During its fall meeting Golden Gate Fields showcased California-breds as the frst four stakes all went to horses bred in the Golden State. Camino Del Paraiso continued his amazing comeback from a serious eye injury when he captured his second consecutive Joseph T. Grace Stakes Nov. 6. Tat gave the 8-year-old gelding back-toback scores in two Golden Gate fxtures: the 2020 and 2021 Rolling Green Stakes and the 2020 and 2021 Grace. In the $64,250 Grace at 11⁄16 miles, Camino Del Paraiso came from sixth early to defeat Big Fish by 13⁄4 lengths in 1:43.49. Catalino Martinez rode favored Camino Del Paraiso for trainer O. J. Jauregui and owner Herb Moniz’ Paradise Road Ranch. Camino Del Paraiso wins the Joseph T. Grace Red Baron’s Barn bred the son of Suances—Loni’s Appeal, by Successful Appeal. Camino Del Paraiso raised his total earnings to $559,392. A week later, Nov. 13, Dr Pescado captured the $63,450 Golden Nugget Stakes for 2-year-olds. He prompted Stanford Bay’s pace early in the six furlongs and beat that rival, also a Cal-bred, by a halflength in 1:11.51. Pedro Terrero rode Dr Pescado for trainer Felix Rondan, who owns the colt with Ruben Arechiga. Juan Heredia bred the son of Fullbridled—Sweetly Peppered, by Peppered Cat. On consecutive days, Oct. 30-31, Vaping Angel and Top Harbor collected respective stakes trophies, in the $75,450 Pike Place Dancer Stakes and the $75,000 El Dorado Shooter Stakes. With Terrero in the irons, Vaping Angel raced next-to-last early in the Pike Place Dancer, for 2-year-old fllies at a mile on the turf. She moved up midway on the second turn to win by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:40.90. Cal-breds Jessebear and Code Ribbon fnished second and third to make it a Cal-bred trifecta. Rondan also trains Vaping Angel, bred and owned by Jill and Dr. William Gray. Vaping Angel, who paid $52.80 as the longest price in the six-horse feld, is a daughter of Southern Image—Nada Joke, by Comic Strip. Te El Dorado Shooter was for California-bred and California-sired 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs. Favored War Games led early while Top Harbor sat in fourth, coming on late to nose out In Our A for the win. Top Harbor stopped the timer in 1:09.46. War Games fnished third. Frank Alvarado rode Top Harbor for trainer Tim McCanna. Eric Schweiger, Gordon Jarnig, and Kenny Marshall bred and own the 3-year-old son of Harbor the Gold—Reba Is Tops, by He’s Tops.

THE CHOSEN VRON AT TURF PARADISE California-bred The Chosen Vron added another stakes victory to his resume in the $60,000 Hank Mills Sr. Stakes at Turf Paradise Nov. 5. Ridden by Harry Hernandez, The Chosen Vron tracked the pace early in the 61⁄2-furlong race and won by a half-length in 1:14.74. Eric Kruljac trains The Chosen Vron and owns him with Robert Fetkin, John Sondereker, and RichThe Chosen Vron ard Thornburgh. The group bred the 3-year-old gelded son of Vronsky—Tiz Molly, by Tiz Wonderful, in the name of Tiz Molly Partners. The Mills was The Chosen Vron’s frst start since he fnished second in the July 30 Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar. Before that, he won three stakes in a row—the Echo Eddie Stakes, Lazaro Barrera Stakes (G3), and Affrmed Stakes (G3). The Chosen Vron has earned $340,678.

California-based 3-year-old graded stakes winner Hot Rod Charlie, trained by Doug O’Neill, played a signifcant role in Boat Racing’s being named the 2021 New Owner of the Year, sponsored by 1/ST Racing. Te award will be presented at the 2021 Toroughbred Owner Conference Dec. 7. College friends from Brown University—Eric Armagost, Daniel Giovacchini, Reiley Higgins, Patrick O’Neill, and Alex Quoyeser—make up Boat Racing. O’Neill is Doug O’Neill’s nephew. Boat Racing owns other horses through yearling and 2-year-old sales and pinhooking. Te partners, in addition to being enthusiastic racing participants, are also active in philanthropic causes. The Boat Racing crew Tey contribute a portion of all of their horses’ earnings toward the Melanoma Research Alliance, Jake Panus Scholarship Fund, and Jake Panus Walk-on Football Endowed Scholarship. Boat Racing owns Hot Rod Charlie with William Strauss, Gainesway Stable, and Roadrunner Racing. Te 3-year-old son of Oxbow won this year’s Pennsylvania Derby (G1) and TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2). In addition, Hot Rod Charlie ran second in the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) and third in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1). He most recently fnished fourth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

