From the EXECUTIVE CORNER TY Green CTBA BOARD MEMBER
GOLDEN GATE CLOSURE DELAYED UNTIL JUNE “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” —President John F. Kennedy
U
nless you’ve spent the last few weeks in Aaron Rogers’ blackout room, you know that a monumental change has come to California racing. Te Stronach Group announced that Golden Gate Fields, which has been running continuously since 1941, would be closing its doors forever in December of this year. Tis announcement rightly sent shockwaves through the industry and those who depend on it for their livelihood. Without a permanent base of racing in Northern California, the hundreds of horses stabled at Golden Gate would have to either move to Southern California or leave the state. While the Stronach Group encouraged Northern California trainers and owners to relocate to Santa Anita, most were uncertain about whether they wanted to uproot their lives to seek competition on a new circuit. Although the Stronach Group ofered assurances that races would be available for Northern California horses with higher purses, there was a genuine concern as to how many of those horses would ft in the seemingly higher level of Santa Anita racing. Many Northern California connections considered either leaving the state or leaving the game altogether. In short, California racing faced the greatest challenge in its illustrious history. We at the CTBA recognized immediately the potential impact the Golden Gate closure could have on our members. We also recognized that the key short-term issue was time. Northern California racing interests needed time to either establish an
alternative racing circuit or plan a relocation south. While we had to plan for the scheduled Golden Gate closure, our immediate focus was on brokering an agreement between all interested parties for more time. While this may not seem like a daunting task, given the time frame, it took a monumental efort to bring about a resolution. CTBA ofcials worked with the CHRB, CARF, the Stronach Group and the TOC toward some resolution. Literally hundreds of hours of negotiations took place over the period of a few weeks and, fnally, at the 11th hour, a compromise acceptable to all parties was reached by which Golden Gate would remain open through June 2024. Tat extension gives CARF, or any other interested party, an opportunity to establish a Northern California racing circuit. Te resolution is not perfect, but it is the best that could be reached. By now you’ve no doubt heard that the resolution allows Northern California racing revenue to remain in the North while there is racing in the North. Tat foundation allows CARF or other interested parties to build a circuit utilizing existing facilities. Tere is certainly more work to be done, and the CTBA will provide whatever assistance it can toward that goal. Te CTBA frmly supports racing in both Southern and Northern California. Tat brings us to the “future” portion of President Kennedy’s quote at the beginning of this article. Like it or not, the future of racing in California is tied to economics. In closing Golden Gate Fields, the Stronach Group cites economic losses as its primary reason. Te challenge for Northern California will be to use the existing facilities at Sacramento, Pleasanton, and Fresno (and hopefully Santa Rosa) to create a viable circuit.
Tere are reasons to be optimistic. Te Fairs all have fxed infrastructure in place. Some work will need to be done, such as adding turf courses where possible, but the CARF facilities are in excellent condition and don’t carry the deferred maintenance costs of Golden Gate. Moreover, the closure of Turf Paradise, a sad day for our Arizona neighbors, does provide an opportunity for CARF to fashion racing programs to attract those horses to the new circuit. It is axiomatic that with more horses, the felds are bigger and handle is higher. Larger handles translate to bigger purses. We are very optimistic that the “new” Northern circuit is the beginning of a new era. At the same time, the CTBA is working with the Stronach Group to enhance the rewards and opportunities for California breeders. It should go without saying, but the CTBA encourages all its members to support Northern California racing. A very signifcant number of California-breds run in the North, and supporting that circuit is critical to our breeding industry. Te CTBA will be working with CARF to do whatever we can to enhance racing in the North and looks forward to a long and bright future for California racing. Finally, we cannot emphasize enough the amount of work, dedication, and cooperation that went into reaching this resolution. Te obvious players, who we thank, are CARF, the Stronach Group, and the TOC. While no one individual was responsible for the result, we want to recognize the efort of the CHRB, particularly board member Oscar Gonzalez. Oscar is dedicated to protecting racing in both Northern and Southern California and was relentless in making sure a compromise was reached.

Southern California Thoroughbred farm Rancho Temescal has welcomed incoming tenant Fresh Start Sport Horses. The non-proft organization retrains racehorses for alternative careers under the direction of founder and head trainer Cassandra Andersson. “We are honored to welcome Fresh Start Sport Horses to our farm,” said Tim Cohen, president of Rancho Temescal. “My family has long operated under the philosophy of ‘always care,’ not just aftercare, for our athletes.” Over the past seven years, approximately 50 horses campaigned by the Cohen family’s Red Baron’s Barn or owned by Rancho Temescal clients have been rehomed through the Fresh Start program. They include $1,384,604-earner Itsinthepost and $397,140-earner Si Sage, each of whom carried Red Baron’s silks to multiple graded stakes victories. “When we learned recently that Fresh Start was considering closing their facilities due to a lack of resources,” Cohen said, “Red Baron’s Barn jumped at the opportunity to provide signifcant funding and housing so Cassandra and her crew can continue their important work here at Rancho Temescal.” Founded in 2015, Fresh Start Sport Horses retrains Thoroughbreds for a variety of riding disciplines, including dressage, hunter/jumper, eventing, and trail riding. Andersson is currently overseeing 18 horses at various levels of training in the Fresh Start program.

