CALIFORNIA-BRED OPPORTUNITIES BEGET STRONG SALE PRICES
T
he current demand for quality California-bred yearlings was extremely strong at the commercial sales, as evidenced by the higher averages and median prices at the recent Fasig-Tipton September sale and the August NorCal sale. As depicted in the chart below, numerous Cal-breds are yielding prices of $100,000 or more. In fact, 17 yearlings were listed as sold for $100,000 or more at the Fasig-Tipton sale, with fve Cal-breds bringing $200,000 or more. Breeders/consignors are seeing the rewards for investments made with upgrading their stock. Calbreds sired by top national and regional sires are leading the way. Te lucrative restricted racing and in-
centives continue triggering this increased marketability for well-bred and well-conformed Cal-breds. Te in-state opportunities and potential fnancial purse and incentive awards for Cal-breds give a signifcant advantage to owners. If you are racing in California, you should defnitely have some Cal-breds in your barn, both for the restricted purse benefts as well as for the multiple racing opportunities. In Southern California, a Cal-bred can earn well over six fgures just going through its frst conditions (Cal-bred maiden allowance, Cal-bred frst-condition allowance, open frst-condition allowance), in addition to the maiden bonus and owner awards in open company. And then there is the $4.5 million
Golden State Series with restricted stakes purses ranging from $100,000-$200,000 throughout the state. Also, in Northern California, there has been a major focus on expanding the restricted overnight stakes opportunities, as we are expecting to ofer a record number of Cal-bred maiden special weight races among Golden Gate Fields and the Fairs this year. With such a high dependence on horses bred locally to provide the needed feld sizes, this program and these opportunities not only need to remain in place but to continue to grow. We are now experiencing the positive results with a strong commercial and private sales market. As breeders continue to focus on quality, we should be able to build on these results.

Fashionably Fast, the co-champion California-bred sprinter of 2020, added a second victory in the $75,000 Harris Farms Stakes at the Big Fresno Fair Oct. 9. He frst captured the race in 2019. Sent away as the 2-5 favorite in the six-furlong Harris, Fashionably Fast prompted the pace of Hit the Seam, who completed the frst quarter-mile in :23.76 and a half-mile in :46.41. With Tiago Pereira aboard for trainer Dean Pederson, Fashionably Fast dug in during the stretch run to take command and score by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:09.90. Top Harbor fnished second, with Jamming Eddy third in the fve-horse feld. Fashionably Fast Te race is named for John Harris’ Harris Farms, the longtime top breeding facility in Coalinga, about 60 miles southwest of Fresno. Harris Farms bred Fashionably Fast, a 6-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit—Fall Fashion, by Forestry, and owns the gelding with Per Antonsen and John Nicoletti. In addition to his two victories in the Harris, Fashionably Fast fnished second in the 2018 edition of the race. Following his 2019 Harris win, he added the Cary Grant Stakes, California Cup Sprint Stakes, and Tiznow Stakes for six wins in a row, a streak that began with two allowance races. He repeated in the Tiznow this year, and his stakes-placings include a second in the 2020 Triple Bend Stakes (G2). Fashionably Fast has earned a total of $683,891.