Two California-bred mares and a Cal-bred weanling sold for six fgures each at the Keeneland November sale. Been Studying Her and Stealthediamonds, both bred by Kevin and Kim Nish’s KMN Racing, sold for $330,000 and $260,000 Nov. 12. A weanling son of Omaha Beach, bred by Tom Bachman’s Fairview, sold for $200,000 the day before. The Nishes raced Been Studying Her, who earned $305,602 and won the 2019 Generous Portion Stakes and Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes. Gainesway as agent consigned the 4-year-old daughter of Fast Anna—Maddie’s Odyssey, by Kitten’s Joy. Natalma bought Been Studying Her, a half sister to graded winners Sneaking Out and Grecian Fire, in foal to Improbable. Gainesway also consigned Stealthediamonds, who sold as a broodmare prospect to Astute Bloodstock. A 5-year-old daughter of Unusual Heat—No Better Terms, by Pure Prize, Stealthediamonds earned $335,655 and won the 2020 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes. She is a half sister to stakes-winning Kimberlea K. Gayle Van Leer purchased the weanling colt from Havens Bloodstock Agency, which consigned him for Fairview. The colt is out of the stakes-winning Jump Start mare North Freeway and is a half brother to Cal-bred champion Take the One O One and stakes winner Square Deal.

California-bred Lieutenant Dan, a two-time graded stakes winner in 2021, represented his home state admirably at the Breeders’ Cup, held at Del Mar Nov. 5-6. In the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T), Lieutenant Dan fnished second as the 4-1 second choice, beaten only 11⁄4 lengths by the talented Golden Pal, who has his own California roots. Golden Pal led throughout the fve furlongs for jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. while Geovanni Franco had Lieutenant Dan in second throughout. At the wire Lieutenant Dan fnished 31⁄2 Cal-bred Lieutenant Dan (left) runs a good lengths ahead of second to Golden Pal third-place Charmaine’s Mia. Golden Pal stopped the timer in :55.22. Steve Miyadi trains Lieutenant Dan for owner Nick Alexander, who also bred the 5-year-old son of Grazen—Excusabull, by Indian Charlie. “He wasn’t ready to run against a rocket ship,” Miyadi said. “He ran great—probably the best race of his life.” Franco also praised Lieutenant Dan, saying, “He always tries very hard for us. I’m not disappointed in his efort.” Wesley Ward trains Golden Pal for Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Georg von Opel’s Westerberg. Randall Lowe bred the son of Uncle Mo—Lady Shipman, by Midshipman, in Florida and named the 3-year-old colt for his mentor, longtime California breeder John C. Mabee. Mabee and his wife, Betty, raced in the Golden Eagle name, and Calbred Best Pal was one of their fnest runners. In addition, Lady Shipman is out of the Cal-bred mare Sumthingtotalkabt.

■ Pontiff Gets First Winner Octavius Prime became the frst winner for Pontiff Oct. 29 when he led throughout a one-mile turf event at Golden Gate Fields. Ridden by Frank Alvarado, Octavius Prime defeated Tex Hanley by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:42.31. Tim McCanna trains Octavius Prime for breeder Tim Floyd’s Warlock Stables, which owns the 2-year-old Washington-bred colt with Kyle Digges, Gena Loper, and Helen

Myrick. Octavius Prime is out of the Harbor the Gold mare Basket of Gold. Pontiff is a son of Giant’s Causeway out of the Mr. Prospector mare Preach, who also produced major sire Pulpit. Bred by Claiborne Farm, Pontiff earned $126,481 on the track. Floyd previously stood the stallion at his private farm in Washington, but he moved Pontiff to Daehling Ranch to stand there in 2022 for $2,500. Warlock owns Pontiff with Daehling Ranch owners Justin and Julia Oldfeld and Perry Martin.

Anthony’s Cross at Sunny Creek Anthony’s Cross, one of the stallions featured in this fall’s Northern California stallion tour, is standing the 2022 breeding season at Sunny Creek Farm in Galt for $2,500. Joy’s Rocket, a 3-yearold daughter of Anthony’s Cross, is representing her sire well. She won the 2020 Letellier Memorial Stakes, the Songbird Stakes, and the My Dear Stakes. This year she fnished second by a head in the Lexus Raven Run Stakes (G2) and third in the Martha Washington Stakes. A son of Indian Charlie, Anthony’s Cross is out of the unraced Unbridled mare Screening. On the track, Anthony’s Cross earned $230,790 and won the 2011 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2).