Amazombie investigates his Eclipse Award for champion sprinter
Amazombie California-bred champion Amazombie loved attention. When this magazine planned a feature on retired Cal-breds at Old Friends in Kentucky, Amazombie happily played with his Eclipse Award through a fence so that Old Friends could get an interesting photograph for the article. When CBS Sunday Morning flmed at Old Friends, Amazombie obliged their camera people too. “He looked at the camera and his eyes perked up, and he started to run like the wind,” said Michael Blowen of Old Friends. “It was dusk and he was kicking up the dust as he went and his feet were barely touching the ground. Watching him run was unbelievable. Rapid Redux tried to go with him, but it was no contest.” Everyone at Old Friends was deeply saddened to have to announce that Amazombie, a horse with an abundance of personality, had to be euthanized Sept. 18 due to a fractured ankle. He was 16. Amazombie was one of the leading Cal-breds in recent times. The gelding won the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) by a neck in a game performance at Churchill Downs. That was his fnal race that season, a year when he also captured the Ancient Title Stakes (G1), Potrero Grande Stakes (G2), Tiznow Stakes, and Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes en route to being voted his Eclipse Award as champion sprinter. In 2012, Amazombie won the Potrero Grande again and the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1). He was also named champion Cal-bred sprinter of 2011 and 2012. Gregg Anderson bred the son of Northern Afeet—Wilshe Amaze, by In Excess. The gelding was famously an afterthought when trainer Bill Spawr thought he was buying another horse for just $5,000. Through a misunderstanding, the private sale was actually for two horses, with Amazombie thrown in. It may be the best purchase Spawr ever made. Spawr owned Amazombie in partnership with Thomas Sanford and trained him throughout four seasons of racing. During that time, Amazombie started 29 times, with 12 wins, fve seconds, and six thirds for total earnings of $1,920,378. He is currently 13th on the list of all-time leading Cal-bred earners (see page 27). Spawr and Sanford retired Amazombie to Old Friends in 2014. The gelding was a popular resident. “I like all of our retirees,” said Blowen. “I love just a handful, and we lost one of those.” Spawr noted how much he appreciated the care and attention Amazombie received at Old Friends. “He was so much fun—you just can’t imagine,” said the trainer.

Points Offthebench
10 YEARS AGO California celebrated the talented sprinter POINTS OFFTHEBENCH and then mourned him all in the span of one month, October 2013. At Santa Anita Oct. 5, California-bred Points Offthebench captured the $250,500 Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G1). Jockey Mike Smith brought him from off the pace to defeat Goldencents by a half-length in 1:08 for six furlongs. Tim Yakteen trained Points Offthebench for owners Donnie Crevier and Charles Martin. Gary Rocks bred the 4-yearold gelded son of Benchmark— Mo Chuisle, by Free House. Points Offthebench was winning his sixth race in eight starts and his second consecutive grade 1, following the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1). Tragically, while training for the Breeders’ Cup, Points Offthebench suffered a fatal injury Oct. 26. He was posthumously voted an Eclipse Award as champion sprinter of 2013 as well as Cal-bred Horse of the Year, champion older male, and champion sprinter.
25 YEARS AGO INDIAHOMA only won one stakes during his long career, but it was a good one. The Califor-
nia-bred drew the rail in a feld of 14 for the $175,000 California Cup Mile on turf at Santa Anita Oct. 31, 1998. Running next to last early under jockey Corey Nakatani, Indiahoma had to swing far wide to pass his rivals. Still seventh in midstretch, Indiahoma put on a burst of speed to score by 11⁄2 lengths in 1:37 over longshot Longliner, with favored Native Desert third. Howard Beddo bred the 4-year-old gelded son of Salt Lake—Ruffetta, by Sharpen Up, and owned him in partnership with trainer Henry Moreno. Indiahoma spent much of his career in claiming and allowance company, but he was a hard-knocking gelding. He started 72 times over seven seasons, with eight wins, 10 seconds, and 19 thirds, for total earnings of $601,337.
50 YEARS AGO California-bred IPSE adored a sloppy track, and that’s just what he got for the Tanforan Handicap at Bay Meadows Oct. 7, 1973. Despite the scratch of probable favorite Bicker, Ipse went off as the 13-1 sixth choice in a seven-horse feld. Jockey Merlin Volzke patiently rode Ipse in the 11⁄16-mile race as Imaginative and Pataha Prince vied for the lead. Ipse made his move on the fnal turn and reached the leaders nearing the quarter pole. He drew off to score by two lengths over Reluctant Lord in 1:444⁄5, with Soft Victory third. Charlie Comiskey trains Ipse for owner Ruth Svihla, who also bred the 5-year-old son of Indian Hemp— Lycaste, by Succession. It was the ffth stakes win for Ipse, all on the Northern California circuit. He ultimately won 14 of 79 races for earnings of $166,647.

alifornia-breds dominated the catalog and brought high prices at the Sept. 26 Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale in Pomona. Catalog pages with good current Cal-bred runners attracted attention, as a half brother to multiple stakes winner Kings River Knight topped the sale at $250,000, followed by a full brother to Cal-bred champion Finneus at $225,000.
A Cal-bred half brother to Kings River Knight by Vronsky topped the sale at $250,000
Twelve horses sold for $100,000 and above, with four hitting $200,000 or more. Eleven of the six-fgure horses were Cal-breds. “We were very busy with trainers looking for Cal-breds,” said Fasig-Tipton California representative Mike Machowsky. “Te Cal-bred program is very strong. People were looking for quality, what they need, and what fts their program.” Machowsky credited California breeders with upgrading their broodmares, getting Cal-breds by Kentucky sires, and then breeding those mares back to California sires. Six of the six-fgure sellers were by California sires—two each by Vronsky and Stay Tirsty, one by Mr. Big, and one by Acclamation—and fve were Cal-breds by out-of-state sires. Te sale topper blended bloodlines from two of California’s leading breeders: the Johnston family’s Old English Rancho and John Harris’ Harris Farms. Old English and Kenneth Tevelde bred the colt from the Poteen mare Seasontoperfection. His sire, Vronsky, stood at Old English and then at Harris prior to his death in 2021 at age 22. I’m going to put a lot of mares on him. Tere’s another good one coming up, a Flatter colt (out of My Fiona).” Lovingier sold a Flatter Cal-bred colt at the sale for $200,000. Te youngster, purchased by Steve Gasparrelli’s Slugo Racing, is out of the Arch mare Rapid Repair. Gasparrelli said that Mike Puype would train the colt. “I like Flatters—they did pretty well at Del Mar, more maybe on the turf side, but they ran good on dirt too,” Gasparrelli said. “I like any kind of the Arch horses, and the horse’s conformation was really good. And it’s a Cal-bred. I’ve probably got 20 Cal-breds now.” Barton Toroughbreds sold fve of the six-fgure horses. Four were Cal-breds, while the ffth, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Improbable—Diva’s Tribute, by Henny Hughes, sold for $200,000. She was the highest-priced flly and went to California owner-breeders Eric and Sharon Waller. Te Wallers especially wanted this flly because they began the family with the second dam, Cal-bred Swiss Diva. Tat daughter of Swiss Yodeler won the 2006 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes and was graded stakes-placed for them. Te $200,000 flly is a half sister to their homebred graded winner Spectator, who died after producing only one foal. “We have a ranch in Murrieta and a home in Rancho Santa Fe,” Eric said. “I’ve raised Cal-breds my whole life. I couldn’t let this flly go.” Barton sold another high-priced flly, a Cal-bred daughter of Mendelssohn— Ringmistress, by Bandini. Sara Landon bought the half sister to stakes winner Ring Leader for $160,000. California sire Mr. Big had recently been in the news when his Cal-bred daughter Ceiling Crusher won the $1 million Cotillion Stakes at Parx Sept. 23. Te stallion had a yearling colt, Johnson’s Magic, sell for $150,000 to Legacy Racing. Te colt, consigned by Kim McCarthy’s McCarthy Bloodstock and bred by

