CONDON Seventh Season • Iowa State, 1991 189-114 Overall • 82-38 Big West Conference
2005, 2007, 2009 Big West Conference Coach of the Year The engineer behind the Cal Poly softball program’s emergence as annual contenders for the Big West championship is seventh-year head coach Jenny Condon, whose .624 (189114) winning percentage at the Mustang helm entering the 2011 campaign ranks first among current conference head coaches. Condon, who directed Cal Poly to Big West titles in 2007 and 2009, also ranks second among conference head coaches with a .707 (82-38) winning percentage in Big West contests. Under Condon, the 2005, 2007 and 2009 Big West Coach of the Year selection, Cal Poly has suffered just one losing season. Despite the program’s 23-24 overall finish in 2010, Cal Poly’s 12-9 Big West mark kept the Mustangs within the top-three programs in the conference standings for the sixth-successive season. Led by designated player Anna Cahn’s selection as Big West Field Player of the Year, five Mustangs earned all-conference praise in 2010. The 2009 season proved to be the finest effort in Cal Poly’s 17-year Division I tenure as the Mustangs established single-season program records for overall winning percentage (.774), conference winning percentage (.857), conference victories (18), fewest conference defeats (three) and fewest overall defeats (12) en route to capturing a second Big West title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs, who made program history by rising as high as No. 21 in the USA Today/NFCA poll, produced their first NCAA Tournament victories at the Division I level and reached the championship round of the Stanford sub-regional. Behind Cahn’s Big West Pitcher of the Year honor, a program-record nine Mustangs garnered all-conference praise. Setting the table for an historic 2009 campaign was a solid 2008 effort as the Mustangs finished 24-22 overall and in third place in the Big West standings with a 12-9 mark. In between opening the season with a 5-1 victory against eventual Women’s College World Series runner-up Texas A&M and winning six of their final eight contests, Cal Poly posted eight
victories against programs that qualified for the previous season’s NCAA Tournament and defended Bob Janssen Field with a 14-3 (.824) home mark. All-Big West first team selection Melissa Pura headlined a group of seven total Mustangs who garnered all-conference praise. Prior to the 2009 campaign, Cal Poly’s 2007 season ranked as the most-notable year in program history. Aside from capturing the program’s first Big West title and securing its first NCAA Tournament berth at the Division I level, Cal Poly established then-single-season records for total victories (39) and overall (.696) and conference (.778) winning percentage. After dealing defeats to No. 12 Washington, No. 6 Northwestern and No. 9 Stanford, Cal Poly opened Big West play with eight-straight victories. The Mustangs, who led the conference race wire-to-wire, closed the regular season by winning five of their final six games and a 3-2 victory against Pacific on May 11 not only secured the Big West crown, but also provided Condon her 100th career victory. Headlined by Big West Player of the Year selection Lisa Modglin – who also doubled as Cal Poly’s first NFCA All-America pick in nine years – Cal Poly placed eight Mustangs on the 2007 all-conference team. A standout player in the collegiate and international arenas, Condon’s influence at Cal Poly was felt instantly as her inaugural 2005 squad posted a 35-16 mark. The Mustangs went 15-6 in Big West play and the secondplace finish was, at the time, the best showing in program history. Cal Poly’s 27-23 record in 2006 was backed by an 11-7 Big West mark that guaranteed a third-place finish. The record solidified the program’s first back-to-back winning campaigns since the 1996 (23-19) and 1997 (37-17) seasons. Condon’s sides have been especially adept in defending Janssen Field, having racked up a 76-37 (.673) home record under her guidance and a dominating 40-15 (.727) mark since the start of the 2008 season. Under Condon, Cal Poly players have enjoyed six selections to the NFCA Division I
