2012-13 Season Outlook Seven Starters Return, But Mustangs Have Youthful Look 141 – Filling this weight class following the departure of three-time NCAA AllAmerican Boris Novachkov will be junior Brandan Rocha, who was 5-7 a year ago at 133, including a 1-3 mark in dual meets, and posted a 3-2 record in the Las Vegas Invitational. At Lemoore High School, Rocha earned four league individual titles and pair of San Joaquin Valley championships, twice was a state finalist and earned over 200 victories in high school. “Brandan was hampered by injuries last year, but has the ability to make a major impact in the Pac-12 this year,” said Buckley. “He is strong as an ox and should get to the NCAAs this year.” 149 – Redshirt freshman Damien Arredondo, 5-3 in open tournaments as a redshirt a year ago, including a second-place finish in the California Collegiate Open, likely will fill this slot. The 2011 graduate of Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif., was a three-time state placewinner, placing third as a senior, sixth as a junior and fourth as a sophomore. “He had a great redshirt season last year and improved drastically,” said Buckley. “He has a positive attitude, strong work

141 pounds in the California Community College State Championships in 2010 and the 2009 graduate of Irvine High School placed seventh at 140 pounds in the 2009 California State High School Championships. “Chene had a nice season at 149, including a win over a top-15 wrestler (a 2-1 decision over No. 12 Josh Wilson of Utah Valley),” said Buckley. “Kyle works incredibly hard and has made some nice gains over the last year. He battled some injuries last year, but is now healthy and well on his way for a spot at the NCAA Championships.” Sophomore Gianpier Yanez, 6-13 overall and 3-7 in duals a year ago, could work his way into the lineup as well. At Servite High School in Anaheim, he placed seventh in the 2011 California State High School Championship following a third-place finish in the CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet. “Yanez showed great improvement over the summer and did a good job for us after we pulled him out of his redshirt. Once he gains more experience and mat time, I believe he will help us greatly.” 165 – Sophomore Paul Woodman and

He wrestled as a senior at Poway High School in San Diego County and placed fourth in the California state high school championships, compiling a 47-8 record. Compiling a 155-36 in four prep seasons, King also was a Canadian national champion in Greco-Roman and Freestyle in 2011 and placed third in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle at the FILA Cadet USA Nationals, also in 2011. “Paul did a nice job last year after we pulled him out of his redshirt year,” said Buckley. “With more experience, he will be making a solid contribution in our lineup. “Connor is a freshman who could see a lot of time this year at this weight class,” Buckley added. “He did well in Colorado and had a nice season in California as a high school senior.” 174 – Returning NCAA qualifier and Pac12 champion Dominic Kastl moves up from 165 to fill the shoes vacated by 2012 NCAA All-American Ryan DesRoches, now an assistant coach with the Mustangs. Kastl finished 14-5 for the year, including a perfect 6-0 dual meet mark, as a redshirt freshman. He placed second in the Cowboy Open hosted by Wyoming. “He had a fantastic conclusion to the 2011-12 season and, showing up this fall, everything about him is better,” said Buckley. “He is much better and is stronger and leaner. He is technically sound and solid in all positions. We are expecting him on the NCAA podium this March.” Kastl placed fourth as a senior and sev-

He also was 3-6 in tournament competition. We believe this will be a great year for him.” 197 – This weight will belong to freshman J.T. Goodwin, a graduate of Bear Creek High School in Stockton who placed first in the 2010 and 2012 California state championship at 215 and 220 pounds, respectively. He compiled a 46-1 mark as a senior and was runner-up at the NHSCA High School Nationals at 195 pounds. He was 142-17 in four prep seasons. “Goodwin is a competitor and knows how to win the close matches,” Buckley added. “He scrambles well and moves well for a big guy. He has caught the coaches’ atten-

