CTBA MIXED SALE AND CALIFORNIA CUP ARE RESILIENT

his past month the CTBA hosted and coordinated two important events for California breeders: the January mixed sale, and the 31st running of California Cup. With the current COVID protocols in place in Los Angeles County, both events were conducted very diferently than in the past (to say the least). Te mixed sale held at Fairplex in Pomona had to be conducted completely outdoors, with limited seating, social distancing, masks worn at all times, and no food or beverage ofered. We, along with Fairplex, explained that we were conducting an essential livestock auction and everyone would adhere to the protocols in place. Te outdoor setup was well received by the majority of consignors and buyers as they expressed appreciation for our eforts. Most were very surprised that we even would be allowed to have a sale in Southern California. With a much smaller on-site crowd due to everything men-

tioned above regarding the current protocols, the fnal numbers were on par with the past few years. In fact, the slight increase in average price yielded the highest amount since we took over the sale three years ago. Tis was the frst CTBA-hosted sale that ofered online bidding for buyers, and although it was cumbersome and confusing to many, the online platform did signifcantly drive sales. We have communicated with the program developer concerning the many issues and obstacles that potential viewers and buyers had, and have a commitment from them to simplify the process for future sales. In fact, we are also planning tutorial sessions in the near future for all those interested in learning how to utilize the online bidding platform. On another subject, California Cup at Santa Anita was also conducted under similar protocols, limiting the overall experience of

an established special event. With very large felds in every race, total purses well over $1 million, and 80 degree sunny weather in January, the only thing missing was the fans. As horse owners are permitted to attend when their horses are competing, it was good to see and hear them rooting for their equine connections. Te total handle, even with very little currently allowed to be wagered on-track or at satellite facilities, was still over $11 million, primarily through the Advance Deposit Wagering providers and out-of-state bets. A special thank you goes out to TVG for its support and promotion of the day. We would also like to acknowledge our sponsors, City National Bank and John Deere, for sticking with us even without the traditional on-track experience that they had grown accustomed to. Here’s looking forward to hosting these two events again next January with more certainty and normalcy.

California-bred Capo Kane impressively won the $145,500 Jerome Stakes, a listed race, at Aqueduct on New Year’s Day. Bing Cherry Racing and Leonard Liberto own Capo Kane, who Cal-bred Capo Cane sets foot on Derby Trail was making the third start of his career in the one-mile Jerome. Dylan Davis piloted the bay colt for trainer Harold Wyner. Capo Cane led from right after the start and scored by 61⁄4 lengths in 1:38.02. Te race earned Capo Kane 10 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby (G1). Rising Star Farm bred Capo Kane, a son of Street Sense— Twirl Me, by Hard Spun. Te colt went through four sales, twice as a yearling and twice as a 2-year-old. Liberto purchased him from Paul Sharp for $26,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old sale. Capo Kane made his frst two starts at Parx Racing in Pennsylvania. Second in his debut, he broke his maiden by 41⁄2 lengths at a mile and 70 yards. Te Jerome was his frst start in New York.

QUALIFYING CLAIMING LEVELS The following claiming levels for California owners premiums and stallion awards are currently in effect:

Pacifc Heat Sells for $150,000 California-bred multiple stakes winner Pacifc Heat sold in foal to Omaha Beach for $150,000 in the Jan. 11 session of the Keeneland January mixed sale. Harris Farms and Donald Valpredo bred Pacifc Heat, a 2013 daughter of Unusual Heat—Hotlantic, by Stormy Atlantic. Avocet Bloodstock, through Betz Toroughbreds, purchased the mare, who has a Ghostzapper 2-year-old colt and a Jimmy Creed yearling colt. During her racing career Pacifc Heat campaigned for a partnership headed by Joe Ciaglia, who bought her as a yearling for $175,000 at the 2014 Barretts October sale from Harris Farms. Pacifc Heat was voted champion Cal-bred 2-year-old female of 2015, when she won the Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes. Te following year she scored in the Xpressbet California Cup Oaks and Evening Jewel Stakes, ultimately earning $381,185.

CALIFORNIA STAKES GET GRADED STATUS CHANGE The Palos Verdes Stakes and Las Virgenes Stakes were downgraded from grade 2 to grade 3 events, and the Senator Ken Maddy Stakes lost its grade 3 status for 2021, all at Santa Anita. The CTT and TOC Stakes at Del Mar and the Desert Code Stakes at Santa Anita were upgraded to listed status. The Palos Verdes, which was run Jan. 23, is for 4-year-olds and up at six furlongs on the dirt. The Las Virgenes is for 3-yearold fllies at a mile on the dirt. It is slated for Feb. 6. The Maddy, usually run in October, is for 3-year-olds and up, fllies and mares, and was conducted over 51⁄2 furlongs on turf last year. The CTT and TOC, usually run in August, is for 3-year-olds and up, fllies and mares, at 13⁄8 miles turf. The Desert Code, scheduled for June 6, is for 3-year-olds at six furlongs on the turf. The American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association determines the graded stakes schedule each year.

THOROUGHBRED CONNECT AVAILABLE DIGITALLY Contact information submitted through The Jockey Club’s Thoroughbred Connect program is now available when a certifcate manager accesses a horse’s digital certifcate of foal registration. Thoroughbred Connect enables people with an Interactive Registration (IR) account to express their willingness to be contacted by someone in possession of a Thoroughbred in the event the horse is in need of aftercare or assistance. It is also a resource for horse owners to list a Thoroughbred that is in need of aftercare or assistance. With this update contact information for those who would like to help a specifc Thoroughbred is displayed by default on a horse’s digital certifcate page. Thoroughbred Connect users can elect to opt out of this setting at any time. Contact information associated with horses born prior to 2018, and who thus might not have a digital certifcate, can still be shared with a successful connection made via the Thoroughbred Connect link after logging into IR. Since Thoroughbred Connect’s introduction in May 2011, more than 3,500 users have signed up for it. There are currently more than 8,600 horses in the system that have at least one customer who has provided contact information to indicate their willingness to provide aftercare assistance. Heartwood, a 6-year-old multiple stakes winner by Tapit, is entering stud for 2021 at Rancho San Miguel at the conclusion of his racing career. The $486,891-earner will stand for $2,500. Heartwood, who raced for the partnership of Stuart Tsujimoto and David Bernsen, has won or placed in six black-type races at six different racetracks. Bred in Kentucky by Blue Heaven Farm, Heartwood sold for $500,000 as Heartwood the highest-priced weanling at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale. He won three stakes from 3-6: the $200,000 Steel Valley Sprint Stakes at Mahoning Valley Race Course in 2017, the $75,000 Senator Robert C. Byrd Memorial Stakes at Mountaineer Park in 2018, and the $100,000 King Cotton Stakes at Oaklawn Park in 2019. He placed in three 2018 stakes: the $206,100 Fall Highweight Handicap (G3), $100,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes (G3), and $101,800 Bet on Sunshine Stakes. Heartwood is the frst foal out of Forestry’s grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Maple Forest. The mare is a daughter of the grade 2-placed stakes winner Maple Syrple and a half sister to French group 3 winner Golden Century.