All-West Region team while 31 total Mustangs have garnered All-Big West first and second team selection. Condon began her coaching career at UNLV in 1994, assisting the Rebels to a third-place finish at the 1995 WCWS. She relocated to Northwestern in 1997 before beginning a twoyear stint with Oregon State in 1998. The following season, the Beavers recorded a schoolrecord 47 wins and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Head coach Kirk Walker’s staff earned Speedline/NFCA Pacific Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Condon spent the 2000 campaign with UNLV before returning to Corvallis in 2001. She served four additional seasons at Oregon State until accepting the Cal Poly head coaching position on Aug. 25, 2004. Condon competed collegiately at Iowa State and completed a prolific career in 1990. A 1989 NFCA All-America second team selection, fourtime All-Big Eight honoree and three-time academic all-conference pick, Condon remains Iowa State’s all-time leader for hits (216), runs (120), triples (24) and batting average (.351). The outfielder was inducted into the Iowa State Hall of Fame in 2003. A native of Edina, Minn., Condon earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Iowa State in 1991 with a minor in health. Condon began a two-year stint with USA Softball in 1994 by helping the Americans capture the 1994 International Softball Federation World Championship in St. John’s, Newfoundland. A year later, the United States won the Pan-American Games gold medal in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Additionally, Condon played on three National Women’s Fastpitch League championship teams with the California Commotion and was named an ASA All-American four times – twice with the Commotion and twice more with MCM Sports. She earned gold medals in softball at the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1994 and 1995 and in team handball at the 1993 competition.

GARZA First Season • UNLV, 2002
ASSISTANT COACH (PITCHING)
Former UNLV standout Linda Garza is in her first season as associate head coach with the Cal Poly softball program. Garza joined the Mustangs after serving as head coach at Wright State during the 2010 season. After directing Wright State to a third-place finish in the Horizon League regular season standings, Garza’s Raiders produced three-successive victories against elimination to win the postseason conference tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament. Three Raiders were named to the 2010 All-Horizon League first team
under Garza’s guidance as the program established single-season records for hits (538), walks (148) and stolen bases (150). Garza arrived at Wright State after serving as the top assistant at Purdue (2006-09), aiding the Boilermakers to 30-plus victories during each of her four seasons. At Purdue, Garza assisted with both recruiting and scheduling while helping in the refinement of the program’s outfielders. Under Garza’s guidance, Purdue established five program offensive records while 10 Boilermakers
earned All-Big Ten Conference praise. Garza, who has also served as an assistant at Tulsa and Arkansas, received her start at UNLV, where she worked for one season as a student assistant coach following her playing career with the Rebels (1998-01). A four-year starter at second base, third base and in the outfield, Garza finished her UNLV career ranked among the program’s top-10 players for doubles, walks, hits and sacrifices. Garza, who earned AllMountain West Conference praise
as a senior after leading UNLV in triples, RBI and sacrifice hits, started the final 155 games of her career. A four-time All-Mountain West academic honoree, Garza received a bachelor's degree in health education from UNLV in 2002 and a master's degree in kinesiology from Texas Woman's University in May 2009.
ANI
NYHUS Fifth Season • Oregon, 2005
Former Canadian Olympian, University of Oregon standout and Junior College Player of the Year selection Ani Nyhus is in her fifth season as an assistant on Jenny Condon’s staff and as Cal Poly’s pitching coach. The 2010 campaign proved to be another productive season for Cal Poly’s rotation, which led all Big West programs in ERA and suffered the second-fewest losses of any conference staff. The 2009 Mustangs, however, produced the finest in-circle effort in program history. Highlighted by lefthander Anna Cahn, named Big West Pitcher of the Year and to the NFCA All-West Region team after setting program single-season records for victories (28-7) and innings worked (232.2), Cal Poly’s 2009 rotation led all conference programs in ERA
(1.72), opposing batting average (.225), wins (41) and fewest losses (12). The Mustangs also allowed just 62 walks and 117 total runs in 374.1 innings. Nyhus’ influence upon the Mustang pitching staff was felt immediately during her initial 2007 season, as Cal Poly lowered its team ERA 82 points from the previous season and struck out 82 more hitters. As a result, three of Cal Poly’s four pitchers garnered All-Big West praise. In 2008, Cal Poly’s 2.63 team ERA and .246 opposing batting average each ranked as the secondlowest figures among Big West rotations. Accordingly, the Mustangs yielded conference lows for hits (296), doubles (41), homers (21) and walks (83). Under Nyhus, Cal Poly pitchers have earned six total All-Big West first and second team honors.