He was raised at Pete and Evelyn Parrella’s Legacy Ranch, where Mr. Big stands. “We had the colt at the ranch and Terry (Legacy manager Terry Knight) really liked it,” said Pete Parrella. “Mr. Big’s been a really good sire.” Te bulk of the sale was devoted to yearlings, with 158 yearlings grossing $5,218,000 for an average of $33,025 and a median of $17,000, com-
pared to the 2022 average of $29,076 and $15,000. Following the yearlings, Fasig-Tipton ofered a horses of racing age session, which brought the total numbers to 185 grossing $5,751,500 for an average of $31,089. “Overall, the yearling market was very positive,” said Machowsky. “Our average and median are each up 13%. It was very solid. We were very pleased with it. Tings are going the right way, and we are looking forward to next year.”

el Mar and Saratoga are the premier summer meetings on each coast. California-breds always play a major role at Del Mar, and this past season they took graded stakes trophies at both venues. For good measure, Ceiling Crusher added a $1 million race at Parx. Closing Remarks ended her superb Del Mar season by winning the $250,500 John C. Mabee Stakes (G2T) Sept. 9. Tat had followed wins by Ceiling Crusher in the $151,500 Torrey Pines Stakes (G3) Sept. 2 at Del Mar and One in Vermillion in the $485,000 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes (G1) Aug. 26 at Saratoga.

And then, just two days into autumn, Ceiling Crusher returned to competition, this time across the country at Parx in Pennsylvania. On a sloppy track, she led throughout in the Cotillion Stakes (G1) to defeat multiple grade 1 winner Pretty Mischievous. Closing Remarks, Ceiling Crusher, and One in Vermillion come from two of the top breeding operations in the state. John Harris’ Harris Farms bred and owns Closing Remarks and bred Ceiling Crusher, while Richard Barton Enterprises bred One in Vermillion. CEILING CRUSHER

in the July 27 Fleet Treat Stakes, her only lifetime loss. She already had two stakes wins in the Evening Jewel Stakes and Melair Stakes against Cal-breds, but she was about to become a breakout star. Little did anyone know she was just warming up in the one-mile Torrey Pines. As the 2-1 favorite, Ceiling Crusher vied for the early lead, but quickly took command for jockey Edwin Maldonado. She drew out in the stretch to win by six lengths in 1:37.41. Tree weeks later, trainer Doug O’Neill had shipped Ceiling Crusher to Parx for the Cotillion, a 11⁄16-mile event that attracted eight others, including Pretty Mischievous. CLOSING REMARKS
Closing Remarks has impressed almost from the beginning, earning a Cal-bred championship as a 3-year-old in 2021. But 2023 is turning out to be her year. Now 5, she has put it all together, with the Mabee her third graded victory of the season. Her frst came in the April 1 Royal Heroine Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita. Following a couple of troubled trips in the Wilshire Stakes (G3T) and Gamely Stakes (G1T), also at Santa Anita, she added the Aug. 12 Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2T)
at Del Mar prior to the 11⁄8-mile Mabee, named for another major California breeder who served as Del Mar’s chairman and president for many years prior to his death in 2002. Six older fllies and mares lined up, with Closing Remarks going of as the 7-5 favorite. Second-choice Turnerloose took over from early leader Free and Humble heading into the backstretch following a leisurely :24.12 quarter-mile. Meanwhile, jockey Umberto Rispoli let Closing Remarks gallop along easily toward the back.

Stakes (G1) and Test Stakes (G1). It was a big ask for Ceiling Crusher, but she faced it with elan. Maldonado took her to the front from post 2, and despite having never competed over anything but a fast track, she handled the slop just fne. Pretty Mischievous wasn’t going to give up without a fght and closed ground in the stretch, but Ceiling Crusher held her of to score by a halflength in 1:45.69. “She brought everything that she was showing us back home on the road,” O’Neill said. “She has that high cruising speed, and she carried it all the way to the wire.” Ceiling Crusher is not nominated to the Breeders’ Cup, and O’Neill said it would be up to the owners whether to “write a big check.” Te flly earned a big check in the Cotillion—$564,000—to bring her total earnings to $938,400. But O’Neill said that the Cotillion had been the goal and was “our Breeders’ Cup.” A daughter of Mr. Big—Palisadesprincess, by Indian Charlie, Ceiling Crusher was part of the Harris Farms consignment to the 2021 California Toroughbred Breeders Association Northern California sale, where Tari Brocklebank bought her for $22,000. Luis Mendez trained the flly for owner Dan Northrup prior to her private purchase by her current ownership group: Wonderland Racing Stables, Todd Cady, Tim Kasparof, and Ty Leatherman.