He earned $549,901 for the partnership, and in total he won nine of 46 starts, with seven seconds and 15 thirds. Not included in that is a 1,000-yard race for Toroughbreds and Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos Dec. 19, 2020. Brandothebartender won that as well, adding another $9,600 to his $772,864 total. Brandothebartender, the 8-year-old California-bred gem of consistency, has been retired to Old Friends in Kentucky. A bargain $40,000 claim who has won four stakes and earned $772,864, Brandothebartender sustained an injury in a workout at Santa Anita, prompting his retirement. “We decided to retire him,” said Jerry Weseloh of Flawless Racing. “All he needed was rest, but heading to a ninth year seemed ambitious.” Craig Dollase trained Brandothebartender Brandothebartender after the claim for Flawless, Brian Flanagan, and Michael Jarvis. Tey won a six-way shake for the gelding at Del Mar, and three starts later he captured the California Flag Handicap, earning them $60,000. HISTORY
Amazombie
ANNE M. EBERHARDT
California Angel, winner of the Oct. 13 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland, might be a Kentucky-bred, but her pedigree is full of California history. Te Irish National Stud bred the 2-year-old daughter of California Chrome, and Chris Walsh owns her. Rafael Bejarano rode California Angel in the Jessamine for trainer George Leonard III. She took the 11⁄16-mile event by a head and paid $37.60 to win. Te California parts of the flly’s pedigree go back several generations. She is inbred 4 x 5 to Lucky Spell, a daughter of multiple stakes winner Lucky Mel out of Incantation. Lucky Spell, a foal of 1971, earned $253,655 in fve seasons of racing. At 3 she won the Las Palmas Handicap (G3), Linita Stakes, Princess Stakes, and California Angel Time to Leave Stakes, and at 4 she added the Las Flores Handicap. Lucky Spell is California Angel’s ffth dam. She also appears in California Chrome’s pedigree as the second dam of his sire, Lucky Pulpit. When bred to Caro, Lucky Spell produced Goldspell, who won the 1985 Torrey Pines Stakes and ran third in that year’s Linda Vista Handicap (G3). When bred to Caro’s son Cozzene, Lucky Spell produced Lucky Soph, who won once in six starts. Goldspell is California Angel’s fourth dam while Lucky Soph produced Lucky Pulpit, who became a major California sire. California Angel’s fourth generation brings in another California bloodline, with Cees Tizzy and Cee’s Song appearing there as the sire and dam of champion Calbred Tiznow, who in turn sired Tiz Wonderful. Goldspell produced Lovethespell, the dam of Justaspell. When Justaspell was bred to Tiz Wonderful, they produced stakes-placed Sea Mona, the dam of California Angel. Tough California Angel has these California roots, she has spent her time in other parts of the country. She sold for $5,000 as a weanling at the 2019 Keeneland November sale and for $5,500 in Florida at the 2021 Ocala Breeders’ Sales’ June 2-year-old auction. California Angel has made all three of her starts, with two wins and a third, in Kentucky.

AMAZOMBIE did his native California proud by capturing the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) Nov. 5, 2011, at Churchill Downs. Following his score in the Oct. 8 Ancient Title Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita, the 5-year-old gelding went off as the 7-1 sixth choice in the feld of nine under jockey Mike Smith. Racing four wide, Amazombie came rushing late to grab a neck victory over Force Freeze, completing six furlongs in 1:09.17. Favored Jackson Bend fnished third. Bill Spawr trained Amazombie for himself and Thomas Sanford. Gregg Anderson bred the son of Northern Afeet—Wilshe Amaze, by In Excess. Amazombie raced another year, earning a total of $1,920,378, and today he enjoys retirement at Old Friends in Kentucky.
25 YEARS AGO IN EXCESSIVE BULL, a California-bred 2-year-old son of In Excess—She Aint No Bull, by Top Command, became a stakes winner in just his third start in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (G3) at Hollywood Park
Nov. 10, 1996. The colt had broken his maiden in his frst start, at Santa Anita, and fnished second there to Thisnearlywasmine in the Sunny Slope Stakes. The 7-10 Prevue favorite under jockey Corey Nakatani, In Excessive Bull raced in second early in the seven furlongs, took command, and drew off to defeat early pacesetter Thisnearlywasmine by 31⁄2 lengths in 1:21.54. Bob Baffert trained In Excessive Bull for owner/breeder Hal J. Earnhardt III. In Excessive Bull also added the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes.
50 YEARS AGO Mrs. J.W. Story, a retired college professor, always wanted to breed a racehorse, so she borrowed the Indian Lover mare Silver Indian and bred her to the stallion Double Lea. The result was California-bred SILVER DOUBLE, who became a multiple stakes winner in British Columbia and Washington. He also won the Bay Meadows Handicap Nov. 27, 1971 by a neck. The 5-year-old gelding completed 11⁄8 miles in 1:492⁄5 for owner G & R Stables, trainer T. Witts, and jockey L. Wall. Story raised Silver Double at her 21⁄2acre Chico Ranch and sold him for $800 at the 1967 California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Pomona fall mixed sale. She earned a breeders’ award of $1,900, more than double that purchase price, in the Bay Meadows Handicap.