As a collegian at Oregon, Nyhus earned NFCA All-America third team and All-Pac-10 Conference first team honors in 2004 after posting a 25-12 record and a 1.54 ERA. The win total remains the second-highest in Oregon single-season history and Nyhus added 202 strikeouts to her resume for the Ducks, who reached the championship game of the Florida State Regional. Nyhus, who no-hit Utah State during the 2004 campaign, earned all 10 of Oregon’s Pac-10 victories and shut out six ranked opponents. Her 1.67 ERA remains the eighth-best mark in program history. Nyhus began her collegiate career at Central Arizona College. As a sophomore, Nyhus struck out 378 batters and posted 40 victories to earn Junior College Player of the Year, AllAmerica, all-region and All-Arizona

Community College Athletic Association honors as the Vaqueros finished 70-4 and captured the National Junior College Athletic Association championship. Nyhus collected 34 victories as a freshman in 2002 as the Vaqueros went 63-2. Along with her single-season bests, Nyhus owns CAC career records for total victories (74) and strikeouts (627). A native of Prince George, British Columbia, Nyhus pitched for the Canadian National Team that went 3-4 at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics. A national team member from 2002-04, Nyhus compiled a 2-1 mark for Canada at the 2003 U.S. Cup.

More than 19,000 students, nationally-renown courses of study and the top-ranked public master’s university in the western United States ... all 11 miles from the Pacific Ocean.
This is Cal Poly ocated in the central California coastal town of San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly comprises one of 23 campuses in the California State University, the nation’s largest four-year undergraduate university system. Each CSU campus is given considerable freedom to develop its programs and each institution boasts its own qualities and strengths. Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing principle of instruction prepares undergraduates for careers in applied technical and professional fields. From computers to crops, Cal Poly holds that the best preparation for any endeavor is derived through practical application. This ideal has set Cal Poly apart from other institutions and been the school’s driving philosophy since its 1901 founding. Courses at Cal Poly emphasize a high proportion of lab work, fieldwork and special assignments, culminating with a senior project. Unique on-campus opportunities – such as an organic farm and a student-run daily newspaper and majors of study ranging from aerospace engineering to wine and viticulture – make hands-on learning a daily reality at Cal Poly. In total, Cal Poly confers bachelor's degrees in 64 separate areas of study. Nine of those degrees are exclusive to the San Luis Obispo campus (see next page). For 18-consecutive years, U.S. News and World Report has ranked Cal Poly as the top public master’s university in the western United States. The publication also ranked Cal Poly’s College of Engineering as the No. 2 program in the nation among public non-doctoral institutions (see below). On-campus activities are headquartered at the renown University Union and Cal Poly’s student-run activities have earned enviable reputations across the nation. to the collegiate experience through a team of trained student leaders and university officials, all of whom provide academic and social resources, encourage awareness and promote relationships with the campus and central coast community. Athletically, Cal Poly boasts one of the most successful Division I programs for an institution of its size. During the 2009-10 academic year, the athletics department – which sponsors 20 varsity programs – captured Big West Conference championships in women’s soccer, men’s cross country and men’s tennis and enjoyed the All-America selections of wrestlers Chase Pami and Boris Novachkov. Women’s basketball forward Kristina Santiago was named Big West Player of the Year while softball designated player Anna Cahn earned Big West Field Player of the Year praise. Mustangs earned 42 all-conference honors while seven Cal Poly student-athletes were named Big West Freshman of the Year in their respective sports. As testament to Cal Poly’s athletics and academic integrity, 38 Mustangs collected Big West All-Academic praise during the 2009-10 school year. The Cal Poly Athletics Department also finished second in the Big West Commissioner’s Cup, an award presented to the institution with the best overall results in the conference's 18 sponsored sports. Internationally, Cal Poly was represented at the 2008 Summer Olympics by former Mustangs Sharon Day (United States, high jump), Jimmy Van Ostrand (Canada, baseball) and Stephanie Brown Trafton, whose gold medal for the United States in the discus competition was the first such feat by a Mustang athlete.