“I was a bit nervous, to be honest, because it was such a slow pace and she was a bit farther back than I expected her to be,” said Carla Gaines, who trains Closing Remarks. “But Umberto said, ‘Don’t worry about it—just give me the key.’ So that’s what I did.” Rispoli knew his mare. He asked Closing Remarks midway on the fnal turn, and she responded brilliantly, mowing down her rivals from the outside in the stretch and drawing away to score by 13⁄4 lengths over Turnerloose in 1:48.23. “I know this flly does well sprinting late,” Rispoli said. “I ran my flly basically the way that I was feeling her. Te way she ran today, I think she can run a mile and a quarter.” A daughter of deceased Vronsky, who stood at Harris Farms, Closing Remarks is out of the unraced Unusual Heat mare Orange Cove. Harris has shepherded Closing Remarks’ family back to the second dam, Aspen Gal, a $42,000 purchase at the 2005 Keeneland November sale. With the Mabee, Closing Remarks was winning her sixth race in 22 starts, and she also has fve seconds and four thirds, for a total bankroll of $861,320. ONE IN VERMILLION
One in Vermillion became a grade 1 winner in a way no one wants to—at the expense of an injury to another horse. Certainly, One in Vermillion ran well in the Jerkens, but his victory was hollow when New York Tunder, who was leading in the stretch, sufered a catastrophic injury and tragically could not be saved. In other circumstances, One in Vermillion’s story would be a classic “little guy makes good.” Owner Jonathan Kalman bought the colt for just $26,000 at the 2021 Arizona Toroughbred Breeders’ Association mixed sale and put him in training at Turf Paradise with Esteban Martinez. One in Vermillion had won stakes at Turf Paradise, Sunland Park, and Santa Anita and placed in stakes at Canterbury Park, Prairie Meadows, and Mountaineer. Most were listed races, though in his one graded foray, One in Vermillion fnished third in the Aug. 6 West Virginia Derby (G3). Tat prompted Martinez, who also serves as the colt’s exercise rider, to van him to Saratoga from Canterbury Park 22

One in Vermillion, ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., was the second-longest shot of the sixhorse feld at 19-1. New York Tunder led right from the start, while One in Vermillion ran last early before starting to make up ground around the turn and into the stretch. With the big lead New York Tunder had built up, One in Vermillion in all likelihood would have ended up an honorable second. Martinez, while proud of his horse, mourned the loss of New York Tunder, as did all of the race’s participants. “I thought this horse could run well in here. He tries hard all the time. He came from the back and he did great,” Martinez said. “I feel really bad about the rider and the horse.” One in Vermillion, a 3-year-old son of Army Mule—Given Star, by Any Given Saturday, raised his lifetime earnings to $653,840. ith Slow Down Andy and Te Chosen Vron becoming the latest California-bred millionaires, let’s remember the very frst one, a nearly black whirlwind named Native Diver, who loved to get loose on the lead and crush his competition. During the 1960s, he did so frequently in the course of his 37 wins in 81 starts over seven seasons, which included an incredible three editions of the Hollywood Gold Cup. Native Diver was one of the most popular horses ever foaled in California. He had a personality to match, as he

played to the crowds, especially in the paddock. Te fans loved him, and he lapped up the adoration. Bred and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Louis K. Shapiro and trained by Buster Millerick, Native Diver was a 1959 son of Imbros—Fleet Diver, by Devil Diver. He received what turned out to be the perfect name after Te Jockey Club turned down the Shapiros’ frst fve top choices. From there he began his assault on all of his competition year after year. As Native Diver’s reputation grew, so did his legend and his bankroll. He carried weight successfully, including 133 pounds to victory at age 8, racing in California in all but one of his starts, and racking up 34 stakes victories. Tus, it was only ftting that Native Diver became

Hollywood Gold Cup Wins 1
1) Native Diver won his frst Hollywood Gold Cup at age 6 in 1965, sizzling on the lead through fractions of :221⁄5, :444⁄5, and 1:084⁄5, crossing the wire fve lengths ahead while completing 11⁄4 miles in 2:001⁄5 2) For his second Gold Cup win in 1966, Native Diver bested his previous time, clocking the distance in 2:00 and defeating O’Hara and Travel Orb while again setting all of the fractions and scoring by 43⁄4 lengths

3) O’Hara stumbled and lost his rider at the start of the 1967 Gold Cup, resulting in this bizarre fnish photo of Native Diver winning for the third time while behind the riderless horse, but fve lengths ahead of Pretense while running 11⁄4 miles in 1:584⁄5
California’s frst millionaire, going past even the mighty Swaps, who in the previous decade earned $848,900. Native Diver died of colic in 1967 at age 8, nine days after winning his fnal race, the Del Mar Handicap. He left behind not only his record and that indelible mark as the frst Cal-bred millionaire, but also memories of his character. “I’ll never forget one of the last races he ran,” Jerry Lambert, his regular rider, once said. “In the post parade he suddenly stopped, turned towards the Tote board, and just stared. It was as though he was reading the odds on him and couldn’t believe it. Ten he turned squarely around, faced the stands, and stared at the people. He really brought down the house. He knew he was good, and he loved every moment of it.”