Memoriam Sam Spear
SEAN VASSAR
Peter Tunney, who died Sept. 22 at age 83 after a lengthy illness, worked in Golden Gate Fields management from 1980-2017, but his long career took him throughout California. He worked as a racing offcial at Southern California tracks, including serving as Del Mar’s racing secretary from 1972-74 Sports were always destined to be part of Tunney’s life. His father, Jim Tunney Sr., was a Southern California racing offcial, and Peter worked as a parking attendant at Hollywood Park while attending Occidental College after graduating from Alhambra High School. He competed at track and played halfback at Occidental, and he was part of a 1959 relay team that set a school record that still stands. The Detroit Lions drafted him in 1960. Tunney’s brother Jim was an NFL referee from 1967-90, but an injury kept Peter from ever playing professional football. Football’s loss was racing’s gain. After teaching and coaching at several Los Angeles-area high schools, Peter began working full-time in the racing industry, initially as a racing offcial and later in the racing offce. Peter worked the entire Southern California circuit of Santa Anita, Hollywood, and Del Mar before joining the Golden Gate team as general manager in 1980. He later became an executive vice president before retiring in 2017. He also served as a trustee of the California Thoroughbred Foundation. Tunney is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Anian; daughters Courtney Hotchkis, Shannon McDonald, Adrienne Krumins, and Catherine McDowell; siblings Jim Tunney, Joanne Hawkins, and Loretta Holstein; and eight grandchildren.
Golden Gate Fields suffered a second major loss in a month when Sam Spear died Oct. 23 at age 72. Like Peter Tunney before him, Spear was associated with Golden Gate Fields and Northern California racing for decades. Spear was retired from director of media relations at Golden Gate and had also previously served as media relations director at Bay Meadows. For decades he promoted Bay Area racing through a variety of outlets. He was well-known for his radio and television shows, and he likely interviewed every major owner, trainer, and jockey to race at Golden Gate or Bay Meadows. Growing up in Alameda, Spear was interested in all sports from a young age. In the mid-1970s he worked in publicity for the San Francisco Giants, and during that time he started his own sports program at a San Jose radio station. His inclusion of racing news impressed Ron Supinski, then Golden Gate’s publicity director, who asked Spear to work for him in early 1977 promoting racing on radio and TV. Spear built that into a race replay TV show that ran from 1978-2017, buying time on his own. He produced the program, created the advertising, and made sure the race replays got to the station in time to air them, even driving them from the track himself. He also hosted the weekly radio program “At the Track with Sam Spear” on Sunday mornings. He traveled to races around the world, coordinating trips for viewers to major racetracks. He often took trips to the Breeders’ Cup, no matter where in the country the series was held. “Nobody has done more to promote horse racing in Northern California over the years than Sam,” Tom Ferrell told this magazine in 2016. Ferrell worked with Spear for more than 25 years at Golden Gate. VASSAR PHOTOGRAPHY

Remembering Peter Tunney Peter Tunney, who served the racing industry both as an executive at California tracks and as a trustee of the California Toroughbred Foundation, died Sept. 22 at age 83 at his home in Piedmont after a lengthy illness. Associated primarily with Golden Gate Fields, where he had worked for decades, Tunney also had been a racing ofcial at Southern California tracks, including as Del Mar’s racing secretary from 1972-74. He joined the Golden Gate team as general manager in 1980 and later served as an executive vice president before retiring in 2017. Tunney helped represent the Foundation in Northern California and was an active participant at board meetings. His daughter, Courtney Tunney Hotchkis, became a Foundation trustee late last year. Several people who served with Tunney on the Foundation board shared their remembrances of him. “Peter was one of a kind—he had a keen sense of humor and was a practical joker who constantly put you on your toes,” said current trustee and Del Mar executive Tom Robbins. “He was my frst boss ever at Del Mar in 1968, and I learned so much from observing the way he interacted with the vast variety of people we deal with in Toroughbred horse racing. Peter’s ability to treat people with kindness and respect spoke volumes of his character.” Former trustee Dr. Greg Ferraro, currently chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, said, “Peter Tunney was widely known for an old-world charm and sophistication that brought memories of the former glory days of horse racing. His wry smile and sharp wit made him popular in any social setting. He was a man of the world whose knowledge and experience made him a valuable racing executive. Tose who knew him will surely miss him, and those who never met him have missed a one-of-a-kind gentleman.” Former trustee Alan Balch, executive director of California Toroughbred Trainers, had worked with Tunney at several California tracks and said, “One of racing’s good guys, Peter Tunney was at home anywhere on the track—whether in the garage at Hollywood Park, to the overfow parking lot at Santa Anita, to a Paris restaurant during Arc week, any stewards’ stand, racing ofce, or the executive suite at Golden Gate Fields. He was a gifted raconteur and bon vivant whose droll sense of humor is unforgettable and was a big part of his success as a management leader.”