CAL POLY AN ACADEMIC DYNASTY 18 YEARS IN THE MAKING For the 18th-straight year, Cal Poly was rated by U.S. News and World Report as the best public master’s university in the western United States in its 2011 America’s Best Colleges guidebook. Cal Poly moved up from sixth to fifth in the publication’s overall list of the west’s best universities – including both public and private institutions – that provide “a full range of undergraduate and master’s-level programs but few, if any, doctoral programs.” The publication ranks colleges that grant doctoral degrees, such as those in the University of California system, in a separate category. “Perhaps the most important gauge of the effectiveness of Cal Poly’s educational programs is how successful our graduates are in the real world,” said former Cal Poly President Warren J. Baker, who retired in 2010 after serving for 31 years. “We hear that our graduates are doing great things and we take pride in that. Getting a ranking in U.S. News for the 17th straight year, however, helps to validate the quality of our pro-

grams and the success of our gifted faculty in preparing students to meet the challenges they will face.” Within individual areas of study, U.S. News and World Report ranked Cal Poly’s College of Engineering No. 2 among public engineering programs for schools whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s (Cal Poly was bested only by the United States Military Academy). A number of College of Engineering programs ranked high in the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs categories. Cal Poly’s industrial and manufacturing, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering programs were each ranked as the top program at a public university in their respective specialty categories. Cal Poly’s civil and environmental engineering tracks were both ranked as the second best programs at a public university.

PRESIDENT JEFFREY D. ARMSTRONG effrey D. Armstrong, dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and professor of Animal Science at Michigan State University since 2001, officially began his duties as president at Cal Poly on Feb. 1, 2011. Armstrong was head of the Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue University from 1997 to 2001. He served in various positions at North Carolina State University from 1986 through 1997. “Cal Poly has an excellent reputation for preparing the knowledge leaders that help to drive California’s economy,” Armstrong said. “I am honored to join such an outstanding university and excited about engaging students, faculty and alumni to build on its strong foundation and create opportunities for the future.” Armstrong, who was raised on beef cattle, swine and tobacco farm in western Kentucky, attended Murray State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1981. He received both a master’s (1984) and doctorate (1986) in physiology and endocrinology from North Carolina State. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State has a total budget of more than $290 million for more than 4,500 students. During Armstrong’s tenure, faculty general fund FTE increased 44 percent, overall grant activity increased 146 percent and annual development funds increased by more than 250 percent. More than $200 million (with over $60 million in endowments) was been raised during his tenure. Through the efforts of Armstrong and other members of the administrative team, CANR undergraduate student minority population increased from 8.3 to 11.8 percent and minority faculty increased from 9.9 to 19 percent. In addition, annual revenue from off-campus credit instruction has increased

more than 20 percent during each of the last six years. “Dr. Armstrong’s outstanding academic credentials, leadership abilities and strong grounding in agriculture and science will be tremendous assets to the university and the community as it moves forward,” California State University Trustee Roberta Achtenberg, chair of the presidential search committee, said. “His reputation for teaching excellence and commitment to student-centered learning are the right complements to Cal Poly’s learn-bydoing philosophy.” As a faculty member at North Carolina State, Armstrong was engaged in the classroom, advising students, revising general university requirements and starting a Freshman College. He received numerous teaching awards at North Carolina State, including the designation as Alumni Distinguished Professor for Undergraduate Teaching. Armstrong’s laboratory-based research focused on nutrition and reproduction in bovine and porcine females and more recent work has been in social responsibility in the food chain. He has been a key participant in more than $9 million in grants and cooperative agreements. He has written or contributed to more than 45 scientific journal articles. Armstrong also serves as chair of the United Egg Producers Animal Welfare Advisory Committee. He advises McDonald’s Corporation in animal welfare, as well as broader issues related to corporate social responsibility. He served as chair of the Board of Agriculture Assembly Farm Bill Committee and co-chair of CREATE-21 (Creating, Research, Extension and Teaching Excellence for the 21st century), and contributed to significant changes in the most recent Congressional Farm Bill. Armstrong also served on the USDA Agricultural Research, Extension, Education and Economics Advisory Committee and recently completed service on the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Seventh District Advisory Council. Armstrong and his wife, Sharon, have two children. Jessica is a medical student at Michigan State and Zack is a finance major, also at Michigan State.