The following pages spotlight 12 Thoroughbred farms on the West Coast, each of whose purpose is to produce healthy, strong and talented horses who can successfully represent the local breeding and racing industry in the future. The farms are diverse in size and scope and are situated throughout the Golden State—south from San Diego to north of San Francisco and from the coastal areas over to the desert regions. The services they offer also differ, offering the choice of small boarding and lay-up farms to major facilities with complete training centers.
ARROYO VISTA FARM
San Diego County’s Finest Thoroughbred Farm rroyo Vista Farm is a new facility opened in early 2021 A offering options for breeding, foaling, boarding, sale preparation and lay-ups. The farm is located in Valley Center, California on the property that was previously known as Valley Creek Farm. Arroyo Vista is the home of Visitant, the only stallion by Ghostzapper standing in California, as well as Texas Ryano, the only graded stakes winning stallion by Curlin standing in California. Visitant is a multiple stakes winner and track record setter for 6 ½ furlongs. He is also graded stakes placed on the dirt and turf going two turns. His versatility has won him races from 5 ½ furlongs to 1 1/8 miles with current earnings of $712,927. He won the Holiday Cheer Stakes in January of 2023 and then stood his frst season at Arroyo Vista Farm. At the close of the 2023 breeding season, he successfully returned to the track, placing in the Gr II Del Mar Mile. Visitant will race through the remaining 2023 season and then resume his stallion duties. We are eagerly awaiting his frst crop of foals in 2024. Texas Ryano is a multiple grade 2 winner by Curlin, with total earnings of $455,045. He is the only graded stakes winning son of Curlin standing in California and he is the halfbrother to six graded stakes performers via the dam Blending Element (IRE). Texas Ryano’s frst crop are now four-year-olds of 2023. His frst winner, Peppermint Flirt, won a maiden special weight as a two-year-old at Del Mar at the distance of one mile on the turf. His three-year-olds have won on grass, synthetic and dirt and from 5 ½ furlongs to a mile.
Arroyo Vista Farm is situated on 40 acres of irrigated pastures and grass paddocks for mares, weanlings, and yearlings. Our front paddocks are fenced with a combination of white vinyl posts and rails with v-mesh for added safety. The larger pastures also have v-mesh horse fencing. Currently there are two barns, an 8-stall foaling barn and a four-stall stallion barn. Additional facilities include a new covered and climate controlled Eurociser and new sand pens for layups. We are located just east of Escondido in Valley Center, a 45-minute drive to Del Mar and less than 30 minutes from San Luis Rey Downs. Santa Anita and Los Alamitos are also just 90 minutes away. Arroyo Vista Farm is managed by Miguel Jimenez, who previously managed Ballena Vista Farm for many years. Miguel was mentored by Valley Creek Farm manager Leigh Ann Howard, and now leads a staff with a combined 80 years of experience in the thoroughbred industry. Dr. William Talbot is Arroyo Vista Farm’s attending veterinarian who also has many years of experience as a respected equine practitioner. Arroyo Vista Farm is owned and operated by Henry and Robin Williamson, longtime thoroughbred owners and breeders, who race their horses under Williamson Racing LLC. Henry has been around horses his entire life, and frst experienced the winners circle at Del Mar back in 1972 when his father, Warren Williamson, won his frst race at the seaside oval. B
arton Thoroughbreds has been operating for over six years, after opening its gates for business in August 2017. The farm is situated in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, just thirty minutes from Santa Barbara and two and a half hours from Santa Anita Park. The near two hundred acres in a moderate climate provide the ideal space for boarding and raising thoroughbreds in California.
Dads Caps offers the speed influence in the roster, as the son of Discreet Cat won or placed in 10 graded sprint stakes and won the GI Carter Handicap twice in New York, retiring with earnings of $1.1 million. He sired Kangaroo Court, who won a Cal-Bred Maiden Special Weight at Del Mar by over 14 lengths, won the Echo Eddie Stakes, and also won an AOC at Santa Anita with an E-number of 107. Other notable runners include Grade 3-placed Doris Mae, as well as Organic who won two races in a row at Santa Anita and Del Mar respectively.
Barton Thoroughbreds is led by farm manager Kevin Dickson. Kevin was the manager of Vessels Stallion Farm for twenty-one years until assuming the role of farm manager for Ocean Breeze Ranch for two years. Kevin’s experience, along with education from Colorado State University studying Equine Science with an emphasis in reproduction, proves to be an asset in the development of Barton Thoroughbreds as the premier farm in California. Barton Thoroughbreds offers boarding, breeding, foaling, sales prep, and lay-up care. The lay-up side is led by an experienced horseman from Santa Anita Park who has over twenty-five years of experience in caring for thoroughbreds in training. The forty-five stall barn on the lay-up side is equipped with an EquiVibe stall used for rehabilitating horses. The farm has also invested in a state-of-the-art eurocizer and sand paddocks to aid in recovery. The most recent investment has been an aqua treadmill to even further the rehab effectiveness for these thoroughbreds. Multiple grass paddocks allow for quality turn-out time for your thoroughbreds as well.
One Bad Boy had his first promising crop of foals in 2023. He is a multiple black-type winning son of Twirling Candy, whose victories include the prestigious Queen’s Plate Stakes at Woodbine in 2019. Tap Back’s first foals have also arrived in 2023 and are very impressive with their conformation and physique. Tap Back is a son of Einsten (BRZ) out of a Tapit mare and was an extremely precocious two-year-old, breaking his maiden at Del Mar in a Maiden Special Weight and winning the Golden State Juvenile Stakes (Black Type).
Aside from offering unparalleled care for lay-ups, Barton Thoroughbreds is pleased to stand the following stallions: Cat Burglar, Dads Caps, One Bad Boy, Tap Back, and our newest addition Shaaz.
Shaaz will be standing his first year at stud in 2024, and Barton Thoroughbreds is delighted to introduce the son of Uncle Mo out of a Graded Stakes producing Mineshaft mare. He was a $1.1 million dollar two-year-old purchase and had a brilliant career at the track before his racing career ended, winning his first three starts and defeating current Graded Stakes winner Hopkins.
Cat Burglar is a Baffert-trained multiple graded-placed, black-type winner by Unbridled’s Song out of a strong female family who stood his sixth year in 2023. Recently, Cat Burglar sired Catmansue, who was a $100,000 two-year-old and Maiden Special Weight Winner at Del Mar in 2023.
The team at Barton Thoroughbreds is committed to investing in the quality of care of thoroughbreds in the state of California and helping clients breed and raise their next champion Cal-Bred. Visitors are invited to tour the farm, see the stallions, and meet the management.