rickyard Ride needed a break. After the 4-year-old colt won three stakes earlier this year, including the $202,000 San Carlos Stakes (G2) by four lengths, owner Alfred Pais decided that his brilliant California-bred sprinter could use a vacation. the Pat O’Brien Stakes (G2) after breaking through the gate before the start. But where to send him? Pais chose Kingfsher Farms. First established in 2017 at a Santa Ynez location, Katie Fisher’s rehabilitation and layup facility moved in December 2020. Te tranquil farm is now situated just of Highway 101 and before the popular tourist town of Solvang. It has quickly become a top choice
a day, as opposed to once,” Fisher said. “You want to get infammation and heat out of the tendon frst and foremost. It’s angry while it’s hot, but if you can get it cooled, then it starts to heal.” Tendons get rescanned between 60 and 90 days. Depending on the scan, the horses might get another 45 to 60 days of hand-walking before they are turned out. Once the horse is ready to go back to work, the trainer gets input on the rehabilitation process.
dance when Pete called me and said he was sending up Storm the Court,” Fisher said. “I said, ‘Wait, you’re sending me the big guy!?’ I hung up and did a dance.” Storm the Court has earned $1,369,951, with two wins in 14 starts, one of those being the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at 451. He fnished sixth in the 2020 Kentucky Derby (G1), but hasn’t won in two years. Hence the vacation. “I love getting to watch the horses get better and then go on,” Fisher said.

for many trainers to send their horses for mental reprieves or to recover from injuries before returning to the races. “Tey ran through him with a fne-tooth comb,” Fisher said of $470,977-earner Brickyard Ride. “Tey wanted to give him time after he broke through the gate. Te owner had toured my farm and referred others to me. When Brickyard Ride got here, he said, ‘Anything you can think of that might beneft him? Just throw it right at him.’ ” Tis means diferent options for different horses. “I knew it would be a short break,” Fisher said, “so I hand-walked him and grazed him so that he could get the beneft of the grass and the sun on his back without being turned loose to his own devices.” Te farm has myriad equipment, including a full-sized vibration plate, to help horses relax and recover,. “All my horses go on the vibe plate every day; every single one,” Fisher said. Tere is also an AquaTred underwater treadmill and an arena for horses to be worked by the farm’s resident international riders. Fisher has developed her own “starting protocols” for each type of injury or rehabilitation project. “By the time they arrive, I’ve generally talked to the trainer and, in most cases, also the owner,” she said. “I already know what is wrong with the horse and also what the goal is. Do they just want 30 days of with time on the grass? Our refreshers always include grass time because how else do you let a horse be a horse?” Post-surgical rehabs are even more detailed. “I speak to the veterinarian involved so that I get a surgery report, X-rays, and/ or ultrasounds,” Fisher said. “I get copies of the scans, including MRI and PET scans, so that we have a point of reference for where we are starting and where we will be going. I like to map out their time here.” Horses with tendon issues get handwalked twice daily, starting around 10 minutes each time. Ten they stand on the vibration plate and stand in ice. “It’s good for their minds to go twice
Alfred Pais’ homebred graded stakes winner Brickyard Ride, shown spending some quality time refreshening at Kingfsher Farms before a return to the races
“Some trainers don’t want us to sit on the horse,” she said. “Others think it’s great if we can leg the horse up. Two weeks on the AquaTred keeps them moving and working, keeps those muscles going. Tey don’t lose a lot of muscle between 30 and 45 days because they are incredible athletes. But after 60 or 75 days, you see them going a little soft.” Fisher’s success has been noticed by trainers such as Mike Puype, who sent grade 2-placed Cal-bred Tigre Di Slugo to the farm this year, and Richard Baltas. One of her biggest clients is Peter Eurton, who has sent horses such as grade 1-placed Dream Shake and 2019 TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) shocker Storm the Court. “Don’t think I didn’t do a little happy
“Whether it’s a broodmare or a stallion or a racehorse going back to the track or on to their second career, I get to watch that progression.” Speaking of broodmares, Fisher’s farm is home to a handful, including pensioned Ashley’s Folly, who was twice the California Broodmare of the Year. Te daughter of Urgent Request—Cozzene’s Kiss, by Cozzene, has produced seven winners from eight starters. Among those are Cal-bred millionaire Ashleyluvssugar, who won fve graded stakes races, and three-time stakes placed Ashley’s Sassy. Te grand gray mare loves to play in her water trough, getting her nearly white coat endlessly dirty. “She wants a pool to play in,” Fisher noted dryly.

