JOE
CALLERO Head Coach • Third Season • Central Washington, 1986 166-164 (12 Seasons) • 27-34 (Cal Poly) fter helping to produce one of the most significant seasons in the history of the Cal Poly men’s basketball program, Joe Callero returns for his third year as head coach of the Mustangs this fall. Selected to finish fifth in the Big West, the 2010-11 Mustangs instead matched single-season program records for highest showing in the Big West standings (second), highest seeding for the conference tournament (second) and total Big West victories (10). One of the top defensive teams in Division I last season, Cal Poly – out of 335 programs – ranked third nationally in opponent three-point percentage (28.7), sixth in opponent scoring average (58.9 points per game) and 25th in opponent field goal defense (40.0 percent). The Mustangs also ranked 42nd nationally by committing just 11.9 turnovers per game. Under Callero’s direction last year, guard Shawn Lewis
A
earned All-Big West first team praise and finished as the seventh-leading scorer in Mustang program history with 1,265 career points. Additionally, forward David Hanson was named to the all-conference second team while guard Maliik Love earned Big West Co-Freshman Player of the Year praise. Callero’s initial 2009-10 season at Cal Poly yielded one of the top single-year turnarounds in program history. In orchestrating a five-win improvement over the previous season, Callero also directed the Mustangs to a 5-2 start in Big West play – the program’s best beginning to any conference schedule at the Division I level. Predicted to finish last in the standings, Cal Poly eventually clinched the No. 6 seed for the Big West Tournament and capped the campaign by winning the program’s first conference tournament game in three seasons – a 73-69 opening-round triumph versus UC Irvine. Individually, guard Lorenzo Keeler became the first Mustang in three sea-
sons to earn All-Big West first team praise. Hanson earned allconference honorable mention consideration while guard Kyle Odister was selected to the Big West All-Freshmen Team. Named head coach of Cal Poly on April 3, 2009, Callero owns a penchant for revitalizing college basketball programs. As head coach at Seattle (2001-09), Callero guided the Redhawks to 75 victories during his final four seasons and successfully directed the program through its transition to the Division I level. Callero’s final 2008-09 season with the Redhawks produced a 21-8 campaign and the program’s highest winning percentage in 45 seasons. Additionally, the 2008-09 Redhawks – as an independent program – finished No. 131 out of 347 programs in the final Sagarin Ratings. Under Callero, Seattle finished the 2006-07 season with a 20-9 record, a Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and the program’s first berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 38 years. During just his second
season at Seattle, Callero directed the Redhawks to a 16-11 finish that was the program’s first winning campaign in nine seasons and a 10-victory improvement upon the previous year. Prior to his tenure at Seattle, Callero guided Division III University of Puget Sound to a combined 22-25 record during the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons. The Loggers finished 1410 during his final season to secure the program’s first winning campaign in nine years. Before pointing the Puget Sound program in a winning direction, Callero served the 1998-99 season as an assistant coach at USC. During his one season, Callero assisted the Trojans to a National Invitational Tournament appearance. A prominent figure on the northwest basketball scene for more than two decades, Callero compiled a 130-49 mark during two three-season stints at Highline Community College (1989-92, 1995-98) and, before departing for USC, helped guide the Thunderbirds to successive
Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships. Callero twice earned conference Coach of the Year praise after Highline posted a combined 63-2 mark during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 campaigns. Callero coached Brian Scalabrine while at Highline and recruited the current Chicago Bulls forward to USC. Between his successful stints at Highline, Callero served as the head coach and as a guidance counselor at Sumner HS (199295). Under Callero, Sumner also posted its first winning campaign in six years. A 1986 graduate of Central Washington with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Callero helped guide the Wildcats to consecutive NAIA National Championship appearances during each of his two seasons. The point guard and captain of Central Washington’s 1985-86 team received his master’s degree in education from Seattle in 1991. One of 16 children, Callero is a graduate of Enumclaw HS.
OMAR
LOWERY Assistant Coach • Third Season • Concordia (WI), 2004
mar Lowery, Cal Poly’s recruiting coordinator, is in his third season as an assistant with the Mustang men’s basketball program. Lowery also plays an integral role in strengthening Cal Poly’s post play and rebounding efforts, in addition to scouting of opponents and game-day preparation. “Omar is one of the most well-respected and connected recruiters in Texas, Illinois,
O
Minnesota and Wisconsin,” Mustang head coach Joe Callero said. “His ability to identify quality student-athletes has opened new doors for the Cal Poly basketball program.” A Wisconsin native, Lowery arrived on the central coast following three seasons at Texas State (2006-09) where he helped recruit seven total players ranked among the top-40 Texas high school prospects. As a result of his recruiting efforts, Texas State increased its win total each season with Lowery on the bench. In addition to assisting Texas State achieve success on the
court, Lowery was instrumental in the program’s success in the classroom, helping to mentor 2009 Capital One/Southland Conference all-academic selections John Rybak (Milwaukee native) and Ryan White (Houston). Prior to his tenure with Texas State, Lowery was a graduate assistant coach at Division II Eastern New Mexico University (2004-06). During his tenure at Eastern New Mexico, Lowery recruited and coached 2005 Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year Josh Jackson (6-1, guard, Madison West HS, Madison, Wisc.) and

2006 All-Lone Star second team selection Justin RedmanTrotter (6-3, guard, MarquetteMilwaukee HS). As well as serving as a physical education faculty member at the university, Lowery’s duties with the Greyhound program included on-court coaching, recruiting and the scouting of opponents. His international contacts as well as attention to detail in all areas make him a key part of our staff.” During his four-year tenure at Seattle, Freeman helped
the Redhawks to 75 victories and the program to a successful transition to the Division I level. During Freeman’s final 2008-09 campaign, the Redhawks posted a 21-8 record that translated to the program’s highest single-season winning percentage in 45 seasons. Freeman began his coaching career during the 2004-05 season as the varsity boy’s assistant at MarysvillePilchuck HS (Marysville, Wash.). During his one season, Freeman helped the pro-
gram reach the Washington state district playoffs. His overall duties with the program included the improvement of guard play, coordinating off-season conditioning sessions, scouting the opposition and video editing. A 2004 graduate of Washington State with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and an emphasis in health and fitness education, Freeman served as a student assistant with the Cougar program (1999-04). Under Dick Bennett, Freeman assisted with video exchange