tion this fall and we expect him to be a key component in our lineup this year.” 285 – Atticus Disney enters his senior season as the Mustangs’ top heavyweight. He posted a 14-9 record with six falls as a junior, going 3-3 in duals and placing first in the California Collegiate Open and fifth in the Las Vegas Invitational. “Disney has a ton of athletic ability and came out on fire last year, getting ranked pretty high,” said Buckley. “He’s an incredible athlete. If he scores points and stays offensive, he could be a real threat at the national level and become an NCAA AllAmerican this year.” Disney compiled a 12-12 record and seven falls as a sophomore at 285 pounds in his first season at Cal Poly. He was a redshirt at Minnesota in the 2008-09 season before transferring to Cal Poly. Disney captured three Kansas state championships at heavyweight while competing at Shawnee Heights High School.

Former Mustang Lou Montano to be Inducted Former Cal Poly wrestler Lou Montano is among nine inductees for the Class of 2012 into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony was held May 12, 2012, at the Bakersfield Marriott, located adjacent to the Bakersfield Convention Center. Montano compiled a four year record of 112-16-1 at Cal Poly, setting a record for the most average wins per season. He was twice an NCAA Division I AllAmerican, placing second at 158 pounds as a senior in 1983 with a record of 41-2-1. He also placed eighth in 1982, also at 158 pounds. Montano's coaching career began at Cal Poly as an assistant coach for three seasons (1984-86). He then

moved to Cal State Bakersfield, where he was an assistant for five seasons (1987-91). He became the head coach at Columbia University for the next nine seasons (1992-2000). Montano was a three-sport athlete for Calexico High School, competing in wrestling, football and baseball. He played quarterback on the football team and was selected MVP in the Desert Valley League. In wrestling, Montano placed third in the California High School State Wrestling Championships in 1978. Montano, currently testing director at Cal State Bakersfield, has also served wrestling for many years as an wrestling skills technician, making presentations throughout the nation at major camps and clinics.

Mustang Runners-Up at NCAA Championships Chad Mendes, 2008 Chad Mendes completed one of the most storied seasons by a Cal Poly wrestler in the program’s history in 2008, tallying a 30-0 record before dropping a 5-2 decision to Ohio State’s J Jaggers in the NCAA Championship bout at 141 pounds. Mendes will be remembered as one of the all-time greats to walk the halls of Mott Gym. The Hanford, Calif. native recorded seven falls, eight major decisions and one technical fall in 2008. He pinned Paul Moseman of Cal State Bakersfield in just 13 seconds on Nov. 18 at the Fullerton Open and wooed a large crowd at Cal Poly by pinning the then-No. 2 ranked 141-pounder in the nation, Minnesota’s Manuel Rivera, in 1 minute, 34 seconds. At the NCAA Championships, Mendes won his first match by fall in just 34 seconds. Among his many accomplishments, Mendes won a Pac-12 title in 2008 and was also named the conference’s Wrestler of the Year. He also won tournament titles at the Michigan State Open and Fullerton Open and became the eighth wrestler in program history to navigate an undefeated dual slate. Mendes finished his career with an impressive 64-

14 record. He was an All-American at 125 pounds with a sixth-place finish in 2006 before bulking up to 141 for his senior year in the 2007-08 season. On Jan. 15, 2008, Mendes became the first Cal Poly wrestler to earn a No. 1 ranking by pollsters since Scott Heaton and Rick Worel did so together in 1980. After graduating from Cal Poly in the spring of 2008, Mendes embarked upon a professional fighting career with the Palace Fighting Championship circuit. After winning all five fights, he signed with the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) in October 2009, posting a 4-0 mark before the WEC merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2010. Mendes is 3-1 in the UFC, 12-1 overall, and will face Hacran Dias in December at UFC on Fox. His only loss was to UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo in January 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. His favorite technique is the wushu finger hold. “It’s a great opportunity and a great honor to be competing in the UFC,” said Mendes. “This is where I’ve always wanted to fight and it’s awesome to be a part of such a huge organization.”