Individual attention is a big part of the success in getting horses back to the track and to the sales ring. Te second-highest-priced colt of the Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale, a $260,000 son of City of Light, was prepped at Kingfsher Farms. Te property used to be what Pam and Martin Wygod used for their yearlings before selling it to Fisher. “I attract a diferent clientele because primarily what I do is
layups,” Fisher said. “I’m not a breeding farm that also takes layups. I’ve heard people say they can send the horse to a cheaper farm, and they could. But I think you get what you pay for. For instance, putting the horses on the vibe plate is not a big stretch for me to do every day, so it’s included in my rate. At a lot of places, that’s an extra charge.” Fisher, a single mom of young twins, would not be able to handle everything alone and credits her team of employees for the young farm’s success. “It takes a village,” she said. “I am just one piece of the puzzle. It takes the referring vets, my vets here, the farm (staf), trainer, and owners. All work together for the beneft of these athletes.”

Golden State Series—California Flag Handicap
Gary Barber and Wachtel Stable’s Indian Peak reaches new heights in the California Flag Handicap at Santa Anita
FAMILY CONNECTIONS CALIFORNIA FLAG ALL DOWNHILL FOR INDIAN PEAK
BY EMILY SHIELDS
O
ne of the most beloved California-breds of the last 20 years was California Flag, a millionaire who won the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint back before it was ever graded. A former king of the Santa Anita Park turf course, California Flag now has his own stakes race named in his honor, and that event was held Oct. 17 down the same hill where he once reigned.
Longshot Indian Peak prevailed in the $102,000 California Flag Handicap, outgaming favored North County Guy by a head at the wire over the distance of about 6 1⁄2 furlongs. Under jockey Juan Hernandez, the son of Comic Strip—Ms. Booty, by Roar, sat back second last in the nine28
horse feld and rallied widely around his rivals into the lane. He swallowed up the leaders in the last eighth, dueling with North County Guy to the wire. Te 16-1 odds confused Adam Wachtel, who owns Indian Peak in partnership with Gary Barber. “If you were watching the race live,” said Wachtel, “the TVG guys were saying, ‘How can he be that price?’ He had

a legit excuse when he ran last as the favorite at Del Mar, and before that he just missed in a stakes race. Tis is a seriously talented horse; in hindsight, the odds seem ridiculous.” Wachtel and Barber acquired Indian Peak over the summer and have had him for just three starts. Te 4-year-old gelding, who was bred by Dr. and Mrs. William T. Gray, came with a classy background, as he won the $151,000 Snow Chief Stakes in 2020. He was an attractive prospect for more than his record, however: Te owners already had his sister. “We have his full sister Kukaluka,” Wachtel explained. Her Boisterous daughter California Kook is grade 1-placed, and another daughter, Kookie Gal, won the 2018 Soviet Problem Stakes at Los Alamitos. “Indian Peak actually beat California Kook before,” Wachtel said, recalling the Snow Chief Stakes where Indian Peak outran his flly by a half-length. “He had been a little of form recently but was running in tough races. We were glad to be able to buy him.” Broodmare Ms. Booty, who is responsible for the whole line, has a 100% strike rate from seven starters. Her daughter La Fiera, who was born fve years before Indian Peak, won the $100,000 Campanile Stakes at Golden Gate Fields in 2015. Her daughters have taken after her; Kukaluka’s two foals to race are both winners, and La Fiera’s only foal to race is a winner. In three seasons of racing, Indian Peak has amassed six wins, three seconds, and a third in 20 starts for earnings of $333,532. With his career still going strong, he has options sprinting or going two turns and has already won on both turf and synthetic. “He’s had a very consistent career,” Wachtel said. “I think you fnd that a lot of horses do well cutting back and coming of the pace down the hill. I really like him.” Jehobany Alvarez, assistant to winning trainer Peter Miller, said after the victory, “We are really, really happy. We knew we had a lot of horse coming into this race, but it was a tough race. We got the right trip and it’s nice to win.”

