KUNSTENCAMPUS ASSE
design: OSK-AR architecten icw FELT architecture & design personal input: competition renders: MAKE ME
In the center of Asse, next to a monument and close-by the Culture Center a new Art Campus for the city will be built. It is a collection of functions and users that will live together under the same roof without losing their identity. The interaction with the city dweller is encouraged by the permeability of the ground floor. The inner court facade expresses the nature of the school and also creates a calm background, letting the monument shine. The city facade responds in scale, openings and material to its surroundings.

KA ETTERBEEK BRUSSELS
design: OSK-AR architecten personal input: technical project renders: CLAAR
On a green island in the city the new school building finds its ideal place between the existing buildings and protected trees without disturbing the park character of the site. The new school adapts and responds to its surroundings by enveloping the existing sports hall and by breaking the scale by various cut-outs. It implants itself subtly and supports the existing buildings. The atrium is the active core of the new building. A meeting and a lesson giving place which visually and phisically connects the ground floor with the first floor and the terrace.

SCHOOL FABIOLALAAN GENT
design: OSK-AR architecten icw Jan de Nul personal input: competition renders: CLAAR
On a site along the train tracks and the Koningin Fabiolalaan a new school takes shape. A vast program has to fit in a compact building on a small plot. The building helps make the connection between two different levels: the street and the promenade along the train tracks. The new school responds to its program by adopting an “L” shape. This creates a representative image for the Stadsgebouw and also an outdoor playing space which spans on two levels, protected from the street. Together with the square it becomes a landmark building along the Fabiolalaan.

FAÇADE REHABILITATION OF AN APARTMENT BUILDING BRUSSELS
: FC&B icw Barbara Van Der Wee Architects personal input: preliminary project, concept, building permit project, technical project, details
Located in the center of Brussels in the imediate proximity of the Palace of Justice this apartment block, although not a monument but included in a protected area, has to be subjected to a serious overhaul. A survey has carefully been made and all of the degradations were inventoried. This included also all of the windows which had to be measured and drawn in detail in order to be able to apply for government grants.

The new addition to a site with a historic monument maintains the privacy of the villa’s garden and complements it as a sober background of a garden pavilion. The plan geometry, spatial voids and facade openings negotiate the relation between built mass and the unbuilt space of the garden and also blur the line between inside and outside space.

90 SOCIAL HOUSING UNITS HOMBORCHVELD - UKKEL, BRUSSEL
design: Van Belle & Medina Architects personal input: concept and drawings corner building renders: arch.Joris Bourgeois
The importance of the development of the HOMBORCHVELD project in Uccle lies primarily in the fact that a new vitality: the compacting and development of the landscape in this garden district - can be anticipated in an important way. The different project zones, located in the social garden district “HOMBORCH”, receive a harmonious architectural and landscape injection, taking into account the architectural, topographical and green character of the garden district. The project proposal supports the potential from the location and from this position it seeks to have a valuable meaning in the development of the site. The various interventions respond to the surrounding and neighboring buildings and the public space, always creating an interesting interaction between building and open space. A certain coherence is sought. An image that is at the same time contemporary and timeless, but intuitively comes to belong to the location. The ambition of this project is to form a dialogue between the built and the unbuilt (landscape).

LANDSCAPE
ACCESSIBILITY
The square building acquires a special meaning from its location. The 3-layer volume with set-back responds to the scale of its immediate environment, becomes a revolt for the round point, gives dynamics and is dominant as reflection from its hinge function and cornerstone.
The corner building consists of two parts that form one volumetric configuration. The switching of these volumes is a logical consequence of the urban setting and reduces the complex corner situation to an urban development cornerstone. Two beam-shaped figures in line with the ribbon development of the respective building block simultaneously create an urban façade towards the roundabout. There is also a layered incision until the surrounding buildings. The facade architecture is a classical articulation of base, middle and top with set back.

MASTERPLAN FOR WZC DENDERRUST HERDERSEM, AALST/ BELGIUM
design: Van Belle & Medina Architects personal input: competition concept schemes
renders: arch.Joris Bourgeois
The master plan wants to introduce a number of spatial, landscape “layers” at the concept level that are inherently connected to the location and want to serve as a basis for any new development. The first layer is the spatial layer, it is the layer of collectivity or communality. An active ground level open for initiative and current use. The second layer is that of volume metrics, the “ensemble” image or how the different buildings can work together. The third layer is that of the “surfaces” from geography, from landscape structures. A framework for functions and use.The fourth layer is that of the line structures, infrastructures, the flows through the site. Connecting and / or anchoring a place in its context. These different layers do not want to work autonomously, but through each other. The residents and users of this site experience, use and think differently about this place. Based on everyone’s individuality and / or identity, the place wants to carry a clear multi-functionality.
The master plan supports the potential of the location and, based on this statement, it seeks to have a valuable meaning in its spatial setting. The buildings and infrastructure respond to the green context, creating an interesting interaction between building and landscape.

INTERVENTION IN A HISTORIC SITE NEW BUILDING FOR THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF ARTS BUCHAREST / ROMANIA
tutor: prof.arch. Georgică Mitrache
The proposed building is an articulation where two different types of urban fabric meet: to the north and east big objects which have their own singularity and to the south and west mainly compact housing fabric. The new university building tries to create a dialogue between these opposing scales. The architectural program of the building consists in exhibition spaces of 1000m2, 2 auditoriums for courses, 8 workshops and rooms for auxiliary work, administration offices and a leisure terrace, all organized around a central void in a circular plan. The circular plan introduces a new typology to art schools: although the main circulation takes place around the central void, an inner circulation is provided on the rim of the circle - which introduces the idea of the “continuous workshop” for optimizing the workflow of students. The new building is poured in concrete, as it belongs to the site.

INTERVENTION IN A HISTORIC SITE PROTECTIVE STRUCTURE AND MUSEALIZATION OF ANTIQUE RUINS IN VENICE
SQUARE - ROME / ITALY
personal input: concept, plan drafting and presentation, model-making, photos collab: arch. Cătălina Bulborea tutors: arch.Stefano D’Avino PhD, arch.Riccardo d’Aquino PhD
The protective structure is a canvas with steel space frame, resting on four reinforced concrete tubes placed in the corners of the structure and on a steel beam-footbridge. In the vertical tubes to the street there are placed a lift for the disabled and an escalator linking the level of the sidewalk with the level of Venezia square subway station - line C. The other two tubes are placed towards the square, attached to the curved reinforced concrete diaphragm which closes the excavation, an open entrance staircase and a lift that descend to the level of the ruins. The protective structure of the ruins is also a public space that acts as an amphitheater and which is oriented towards the forum of Trajan. The square of the Madonna of Loreto and also the area between the site and the Generali insurance building become pedestrian areas. The inner surface of the protective structure is finished as a mirror and it reflects distorted views of the ruins to the pedestians that pass by. The walls that enclose the ruins are perforated with small equilateral triangles in key areas to allow views inside from street level. The footbridge is accesed from the ruins level by a steel staircase.
