Year Sunday Silence, Charlie and Peggy raised Michael, Charlene, and their brother, the late Taylor Whittingham. Michael also became a trainer, conditioning 1987 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Skywalker, who later sired California-bred champion and sire Bertrando.
HISTORY
Owner/breeders Martin and Pam Wygod and trainer Ron Ellis scored a stakes double at Santa Anita March 18, 1995, with California-bred Pirate’s Revenge and Maximize. Pirate’s Revenge defeated longshot Antifreeze by a neck in the $71,000 Shywing Handicap while Maximize defeated favored Beating the Ruhls by a similar margin in the $71,075 Zany Tactics Stakes. Chris Antley rode Pirate’s Revenge, who completed the downhill turf distance of about 61⁄2 furlongs in 1:14.53. Chris McCarron piloted Maximize over 61⁄2 furlongs on dirt in
1:15.85. Pirate’s Revenge was a 4-year-old daughter of Pirate’s Bounty—Symbolically, by Flying Paster. Maximize was a 3-yearold gelded son of Snow Chief— Seed Case, by Never Tabled. Both were foaled at the Wygods’ River Edge Farm in Buellton.
50 YEARS AGO California-bred QUICKEN TREE won the $110,000-added Santa Anita Handicap March 7, 1970, in spectacular fashion. Lagging some 20 lengths behind in the early going of the 11⁄4-mile event, Quicken Tree and jockey Fernando Alvarez found a hole inside to move up into contention and catch Fiddle Isle to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:593⁄5. Another Calbred, Field Master, fnished third. Lou Rowan bred Quicken Tree, a 7-year-old gelded son of Royal Orbit—Mother Wit, by Counterpoint. Rowan owned Quicken Tree in partnership with Wheelock Whitney, and W. T. Canney trained him. Quicken Tree was a masterful router, having already won three stakes in New York, including the 1968 Jockey Club Gold Cup, at the testing distance of two miles.

PORTLAND MEADOWS DEMOLISHED Oregon’s Portland Meadows racetrack was demolished in late February, to be replaced by a new freight facility. The track, which was owned by The Stronach Group, operators of Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields, Portland Meadows closed last year and offered simulcasting and poker until December. William P. Kyne, a founder of Bay Meadows in Northern California, directed construction of Portland Meadows in 1945. The track opened in 1946 and helped launch the careers of people such as Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens. In recent years Portland Meadows was also used as one of the locations for the 2018 movie “Lean On Pete.”

Woodbridge Farm at the 2016 Barretts October sale. Te flly then brought $50,000 at the 2017 Barretts March select 2-year-old sale. After winning the $98,000 Generous Portion Stakes later that summer, Spiced Perfection added the $200,000 Evening Jewel Stakes and the $100,690 Betty Grable Stakes at 3. She capped that season by taking the $301,035 La Brea Stakes (G1) in December for her then-owner Dare To Dream Stable and trainer Brian Koriner. Spiced Perfection was sold privately just weeks after the La Brea and immediately rewarded her new connections, running second in the $250,000 Barbara Fritchie Stakes (G3) at Laurel Park. She missed by a head after a dramatic stretch duel behind favored Late Night Pow Wow in her frst efort outside of California. It wouldn’t be her last. Spiced Perfection was a 4-1 fourth choice in the $300,000 Madison Stakes (G1) at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. She dug in gamely to score by a neck over Amy’s Challenge, with Late Night Pow Wow third. Shamrock Rose, the winner of the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), fnished ffth. “Te idea of going on the road was to avoid Marley’s Freedom,” Wachtel said of the crack California-based sprinter from the Bob Bafert barn. “Te Fritchie was a heartbreaking beat, but she went on to be two for two at Keeneland.” “Keeneland was an unbelievable race, and my frst grade 1 as an owner,” said Deutsch. “Tat race right there kind of defned what she’s all about. Tat was an extraordinary win and an incredible experience for us.” After the Madison, Spiced Perfection fnished fourth as the second choice in the $500,000 Humana Distaf (G1) on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs, then went to the sidelines over the summer. Trainer Peter Miller, who took over when Spiced Perfection changed hands, primed her to return to Keeneland for the $250,000 Toroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2). Spiced Perfection stumbled at the start but still scored by a head over class fllies such as Dawn the Destroyer, Mia Mischief, and Chalon.