■ Bodexpress to Barton Grade 1 stakes winner Bodexpress has been retired from racing and will enter stud for the 2021 season at Barton Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez for $5,000. A 5-year-old son of Bodemeister out of the City Zip mare Pied a Terre, Bodexpress retires with lifetime earnings of $694,600. He most recently captured the Nov. 27 Clark Stakes Presented by Norton Healthcare (G1), where he defeated Code of Honor. Bodexpress placed in Bodexpress four stakes, including a second to Maximum Security in the 2019 Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1). Bodemeister has also sired Always Dreaming, the winner of the 2017 Kentucky Derby (G1). Both Always Dreaming and Bodexpress have shown that they were able to carry their front-running speed over a distance of ground. Julio Rada of Platinum Bloodstock brokered the deal and was critical in the securing of the new stallion for Barton Thoroughbreds.

A new purse enhancement program that will inject up to $15 million into California Thoroughbred purses in 2021 and 2022 was announced in mid-January by the Thoroughbred Owners of California, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, The Stronach Group’s 1/ST Racing, and FanDuel Group’s TVG. Purses suffered in 2020 due to the pandemic, which caused the cessation of live racing in California during part of the year and ongoing restrictions in on-site attendance due to public health requirements. The parties to the agreement believed that working together on additional sponsorship and purse enhancements would help support the state’s racing industry. Wagering during the pandemic has largely migrated to advance deposit wagering platforms. Greg Aveoli in a BloodHorse interview noted that California ADW handle rose from $600 million in 2019 to more than $1 billion in 2020. Avioli said that TOC notifed the ADW companies of its desire to work for more equitable agreements as regards to purses under the current situation. BloodHorse wrote: “ADW companies such as WatchandWager and Game Play Network agreed to alter hub fees, and others such as NYRA Bets, 1/ST Racing’s Xpressbet, and TVG reached a commercial business resolution also favorable to purses, Avioli said. ‘We couldn’t reach an agreement with TwinSpires so earlier this week we fled for arbitration,’ he added. Bettors wishing to bet on California racing via TwinSpires, an ADW owned by Churchill Downs Incorporated, will not be affected while awaiting the conclusion of the arbitration, Avioli said.” In anticipation of the new program, Santa Anita announced a 10% across-the-board purse increase for its 2020-21 winter/ spring meeting. And with the support of these purse enhancements, Del Mar is projected to increase average daily purse levels at its summer meeting to more than $600,000 in 2021, Del Mar offcials indicated.

■ First Foal for Om California stallion and multiple graded winner Om had his frst reported foal Jan. 18 at Harris Farms in Coalinga. Bred by Al and Saundra Kirkwood, the chestnut flly is the third foal from the Unusual Heat allowance winner All the Heat, who is a full sister to Infamed, dam of grade I winner Mo Forza. Om defeated Triple Crown winner American Pharoah when he broke his maiden at 2 in 2014 and continued to Om’s frst foal, a flly at Harris Farms excel at 3 through his 7-year-old season. He won four graded races, including the 2015 Del Mar Derby (G2T) and Twilight Derby (G2T). His stakes-placings included two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T). Om set a course record for 51⁄2 furlongs at Churchill Downs and retired with earnings of $1,355,082. Om stands at Harris Farms for $6,000 and is the property of the Sareen Family Trust and Harris Farms.

■ Surf Cat to Rancho San Miguel

Surf Cat, a multiple grade 2-winning millionaire and the sire of 2017 California Horse of the Year Sircat Sally, will stand at Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel for 2021 for $2,500. A 19-year-old son of Storm Cat’s multiple graded stakes winner Sir Cat, Surf Cat has stood exclusively in California since his retirement from racing in 2009. Originally, he stood at historic Old English Rancho and most recently at a small, private farm near Chowchilla. Surf Cat has progeny earnings of $4,046,140. His fve black-type runners include 2017 Cal-bred Horse of Surf Cat the Year Sircat Sally, a $552,860-earner who won three graded turf stakes, and dual grade 3 winner San Onofre, an earner of $402,730. Trained by the late Bruce Headley, Surf Cat won six grade 2 races from 2005 through 2008. He also ran second by a head in the 2007 Triple Bend Invitational Handicap (G1) en route to earning $1,045,420. Produced from the Centrust mare Trust Greta, Surf Cat hails from the family of leading sire Broad Brush.

Memoriam

Harold Tillema Harold Tillema, breeder of California-bred champion Richard’s Boy with his wife, Pamela, died Dec. 6 at age 75. Many of the Tillemas’ good horses descend from Theresa’s Pleasure, winner of the 1990 California Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes and the third dam of Richard’s Boy. They bred Richard’s Boy, a 2012 son of Idiot Proof—Marissa’s Joy, by Cee’s Tizzy, and raced him through his frst three starts, which he won, before selling him privately to Gary Hartunian’s Rockingham Ranch. Richard’s Boy went on to earn a total of $1,009,724 and win four stakes, including the 2017 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint. He was voted champion Cal-bred sprinter of that year. Tillema grew up in Southern California and milked cows from the age of 14. He met Pamela when they attended Chino High School, and they married in 1963. The Tillemas ultimately bought their own dairy in Chino, a business they remained in for Harold’s entire life. He encouraged his children and

grandchildren to participate in 4H with cows, and he often named his racehorses after family members. In addition to his wife, Tillema is survived by their son, Richard; daughters Julie and Lisa; several grandchildren; and several siblings.

Luis Leon Luis Leon, a jockeys’ room valet and former jockey who once rode for California owner/breeder Rex Ellsworth, died Dec. 29 at age 90. A popular valet, Leon worked for such top riders as Eddie Delahoussaye, Patrick Valenzuela, Martin Pedroza, Rafael Meza, and David Flores. He rode for Ellsworth during the heyday of that stable in the 1950s and 1960s, when major California-breds such as Swaps, Prove It, and Olden Times were racing. Following his retirement from the jockeys’ room, Leon and his wife, Juanita, lived on his ranch southeast of San Diego, where he grew fruit trees and raised cattle. Her victory in the $50,000 El Diario Stakes Feb. 12, 2011, was her third consecutive stakes win in New Mexico, following the Chaves County Stakes and Zia Park Distaff Stakes. In the 61⁄2-furlong El Diario, when ridden by Alejandro Medellin, Hayley’s Halo led throughout to defeat Tornado Betty by two lengths, with favored She’smylittleman third. Final time was 1:15.61. Henry Dominguez trained the 4-year-old daughter of Sea of Secrets—Hilo Halo, by Peaks and Valleys for owner/breeder Lathrop Hoffman. Hayley’s Halo eventually won 11 of 20 starts for total earnings of $365,060.