California-bred stakes winner Tap Back has been retired to stud at Barton Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez. He will stand for $2,500. Richard Barton Enterprises bred Tap Back in partnership with Adena Springs. The 4-year-old is by multiple grade 1 winner Einstein out of the winning Tapit mare Tap Tap Ur It. The famTap Back ily includes graded winner Casino Magistrate. Racing for Richard Barton, Tap Back won in his racing debut and scored in the 2019 Golden State Juvenile Stakes. That same year he fnished second in the King Glorious Stakes and third in the I’m Smokin Stakes. Tap Back won two of eight races and earned a total of $183,550.

10 YEARS AGO MENSA HEAT earned $544,838 the hard way, primarily through a series of claiming and allowance races. However, in 2011 he won the $104,375 Pirate’s Bounty Stakes and the $84,500 On Trust Handicap, and throughout his career he also placed in three graded stakes. In the 71⁄2-furlong On Trust at Hollywood Park Dec. 18, Mensa Heat raced wide around the turn and closed late for jockey Joe Talamo to score by 11⁄2 lengths over Legal Separation in 1:28.68. Spud Spivens fnished third. Ted West trained Mensa Heat for Peter Redekop B.C. West had claimed the 5-year-old gelding for $25,000 in April of that year. Madeline Auerbach and David Abrams bred the son of Unusual Heat—Chi Chi Nette, by Ole.

Though California-bred REXY SEXY ran creditably throughout her three-season career, placing in three stakes at age 4 and earning a total of $201,925, she had her best year at 2 in 1996. She won four of six starts, including the $100,000 XTRA Sports 690 AM California Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes and the flly division of the $105,450 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes. In the latter, Dec. 27 at Santa Anita, she closed with a rush and then drew away for jockey Alex Solis to win by 13⁄4 lengths in 1:24.75 over Fun in Excess, with Fleet Lady third. Brian Lynch trained Rexy Sexy for owner/breeders Mr. and Mrs. Alvin E. Toffel. The daughter of Huddle Up—Mesquite Miss, by Mehmet, was foaled at Wilson Stock Farm in Hemet.

KING OF CRICKET began his career in Northern California, but he became a force in Southern California as well. The California-bred won six stakes, including the Palos Verdes Handicap at Santa Anita Dec. 28, 1971. Santa Anita’s stakes schedule was such that the Palos Verdes was run twice that year. King of Cricket had fnished third in it Jan. 2 before taking the Malibu Stakes just a week later. In the second Palos Verdes, King of Cricket stumbled leaving the gate, but jockey Howard Grant quickly got him in stride, and the gelding soon had the lead. Ultimately, King of Cricket won by six lengths over Brazen Brother. Corradini and Dorney bred the 4-yearold son of Coursing—Our Cricket, by Stymie. Noble Threewitt trained him for Corradini and Nuccio.

With your support, the California Toroughbred Foundation awards much-needed scholarships to third-year equine veterinarian students at the University of California, Davis and at Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona. Tese students are learning the newest technology and diagnostic techniques available today. Our Rowan Research Fellowship rewards a UC Davis graduate student in equine research. Several recipients have joined the safety teams at Santa Anita and Del Mar. Our research fellow just accomplished her PhD in genetic research of the Toroughbred. Te California Toroughbred Foundation has and continues to have the well-being of Toroughbreds on and of the track as its focus, as it has for decades. Evolving from origins in the 1940s, the Foundation has promoted this through education of veterinarians and crucial research. Veterinarians today are being drawn in greater numbers to practice in areas other than Toroughbreds. Tis fact alone underscores the importance of our main educational eforts. Finneus has been coming very close to those headlines, running second in this year’s Best Pal Stakes (G2) and Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (G1). He became a stakes winner on the frst of two Breeders’ Cup afternoons at Del Mar, scoring in the $178,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes Nov. 5. Terry Lovingier has been responsible for Finneus’ entire pedigree. Lovingier bred the colt’s dam, My Fiona, and raced her in partnership with Tom Beckerle and Amanda Navarro to the 2014 California-bred 2-year-old female championship title. Lovingier brought Finneus’ sire, Stay Tirsty, to California, and he also bred stakes-winning Fi Fi Pharoah, a half sister to Finneus by American Pharoah. “His mother won the female version of this race,” Lovingier said.