The farm offers a long-established water treadmill for swimming and hydrotherapy, with experienced staff that know how to carefully introduce horses in rehabilitation. A brand new EquiVibe was installed early in 2019. The natural vibration plate helps stimulate horses with whole body vertical vibration, which promotes health and healing. The EquiVibe can also be used as preventative care. Bob Mitchell, a native of California, was always involved in the horse industry. He moved to Midway City where he began showing and riding, including Quarter
Horses. In 1957, he began training at Los Alamitos, where he conditioned Champion Vandy’s Flash. He switched to Thoroughbreds in 1965 and enjoyed success with stakes winners such as Orbit Ruler and Bahia Key. Carol, a Colorado native, has been on board for close to 35 years. Farm manager Alfredo Limon first started working for Bob Mitchell in 1968, and has been involved in the farm since 1972. DAEHLING RANCH By Justin & Julia Oldfeld, 2nd Generation Owner Operators of Daehling Ranch second-generation owner-operators, Julia and I are A sproud to continue to provide Daehling Ranch as one
Northern California’s premier thoroughbred farms.
2023 has not fell short of providing its share of challenges. The announcement that Golden Gate Fields would close at the end of 2023 left signifcant certainty for the future of racing in Northern California. However, myself, and other leaders at CTBA, spent a signifcant amount of time over the past few months working to negotiate a deal that would ensure Golden Gate Fields would remain open in the short term and provide a pathway for racing in the North to be sustained under a new model that includes cooperation and collaboration with our partner fair tracks in the long term. We still have many challenges ahead that will require hard work, compromise and developing new partnerships. That said, Julia and I are excited to help be a part of the team that will fnd and execute those solutions in the future to ensure we keep breeding and racing robust across the entire state; north and south.
the horses we start and prepare for the race track; with the focus on meeting the needs of both our owners and trainers. We welcome horses from Northern and Southern California, regardless of where they plan to race after they leave the farm. We are also committed to open, honest and transparent communication. As we all know, the horse business has its ups and downs, however we will always remain open and transparent about the progress of your horses. We understand trust is the bedrock of a farm-client relationship. Julia and I have also worked hard to help support and expand the number of well-bred stallions available in Northern California. First and foremost, credit and thanks must be given to all our stallion owners who are working hard to support and back their equine partners with quality mares.
Even with the challenges we have faced in 2023, we continue to take every opportunity to improve our operation and position Daehling Ranch to better serve thoroughbred breeders and owners in California. This includes upgrading our facility and the farm’s infrastructure each year. We are in this for the long haul and there is much to be optimistic about. Anyone visiting the farm will also immediately recognize the hundreds of acres of lush irrigated pasture. These pastures serve as the backbone of our farm and certainly stand out as unique in the industry. We work to provide a setting that allows, well a horse to be a horse, and grow in an environment that will better prepare them for their career on the track. In short, this a good place to raise a horse. We are blessed to be located along the Consumnes River which provides a sustainable source of groundwater to irrigate our pastures, even in the face of drought. All horses are supplemented with a grain ration developed by an equine nutritionist to ensure proper nutrients, protein and probiotics are received on a daily. Because we are blessed with the ability to keep horses on lush irrigated pasture during the spring, summer and fall, we are also able to better manage our feed costs to keep our rates lower than average. Lower rates do not translate to a reduced level of care or nutrition, but rather refects our desire for our customers to succeed fnancially. We depend on you and you depend on California thoroughbred farms to raise your next winner. In addition to breeding and boarding, we are also one of few farms that offer starting and training. Our facility includes an all-weather 3/8-mile track, covered round pen, eurociser and most importantly dedicated training staff that have been with our operation for years. We work to ensure stability and consistency for