Showtime has been writing her own legacy since her 2019 debut. Te Benjamin and Sally Warren homebred, who is trained by Craig Lewis, won the $100,351 Surfer Girl Stakes against open company as a juvenile, then added the $202,000 California Cup Oaks and the $106,000 China Doll Stakes early in her sophomore season. A win in the $150,500 Melair Stakes on the main track sent Warren’s Showtime into graded company; she fnished third in both the San Clemente Stakes (G2T) and the Del Mar Oaks (G1T) before winning her frst graded event, the $101,000 Autumn Miss Stakes (G3T). Warren’s Showtime was slow to fnd the winner’s circle in 2021, running second or third in four straight races before taking the $101,500 Wilshire Stakes (G3T) in June. She fnished third in the Solana Beach Stakes at Del Mar despite being favored but rebounded efortlessly Ben and Sally Warren’s Warren’s Showtime stars in the California Distaff Stakes at Santa Anita in the California Distaf. Te Warrens traveled from Las Vegas to Santa Anita for the race. Te win was so thrilling Sally Warren compared the mare’s consistency to that of the great Zenyatta. “(Ben) has had so many horses, but not one that has been so consistent as ShowDistaf, Warren’s Showtime and jockey time,” Sally said. “We were just saying, THE ‘SHOW’ GOES Juan Hernandez dropped back to last in 19 out of 21 starts she’s hit the board and ON IN CALIFORNIA the six-horse feld. Tey tracked the other that’s unbelievable. It makes me think of runners down Santa Anita Park’s hillside Zenyatta, only in a diferent way—we hit DISTAFF STAKES turf course, with Anna Fantastic setting the board, she won. But we are so happy.” BY EMILY SHIELDS the pace and Sedamar chasing. Sweeping Trainer Lewis agreed about the flly’s down the lane, Warren’s Showtime split reliability, saying, “Te number one ooking for a model of consisten- rivals and rallied, getting up on the line trait she has that separates her from cy? Look no further than War- by three-quarters of a length. Sedamar most horses is her consistency. She’s a ren’s Showtime, who added the fnished second, Anna Fantastic third, big, beautiful flly. orses get hoof cracks from several causes. Some are more serious than others and might take more effort to resolve. Tommy Boudreau, a certifed farrier in Mineral Wells, Texas, says hoof cracks can be due to dry feet, a foot’s being out of balance, or a blow to the coronary band.
“If there is enough damage to compromise horn-growing cells at the coronary band, there may be weaker horn at that area, which can crack,” he said. “If there’s not enough blood supply in the damaged area that took the blow, this can cause a crack. If a horse overreaches and hits the coronary band, it’s usually somewhere in the area between the region of the heel nail and the buttress—the back part of the foot.” Quarter cracks occur in the rear third of the hoof and can be either proximal (along the side) or distal (more toward the rear). Many quarter cracks originate at the ground surface on the side of the hoof, usually about the middle of the quarter. Others begin at the coronary band at the top of the hoof wall. Tey often cause lameness and can be challenging to fx. Jeremiah Sprague, a farrier in Indiana, says the ones that start in the coronary band, traveling down the hoof wall, are common and usually the most serious because they extend deep into the hoof, leading to instability, infammation, and sometimes infection.