It was War Heim’s second stakes victory, following the previous season’s Del Mar Derby. He would also win the 1972 Miller High Life Inglewood Handicap and 1974 Cabrillo Handicap and earn a total of $292,565. Dale Landers trained War Heim for Hazel Huffman, who had purchased the mare and foal after they were advertised for sale in this magazine. Bruce Headley

It was typical of the man to invite the entire racing industry, and many of them showed up, including Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron. Te Jack Russell Jamboree had a racecourse set up, and everyone had a wonderful time watching those high-energy dogs race down the chute, sometimes even jumping over obstacles. A terrifc host, Headley enjoyed the day immensely. After all, he knew everyone. So it was with sadness that the industry learned that Headley died Jan 15 at age 86 from the efects of a stroke. A Southern California-based trainer since 1959, Headley was best known for training Eclipse Award winner Kona Gold. However, he also trained many talented California-breds, in many cases breeding and owning them as well. He was inducted into the CTBA Hall of Fame in 2015. Headley began his career at California’s Suzy Q Ranch in 1948, along with future Hall of Fame jockey Bill Shoemaker. Tough he soon became too big to be a jockey, Headley galloped and worked his horses most of his life. His frst stakes winner was California-bred Poonastar, and he was also the frst trainer of Bertrando, a Cal-bred champion, national champion, and top California sire. Headley trained Silveyville, Cal-bred Horse of the Year of 1984, bringing him back several times after he stood at stud. Softshoe Sure Shot, champion Cal-bred sprinter of 1993, was one of many that Headley trained for the Johnston family’s Old English Rancho. He was a good friend of the late Buddy Johnston.

ne day in 1992, word came into the California Toroughbred Breeders Association ofce: Trainer Bruce Headley was organizing Jack Russell terrier races at his home in Arcadia.

In later years, Headley stood millionaire Surf Cat at Old English after training the horse for his wife, Aase, and Marsha Naify. He also stood Cyclotron at Old English and trained the stallion’s son Cyclometer, a Cal-bred graded stakes winner and earner of $477,004. Headley bred and owned Cyclometer with Irwin and Andrew Molasky. He raced Kona Gold with the Molaskys, having purchased the son of Java Gold—Double Sunrise, by Slew o’ Gold, for only $35,000 at the 1995 Keeneland September yearling sale. Kona Gold competed in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) fve times, winning in 2000, running second in 1999, and running third in 1998. He earned $2,293,384, and after his racing career, Headley rode him as a stable pony. Other graded winners Headley trained included Street Boss, Kalookan Queen, Got Koko, and Son of a Pistol. He saddled the winners of 970 races for purse

earnings of more than $38 million. Headley brought his entire family into the business. Aase is a longtime owner, and both of their adult children, Karen and Gus, are trainers. Headley practiced the “hay, oats, and water” philosophy throughout his career, and he brought horses to the track after doing all the work with them himself. “He loved horses,” said Karen. “He’d go to Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton, take his own money, stay throughout the whole sale, fnd a horse that looked like a pure athlete, bring him to his backyard that was a postage stamp, gallop the horse himself, and work him himself. He got them to the races and won numerous graded races.” McCarron, who rode many horses for Headley, called the trainer “a throwback to the old days, a pure horseman through and through, an excellent caretaker, a great family man, and a heck of a human being.”

Cal-bred honors are awarded to the breeder(s) of each category, a tradition that the CTBA inaugurated in 1973. Te categories are Horse of the Year, 2-year-old male, 2-year-old female, 3-year-old male, 3-year-old female, older male, older female, sprinter, and turf horse. While the Cal-bred awards are usually given at the annual CTBA awards dinner, the dinner will not be held this year due to the pandemic. However, the CTBA will still award each divisional champion a lovely bronze, and California Toroughbred will print articles on each champion as part of the March 2021 issue of the magazine. Ferraro Serves Entire Industry Te California Toroughbred Foundation has many dedicated trustees, who work to further the organization’s mission. Dr. Greg Ferraro is one who served the Foundation for many years before he moved on to help the Toroughbred industry on an even bigger scale. Today Ferraro is the chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, and the industry is lucky to have someone of his experience in that Ferraro capacity. A former racetrack veterinarian and an equine orthopedic surgeon, Ferraro spent years as director of the Center for Equine Health at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. He also served as the frst president of the Southern California Equine Foundation, which runs the equine hospitals at California racetracks. With John Kimsey he developed the Kimsey Splint, which stabilizes lower-leg injuries. Ferraro has dedicated his career to equine safety in every role he has taken on. While on the Foundation board, he was instrumental in the process of determining worthy candidates for the veterinary scholarships and fellowships that the Foundation awards. Many of those recipients have gone on to careers in caring for Toroughbred racehorses.

orth County Guy loves his goat so much that when trainer Richard Baltas brings the gelding to a racetrack from where he is stabled at San Luis Rey Downs, the goat comes also. Te trip paid of when North County Guy won the $201,500 Unusual Heat Turf Classic Presented by City National Bank Jan. 16, California Cup day, at Santa Anita. Baltas claimed North County Guy for $20,000 in 2018 for Little Red Feather Racing and Nancy Messineo. A 3-yearold at the time, North County Guy turned out to be a nervous stall walker. “I told my assistant, Ruben (Losa), to stick him in an outside pen at San Luis Rey,” said Baltas. “But that wasn’t enough—he needed a goat.” Te goat calmed North County Guy, and Baltas switched the California-bred gelded son of Te Pamplemousse— Warmth, by Unusual Heat, to the turf. “He was a horse bred for the turf,” Baltas said. “Dr. (Ed) Allred bred the mare, and Dr. Allred bred this horse. Te other one that came out of the claiming ranks too is Cordiality. She’s been a very solid flly. I never thought that this horse would turn out to be as good as he is.” Allred also bred Cordiality from

Cal-bred North County Guy scores his ﬁrst stakes win in the Unusual Heat Turf Classic

Warmth. A Cal-bred multiple stakes-winning daughter of Papa Clem, Cordiality has earned $632,863, most recently fnishing third in the 2020 Kathryn Crosby Stakes. Bruce Sands joined the North County Guy partnership a couple of starts after the claim, and the gelding started earning regular paychecks in allowance turf company. Because that particular LRF partnership was designed as a one-year claiming operation, at the end of 2019, Messineo and Sands bought out LRF privately. In six 2020 starts North County Guy fnished frst once and twice second in three allowance/optional claimers and unplaced in three graded stakes. Te Unusual Heat Turf Classic Presented by City National Bank looked like a good spot for him, except for one problem: He hadn’t been nominated to the Golden State Stakes program. It took $25,000 to make North County Guy eligible to the GSS program, but that is good for the rest of his career. Te strategy paid of handsomely, as North County Guy eked out a narrow victory and earned a $110,000 paycheck.

