Keynote Speaker Captain Deborah Dempsey Author, The Captain’s a Woman
Captain Deborah Dempsey has salt water in her veins and is definitely more comfortable afloat than ashore. She was among the first women to attend and graduate from a state maritime academy. A 1976 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, she was one of the first women to serve as Commanding Officer of a cargo ship on international waters. She writes about her experiences working in a traditionally male environment in her book The Captain's a Woman, which she cowrote with Joanne Foster. Debbie comes from community sailing programs on the mouth of the Connecticut River. She is a lifelong professional mariner whose nontraditional career has been documented in film, books, and in numerous articles. Debbie has also received numerous awards. She now works as a pilot on the notorious Columbia River Bar. Her passion lies in helping at the Community Boating Center, a non-profit she helped found in 2006 in Bellingham, Washington.

Speaker Cecilia Ramirez-Ruiz Big Brother Big Sister Cecilia Ramirez-Ruiz grew up in San Francisco’s Mission District, an impoverished immigrant community where she attended the local schools. She struggled daily as a young Latina trying to reach her goals, while gangs and violence surrounded her neighborhood. A local priest from her church saw potential in Cecilia and helped sponsor her to attend a Catholic school, with the agreement that she would dedicate herself to volunteering in the community and the church. Cecilia always enjoyed helping others and began working with the Food Bank, Youth Leadership Institute, a young women’s program, and then became interested in student council, where she was elected to be President of the school. However, during this time of triumph in her life she noticed her peers being sucked into gangs and drugs. It seemed childhood friends were dying left and right. This left her in a difficult situation because she didn’t want to leave her childhood friends behind, but she also wanted to succeed and leave the neighborhood one day. While gangs pulled her closer, a teacher at school drew her attention with a mentoring program that would help her leave the Mission and attend college. While the Mission was home to her she yearned to explore the world and see what it had to offer. The mentoring program was so successful that she not only gained admittance into a university, but a full scholarship to an Ivy League college in upstate New York. She was able to travel the world and live in Thailand as an English teacher, sail to Canada and build igloos in Vancouver, climb icy mountains in Washington, live with local homeless youth in Hawaii, and then return to the Mission and paint murals depicting those inspiring moments. Cecilia graduated college with a BA in Social Work. She has gone on to work in addiction clinics, rehab centers, homeless shelters, HIV centers, advocacy groups, and now she has come to Big Brother Big Sisters to share her knowledge about both social services and mentoring. 6 of 17