Te vertical movement of the heel bulb complicates the instability. If the horse has a short shoe that doesn’t give much support to the heel, or long toes and a low heel, this puts even more pressure on the heel and the hoof wall becomes thinner at the heels. “When the horse puts all that pressure on the heel, it will crack,” Sprague said. “A longer shoe, supporting more of the heel area, will help that problem.” Sometimes imbalance of the hoof or poor conformation that creates an abnormal landing pattern, with the horse landing harder on one side of the foot than the other, can lead to a quarter crack. Tis might be due to the horse’s toeing in or toeing out, or having the foot too long, creating an imbalanced hoof. Te hoof needs to be properly balanced when trimmed, with adequate support at the rear of the foot when shod. “Often this will fx it, putting more support on the frog—perhaps packing it with something and using a pad, to put the weight on the frog instead of on the hoof wall that’s cracked,” said Sprague.

the weight that would normally be on the heels. Before I tack on the shoe, I make a notch or trim of a little of the hoof wall in that area, so it doesn’t touch the shoe— leaving a tiny space between shoe and hoof—from the quarter crack back to the heel of the shoe. I don’t want the hoof wall in that area to take any weight, so there won’t be any pressure at all on that part of the wall. “Tat will give the quarter crack a better chance to grow out and heal because you are taking away all the pressure that might otherwise keep spreading it. Tis has proved to be a good treatment for quarter cracks. “You can take that a step further with extra support for the wall. Once you apply the heart bar shoe and have trimmed/notched out the heel so there’s no pressure, you can also consider (in severe cases) putting a patch on the wall, lacing the quarter crack together with a small stainless steel wire. You can then put acrylic over the top of that to stabilize the crack. Ten there will be no movement, and it won’t get worse and can grow out. “When I apply a patch like that, I run it up within a half-inch of the coronary band, supporting as much of the foot as possible. If you apply the patch properly, as the foot grows down you can just keep trimming the patch, just like the hoof wall. If everything works the way it’s supposed to, it will grow of and then you’ll have a strong, healthy foot again.” Most farriers also try to support the hoof wall with a clip or a patch of some kind, to help hold the crack together so it can’t spread anymore. Anything that’s simple, strong, and durable will work, applied to the outside, covering as much of the wall as possible at the quarter. “Acrylic (a strong plastic that can bond to the hoof) is sometimes used, but a person must be careful not to lock any bacteria inside the crack,” Sprague said. Cleaning it out thoroughly and applying medication into it frst can help prevent infection. STEVE NORMAN
Some horses are born with or develop an imbalance where one heel bulb is a little higher than the other, which can lead to sheared heels and quarter cracks. “One way to help correct the problem is that when I’m shoeing the horse, I take that shoe of frst, trimming that cracked side, notching it out so the hoof wall is shorter—from the heel and past the quarter crack,” said Sprague. “Ten I let the horse stand on that foot while I do the other three feet. Tis puts more weight on that foot, which will drop the heel bulb down, on that high side—and it drops fast. It’s amazing how much it can drop just in the time it takes to shoe the other three feet.” Tere is nothing there to hold that side of the wall up, with it trimmed away, and the weight of A laced-together hoof crack will help support the hoof wall by not allowing the crack to spread any farther the horse pushes it down where it should be. Ten when that foot is shod, with support for the frog and less healthy foot in that area. Treatment a space left under the cracked area, the for these problems includes making weight of the horse continues to help sure the foot is in balance and keeping keep that heel bulb pressed down. the coronary band supple. Very few horses are blessed with per“On many of these problems, I use a fect foot conformation. Many toe in heart bar shoe with a tongue that rests or out and develop a fare and thinner, against the frog, to help take more of weaker hoof wall on one side. Tus, it’s the pressure and weight,” said Bounot as easy to prevent a quarter crack dreau. “Tis supports a good portion of unless the hoof is perfectly balanced each time it is trimmed and shod. If the coronary band is compromised, Boudreau suggests applying a good hoof dressing to keep the coronary band as supple as you can. “Ten, hopefully, the crack won’t get too bad,” he said. “You also want to make sure the feet are in balance, landing level. You don’t want any extra pressure on any one part of the hoof wall. “When the hoof is out of balance, it creates too much pressure on one side of the hoof capsule. Tis will push into the coronary band and cause it to jam up. With all the extra pressure in one spot on that side of the foot, it can make it break out and crack.” “Too much pressure on one part of Hoof cracks can be caused by dry feet, a the coronary band can also lead to a foot’s being out of balance, or a blow to the lack of blood supply in that spot, and a coronary band