Eleven entered the starting gate for the stakes, named for the perennial leading California sire. Unusual Heat is not only the broodmare sire of North County Guy, he is the paternal grandsire of entrants Acclimate and Heck Yeah, both by Acclimation. Acclimate went of as the 19-10 favorite in the 11∕8-mile turf event. North County Guy was the 4-1 second choice. Cono few to a long early lead but ultimately couldn’t sustain it. Jockey Mario Gutierrez positioned North County Guy in ffth. North County Guy raced there comfortably until Gutierrez called upon him in the second turn. As Cono began to fade, Acclimate took over the lead. Racing four wide, North County Guy ranged up to pass Acclimate. Heck Yeah closed relentlessly, but North County Guy held him of by a neck in 1:46.34. “When it was time to go, I let him go a bit wide,” said Gutierrez. “When I asked him, he responded really well.” Acclimate held on for third. A 50-cent trifecta on the three grandsons of Unusual Heat—a hunch bet if there ever was one—paid $202.80.

SWITCH TO DIRT RESULTS IN CAL CUP DERBY VICTORY Big Fish, a son of Mr. Big, wins Cal Cup Derby for Pete and Evelyn Parrella’s Legacy Ranch

ete Parrella has been in the horse racing industry for nearly 50 years, but that doesn’t mean he and wife Evelyn weren’t screaming at the television during the California Cup Derby. Teir Big Fish made a sweeping move from the back of the pack to win the $200,000 race, bringing immense joy to his owners.

“My wife and I were yelling like he was the frst horse we ever had,” Parrella said. Big Fish, a sophomore son of Mr. Big and the stakes-placed Into Mischief mare Perched bred by George Krikorian in California, has always had talent. But he had gone through a string of frustrating races. After breaking his maiden at Del Mar in August, he won the $102,500 Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes by a length. He ran ffth in both the $101,000 Zuma Beach Stakes and $103,000 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes (G3T) before fnishing fourth in the Eddie Logan Stakes Dec. 27. All of those races were on the grass. “Tere was nowhere else to run,” Parrella said of the switch to dirt for the Derby. “We fgured it was better than 28

working and working without racing.” Tat wasn’t the only change for Big Fish, who switched to jockey Juan Hernandez and put the blinkers back on. Te combination worked terrifcally, as the dark bay gelding scored by 11∕2 lengths in the 11∕16-mile race, stopping the clock in 1:46.37. He ran past None Above the Law in second and favored Good With People in third. Te scratch of favored Te Chosen Vron helped with the shape of the race. “We got lucky with the scratch, but at frst I was worried,” said Parrella. “I wasn’t sure if there would be enough speed in the race. I thought we would have a chance if the speed horses dueled, but the scratch changed the whole race. It ended up setting up for us anyway. We were very fortunate.” Parrella was quick to give credit to everyone involved with the horse, from trainer David Hofmans to ranch manager Terry Knight. “Terry deserves all the credit for picking him out of the Northern California yearling sale,” Parrella said. “We topped the sale at $45,000, and all my wife and I did was sign the check.” Te purchase has paid of, as Big Fish has earned $229,018 with three wins, a

second, and a third in eight starts. “I’m also happy for Mr. Big, and George Krikorian, who owns him,” Parrella added. “He’s such a great ambassador to the Cal-bred program, and we are just happy to be a small part of it.” California Cup day was a huge success for the Parrellas and their Legacy Ranch in Clements, as Clubhouse Ride, who stands at the ranch, sired the winner of the Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint, Brickyard Ride. “It was a very good day for the ranch,” Parrella said. “You need that sometimes because it’s a tough game. I was tickled for the staf, the gallop boys, everyone watching on TV. People don’t realize just how difcult it is to get a horse to the races: three years and all the trials and tribulations, all the work that goes into it. You’re just trying to break your maiden, but when you go on to win a stakes race, you have to take your hat of to a lot of people.” Parrella, the immediate past chairperson and current vice chairperson of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association, added, “We would like to continue to support the Cal-bred program with him. We will keep him in against Cal-breds if possible.”

hile John Harris always prizes success in California Cup races, he particularly wanted to win the Jan. 16 Leigh Ann Howard California Cup Oaks with California-bred Closing Remarks. Te race had been newly renamed to honor Harris’ friend and colleague Leigh Ann Howard, a former president and longtime board member of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association who died last September. Closing Remarks fulflled her owner/ breeder’s hopes, soundly defeating nine others in the $201,000 Oaks at a mile on the turf at Santa Anita. “It was a real thrill to win the frst Leigh Ann Howard California Cup Oaks,” said Harris. “She was such a great supporter and builder of the industry. She went to Cal Poly and had a very good career. She was a real success story of a woman who followed her bliss, found what she wanted to do, and did it.” Harris bred Closing Remarks from his unraced homebred Unusual Heat mare Orange Cove, named for the town where Harris runs a citrus operation, part of his vast Harris Ranch. Te flly is by

Both Vronsky and Unusual Heat frst stood at Old English Rancho before moving to Harris. “Old English has got so many ties to this horse,” said Harris, who worked to merge the two operations. Jonny Hilvers, grandson of the late E.W. Johnston of Old English, manages both facilities. He and Harris attended California Cup to witness Closing Remarks’ triumph. Carla Gaines, who has trained for Harris for many years, conditions Closing Remarks and had two others in the race for Irvin Racing Stable, including favored Sensible Cat. Closing Remarks was the second choice. Gaines had not recalled ever running three horses in the same stakes before. For Gaines, Closing Remarks broke her maiden in her debut at Del Mar last August. Over fve furlongs on turf, Closing Remarks won by a handy 21∕4 lengths. In the listed Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on the turf at Santa Anita Oct. 4, Closing Remarks ran a solid fourth. She lost all chance, however, in the Nov. 28 Jimmy Durante Stakes (G3) at a mile on the turf at Del Mar. “She’s getting better, but it was an awful trip last time,” said Gaines.

In contention, Closing Remarks tried to get through two diferent holes, once between horses and the second between the rail and another runner. In both cases she was shut of, and she ended up last. “She was running against three Chad Browns and who knows what would have happened,” said Gaines. “But honestly, I think if she gets out, she’s one, two, three.” Closing Remarks had a much smoother trip in the Oaks. Jockey Umberto Rispoli kept her in the clear in fourth around the second turn and into the stretch. Closing Remarks took dead aim on the wire and scored by a length in 1:35.62. Warrens Candy Girl, still a maiden, came from last in a good efort for second, with Super Game third. “It was nice to have a clean trip today,” said Rispoli. “Te speed was on, and she was happy where she was.” Harris, a leader in the industry and always a major participant in California Cup, was instrumental in getting the event of the ground for its inaugural running in 1990. He won his frst Cal Cup race the following year, when homebred Teresa Mc, trained by Greg Gilchrist, captured the 1991 California Cup Matron Handicap.

Te 4-year-old colt’s speed was on display Jan. 16 in the $153,000 Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint at Santa Anita, as he went to the lead and ran his 10 rivals of their feet. Te son of Clubhouse Ride—Brickyard Helen, by Southern Image, sizzled home under Alexis Centeno, setting fractions of :44.35 and :56.50 before stopping the six-furlong timer in 1:09.24. Favored Tigre Di Slugo, second, and defending champion Fashionably Fast, third, were unable to get closer than 31∕4 lengths behind the commanding winner, who gave apprentice jockey Centeno his frst stakes win. Brickyard Ride’s owner and breeder, Alfred “Sonny” Pais, and his trainer, Craig Lewis, both agreed that the horse

is naturally gifted with speed. “He’s not always the fastest breaker,” Pais said. “But if he breaks clear, he can out-accelerate most horses. And when he relaxes while extending his lead, he runs efortlessly.”