Chase Pami, 2010 Cal Poly’s Chase Pami became the sixth NCAA Division I runner-up in Mustang wrestling history in March 2010. Trying to become the third Division I national champion, Pami led 2-1 early in the first period, but eventually fell 6-4 to top-seeded and four-time NCAA All-American J.P. O'Connor of Harvard in the 157-pound final at the Qwest Center Omaha. Pami closed out his Cal Poly career with a 29-7 record as a senior and a 100-35 career mark. Pami, the lowest seeded wrestler in the championship finals, tried to become the first Cal Poly wrestler in 34 years to capture a Division I national title. Tom Kline won in 1969 and Mark DiGirolamo accomplished the feat in 1976. Pami earned his 100th career win in the semifinals with a 13-5 major decision against Justin Lister of Binghamton. Pami placed seventh in the 2009 NCAA meet. Pami also joins Kline (1968), John Woods (1969), Cliff Hatch (1975), Montano (1983) and Chad Mendes (2008) as the only Mustangs to earn sec-

ond-place finishes at the Division I nationals. Pami captured back-to-back Pac-12 Conference titles at 157 pounds in 2008 and 2009. Only other Mustangs to claim consecutive Pac-10 championships are Eric Osborne (1987-88), Jake Gaeir (1993-94) and Boris Novachkov (2010-11). Pami was an NCAA qualifier all four seasons at Cal Poly. He finished 27-9 as a junior, 24-6 as a sophomore and 20-13 as a freshman. He was a two-time Nevada state champion and four-time high school All-American while wrestling at Cimarron Memorial High School in Las Vegas. He was 185-14 in his prep career. In December 2011, Pami qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which were held in April 2012 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. Pami placed fourth at the Trials. Currently in training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., Pami captured the 66kg freestyle championship at the 2012 New York Athletic Club International held in November 2012.

Boris Novachkov, 2011 In 2011, for the third time in four years, a Cal Poly wrestler captured second place in the NCAA Division I National Championships. At Philadelphia, junior Boris Novachkov, seeded third, won four matches to reach the 141-pound final, but for the second time in the 2010-11 season, he dropped a 3-2 decision to Kellen Russell of Michigan. Those were Novachkov’s only losses against 31 victories that season. Novachkov, who placed seventh at 133 pounds and earned NCAA All-American honors a year earlier, earned a 6-1 decision over Buffalo sophomore Andrew Schutt, followed by a 4-2 decision over Matthew Bonson of Lock Haven on the first day of competition at the nationals. The next day, he shut out No. 6 Andrew Alton of Penn State 2-0 in the quarterfinals and earned a 9-3 victory over second-seeded Michael Thorn of Minnesota in the semifinals. In 2012, Novachkov became the first four-time Division I national qualifier at Cal Poly and first

three-time All-American, placing third at 141 pounds in St. Louis. The two-time Pac-12 champion finished his Mustang career with a 121-23 record. A graduate of Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, Novachkov went 4-2 in the 2010 nationals, with both losses decided in overtime. Prior to the 2011 nationals, he won the Fullerton Open as well as the Midlands and placed second at the Las Vegas Invitational. Four of his wins in the 2010-11 season were by fall and Novachkov also won four matches by technical fall and five by major decision. He posted a spotless 11-0 record in dual meets with two pins and a pair of technical falls and was 10-2 against nationally ranked wrestlers. Novachkov was 13-0 in duals and 34-4 overall as a senior with four falls. He placed first in the Cowboy Open and Reno Tournament of Champions. He currently trains with the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, coached by Kenny Monday.

Mustangs Return to National Polls After an absence of a few years, the Cal Poly wrestling team is back in the national rankings. The Mustangs were ranked anywhere from No. 15 to 25 most of the 2009-10 season and finished tied for 18th in the NCAA National Championships. Cal Poly also was ranked every week in the 2010-11 campaign and finished 32nd at the NCAAs. The Mustangs opened the 2011-12 season with a No. 23 national ranking and were ranked in the lower teens and upper 20s all season long. In his first season as head coach at Cal Poly, Brendan Buckley guided the Mustangs to a No. 15 ranking in WIN Magazine's Tournament Power Index, a measure of how a team will do in tournament competition.