still be a little crack in the dorsal wall. Often Boudreau uses an electric dremel tool to clean that all out. “Sometimes I use nippers, turn them sideways, and just make a little V right there on the ground surface of the toe at that spot,” he said, “and then use a hoof knife to get all the black debris out
You also want to make sure the feet are in balance landing level. You don’t want any extra pressure on any one part of the hoof wall.” — Tommy Boudreau
of there. If you clean it out really well, before it gets into sensitive tissue, and apply a shoe with side clips, this will usually hold it together. Sometimes, since it hasn’t gotten into sensitive tissue yet, I put a little acrylic in there. Ten it won’t collect dirt and cosmetically looks nicer.
“Often we can get these to grow out. But some horses that have that little dimple in the white line will always have a problem with a toe crack at that spot. It’s a common thing that many people don’t notice—just a little dimple at the white line at the toe. It never becomes a problem for most horses; they generally don’t get a toe crack or need side clips. But occasionally it can become an issue. “If it’s a horse that’s always worn shoes and the owner decides to pull the shoes and let the horse go barefoot (such as a broodmare at pasture) and I know there’s a little dimple in the toe, I make a mental note. When I trim it the next time, I can make sure there is no crack starting there—since there won’t be a shoe protecting that area.” Te important thing is to keep feet in balance and the coronary band as supple as possible. “Good hoof maintenance at appropriate intervals when feet need to be trimmed or reshod is important so feet don’t get too long,” said Boudreau. “We also try to keep feet out of fences because that’s another cause of trauma that might injure the coronary band and create a quarter crack.”
STEVE NORMAN
It’s crucial to provide stability for the heel because you want the foot to land fatter and not have so much movement at the heel. “Tis may mean taking of a little more toe and having a shorter foot, or shoeing that horse more often so the toes don’t get so long. Tis is usually necessary to get rid of a quarter crack.” When the hoof starts to get a little too long, especially at the toe, there is always more pressure on the heels. “You may have to shoe that horse every four weeks a few times until you get the problem cleared up, and then you just have to keep on top of it,” Sprague said. Boudreau uses pour-in pad material on some of these feet. “I use the kind that has copper sulfate in it, and it ends up a turquoise color when you put it in the foot,” he said. “A horse with a quarter crack can be shod with a heart bar shoe, and then I use duct tape to block of the area where I’ve trimmed out the hoof wall so the pour-in material can’t get in there under the shoe (between the shoe and the wall). Ten I fll the sole up with the pour-in pad material, and it gives the foot and sole more support and stability so there’s no pressure on the quarter crack and it can grow on out.” Another type of crack that is fairly common is called a sand crack. Tese are generally any part of the toe area, between 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock on the front part of the wall. “Some of these can be serious,” said Boudreau. “If you trim the foot and look at the white line, at the site of the crack there will be a little dimple in the white line. What causes this is a dimple in the cofn bone underneath. “Tis creates a weak spot in the white line, where the inner structures are bonded to the hoof capsule. If a little bit of dirt gets pushed up in that crack, or even one little grain of sand works its way into that crack, it can move up into the sensitive tissue and cause an abscess. “If that creates an opening into sensitive tissue and the horse is walking in mud, there is contamination and an abscess. On a crack like that, you are taking a chance for an abscess if you don’t address it.” After trimming the foot, there will
Hoof cracks can be treated by using a heart bar or any other kind of shoe to support the rest of the foot and by trimming off part of the hoof wall in that area, leaving a gap so that part of the hoof bears no weight until the crack has grown out

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through October 24, 2021.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