land November sale but failed to meet her reserve when she brought $1,350,000. “It’s a tough call when you have a nice horse because part of you believes that you’re supposed to sell at the right times and treat it like a business,” Wachtel said. “But she’s such a special flly. We were not unhappy with having to race her again. Her residual value isn’t going anywhere if we sell her next November instead, and there’s the opportunity to earn money with her this year.” Spiced Perfection proved her mettle once again a month after the sale, winning the $252,250 Go for Wand Stakes (G3) over a mile at Aqueduct. Te flly she defeated that day, Saguaro Row, came right back to win the Interborough Stakes a month later. “She gave us a nice cushion to the postsale situation,” Wachtel said. In 2019 Spiced Perfection went three for six with a second-place efort for earnings of $592,000. She has a total of nine wins, fve seconds, and two thirds in 21 starts for earnings of $1,223,705. Spiced Perfection was originally slated to run two turns at Santa Anita for her 2020 debut, but ultimately scratched and ended up in the Inside Information Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park, where she fnished fourth. “She didn’t run her A-race, or even her B-race, frankly,” Wachtel said. “We would love to pick out seven-furlong spots and follow the map from last year, such as the Humana Distaf, and maybe even the Ballerina at Saratoga. But we don’t have to go after races like that. We just want to put her in places she can win, which means we could even run against Cal-breds locally. We will keep our options open.” Te big goal is the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, which in 2020 takes place at Keeneland. “Hopefully, she’ll stay healthy for us all the way until then,” Wachtel said, “and then she can go back in the sale in November.” “She’s an amazing mare,” Deutsch said. “She has been tested at various tracks and various distances, and she has battled. We couldn’t be more pleased with the results and progress she has shown. She has a huge heart.”

im Henry grew up in Sanger, Calif., near the Johnston family’s Old English Rancho. He became good friends with Jonny Hilvers, grandson of E.W. (Buddy) Johnston and great-grandson of Old English founder E. B. Johnston. Not surprisingly, Henry fell in love with racehorses, particularly after seeing the Johnston family’s homebred Acclamation win the 2011 TVG Pacifc Classic Stakes (G1) at Del Mar. that Henry and Old English have collaborated on Acclimate, a son of Acclamation and voted the California-bred champion older male and turf horse of 2019. Henry visited Old English regularly to see a young horse he owned. Much as he liked his horse, Acclimate was in the same pasture and just stood out. “I couldn’t let him go,” said Henry. “Acclimate looked awesome.” Initially, Henry kept an eye on Acclimate so that he could be sure to bet on the colt once he had reached the racetrack. Ten Henry found out that Old English, which bred Acclimate in partnership with Sal and

Acclimate went through the ring as part of Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency consignment, and Henry purchased him for $30,000. With Hilvers now managing Old English as well as the horse division of John Harris’ Harris Farms, it was natural for the family to get back in on Acclimate, who races in the names of the Ellwood Johnston Trust and Henry’s Timmy Time Racing. Besides, Acclimate descends from generations of Old English breeding on both

or just the fourth time in California racing history, a pair of horses shared a year-end title. Both El Tigre Terrible and Phantom Boss were named co-champions in the category of 2-year-old male, which is a division that has never before seen a tie. Te last time an award was shared, it was between California Flag and Dancing in Silks for Horse of the Year in 2009. For El Tigre Terrible, the honor came after winning three of his five starts, including the $101,755 Speakeasy Stakes, for Nick Cosato’s Slam Dunk Racing and Michael Nentwig. Martin Bach bred the
son of Smiling Tiger—King City Kitty, by Gotham City, in California. Trainer Peter Miller unveiled El Tigre Terrible in May at Santa Anita in a 41∕2-furlong dash, where the bay gelding finished fifth. Two months later he was dropped to the $50,000 maiden claiming level at Del Mar and led almost every step of the way to win as the favorite. He finished third at Del Mar Aug. 10 before scoring Sept. 1 in a 51∕2-furlong starter optional claiming event on the main track. Te Speakeasy Stakes, run at Santa Anita Oct. 6 over five furlongs on the grass, drew the likes of now graded stakesplaced Ginobili and the classy Cal-bred Miller-trained filly Bulletproof One. El Tigre Terrible was a 23-1 outsider, but took to the turf well and rallied from last in a 10-horse field to win the race by a