Individually, two-time NCAA All-American Boris Novachkov, 174-pound senior Ryan Ryan DesRoches and 197-pound senior Ryan Smith received the highest preseason rankings. Novachkov, second in the NCAA Championships in 2011 and seventh in 2010, was ranked as high as No. 2 by the various publications in the preseason while DesRoches, a two-time NCAA qualifier, was ranked No. 15 and Smith No. 13. Novachkov went on to earn his third AllAmerican certificate with a third-place finish at the nationals while DesRoches placed eighth. Both were consistently ranked in the top 20 in the nation. This year, defending Pac-12 champion Dominic Kastl and freshman Devon Lotito were ranked in early season polls.

huck Liddell ranks as one of, if not the, most famous Cal Poly graduates in the school’s history. For two years Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell reigned as the UFC light heavyweight champion, but before that, Liddell starred in Mott Gym as a 190-pound wrestler.

win the Light Heavyweight Title. He defended his titles successfully five times, all ending with either a knockout or a TKO. He surrendered his belt after losing in a matchup with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, three years to the day of being crowned champion.

Recently, Liddell released a book that chronicles his life as a fighter. Iceman: My Fighting Life debuted on February 17, 2008, and spent multiple weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Despite his busy schedule as a fighter and a world-renowned celebrity, Liddell still takes time to remember his roots as a Cal Poly Mustang. Liddell can often be seen matside at Cal Poly matches and is an avid fan of the team. He was inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 11, 2009.

Liddell started training for his career at the age of 12 in Santa Barbara. He was a four-year starter on the football team at San Marcos High School, and became a Division I wrestler at Cal Poly in 1988. After spending five years on the wrestling squad, Liddell would complete his degree while pursuing a career as a professional fighter, graduating in 1995 with a B.A.in business. As a graduation gift to himself, he had his iconic tattoo inked on his scalp which reads “Koei-Kan” (“prosper with happiness.”) He would then transition to mixed martial artist when he earned a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under John Lewis, ultimately aiming for a career that would take his fame and fortune to a new level. Liddell made his UFC debut in 1998 with a decision victory over Noe Hernandez. He soon established his reputation as a devastating striker with victories over Tito Ortiz, Renato Sobral and Wanderlei Silva over the next few years. On May 26, 2004, he knocked out Randy Couture in two minutes to

More than 19,000 students, nationally-renown courses of study and the top-ranked public master’s university in the western United States ... all 11 miles from the Pacific Ocean.

This is Cal Poly ocated in the central California coastal town of San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly comprises one of 23 campuses in the California State University, the nation’s largest fouryear undergraduate university system. Each CSU campus is given considerable freedom to develop its programs and each institution boasts its own qualities and strengths. Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing principle of instruction prepares undergraduates for careers in applied technical and professional fields. From computers to crops, Cal Poly holds that the best preparation for any endeavor is derived through practical application. This ideal has set Cal Poly apart from other schools and been the school’s driving philosophy since its 1901 founding. Courses at Cal Poly emphasize a high proportion of lab work, fieldwork and special assignments, culminating with a senior project. Unique on-campus opportunities – such as an organic farm and a student-run daily newspaper and majors of study ranging from aerospace engineering to wine and viticulture – make hands-on learning a daily reality at Cal Poly. In total, Cal Poly confers bachelor's degrees in 64 separate areas of study. Nine of those degrees are exclusive to the San Luis Obispo campus (see next page). For 19 consecutive years, U.S. News and World Report has ranked Cal Poly as the top public master’s university in the western United States. The publication also ranked Cal Poly’s College of Engineering as the No. 2 program in the nation among public non-doctoral institutions (see below). On-campus activities are headquartered at the renown University Union and Cal Poly’s student-run activities have earned enviable reputations across the nation. Week of Welcome offers first-quarter students a successful introduction to the collegiate experience through a team of trained student leaders and university officials, all of whom provide academic and social resources, encourage awareness and promote relationships with the campus and central coast community.