The horse division represents just one area of the larger Harris Ranch operation, which also operates the acclaimed Harris Ranch Restaurant and Inn; until recent sale, the Harris Feeding Company. California’s largest cattle feed yard and Harris Ranch Beef Company, a pioneer in branded beef. Harris Farms Farming Division founded in 1937 on then barren land 50 miles Southwest of Fresno, in the middle of California,
initially focused on growing cotton and grains, but now contains thousands of acres planted in almonds, pistachios, vegetables, wines grapes, and citrus in three locations. Currently, Harris Farms’ horse division includes the 350acre main farm located north of Coalinga, just east of I-5, as well as the 200-acre part of the 6000 acre Harris River Ranch near Sanger devoted to horses. The main farm boasts a full commercial facility, offering a wide range of services from breeding and foaling to conditioning and training on the farm’s 7 furlong training track for Harris Farms and its many loyal clients.
The pastoral Harris River Ranch is located 65 miles northeast of the main farm on the majestic Kings River. The rich, sandy loam soil and underlying limestone work with ideal water conditions to nourish 240 acres of large, expansive pastures conducive to the proper growth and development of weanlings and yearlings. Cared for by River Ranch manager Laurie Brown. Young horses are well prepared for the challenges of the racetrack or the sales ring. President and owner John Harris entrusts his horse division to a loyal and committed group of hard-working employees. The Harris team is led by General Manager Jonny Hilvers, a 4th generation horseman with roots back to the Old English Rancho which had dominated California racing and breeding for decades; and long-time farm trainer Per Antonsen. Other key members include resident vetenarian Dr. Courtney Stammerjohan, Dr. Virginia Castilla Hernandez, stallion manager Raul Rosas and the courteous administration staffs Frankie Jo Perez and Mayra Worth . LEGACY RANCH
The Jewel of the Foothills over 145 acres in Clements, Calif., is Legacy S prawling Ranch. With three decades of experience in both the
Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse industries, Pete and Evelyn Parrella’s outstanding breeding and training facility offers anything your horse might need on its road to success. In addition to the main barns, there is a five-furlong training track maintained by state-of-the-art equipment. Legacy Ranch’s longtime trainer Terry Knight lives on the property with wife and office manager Dru. They are joined by 35 other employees and maintenance supervisor Trent Newhall. Legacy Ranch will be standing three impressive stallions on its roster for 2024: Clubhouse Ride, Straight Fire, and Mr. Big. Clubhouse Ride, who is owned by Six-S Racing, and Craig and Larry Lewis, quickly became one of the stallions to watch in California. The three-time stakes winner won just five of 43 starts but finished top three in 24 races with earnings of $1.3 million. He took consecutive editions of the Grade 2 Californian Stakes as an older horse and was also juvenile stakes winner in 2010. Clubhouse Ride was multiple Grade 1-placed in a career that spanned six racing seasons. As a sire, Clubhouse Ride has been remarkably versatile on all surfaces. The son of Candy Ride was second among all California sires in Cal-bred progeny earnings in 2022 while leading the state in number of stakes wins with nine. Clubhouse Ride’s daughter Warren’s Showtime was a seven-time stakes winner, scoring in the Grade 3 Wilshire and the Grade 3 Autumn Miss. She placed in the prestigious Del Mar Oaks (G1) in 2020 and earned $843,431 in her career. Brickyard Ride is known as one of the fastest horses in California, taking the $200,000 San Carlos (G2), the $150,000 California Cup Sprint, and $100,000 Thor’s Echo all in 2021! More recently, he won back-to-back editions of the Kona Gold Stakes (G3) at Del Mar in 2022-23.
Other top runners are Warren’s Candy Girl, winner of the Solana Beach at Del Mar last year and Osunitas at the seaside oval in July; Chismosa, who won the CTBA Stakes at Del Mar last year and placed in the Great Lady M (G2) and two other stakes in 2023; and Club Aspen, who won the King Glorious at Los Alamitos in 2019 and was stakes placed on dirt and turf in 2020. Straight Fire was added to the Legacy Ranch roster in 2018. The son of Dominus is out of the winning A.P. Indy mare Tricky Indy, a half-sister to dual grade 3 winner Confide. Straight Fire broke his maiden at Del Mar, then finished second in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and third in the Frontrunner Stakes (G1). He earned $146,400 in just four starts. His notable offspring include Smuggler’s Run, Straight Up G, and Power Surge who are all Sstakes winners. Lovacres Ranch is a full-service facility including breeding, breaking and training of horses. Located at the mouth of Temecula Creek in a valley at the base of Palomar Mountain about 10 miles northwest of Warner Springs. The ranch sits on beautiful countryside at an elevation of 3,500 feet. Between 50 and 100 foals are born at Lovacres Ranch every year. Being primarily a commercial breeder, Lovingier sells most of the horses he breeds but has raced many of his homebreds in small partnership. The babies get their early schooling on Lovacres’ six-furlong training track.
My Fiona, Finneus was especially partial to Del Mar during his racing career, winning the Golden State Juvenile Stakes in 2021 prior to finishing second in both the Best Pal (G2) and the Futurity. Stay Thirsty’s successor-in-waiting could be the exciting sophomore stallion Smokem. The son of Union Rags ranked number one as California’s initial-crop sire in 2022
Lovacres will stand four stallions for the coming breeding season, including the newly-retired Finneus, a homebred son of Stay Thirsty. The star of the show at Lovacres is Stay Thirsty. The son of Bernardini was California’s leading sire in four of the last five years, according to BloodHorse, and is among the leaders in 2023 as of midSeptember, with progeny earnings of more than $3.1 million. The homebred 3-year-old stakes winner Bus Buzz, with three wins and two seconds from six starts so far, is Stay Thirsty’s leading earner in 2023. The dark bay gelding took the Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar in August to boost his seasonal total to $222,650 to date. Two other Lovingier homebreds by Stay Thirsty, Thirsty John and Tapito Leo, have also excelled in 2023. Stay Thirsty also is the sire of 2022 Cigar Mile winner and multiple grade stakes victor Mind Control, a lifetime earner of more than $2 million, and Godolphin Mile winner Coal Front, who banked more than $1.8 million. Stay Thirsty’s progeny purse earnings in 2022 exceeded $5 million and his 10 crops of racing age have earned nearly $32 million. A Grade I winner as a 2-year-old, Stay Thirsty has passed along his precocity with eight 2-year-old stakes winners. In 2021, Stay Thirsty’s first crop in California, he led in Cal-bred
with earnings of $371,736 from a modest total of 23 foals. His second crop currently ranks fourth among California sires. Govenor Charlie, sire of back-to-back stakes winner Governor Goteven, went to the breeding shed shortly after winning the $800,000 Grade Ill Sunland Derby, when he set a track record of 1 :47 1 /5 for the 1 1 /8 miles. We have several options for care and stall rest, 24x24-foot paddocks and 100x100-foot paddocks for horses recovering from injury or just needing a little rest time. We have improved the areas for pre-foaling mares and added a lightcontrolled area for cycling open mares. The foaling stalls are 16x20 feet, monitored around the clock, and disinfected after each foaling. Milky Way Farm, Agent has become a special project for us. ef Ganje learned his winning moves early in life. How many other horse breeders can say they had the iconic hip-hop star MC Hammer’s backup dancers practicing their choreography in his living room? Bet U can’t touch that. True story: While Ganje was attending Cal State Hayward, where he played football and ran track in the early 1990s, his teammate and roommate Alonzo Carter was part of the Hammer dance troupe that used their place to practice. Ganje was caught up in the excitement as well, tagging along with Hammer—who enjoyed success in racing for a time with his Oaktown Stable—throughout the rapper’s “U Can’t Touch Tis” tour. Ganje even entertained the thought of a musical career
himself, rapping on a demo recording for Hammer before abandoning the idea. “I didn’t really have the talent,” he says. Tese days, the fast footwork that Ganje appreciates most are from the horses he owns, like the recent graded stakes winner Shotgun Hottie and the 2-year-old California-bred juvenile Lord Prancealot, winner of Del Mar’s Graduation Stakes in August. His favorite “hammer time” nowadays comes from the horse auctioneer’s podium. It has been a long journey in racing for Ganje. After getting into horse ownership in the mid-1990s, he left the sport for several years, then returned with success after making the decision in early 2019 to devote himself full time to the game he loves. Ganje purchased the Kentucky-bred daughter of Gun Runner for $45,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company spring sale of 2-year-olds in 2021, and the bay flly has earned more than $770,000 to date. Shotgun Hottie is currently turned out in anticipation of a 2024 campaign that is expected to begin with the Azeri Stakes (G2) and Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at Oaklawn Park this spring. Ganje, who has ambitious hopes for her, calls Shotgun Hottie “my retirement plan, or more like my ‘get-backsome-of-my money’ plan,” he jokes. Gun Runner also fgured prominently in Ganje’s best sale so far. He purchased California-bred Super Patriot, a graded stakes-placed daughter of Unusual Heat, for $60,000 at the Keeneland November 2020 breeding stock sale. A year later, he sold the then 6-year-old mare in foal to the red-hot sire at the same sale for $300,000 through Checkmate Toroughbreds. “Timing was everything,” Ganje said. “I’m going to be honest with you, (the results) don’t usually work out like that. I mean, you can do all the work, do all the studying, that you can. But at the end of the day, sometimes it’s just about being lucky.” He’s also excited by the potential of his homebred Lord Prancealot, a California colt by the Irish-bred Sir Prancealot out of a French-bred