Slam Dunk Racing bought El Tigre Terrible for $18,000 at the 2018 Barretts yearling and mixed sale from Sue Greene’s Woodbridge Farm. As for sire Smiling Tiger, El Tigre Terrible is one of five champions who have won 12 titles in just three of the stallion’s crops to race. A grade 1 winner of $1,480,704, Smiling Tiger also sired dual California Horse of the Year Spiced Perfection, 2018 champion 2-year-old male Cruel Intention, and 2019 Washington Horse of the Year Baja Sur. His son Ace Korea was the champion 3-year-old male in that country last year. “Tiger is doing so well, it’s ridiculous,” said stallion owner Phil Lebherz. “We’re really excited about what is going on with him. He has 17% stakes horses from starters, and 14% of his starters have earnings over $100,000.” Smiling Tiger, who stands at Harris Farms in Coalinga, has progeny earnings of more than $5.6 million and 65% winners from starters. El Tigre Terrible’s dam, King City Kitty, was a stakes-placed, five-time winner in California. She was bred back to Smiling Tiger for the fifth time for the 2020 foaling season after being sold to Larry Odbert for $7,000 at the California Toroughbred Breeders Association January mixed sale in 2019 while in foal to Smiling Tiger. King City Kitty’s other foals to race include a winning daughter of Tannersmyman named Tanner’s Kitty and a four-time winner by Roi Charmant named Ourprincessmelanie. Since going to Smiling Tiger exclusively, King City Kitty has produced El Tigre Terrible and the two-time winner Lista Lucca.

“Tere was nowhere to run him,” Lovingier said. “It sounded like a good idea to take a road trip.” Te road trip proved fruitful, ultimately ending with Phantom Boss’ being named California’s champion 2-yearold male alongside co-champion El Tigre Terrible. Lovingier owns the son of Shackleford—Bossy Belle, by Street Boss, with Bada Beng Racing, Tom Beckerle, and Amanda Navarro. Jorge Periban trains Phantom Boss. Te target of the road trip was the $125,000 Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., June 29. It was the 118th edition of the Bashford Manor, a longtime staple of the Churchill Downs spring meeting. “Most people don’t realize how prestigious that race is,” Lovingier said. “Te list of big-name winners is long.” Six horses have run in the Bashford Manor and gone on to win the Kentucky Derby the following spring. Classic Empire won the race en route to a victory in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) in 2016 while Favorite Trick scored during his Horse of the Year season in 1997. In the Bashford Manor, Phantom Boss broke mid-pack in an eight-horse feld and then took the lead four wide into the stretch. Despite having been bumped twice, Phantom Boss held on to win by three-quarters of a length under Rafael Bejarano, completing the six furlongs in 1:10.78. Te horse who fnished second,