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS DON OBERHELMAN CAL POLY DIVISION I HONORS (1994-2010)
onald J. Oberhelman was named Cal Poly’s Director of Athletics on March 17, 2011. Oberhelman, 40, came to Cal Poly after serving as the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Associate Athletic Director at San Diego State University. In that capacity, he was responsible for the daily operations of San Diego State’s intercollegiate athletics program, including budget planning, hiring and evaluation of coaches, facilities and event management. He also worked closely with San Diego State’s fundraising team. “Cal Poly has a great tradition of academic excellence and we want to continue to build on that tradition in everything we do. For many people, athletics is the first impression they have of the university. We must make sure these impressions are great ones,” Oberhelman said at the time of his hiring (above). “We know our primary obligation is to develop our student-athletes. I want us to be leaders in graduation rates as well as in championships. But the receipt of a degree is not enough. It must be in a field of interest to the student-athlete and it must lead to a rewarding career. “We will not compromise and place student-athletes on the perceived shortest path to a degree. Here’s the bottom line for Cal Poly Athletics: We are in the business of developing citizens and leaders. Along the way, we can also win championships. Experiencing what it takes to be a champion is a great education in and of itself.” Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong echoed Oberhelman’s sentiments. “Don’s goal is for all of our student-athletes to leave Cal Poly with a diploma and a championship ring,” Armstrong said. “That’s a great goal for our student-athletes and our fans.” Prior to his tenure at San Diego State, Oberhelman served as the senior associate athletic director at Southern Mississippi (2002-07), the education coordinator for athletics at Texas A&M (1998-2002) and as a compliance assistant at Florida State (1995-1998). He earned his bachelor’s in business administration at Kansas State and his master’s in athletic administration at Florida State.

The Home of Cal Poly Softball
he 2011 campaign marks the Cal Poly softball program’s 11th anniversary at Bob Janssen Field. Named for the San Luis Obispo native dedicated to promoting youth sports and recreation within the central coast community, the Robert H. Janssen Foundation contributed $250,000 toward the construction of the project in order to support both the Mustang softball program and local youth sports programs. Located adjacent to Robin Baggett Baseball Stadium and comprising half of Ozzie Smith Plaza, Janssen Field is part of the 47-acre Sports Complex, an area that includes multipurpose fields for use by the student population. Janssen Field features 426 permanent chair-back seats. With the inclusion of bleachers, Janssen Field seats 1,000 spectators, making it the largest venue among the eight Big West Conference member programs. On March 25, 2007, a complex-record 1,532 fans packed Janssen Field to watch Cal Poly battle nationally-ranked UCLA (top). The lighted complex also includes enclosed batting cages and practice areas for both teams, an onsite clubhouse for the Mustangs (above), restrooms and concession and merchandising areas. Janssen Field measures 205 feet down the right and left field foul lines