Together, Finneus and Fi Fi Pharoah have earned nearly that much, and both could continue to earn much more during their careers. With the seven-furlong Juvenile attracting Finneus as well as Slow Down Andy, an impressive maiden winner by Nyquist, and I’m Smokin Stakes winner Joker Boy, that trio’s nine rivals all went of at double or even triple digits in the wagering. and then Joker Boy. A phalanx of runners set of in the frst fight of the Juvenile, and jockey Joel Rosario had Finneus alone on his own in ninth. Tat was an excellent position from which Finneus could pass horses around the turn. Racing four wide into the stretch, Finneus challenged Slow Down Andy and Fast Draw Munnings, defeating Slow Down Andy by a half-length in 1:23. Slow Down Andy had three-quarters of a length advantage over Fast Draw Munnings. “He’s such a big horse—he’s still learning how to run,” said Lovingier. “He’s just fnally getting his feet under himself, and, hopefully, he’ll keep moving forward. He’s a horse that keeps on trying.” Lovingier campaigns Finneus with Navarro and Naseer Mohammed Fasihuddin. Walther Solis trains the colt. “He’s a special horse, and every single race he’s learning more and more,” Solis said. “He’s going to get to the point where he really has it fgured out. Now he’s switching leads on time. Te frst couple of races he didn’t want to switch leads, and that makes a lot of diference.”

GEORGE KRIKORIAN’S HOMEBRED MR. BIG FILLIES RUN 1-2 AT DEL MAR eorge Krikorian has a big stallion in so many ways. Mr. Big is, in fact, physically a big horse, and since Krikorian moved him from Kentucky to California, the stallion has been putting up some big numbers on the sire lists. Mr. Big also had a big day at Del Mar Nov. 5, when his daughters Big Switch and Big Novel ran one-two in the $175,000 Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes.

“I think it’s great,” said Krikorian, who bred and races both fllies. “One had a little more experience than the other, but the way Big Switch won, she kind of showed that she had quite a bit of talent.” Big Novel was the Krikorian flly with more experience. She had run three times, with a win, a second, and a third, the lastnamed in Del Mar’s Generous Portion

Stakes. Big Switch had run only once, breaking her maiden by 11⁄2 lengths at Del Mar Aug. 20 despite a trip that included getting bumped and having to race wide. Te seven-furlong Juvenile Fillies, part of the undercard of the frst day of the Breeders’ Cup, drew a feld of eight 2-year-old California-bred fllies. Bettors made Big Novel the 8-5 favorite, with Vivacious Vanessa, another impressive maiden winner, the narrow second choice over Big Switch. John Sadler trains Big Switch and Big Novel for Krikorian. Jockey Joe Bravo had ridden both of those fllies as well as Vivacious Vanessa in their respective maiden victories, and he piloted Big Novel in

the Juvenile Fillies. Sadler found a worthy substitute for Big Switch in New York superstar Irad Ortiz Jr., who went on to win three Breeders’ Cup races over the two days. Big Novel joined Vronsky Feint and It’s Simple on the lead early, sneaking through on the rail to poke her head in front around the turn. It’s Simple stayed with Big Novel, and then Big Switch moved up outside of both of them to challenge. It’s Simple backed up, leaving the two Mr. Big fllies to duke it out. Krikorian’s duo pulled away from the rest of the feld, and then in midstretch Big Switch started drawing of from her stablemate. Ultimately, Big Switch defeated Big Novel by 23⁄4 lengths in 1:22.39. It was another 61⁄2 lengths back to third-place Vivacious Vanessa. “She did all the work in the race,” said Ortiz. “I didn’t have to do much. She just ran and that’s all there was to it.” Krikorian bred Big Switch from the unraced Malibu Moon mare Two Faced Moon and Big Novel from his unraced homebred Heatseeker mare Steamy Novel. “Tese are young horses—they’re just getting going,” said Krikorian of the duo. “And the nice thing is they’re both improving.”

A WOMAN FOR ALL SEASONS

ne of the prominent names in California racing is that of Gayle Van Leer, a former trainer and farm manager turned successful bloodstock agent who has been behind a parade of graded stakes winners for decades. After trying her hand in just about every aspect of the sport, Van Leer is more than happy with her bloodstock business and continues to excel at her favorite sport. Although she is best known as the racing manager for perennial leading California-based owner Golden Eagle Farm, Van Leer began her career in racing well before that gig. “I started as an exercise rider,” she said. “I was working the 2-year-old sales, and I was a really good rider, which got people’s attention.”