holula Lips is a deserving champion,” Terry Lovingier said after hearing the good news that his homebred flly had been named California’s champion 2-year-old female. “She competed all year long, ran against a lot of really good horses, and didn’t duck anybody.” Cholula Lips, by the well-bred stallion Empire Way and out of the Rio Verde mare Sweet Lips Pooh, became the second champion 2-year-old female for Lovingier in six years after homebred My Fiona took the honor in 2014. Cholula Lips started seven times in 2019, with two wins and two seconds for $159,250 in earnings. She raced at four diferent racetracks in two diferent states, competing against both California-breds and open company. Lovingier owns her in partnership with Amanda Navarro. Te Mike Harrington trainee debuted May 24 at Santa Anita in a 41∕2-furlong maiden special weight contest. She shocked the feld by 31∕4 lengths at 21-1. “He has done so well with modest mares,” said Alexander. “And Grazen’s runners are very versatile.” Lieutenant Dan proves Alexander’s point. During his championship run last year, Lieutenant Dan won two stakes on the dirt and an allowance optional claim-
ing race on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic surface. He also fnished third in two turf stakes. Alexander bred Lieutenant Dan from the Indian Charlie mare Excusabull, a fourtime winner in 14 starts and a minor stakes winner at Yavapai Downs in Arizona. Alexander bought her from Mike Allen, manager of Tommy Town Toroughbreds, where Grazen stands. Excusabull has produced three winners by Old Topper, a $125,330 earner by Tribal Rule, and a $113,902 earner by Ministers Wild Cat. She has three foals by Grazen. “I put the curse on one of them by naming her Easy to Forget,” said Alexander. “It turned out that she was very easy to forget.” Tat Grazen flly did win two claiming races at Arapahoe Park in Colorado but only earned $9,324. California-bred Not Unusual, a winning daughter of Unusual Heat and the dam of Mucho Unusual, had her frst success as a broodmare when bred to Mr. Big. George Krikorian owns both horses and stood Mr. Big in Kentucky before bringing him to California. Not Unusual produced four foals by Mr. Big during the stallion’s Kentucky years, including Big Score, a twotime stakes winner and earner of $639,372, and stakes-placed Unusually Big. Te mare’s ability to produce good runners led Krikorian to breed her to 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Mucho Macho Man. “He’s a really good-looking horse, and he has an incredible record,” Krikorian said. “I thought it was a good cross, so I thought we’d take a chance.” Because Krikorian was moving Mr. Big to California, he brought Not Unusual back to the state carrying the Mucho Macho Man foal so that he could breed the mare to Mr. Big the following year. Tus, Not Unusual’s Mucho Macho Man flly, Mucho Unusual, became a Cal-bred. Bloodstock agent Gayle Van Leer advises Krikorian, and she graded his California foal crop of 2016. “I pointed that foal out to him,” said Van Leer. “Te Mucho Macho Man was my favorite of all of them. She really was a standout.” Mucho Unusual continued to grow into a nice prospect and went into training with

She then broke her maiden and fnished second in the Golden State Juvenile Stakes. In her second start at 3 in 2019, Mucho Unusual showed such an afnity for the turf that Yakteen has since kept her on that surface exclusively. Tat performance came Feb. 18 at Santa Anita in the $200,351 California Cup Oaks, when Mucho Unusual scored by three lengths. “I had always hoped to get her on the turf, with the pedigree and knowing the family,” said Yakteen. “She has this beautiful fowing action.” Mucho Unusual added a win in an al-

Tere she successfully stepped into graded company, going of as the 5-2 favorite in the $201,755 San Clemente Stakes (G2T) July 20 and winning by a neck over fellow Cal-bred Apache Princess after running last early. In the race just before the San Clemente, Big Returns, a son of Mr. Big bred by Krikorian and owned by William Peeples, broke his maiden. “It’s great because these are Cal-breds,” said Krikorian after the San Clemente. While the San Clemente was Mucho Unusual’s fnal win of the year, she spent the rest of the season tackling the best in graded company. She came close twice, fnishing third in the $102,457 Autumn Miss Stakes (G3T) Oct. 26 and second in the $301,053 American Oaks (G1T) Dec. 28. As for Not Unusual, Krikorian sent her back to Mr. Big. Premier Thoroughbreds’ Perfect Feat repeats as California Broodmare of the year
PERFECT FEAT BY EMILY SHIELDS
N
o mare had been crowned California’s Broodmare of the Year twice until recently, when Love the Chase was honored in 2014 and 2016, and then Ashley’s Folly took the title in 2015 and 2017. Enter Perfect Feat, who has now received the award in 2018 and 2019, making her just the third two-time winner. And while winning twice is surely special, owner Phil Lebherz has a new goal: for her to become the frst mare to win it three times. Tat is a feasible achievement for Perfect Feat, who is the dam of dual grade 1-winning millionaire Spiced Perfection. “Te owners of Spiced Perfection announced this year’s Breeders’ Cup as

their goal for her, so maybe Perfect Feat can get a third Broodmare of the Year award and be the only one to do so,” Lebherz said. Perfect Feat, by Pleasantly Perfect— Bold Feat, by Capote, was the property of Lebherz’ Premier Toroughbreds. She died in 2016 at age 10, but not before producing two champions from just three foals. After foaling the unraced Acclamation flly Stake My Claim in 2014, Perfect Feat produced Spiced Perfection in 2015. Te daughter of Lebherz’ stallion Smiling Tiger is nine for 21 lifetime with $1,223,705 in earnings. She has six California championships to her credit after being named Horse of the Year, champion 3-year-old female, and sprinter for 2018, and Horse of the Year, champion older female, and sprinter for 2019. Spiced Perfection, who is owned by Pantofel Stable, Wacthel Stable, and