“Tat was the only time we’ve been in a pickle with him,” Pais said of the January 2020 race. “We’re just lucky he didn’t get hurt.” Brickyard Ride has reeled of fve wins in the last nine months, with a disappointing hiccup coming in a Dec. 12 allowance at Los Alamitos. Te offcial Equibase chart notes that during that outing, Brickyard Ride “stumbled, broke in and bumped rival leaving the gate, drifted inward and bumped repeatedly up the backstretch, checked between rivals entering the turn” while he faded to last. But Pais believes he had an excuse. “I talked to his groom afterwards and realized that was really the frst time he shipped in for a race,” Pais said. “Te groom had to wash him and walk him several times that day, and the horse was agitated in the gate. In the Cal Cup he was back on his home turf.” Pais owns Brickyard Ride’s dam, Brickyard Helen, in partnership with Lewis. Brickyard Helen was a four-time winner in 14 starts and is the dam of three winners from four foals to race. Her stakes-placed Formal Dinner dam Sorbet is from the female family of graded stakes-placed stakes winner Southern Tour and stakes winner Mystery’s Jules. Brickyard Ride’s 3-year-old full sister, Sweet Helena, entered training at Santa Anita last fall, and Brickyard Helen has a yearling flly by graded stakes-placed stakes winner Conquest Farenheit. She was bred back to Clubhouse Ride for 2021. Plans for Brickyard Ride are in fux, but Pais leaves that part to Lewis. “Craig is very good at looking over the spots and making the right move,” Pais said. “Te horse came out of the race well.” Brickyard Ride’s success was no surprise to Pais, who was always high on him. “I have had high hopes for him since the frst time I saw him work,” he said. “Two-year-olds come in and you can tell when they are diferent; right of the bat they want to go by somebody in a hurry. Tat’s a sign that they’ve got talent. I kept telling people he was really nice.” Now, Brickyard Ride has proved it.

illiam “Jack” Sims brings his California-breds back to his home in Evanston, Wyo., near the Utah border to raise them himself. A Bayern Cal-bred flly was growing into a leggy beauty, and so he named her Leggs Galore. Now 4 and trained by Phil D’Amato, the flly won the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Presented by John Deere Jan. 16 at Santa Anita. “Ever since she was a baby she had a lot of leg,” said Sims. “Tat’s one reason I really liked her mama. Her mama has a pretty nice hip, but she’s got a lot of leg.” Sims purchased the mare, a daughter of Indian Charlie named Cashing Tick-

ets, for $55,000 in the name of McKenzie Bloodstock at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. Cashing Tickets was carrying Leggs Galore at the time of the sale. Sims shipped Cashing Tickets to NexStar Ranch in California, where he was standing his stallion Stormberg, since moved to Kentucky. Cashing Tickets now has a 3-year-old flly by Stormberg and a yearling flly by Into Mischief. But Leggs Galore nearly didn’t get to the races. “Tat baby got stepped on,” said Sims. “She was still in California. Either her mama or another mare in the pasture stepped on her. I almost didn’t register her, and I thought about giving her away.” Sims and his farrier kept working with the flly, however, and she completely recovered.

“She was never sore on it,” Sims said. “But I didn’t know if she could take training. She raced on dirt twice at Oaklawn Park in the spring of 2020 without a win, but since returning to her native state and switching to turf, she has never lost. She broke her maiden at fve furlongs on the grass Aug. 7 at Del Mar and picked up two more wins in allowance/ optional claimer events, the latter against open company. Leggs Galore made her stakes debut in the Turf Sprint. Graded winner Warren’s Showtime, who captured the 2020 California Cup Oaks, went of as the 13-10 favorite, with Leggs Galore the second choice over the likes of Betty Grable Stakes winner Mo See Cal and She’s Devoted, the latter undefeated in two lifetime starts. “We’ve been waiting for this race,” said D’Amato. “She was given a little freshening and came back in really good order.” Ricardo Gonzalez had ridden Leggs Galore in her two most recent races and was back aboard. Mo See Cal broke on top, but Leggs Galore quickly took over and dictated the pace. Leggs Galore led at every call, with a sprightly :22.84 frst quarter and :45.09 half. “I knew it was going to be hard for them to beat her,” said Gonzalez. “She was doing it so easily and running so relaxed.” Mo See Cal took a run at Leggs Galore in upper stretch, but couldn’t catch her. Tough the late runners began to close, Leggs Galore just kept widening her lead, coming to the wire 3 1∕4 lengths in front while stopping the timer in 1:08.90. Nardini got second by a half-length over Warren’s Showtime. “She runs very well fresh, and she’d been training as good as she can possibly train,” said D’Amato. “So I was expecting a big performance. But that was pretty impressive today.”

hasing Moments, a half sister to the dam of recent grade 1 winner Charlatan, topped the Jan. 6 California Toroughbred Breeders Association mixed sale at Pomona for $70,000. Tat was the highest-priced sale-topper since the CTBA took over conducting the

mixed sale in 2019.

Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Ranch sold the sale-topper, along with four of the fve other horses that brought $30,000 or higher. Tat included two mares for $40,000 each and two for $30,000 each. Te CTBA worked hard to conduct the sale, despite the challenges of the ongoing pandemic. Adjustments were made, including holding the sale outside at the Fairplex facility instead of inside in the sale ring. “It’s an important venue for California breeders, and given the current environment, we were very pleased to just be able to host the sale,” said Doug Burge, president of the CTBA. “For the frst time at Fairplex, a sale was conducted strictly out-

doors to adhere to the current protocols, and it was very well received by both the consignors and buyers. “Also, this was the frst sale that CTBA has conducted that ofered online bidding. While there are some tweaks that need to be made to the online bidding system, it was extremely popular, as 20 horses were sold online for over $250,000.” Lovingier and Adrian Gonzalez, another major consignor via his Checkmate Toroughbreds, were also pleased with the CTBA’s eforts to put on the sale. “I thought conducting the sale outside worked better than the inside myself,” said Lovingier. “For the times that we’re in, it’s amazing that we were even able to have the sale.”