She ultimately opened her own training barn, taking in second-string horses for leading trainers around Southern California. Her program at San Luis Rey Downs in the 1980s helped develop Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old male Roving Boy. How did she land the famous Golden Eagle position? Van Leer laughed while remembering the day she marched right up to John Mabee, who owned the farm with wife, Betty. “I happened to be passing by the racing oﬃce, where two trainers were arguing with each other,” she said. “Both of them worked for Golden Eagle. Tey both wanted to enter a horse in the same race, but they couldn’t. One trainer said it happened all the time; there were so many horses and it was tough to get into a race. I walked up to John and said, ‘I’d like to

talk to you about why you should hire me.’ ” Mabee was only startled for a moment. “He was taken aback, but then he started quizzing me,” Van Leer said. A breakfast meeting later in the week resulted in the job: Van Leer would manage the Mabeees’ racing stable. “I used my training background and organizational skills and my networking with all these trainers that I already knew,” Van Leer said. “It was just a matter of coordinating everyone together and making it fair so that everyone had a chance to run. I added order to the operation so it could run more smoothly, horses could be placed better. And the rest is history.” Best Pal was a yearling when Van Leer joined the team. Tat California-bred legend went on to earn $5,668,245 in an era without the Dubai World Cup (G1) or Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1). “Go forward the nine years I was there, and you’ll see Dramatic Gold, Fantastic Look, and Jeanne Jones,” Van Leer said. Although her time as Golden Eagle racing manager is long over, Van Leer still hunts for familiar pedigrees when scouring the sales catalogues. “It was such an infuential period of time,” she said. “I’ve found the pedigrees popping up as far away as Australia.” Now Van Leer operates a bloodstock agency. “Basically, I’m a real estate agent for horses,” she said.

n rare occasions a pregnant mare develops an increased amount of fuid within her placental membrane compartments, known as hydrops. Her abdomen becomes suddenly much larger than you would expect for her stage of pregnancy.

Dr. Ahmed Tibary, professor of theriogenology at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Washington State University, says there are two types of hydrops in mares. Sometimes people might confuse these conditions with a third type, so the defnition is important. “Te location of excess fuid can be either in what we call the frst water bag (that appears when the mare is foaling, or more commonly breaks and the fuid rushes out), which contains the amber-colored allantoic fuid,” Tibary said. “Te second type is an accumulation of fuid within the amnion 36

sac (second water bag), which surrounds the foal. “Some people hear about fetal hydrops in humans—when the fuid is accumulated in the fetus, rather than around it— but this is not the case in horses.” Te two types of fetal membrane hydrops in horses are very diferent in terms of prognosis and also the speed of accumulation and amount of fuid. “Te most dangerous and the most rapid accumulation is hydrops allantois,” said Tibary. “Tis creates a serious danger to the mare, and her health can deteriorate quickly. Te second type (hydrops amnion) develops slowly, and often we can manage the mare more easily. Tere have been some cases described in which the mare can even be managed through parturition (without emergency treatment beforehand to drain the fuid) and an assisted birth. “Te most common type is abnormal accumulation of fuid

in the allantoic sac, but this is still quite rare. We see maybe one case a year or so, but in some areas where there are more broodmares, there might be more cases. Te normal range of allantoic fuid volume in a normal pregnancy is somewhere between 10 and 20 liters. With hydrops, there may be 10 times that amount, and the mare’s abdomen becomes huge.” You can almost see the mare growing more abdominal girth. “When we have a suspicion that a mare may have this problem, we recommend that the mare be monitored with daily measurements of her girth,” said Tibary. “Some of these mares will have an obvious daily increase. In any abnormal development of girth size, we have to start thinking that it might be an abnormal pregnancy. “Before the mare shows signs of large amounts of fuid, we need to do something because there is risk for her to rupture the abdomen.