Peter Deutsch, counts the $301,035 La Brea Stakes (G1) and the $300,000 Madison Stakes (G1) among her seven stakes victories. In October and December of 2019, she added the Toroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) and Go for Wand Handicap (G3) to her resume. Lebherz sold her for just $6,500 as a yearling. Spiced Perfection did not meet her reserve at $1.35 million at the Keeneland November fall mixed sale in 2019. Perfect Feat’s third foal and fnal to race is Cruel Intention, also by Smiling Tiger. Owned by Jungle Racing, LNJ Foxwoods, and Nexus Racing Club, Cruel Intention was named California’s champion 2-year-old male in 2018 after winning the $196,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes. He has earned $177,710 in six starts and returned to be stakesplaced in 2019 after a seven-month layof. Although Perfect Feat is gone, Lebherz is going to try to duplicate that success. “We have four or fve other Pleasantly Perfect mares now,” he said. “We’re going to see if we can pull it of again. Tey have babies on the ground that are very nice looking.” Lebherz still appreciates Perfect Feat, saying, “Any time you get a great athlete that can produce like that, it’s great.” With two Broodmare of the Year titles, Perfect Feat has indeed proved herself one of the great broodmares.

n a year celebrating the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote in the U.S., Spiced Perfection became the only female ever to repeat as California-bred Horse of the Year. In being named to the top honor at the Feb. 25 California Toroughbred Breeders Association awards dinner, Spiced Perfection added to Sircat Sally’s 2017 Horse of the Year title, giving the girls a threeyear streak.

It takes a little time to get this far, but I’m not leaving. I’m going to do it till the day I die.” Longtime breeders such as Old English Rancho (represented by several members of the Johnston family), Terry Lovingier, Nick Alexander, George Krikorian, and Martin Bach (represented by Sue Greene) received trophies for breeding California champions. Amanda Navarro co-owns Cholula Lips and Phantom Boss, the two champions bred by Lovingier. Her gratitude refected the love and joy people get from breeding and racing horses in California. “Terry lets me follow my dreams and lets me do what I think is right,” said Navarro. She added her thanks to the team at Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch, trainers Mike Harrington and Jorge Periban, as well as her many friends at the banquet. “Tank you all for all your support—I’m very lucky,” she added.

hen a friend encouraged Jef Kitchen to try horse ownership, the longtime bettor resisted. “I had been warned,” the 71-year-old said wryly. “I knew the risks.” Kitchen had been “playing the ponies” since the early 1970s, getting involved right around the time of Secretariat’s immortal run through the Triple Crown. “Racing was a constant in my life,” the longtime construction and remodeling guru

said. “But my friend fnally prevailed.” When Kitchen gave in, a new owner and breeder in California was born. Kitchen’s frst horse, California-bred Capital Cat, had “moderate success,” with three career wins while bouncing around the claiming ranks. Kitchen owned pieces of a few lower-level claiming horses before getting involved with a horse named Coach Bob. Trained by Reina Gonzalez, the son of Bertrando—Gentleman’s Hope, by Yankee Gentleman, was a multiple stakes-placed winner of $211,367. He won four of 35 starts, with fve seconds and fve thirds, competing in races such as the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) and San Francisco Mile (G3T). He was second in the $75,400 Casual Lies Handicap at Pleasanton in 2013, and second by 13⁄4 lengths in the $126,000 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint Stakes a year later. At the same time that Coach Bob was on the track, Kitchen also had his frst broodmare, Pahiatua. He had campaigned her along with trainer Gonzalez and Dolores Silva, and when it came time for the threetime winning daughter of Tribal Rule—Agua de Mayo, by Mr. Greeley, to retire, Kitchen had a grand plan. “Around then we were noticing the success of a 2-year-old named California Chrome,” Kitchen said. “I thought, ‘Gee, maybe we should try that.’ So we bred Pahiatua to Lucky Pulpit three months before the Kentucky Derby.” California Chrome, a son of Lucky Pulpit, went on to win the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1) that year, then added the Dubai World Cup (G1) as an older horse en route to earnings of $14,752,650. “We thought California Chrome was special, and he was,” Kitchen said. “Of course, we also thought we’d get our own Kentucky Derby prospect.” Just getting Pahiatua in foal proved difficult. After she fnally caught, Kitchen named the resulting colt Conceivable in honor of the trouble they’d had. “He didn’t work out,” Kitchen said. “After his third workout he bowed, and that was it for him. We found a new home for him.” But then Coach Bob was also done racing, and Kitchen’s plan grew: Why not breed