Gonzalez said that as a consignor, he prepped all of his horses for the sale, even while wondering whether it would be allowed to go forward, given the pandemic restrictions. “We entered horses, prepping them like there was no turning back, took X-rays,” said Gonzalez. “But everything was getting shut down in L.A. County. I thought this was going to be rough. How awesome that it actually happened.” Gonzalez liked the outside setup, which put everyone in one location, albeit socially distanced. He said that it worked very well for the horses also. Lovingier sold most of the high-priced mares, and Gonzalez consigned the second-highest-priced horse, a $60,000 yearling, as well as the top-priced 2-year-old. Marcelo Aguera, who Lovingier says is based in Europe and breeds many horses in Kentucky, purchased the sale-topper and three other mares, all from the Lovacres consignment. Chasing Moments is a 6-year-old by Orb—Court of Appeal, by Deputy Minister, and she is in foal to Smokem. A lightly raced winner, Chasing Moments is a half sister to multiple graded winner Authenticity, whose foals include stakes winner Hanalei Moon in addition to Charlatan. Four days before the sale Charlatan turned in a spectacular performance to win the Runhappy Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita by 41⁄2 lengths. “Te guys in Kentucky all wanted her, and she’s a really nice-looking mare,” said Lovingier. “She’s going to foal here so that the baby is a Cal-bred.” California sire Stay Tirsty played a major role at the sale. He was the covering sire of two mares who brought $40,000 and two who sold for $30,000. Stay Tirsty stands at Lovacres. “He’s very productive,” said Lovingier. “He’s got that one flly back east, Dontletsweetfoolya, who has won fve straight races (including the Willa On the Move Stakes and Primonetta Stakes). He’s got that other colt, Pickin’ Time, who won the grade 3 Nashua at Aqueduct. good mare,” said Lovingier. Gonzalez pinhooked the $60,000 yearling flly from the 2020 Keeneland November sale. She cost $6,500 and then blossomed. Double Chevron Racing purchased her at the January sale. “I’ve had a lot of luck taking weanlings and bringing them to this January sale,” Gonzalez said. “She just really bloomed when she got to California and did everything right along the way.” Gonzalez, who was instrumental in bringing Sir Prancealot to California, sold Wind N Waves, a mare in foal to the stallion. Te daughter of Stormy Atlantic—Destination, by Seattle Slew, sold for $29,000 to Nick Alexander. “She’s a big, correct mare,” said Alexander, who added that he may breed Wind N Waves back to Sir Prancealot, in whom he owns a share, or to his own good California sire, Grazen. Checkmate also consigned a 2-yearold Kentucky-bred son of Union Rags— Stealing Holly, by Tapit. Te colt brought $27,000 from Royalty Stable and was the highest-priced 2-year-old. Gonzalez said he sold the colt for Jose Zulaica. A total of 87 grossed $691,300 at the sale for an average of $7,946. Tat is the highest average of the three years that the CTBA has conducted the sale.

f California-bred Mucho Unusual were human, you might think she is a big fan of the late trainer Bobby Frankel. In the span of three weeks, she won two graded races associated with the Hall of Famer—the $101,500 Robert J. Frankel Stakes (G3T) Dec. 27 and the $98,000 Megahertz Stakes (G3T) Jan. 18, a race named for one of Frankel’s top distaf runners.

California did particularly well in the Megahertz, getting the exacta when Calbred Sedamar fnished second. Mucho Unusual adores Santa Anita. In her 19 lifetime starts, 12 have come at the Great Race Place, and she has posted six wins, two seconds, and three thirds there. She’s also done it primarily in graded company. Te Frankel is the former San Gorgonio while the Megahertz was created in 2011, six years after that mare retired. Frankel won the San Gorgonio eight times prior to his death in 2009, including once with

Megahertz in 2004. Te tiny but mighty Megahertz won 14 of her 34 starts and earned $2,261,594. Like many of Frankel’s other runners, Megahertz came from Europe. Mucho Unusual, on the other hand, is homegrown. She is the frst Cal-bred to take the Frankel since it was renamed and the frst state-bred to win it since Southern Truce in 1993. Mucho Unusual is the third Calbred to win the Megahertz, following A Jealous Woman in 2013 and Dancingtothestars in 2014. “It’s so great to win these races named in honor of all these great trainers,” said Tim Yakteen, who trains Mucho Unusual for owner/breeder George Krikorian. Yakteen came up under the tutelage of two

of the greats—Charlie Whittingham and Bob Bafert. In her most recent outing at Santa Anita prior to the Frankel at 11⁄8 miles on the turf, Mucho Unusual had scored in the $300,500 Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1T) at 11⁄4 miles on turf. In between, she traveled to Kentucky, running unplaced in the $2 million Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) at Keeneland. She tired at the end of the 13⁄16-mile journey after racing forwardly early. Yakteen calls Mucho Unusual “a dream to train—so easy, so straightforward. She makes my job easy.” For the Frankel, Mucho Unusual drew post 10, which became post eight after two scratches. Yakteen admitted that the outside post was a “little bit of a concern,” but it turned out not to be an issue. Mucho Unusual got the services of East Coast rider John Velazquez, who was out for several mounts during Santa Anita’s opening weekend. She went of as the second choice behind favored Miss Teheran, an Irish-bred making her third start in the U.S. and now trained by Chad Brown. She’s Our Charm, trained by Hall of Famer Ron McAnally, set the early pace, while Velazquez was able to get Mucho Unusual out of the gate quickly and over toward the rail into second. Deep into the backstretch, Miss Teheran boldly moved up on the rail to take command. But Mucho Unusual, racing three wide, wrested the lead away on the fnal turn. Tough Never Be Enough closed ground in the stretch, Mucho Unusual held her of by three-quarters of a length in 1:46.94. She’s Our Charm saved third. “She broke good,” said Velazquez, “and it looked like the one speed flly would go and she did. Turning for home, I asked her and she fnished up great.” Tree weeks later Mucho Unusual returned for the Megahertz, a slightly shorter race at a mile, also on turf. Te change in distance didn’t look like a problem because Mucho Unusual had won three times and fnished third three times in seven attempts at a mile on the grass. “It was sort of the way the schedule came up,” said Yakteen. “We were thinking about keeping her at a mile and one eighth, mile and a quarter. Unfortunately, there really wasn’t anything coming up

until the end of March, so we thought we would take advantage of a lighter feld.” Just six horses entered, and two of them scratched. Mucho Unusual and Sedamar faced Brooke, a Chilean-bred making her frst U.S. start, and multiple graded stakes-placed Colonial Creed. Sedamar, a 5-year-old daughter of Richard’s Kid—Win Allison Win, by Stormy Atlantic, races for her breeder, Mick Ruis, and is trained by Ruis’ daughter, Shelbe. A very capable allowance runner, Sedamar in fve previous stakes tries had two seconds and two fourths. Tis was her graded stakes debut. Velazquez had returned to the East, and Joel Rosario took over aboard Mucho Unusual for the Megahertz. Umberto Rispoli piloted Sedamar. Mucho Unusual vied with Brooke right out of the gate, but Rosario let Brooke take the lead into the frst turn. “It looked like the one horse really wanted to go to the lead, so I just waited behind that one a little bit,” said Rosario. Tat strategy took them down the backstretch and into the second turn, where Brooke bore out a little, forcing Mucho Unusual a trife wide. It didn’t matter, as Mucho Unusual powered past the Chil-

ean. Sedamar put in a valiant stretch run, and though she couldn’t catch the leader, she passed Broke for second. Mucho Unusual won by three-quarters of a length, with a half-length separating Sedamar and Brooke. Mucho Unusual stopped the timer in 1:35.89. During the stretch run, Brooke came over and interfered with Colonial Creed. Te stewards disqualifed Brooke to fourth, elevating Colonial Creed to third. With the two graded victories, Mucho Unusual raised her lifetime earnings to $822,715. “She’s my queen,” said Yakteen. “We don’t have a big stable, but she’s our queen.” A daughter of Mucho Macho Man, Mucho Unusual is out of the Cal-bred Unusual Heat mare Not Unusual. Krikorian purchased Not Unusual for $67,000 at the 2007 Barretts October yearling sale. Bred by Betty and Larry Mabee, the flly won three races and earned $70,347 for Krikorian. Not Unusual has also produced graded winner Big Score, a Kentucky-bred son of Krikorian’s California sire Mr. Big. Mucho Unusual was foaled at E.A. Ranches, and the mare has two subsequent foals by Mr. Big.