orses sometimes experience mouth or tongue injuries— anything from punctures due to sharp foreign objects to an accident with a bit or tooth problems.
“Tere may be some bleeding,” said Melinda Freckleton, DVM, a veterinarian with Firestar Veterinary Services in Virginia. “It often looks like there’s more blood than there really is because it’s mixed with saliva. Te horse also drools www.ctba.com
even more because of the taste of blood in his mouth. Some try to spit it out rather than swallow it. “Some mouth injuries are hidden and can fool us. We may do a colic exam or try to discover why a horse is mildly uncomfortable or isn’t eating. Te mouth injury may not be discovered until the second or third examination of the horse—after more common problems have been ruled out.” Signs may be as subtle as the horse not eating, or he doesn’t quite seem right or
is vaguely uncomfortable. Tese symptoms could also mimic a low-grade colic. If the horse has blood oozing or fowing from the mouth, you can part the horse’s lips and look into the mouth to try to see where the blood is coming from. “Many people don’t realize how long and deep the mouth is; the teeth go back almost as far as the horse’s eye,” said Freckleton. “Tere is no way you can get a good look at the whole mouth from the front without sedation and a speculum. “But you can certainly look at the incisors to see if they’ve sufered trauma, or trauma to the lips. A horse may have fallen and landed on his nose, resulting in a split lip or chipped tooth. Young colts or geldings love to play mouth games with each other, and this may result in injuries—anything from splitting a lip to fracturing a tooth.” A small lip injury usually doesn’t need treatment, but suturing might enable it to heal faster or more cosmetically. Tongue injuries are fairly common. “Tere are many ways these can happen, including rough use
of a bit, or tying the horse with the reins and the horse pulling back,” Freckleton said. A horse wandering loose with a bridle, dragging the reins, may step on a rein and jerk his head up, cutting the tongue with the bit. “Occasionally, a trainer lets a young horse wear the bit for a while in the stall, to get used to the feel of a bit,” Freckleton said. “If the horse snags the bit on something, this could cause severe injury.” Horses can also impale objects inside the mouth. “Even though horses are very good at sorting out foreign material in their food, leaving behind sticks or tiny bits of glass or metal, once in a while they fail,” Freckleton said. “Ten we end up pulling splinters or chunks of metal out of the tongue—sometimes far back in the mouth.” She had to send one horse to a referral hospital because the tongue was swollen. “We suspected something was in it, but searched and searched on physical exam and couldn’t fnd it,” she Many people said. “A small sliver of metal don’t realize how was discovered, using x-ray, then the horse had to be put long and deep under general anesthetic to the mouth is; retrieve it.” the teeth go back Young horses often try to eat or chew strange things. almost as far as the “A barn manager told me horse’s eye.” a story about a farm where —Dr. Melinda she used to work where evFreckleton eryone wore walkie-talkies,” said Freckleton. “Someone’s walkie-talkie had fallen of in the stall of a young colt, and he’d wedged it between his teeth. Tey had to have the horse sedated and use a tool to pry it out of his mouth. No harm was done, but the horse was very distressed.” Foals are notorious for chewing on everything and anything, and occasionally sufer mouth injuries. “We’ve seen them with sticks or other things wedged between their teeth in an awkward, uncomfortable position, or wedged and jabbed into the tongue, or wedged against the roof of the mouth,” Freckleton said. “Usually, you know there is something wrong because the horse is making mouth faces and trying to dislodge the object. If he looks like he’s trying to spit something out and can’t, the veterinarian can look into the mouth. “Some lacerations need to be seen as quickly as possible, to try to suture them. Tey can be difcult to suture, however, and the attempt at repair may fall apart. It’s challenging, for instance, to suture the tongue. You can’t immobilize it, like you’d try to immobilize other areas of the body that are sutured. “Mouth tissues are constantly bathed in saliva, which also tends to break down sutures. Te motion of the tongue itself may undo the suture knots. We try to suture a cut tongue, and there are many successes. But there are also failures.” Occasionally, a horse has bitten of part of the tongue completely. www.ctba.com

might get lacerated or bitten. “A fractured jaw can be difcult to heal. If the fracture is displaced, it usually needs surgical repair. Te jaw is good at healing if it’s not displaced. It’s just a question of time and patience and feeding a soft diet that doesn’t need much grinding.” Another type of problem is a sinus infection, resulting in a one-sided nasal discharge. “Owners don’t always recognize this as a tooth problem,” Freckleton said. “But especially in an older horse, this should be your frst suspicion. People tend to ignore a runny nose and may not think to call a veterinarian until the discharge smells really bad.” Veterinarians generally sedate the horse to look inside the mouth. “If there’s trauma that has damaged the jaw, this makes it safer for us to use a speculum to examine the horse,” Freckleton said. “Ten the horse isn’t putting as much muscular tension against what we are doing. A mouth speculum can be a dangerous weapon on the end of the horse’s head if he is moving his head around. You want him to stay very still, for safety reasons. “We’ll be going into his mouth and may be poking things into the tissues, so you don’t want the horse tossing his head. Tis is when people get concussions or a broken arm. When my arm is up in there feeling around, I don’t want that horse moving. I can’t put the horse back together if I’m carted away in an ambulance! A speculum and sedation are part of standard care, for even a routine examination of the mouth. “Te great thing about the mouth is that it has an excellent blood supply and has a tendency to heal really well. But it is important to deal with most problems quickly because the downside is that things may heal in the wrong place and the horse may become disfgured if you don’t sew something up quickly—if it can be sutured. Your window of opportunity may be shorter than in some other parts of the body just because healing is more aggressive in the mouth. If the horse might need sutures, you should have that horse examined sooner rather than later.”
Mouth injuries are another reason horses need regular dental examinations

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Earnings are from all available Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan and Hong Kong. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2022 was $30,508 or 73% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 73% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 17%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through September 24, 2023.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Sires that are dead, pensioned, or no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old. Statistics are from all available Northern Hemisphere racing with earnings adjusted for Hong Kong and Japan. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