Pahiatua to Coach Bob? “Bertrando was always a favorite of mine as a racehorse,” Kitchen said. Coach Bob’s broodmare sire, Yankee Gentleman, is also the broodmare sire of indomitable runner and leading stallion American Pharoah. Although dam Gentleman’s Hope was unraced, her dam was graded stakes winner Unbridled Hope, by Unbridled, a half sister to the dams of grade 3 winner Bearpath and multiple stakes-placed runners Conquest Lemonraid and Loose On the Town. “Reina always said she really liked Coach Bob, that he was both intelligent and super-fast,” Kitchen said. “So why not try?” Kitchen admitted to having fantasies of getting books of 50 mares, but he now understands that Coach Bob will have to fght for his chance to be noticed. Te stallion himself has already started to prove worthy. From eight foals of racing age, he has had four 50

starters. All have won. “He’s had limited opportunities,” Kitchen said of the stallion, who stands at Daehling Ranch in Elk Grove. “But out of limited data, it’s pretty successful.” First Coach was the result of the initial Coach Bob—Pahiatua mating; he was a winner in 2018. A full sister,

Habobanero, came next and already has a 2020 victory to her credit at Golden Gate Fields. Fiesty Coach scored on the synthetic surface at Golden Gate, while two-time winner Smokin Hot Bobbie won in allowance optional claiming company on New Year’s Day, leading to a start in the $202,000 California Cup Oaks. “Tat was a major disappointment,” Kitchen said of the Oaks; Smokin Hot Bobbie fnished last in a tough feld. “But as a horse owner, we like to cling to any excuse, and we think she had an abscess that was afecting her. And one thing I like about Reina is that she’s not afraid to swing for the fences.” He cited the Bing Crosby at Del Mar with Coach Bob as an example: “We were facing horses like Comma to the Top and Goldencents, and Coach Bob was leading for half the race before fading. If he broke better that day, maybe he could have hit the board against those horses.” Kitchen is involved with both Habobanero and Smokin Hot Bobbie, and he also has an unraced sophomore getting ready to debut. He still owns Pahiatua, who has a yearling flly by Coach Bob named Sis Boom Bob, and he bred the mare back to that stallion for 2020. Te four Coach Bob runners to date have earned more than $152,000, with an average earnings per starter of $38,197. “It’s a pretty good start,” Kitchen said. “If all goes well, there will be more runners coming in the next year.” Now that he has dabbled in betting, owning, and breeding, Kitchen is on a roll in California. “It’s been an adventure, or an education, anyway,” he said. “I’ve been very fortunate to get this far and do as well as I have. I’m grateful for the success I’ve had.” If Coach Bob’s early stats are any indication, there will be plenty of future success ahead.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through February 23, 2020.

We didn’t just design the 6M Series Tractors with you in mind. We designed them with you by our side. Before we even hit the drawing board, we talked with farmers, fleet owners and more to learn what they need in a mid-size utility tractor. Visit your John Deere dealer to experience the tractor you designed—with more visibility, better maneuverability and more options to fit your needs.
The 6M. Reimagined by you. For you.
To learn more on how CTBA members can save up to 28% on a wide array of John Deere equipment, visit www.JohnDeere.com/Equine or call the John Deere Equine Support Center at 866-678-4289.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