“With hydrops allantois, the early signs include the mare spending a lot of time lying down. Ten she becomes lethargic and doesn’t want to eat because there’s no room for much food in her GI tract. Tere may be only scant feces. Also, there is so much pressure against the diaphragm that she may start showing respiratory signs; it’s harder for her to breathe.” Te mare will also be reluctant to move around. She might have ventral edema, swollen legs, etc. “Hydrops amnion is less spectacular and less frequently seen in mares, than is hydrops allantois,” said Tibary. “We may see asymmetrical increase in the girth of the mare.” It is important to monitor the pregnancy once the mare is bred to make sure everything is progressing normally. “We recommend the frst check at 14 days, then at 30 days, and again at 60 days,” said Tibary. “Even if everything is fne in those early stages, the mare should be monitored throughout the pregnancy. Any time you suspect something might not be quite right—either the mare spending more time lying down, reluctance to move, or any visible abnormalities—she should be examined. If she has respiratory distress, this becomes an emergency.” Someone should be keeping an eye on the mare to make sure there is normal progression of pregnancy. “If a mare is sufering from hydrops allantois, the frst indication is our inability to easily do a transrectal examination,” said Tibary. “Te veterinarian can hardly put a hand into the rectum because there is so much fuid in the uterus and a lot of pressure against the rectum. With ultrasound we may be able to see the fetus, but more commonly we cannot; we only see fuid. Once someone determines which problem this is, the treatment will be a little diferent. “It also depends on the state of the mare and her stage of pregnancy,” said Tibary. “If she is close to parturition, we may give her a little time, particularly if we think it is hydrops amnion. If she’s close to foaling and relatively stable, we can often manage the hydrops amnion. But hydrops allantois is much trickier. “If she is still far away from parturition—and we might see this condition starting as early as seven months, though it might not be noticed until about nine to 10 months—this is more difcult. If it’s hydrops allantois, the biggest challenge is to avoid hypotensive shock and collapse of the mare as we

drain of the fuid. If we do anything abruptly and eliminate all of that fuid quickly, the mare’s system can’t handle it.” Tis treatment cannot be handled very well on the farm. Obstetrical complications are common, and then because the placenta is abnormal and the fetus may also be abnormal, there is high risk for retained placenta and all the problems that may result from that.” With hydrops amnion, if the mare is close to foaling, there is a chance to get her to the end of pregnancy, but this is rare. “Te viability and health of the mare are our frst priority,” said Tibary. “We are trying to save the mare and not the foal. We hope we can save the mare so she might be able to have more foals in the future.” In these cases, the foal is probably too compromised to survive. Mare owners usually ask what causes this situation, whether it might be genetic, and whether future pregnancies and foals would be normal. “Tere are so few of these conditions that this is hard to study, and we don’t have good answers,” said Tibary. “Te cause is not clear for either situation. Tere are some hypotheses and suspicions about hydrops amnion, which de-

velops very slowly. It has been suspected that this condition is linked to some abnormality in the foal, and failure of the fetus to swallow.” Troughout the pregnancy, once the fetal organs are developed, including the GI tract, the fetus swallows some of the fuid that surrounds it. If the fetus is not swallowing any of the fuid and it is not resorbed in the foal, it slowly builds up. Tis could be a cause of extra amniotic fuid, but hasn’t been proven. “Tere might also be a placental problem that could cause overproduction of fuid, or a decrease in placental function that normally absorbs fuid,” said Tibary. “We don’t have any research to show what’s actually happening. We only have

A fair number of these conditions have been associated with a deformed fetus, especially facial deformities as well as other congenital abnormalities. “One fetus that we had here in our hospital had some spectacular deformities and an abnormal umbilical cord. Tere is not enough data, however, so we merely say there might be a possible heritability, and we recommend that the mare not be bred to the same stallion again.” It’s also not a good idea to rebreed the mare very soon. “Tese mares go through a lot,” said Tibary. “It’s not an easy pregnancy or parturition, and we are very lucky if we save the mare, in either type of situation, and it’s extremely rare to get a live foal. Te main thing is to try to save the mare. Ten we recommend breeding her to another stallion. “If the mare had a seriously difcult parturition and it’s not a Toroughbred mare, we usually recommend that she be used as an embryo donor so she won’t have to bring another foal to term. “I remember one case we worked with in which the mare went through a lot of trauma and survived. It was a Morgan mare, and she was amazing. We took hours and hours to drain the fuid slowly, replacing it with IV fuids, and she did go through foaling with serious dystocia and survived. Tese mares are not good candidates for C-section or any surgery because they are already so compromised that you’d probably lose them.”’ Fortunately, hydrops is not a very common problem in mares. Tese conditions also occur in cattle and happen more frequently in cloned animals. Once a mare has gone through this type of stressful condition, it is not a good idea to rebreed “Tis hasn’t been described in horsher very soon es, but for some reason tends to occur occasionally with cows carrying cloned fetuses,” said Tibary.
