CALI ZIMMERMAN email: cbz22931@uga.edu I find some of the most inspiring landscapes to be those left mostly untouched or built centuries before the modern advancements of our time. These landscapes are often founded upon principles of community, nature dependency, security and cultural expression; all characteristics I try to incorporate in my designs. Movements towards sustainable design, New Urbanism, or eco-living all strike my interest because they follow this same mindset. I strive to reflect these concepts in my own design approaches by seeking ways of restoring our roots as a part of the natural world rather than in control of it.

Atlanta Blossoms // 2022 A t l a n t a D a i r i e s r e - i m a g i n e d a s c h i l d r e n ’s n a t u r a l p l a y The Atlanta Blossoms site is a design approach taken to re-purpose a depleted brown field site as something of life and public attraction. The original site functions as a small public park in a very urban setting surrounding by various restaurants, retail stores and other attractions. This children play area relies on planting selections to create a sense of excitement and a series of experiences for children and parents alike. Site features include a sensory garden, open play area, interactive artistic elements, and calm secluded spaces for parents. The site seeks to connect people with nature in a playful way through extensive native planting and minimal built elements. Collaborator: Alexa Cruz (UGA BLA ‘25)

Villaggio Dell’ Arte // 2023 A r t i s t h o s t e l r e t r e a t i n t h e Tu s c a n h i l l s i d e The Villaggio Dell’ Arte is an artist retreat located on the edge of beautiful Cortona, Italy as a place to inspire, appreciate and cultivate the creation of art. Its purpose is to rekindle the power of community in the artist culture of the town, something that has been lost over the decades. The newly imagined site adapts to the terraced structure by establishing a series of individual spaces for artists, tourists, and the community to appreciate local art in. Artists can live on site in a long term apartment or a short term hostel provided with studio space, gallery space and accommodating living facilities. Other features include the Art Garden or sculpture walk developed to display artist work for the public.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN
Residential design honors the close knit, intimate nature of smaller scale sites. Detailed elements shine here and create a sense of home for residents.

Sawyer Residence // 2022 A clean and modern backyard planting plan The redesign of the Sawyer residence backyard was prompted by the clients request for a newly imagined clean and modern backyard. Their backyard evolved from a generic open lawn space to a multi-use, sleek yard area. The design is based upon multiple layered geometric shapes to create a series of neatly designed spaces. The planting choices follow suit with this theme, relying on grasses and compacted shrubs all within a mellow range of colors.

Hill Street Residence // 2023 R e s i d e n t i a l h o u s e d e s i g n fo r A D A a c c e s s i b i l i t y The Hill Street residence was based upon creating a house that was accessible and enjoyable for an elderly couple. This meant a strict following of ADA guidelines and maintaining interest in the site for the client. Runoff water is managed through multiple rain gardens within the site and a reliance on plant buffers around impermeable surfaces. Other site amenities include raised garden beds, a fire pit lounge area, an outdoor dining space and covered garage walkway.

COMMUNITY PLANNING
Community planning goes beyond the actual layout of a neighborhood, but rather creating a way of life. Conservation, community, and connectivity are at the forefront of these designs.
05
Moss Side Community // 2023 Eco-friendly community with pocket neighborhood design The Moss Side Community is a neighborhood modeled upon conservation and community. The pocket neighborhood design approach encourages close-knit relationships with neighbors and leaves more land open to natural resources. Shared green spaces, gardens, and recreational areas are also incorporated into the community. The design process included extensive site inventory and analysis . Proper road layout was also evaluated and accurate alignment of the roads were a part of the final design.

Water’s Edge // 2023 A neighborhood designed with community and conservation in mind Water’s Edge celebrates the beauty of this region by creating a sense of community within the natural landscape. The overall design of this community is an interconnected web of self sufficient hamlet neighborhoods close enough in proximity to additional resources. Areas in the site like the town center, the historical downtown, community farm, or schools are strategically placed to accommodate accessibility in a hierarchical order of necessity. Beyond this, the roads, green way and trail systems shift away from the reliance on automobile travel promoting alternative travel methods. Life is simplified for residents though more accessible resources and the natural environment is left as close to its natural state as possible.

ADDITIONAL WO R K S
Aside from master plans and construction sheets, I enjoy artistic design in every context. These works display my exploration of the landscape in new ways.

Additional Works // 2021-2023 S k e t c h e s f r o m l i fe o n v a r i o u s m e d i a s . Sketching from life is an extremely effective way to practice rendering skills and also be immersed in the surrounding environment. It has become one of my favorite pastimes throughout my time as an undergraduate. Understanding the details of a landscape through sketching reflects into my design process as well. Discovering new materials, details, plants or even just how a space is used is impactful on how a new space can be imagined.