Play Chicken isn’t the frst to result from the Reddams’ breeding their winning Distorted Humor mare Smoove to Square Eddie. Tat cross already had resulted in three winners, including California-bred graded stakes-placed Smoove It, winner of the 2016 Irish O’Brien Stakes and an earner of $395,910. Cal-bred Play Chicken went to Doug O’Neill, who trained Square Eddie as well as many of the sire’s other stakes winners for the Reddams. Play Chicken debuted Oct. 17 at Santa Anita at a mile on the turf against Cal-bred and California-sired maidens. Sent away as the third choice and ridden by Mario Gutierrez, Play Chicken raced in second early and won by a half-length. Stepped up to stakes competition in the $151,500 Golden State Juvenile Stakes at seven furlongs on the dirt, Play Chicken broke inwardly, stalked the pace, and fnished ffth. Gutierrez felt going into the King Glorious at a mile on the dirt that if he could keep Play Chicken a little farther of the pace, he might improve. Te tactics worked. Mister Bold set the pace, carving out 40

Te jockey let Play Chicken get a little closer on the second turn, putting him in an excellent striking position through the stretch. Play Chicken got past the leaders, only to have Moving Fast run to his name and close relentlessly. Play Chicken held of Moving Fast by a neck, stopping the timer in 1:38.10. Club Cal fnished third. “Te key was getting him to wait because he wanted to go chase the leader early,” said Gutierrez. “We wanted to wait with him. I tried to save as much as I could with him for the stretch, and he really dug in.” Stephanie Murray, assistant for O’Neill, represented the trainer after the race.

“He showed a lot of heart,” said Murray. “He was very gutsy—couldn’t have asked him to do any more. We just wanted to play the break and see how the race unfolded. It was kind of Mario’s decision from the get go, so I think he gets all the credit.” Te combination of the Reddams, Square Eddie, O’Neill, and Gutierrez had won the King Glorious in 2016 with Ann Arbor Eddie. Tat son of the sire went on to earn $454,811. Ann Arbor Eddie came right back after his King Glorious to win the California Cup Derby at Santa Anita. As for Smoove, she has a 2019 flly by Square Eddie coming. With that sire no longer an option, the Reddams bred the mare back to another of their excellent racehorses, Eclipse Award winner Nyquist.

r. Ed Allred is synonymous with so many facets of the racing industry, most notably as the owner of Los Alamitos Racetrack in Cypress. His exploits and successes in the Quarter Horse industry are legendary, as he is the man behind world champions Charger Bar and Separatist, among others. He was the frst to go over $20 million in Quarter Horse earnings and remains the sport’s all-time leading owner and breeder. But less is known about Allred’s pursuits in the Toroughbred industry. Although he breeds only from four to 10 Toroughbreds a year, Allred has had a steady trickle of stakes winners. Most recently Allred-bred

North County Guy won the $201,500 Unusual Heat Turf Classic Stakes Presented by City National Bank at Santa Anita. Allred was introduced to racing in the 1940s and has since done much to promote the sport and make it cleaner, safer, and better for horses and horsemen alike. While becoming a titan in the Quarter Horse game, Allred was slowly collecting a group of Toroughbred mares as well. One of the frst stakes winners was Maxian, a homebred by Candyman Bee—Maximiss, by Maxistar. he horse’s gastro-intestinal tract is a very complex and amazing organ. It performs many functions, which include processing and absorbing all the fuids and nutrients that feed and sustain the body, as well as playing a huge role in the body’s immune system.

One of the most important functions of the GI tract is to act as a barrier between the external and internal environment—keeping the “good” stuf inside the body and the “bad bugs” out. Even though the feed and water ingested by the horse might contain harmful pathogens, the barrier provided by the GI tract is usually sufcient. Dr. Michael Lindinger, president of the Nutraceutical Alliance and former longtime professor at the University of Guelph, has been involved in animal health research for a long time, looking at problems such as leaky gut syndrome.

LEAKY GUT SYNDROME He is currently working on nutraceutical product development. “Leaky gut is merely a syndrome, which means there can be a lot of diferent causes that can contribute to making the gut leaky,” Lindinger said. “To put this in a human context, when we look at Crohn’s disease or irritable bowel syndrome or even just acute or chronic diarrhea, these are all examples of leaky gut syndrome. Tis just means that the intestinal wall becomes leaky; fuids are not adequately absorbed into the body from the intestine, and fuids from the body can leak into the intestine. Toxins within the intestine can en-

ter the body and cause many problems. “Tose leaks can be ulcers (such as gastric ulcers in the stomach, duodenal ulcers, or colonic ulcers), but often if it’s something like diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome, it’s actually due to a spreading apart of the cells that make up the intestinal walls.” Te intestinal wall is a very thin, single-cell layer that is held together by tight junctions between the cells and other protein elements. Te wall is thin because this makes it easier for the body to absorb fuid and nutrients. Tey only have to pass through that one-cell layer, being transported through and between the cells by very specialized systems. When that thin wall becomes leaky, pathogens can go from the gut into the body, cause local infammation and immune responses, and be picked up by the bloodstream, where they can act on many tissues. “Tis is why we humans feel very sick and experience a very bad immune response when that happens,” said Lindinger. “A horse is eating from the natural environment and always exposed to pathogens. Tese are usually contained within the gut, however, and don’t get into the body. Te healthy gut has mechanisms for detoxifying most of the pathogens. Te stomach, for instance, is very acidic, and this kills many pathogens.” In addition, benefcial microbes that attack and kill many of the pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi that are taken in with the feed exist in the intestine. “A healthy GI tract helps maintain the gut in a non-leaky state and also helps fght of the pathogens that are taken in on a regular basis,” Lindinger said. Pathogenic bacteria and yeast might proliferate within the GI tract under certain conditions, however, and produce toxins that can damage the cells, compromising the tight junctions between those cells. Tese toxins also cause infammation of the intestinal wall and increased permeability, and then they can leak through the wall. “Stress and poor water quality are probably the two biggest factors that can produce ulcers and leaky gut syndrome,” Lindinger said.

