CAMM is a non-profit (501-c-6) organization that represents Master Mariners (licensed by the USCG to command vessels of "any gross tons, or unlimited") -- and vessel/harbor pilots -- who have commanded/piloted vessels over 5,000 GT. CAMM also represents Master Mariners who have "limited licenses" to command smaller vessels of up to 1600 GT (including research/survey vessels, tugs, fishing vessels, OSV craft, tour boats, ferries, etc.). CAMM also represents Associate Members that are regarded as "Maritime Professionals" working ashore in a variety of capacities and positions, including: vessel fleet managers and ship agents, marine surveyors, port authority staff, marine terminal & stevedore contractors, and members of maritime-related government agencies (USCG, NOAA, USACE, USN, MARAD, and others). CAMM's Associate Members also include licensed mates (and even a few licensed marine engineers) who are still active in the U.S. Merchant Marine. And CAMM also invites the midshipmen and cadets at the state and federal maritime academies to become "student members" of the organization (and they are eligible to become Associate Members after they graduate; and ultimately can achieve "Regular Member status" after they raise their licenses to Master Mariner, and take command of their first vessel). NOAA operates a wide assortment of Hydrographic Survey, Oceanographic Research, and Fisheries Research vessels. These vessels are operated by NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations. Ships located in the Pacific are managed by the Marine Operations Center, Pacific (MOP) in Newport, OR. Ships located in the Atlantic are managed by the Marine Operations Center, Atlantic (MOA) in Norfolk, VA. Logistic support for the vessels are provided by the appropriate marine operations centers or Port Captains, for vessels in Woods Hole, MA; Charleston, SC; Newcastle, NH; Davisville, RI; Pascagoula, MS; Ketchikan, AK; Kodiak, AK; San Diego, CA; and Honolulu, HI. The ships are run by a combination of NOAA Commissioned Officers and Wage Marine civilians. The Wage Marine personnel include licensed masters, mate, and engineers, and unlicensed members of the 20 | P a g e
engine, steward, and deck departments. In addition, survey and electronic technicians operate and/or maintain the ship's mission, communication and navigation equipment. The ship's officers and crew provide mission support and assistance to embarked scientist from various NOAA laboratories as well as the academic community. Today, NOAA is the largest operator of Federal research vessels. NOAA offers a diversified fleet, which involves a variety of missions and offer job security, good pay, and the benefits of being a civil service employee. NOAA vessels spend approximately 150-200 days at sea over the course of the year, some vessels may be more and some may be less during the sailing year. This will all depend on budget and program needs.