Abrupt changes in diet, especially sudden increases in grain or fat, can also negatively disrupt the GI tract microbiome (the normal population of benefcial microbes). Changes in diet should always be gradual over a period of at least a week. THE ROLE OF STRESS

A number of stressors can damage the GI tract barrier. Leaky gut syndrome is often the result of two or more stressors acting together, according to Lindinger. For example, performance horses in training and competing in strenuous athletic careers consume a high-starch diet, which can disrupt the normal digestive process, and also experience stresses of rigorous exercise, training, and handling. Tis, compounded with the stress of stall confnement—a very unnatural environment for horses—can negatively impact the GI tract barrier. Transport is another stress for horses. “Excessive stress, even for short peri-

ods, can result in a loss of homeostasis and subsequent damage to the gut lining,” said Lindinger. “Stress impacts hundreds of diferent signaling molecules and hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline. In turn, these molecules afect numerous tissues and organs, including the GI tract and brain. Some stressors lead to increased stomach acid secretion, which can alter nutrient composition and the intestinal microbiome of benefcial bacteria. Ultimately, stress results in low-grade infammation that is often associated with increased intestinal permeability and leaky gut. “Most competitive horses get minimal turnout time, and that alone is highly stressful. Many trainers also withhold feed before a performance, race, or competition, and some even withhold water. Tis is also very stressful and detrimental to the gut and the horse’s health and behavior.” SIGNS OF LEAKY GUT SYNDROME

Te most common sign of this problem is diarrhea or loose stools.

“If this lasts more than half a day, it should be cause for concern and you should probably call your vet,” said Lindinger. “But you can also start giving the horse some probiotics and prebiotics if you have some on hand.” Sometimes a horse with leaky gut will be constipated rather than have diarrhea, and show signs of impaction colic. “Tis is one of the odd things; leaky gut can cause diarrhea or constipation,” said Lindinger. “Te latter may be even more difcult to notice, especially if the horse is out on pasture.” An owner is more likely to notice these things if the horse is regularly stabled or in a small pen where you can readily see the manure. If there are no bowel movements for half a day, this would be cause for concern. Te horse’s attitude might also change. Anyone who knows the horse can readily tell when that horse is “of.” “Te afected horse may lose appetite and is not interested in food and may become irritable,” said Lindinger. “Other signs may include reduced performance, fatigue, or even laminitis or skin allergies, due to disruption of the immune system.” PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

Te best prevention is simply keeping the horse healthy, providing clean feed and water, avoiding excessive stress, etc. Tings that can be done to reduce stress and promote a healthy gut include keeping the horse in as natural environment as possible and providing good hay and high-quality, clean water. “Te water should be free of chlorine; it shouldn’t be chlorinated tap water,” said Lindinger. “Uncontaminated ground water or something from a running stream is better because chlorine can disrupt the healthy bacteria in the gut.” Changes in feed should always be gradual, and it helps to make these changes in association with dietary sources of butyrate and an efective probiotic. “Many horsemen now are also using probiotics and other products that are helpful in maintaining or restoring intestinal integrity when it has been com50

used, it is important to supplement the diet with butyrate, to maintain barrier function, and with probiotics to replace the loss of benefcial GI tract microbes,” Lindinger said. “Probably the most important probiotics that are known to be safe are the yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae or boulardii); there is a lot of research on these. Tere are many diferent strains, and some are better than others, though all of them seem to be benefcial. “Tere are also a number of benefcial Lactobacillus and Bacillus bacteria for which there is some evidence-based research supporting their efects. Te proven probiotic yeasts (which are fungi) and bacteria have benefcial efects on the horse’s microbiome, which is the entire living community inside the intestinal system. We are trying to maintain a high proportion of benefcial resident microbes compared to the number of pathogenic microbes.” Tere are always some nasty pathogens in the GI tract, and they are necessary— to keep stimulating the body to maintain a highly functioning immune system. But everything needs to be in balance.

thelial cells and acts as a protective shield and bufer against irritants, harmful substances, and pathogens. “Te mucus also possesses bactericides to kill the pathogens, but not the benefcial bacteria,” said Lindinger. “Tus, it provides both a physical and chemical barrier against pathogens, yet allows the difusion of nutrient molecules to get into and go through the epithelial cells.” Anything that disrupts and disturbs

Even gastric ulcers can rapidly come and go as the stomach wall heals itself. “In the intestinal system this healing is even faster, with replacement of damaged cells and repair of leaks within three to six hours, with turnover of cells in a matter of two to three hours,” said Lindinger. “It is a very dynamic system, but energetically expensive to maintain. It is only one cell layer thick, so it is easy to patch and repair as well as damage.”

“Studies on disease-free mice (raised in an environment with no pathogens) show that when animals are completely pathogen-free, they don’t thrive as well as a normal animal that has everything in healthy balance,” Lindinger said. Without some “bad” bacteria to stimulate immune response, the animal has reduced intestinal function and immunity and could become more vulnerable to infection or disease. Providing probiotics is a very natural way to fne-tune and restore the balance between the benefcial and detrimental microbiome throughout the GI tract. “We see the start of a signifcant microbiome in the ilium and defnitely through the cecum and large intestine,” said Lindinger. “All the way through the cecum and large intestine there is a lot of microbial activity.” Tese benefcial “gut bugs” are crucial to digestion of forages as well as to the health of the gut. “In horses and ruminants these microbes break down the otherwise non-digestible starches and fber that come in through the diet. Tese microbes use non-digestible starches as substrate and do the actual digestion, producing a lot of benefcial molecules in that process. “Te benefcial bacteria and yeasts can also provide substrate for other benefcial bacteria (playing a prebiotic role), and some can actually produce butyrate, which is a very important molecule involved in maintaining the tight junctions between each of the intestinal epithelial cells. Studies in many species of animals (but not yet in horses because they are more difcult to study) have shown that when we provide something like butyrate, we see an almost immediate tightening of these junctions and the gut becomes less leaky.” In the hindgut, the “good” bacteria also produce volatile fatty acids that serve as nutrients taken in through the intestinal wall and utilized by all the cells in the body. “Troughout the intestinal system, some bacteria also help the intestine’s epithelial cells produce and maintain a mucous layer, which serves as the frst line of defense inside the intestine itself.” Te mucus lies over the top of the epi-

that mucous layer can put the horse at risk for leaky gut syndrome. “While some pathogens are able to directly disturb the mucous layer, mainly it is mechanical disturbances from ingested foreign materials such as sand, wood fragments or splinters, straw, etc. that erodes the mucous barrier. Abrasive feeds or foreign material in the gut can actually pierce the intestinal wall occasionally, but this wall is capable of very rapid healing and repair. Tere is always an ongoing cycle of breaking down and repairing.”

Use of non-steroidal anti-infammatory medications should be minimized. “All of the NSAIDs are known to have detrimental efects on horses, causing pockets or areas of insufcient blood fow within the GI tract, creating dead zones,” said Lindinger. “Ten we get an area of infammation and leaky gut, colic, and possibly ulcers. Tere is a very strong association between use of NSAIDs (when used for longer than three days) and the incidence of colonic ulcers.”