Athletically, Cal Poly boasts one of the most successful Division I programs for an institution of its size. During the 2011-12 academic year, the athletics department – which sponsors 20 varsity programs – saw the men’s cross country and men’s tennis programs advance to the NCAA Championships. Individually, Mitch Haniger (baseball), Asa Jackson (football), Jake Romanelli (football), Boris Novachkov (wrestling) and Ryan DesRoches (wrestling) each earned All-America honors. At the NCAA Championships, Novachkov finished third at 141 pounds for his third AllAmerican honor while DesRoches was eighth at 174 pounds. Haniger was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round of the MLB Draft in June 2012 while Jackson was selected in the third round by the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL Draft in April 2012. The men's tennis doubles team of Andre Dome and Matt Fawcett qualified for NCAA competition as did Dome in singles while four wrestlers and two track and field athletes also advanced to the NCAA finals. Mitch Moriarty and Meghan Breadmore both earned Big West Freshman Player of the Year honors in cross country while three Mustangs -- Haniger, Kristina Santiago (women’s basketball) and Jennifer Keddy (women’s volleyball) -- were named Big West Player of the Year. As testament to Cal Poly’s athletics and academic integrity, 58 Mustangs collected conference all-academic praise during the 2011-12 school year. The Cal Poly Athletics Department also finished fifth in the Big West Commissioner’s Cup, an award presented to the institution with the best overall results in the conference’s 16 sponsored sports. Internationally, Cal Poly was represented at the 2008 Summer Olympics by former Mustangs Sharon Day (United States, high jump), Jimmy Van Ostrand (Canada, baseball) and Stephanie Brown Trafton, whose gold medal for the United States in the discus competition was the first such feat by a Mustang athlete. Day (heptathlon) and Brown Trafton (discus) also qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

CAL POLY AN ACADEMIC DYNASTY 19 YEARS IN THE MAKING For the 19th straight year, Cal Poly was rated by U.S. News and World Report as the best public master’s university in the western United States in its 2012 America’s Best Colleges guidebook. Cal Poly placed seventh in the publication’s overall list of the west’s best universities – including both public and private institutions – that provide “a full range of undergraduate and master’s-level programs but few, if any, doctoral programs.” The publication ranks colleges that grant doctoral degrees, such as those in the University of California system, in a separate category. “Perhaps the most important gauge of the effectiveness of Cal Poly’s educational programs is how successful our graduates are in the real world,” said former Cal Poly President Warren J. Baker, who retired in 2010 after serving for 31 years. “We hear that our graduates are doing great things and we take pride in that. Getting a ranking in U.S. News for the 19th straight year, however, helps to validate the quality of our programs and the success of our gifted faculty in preparing students to meet the challenges they will face.”

Within individual areas of study, U.S. News and World Report ranked Cal Poly’s College of Engineering No. 2 among public engineering programs for schools whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s (Cal Poly was bested only by the United States Military Academy). A number of College of Engineering programs ranked high in the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs in their individual specialty categories. The university’s computer, electrical and mechanical engineering programs were each ranked as the top program at a public university in their respective specialty categories. Cal Poly’s civil and environmental engineering program was ranked the second best program at a public university.

CAL POLY HISTORY

DISTINGUISHED AND NOTABLE ALUMNI

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS, TRANSCENDENT FUTURE

FROM SAN LUIS OBISPO TO SPACE, THE NATION’S ELITE CALL CAL POLY HOME

In front of the Orfalea College of Business iis the O’Neill Green, which hosts, among other activities, a tailgate prior to football games at the adjacent and recently remodeled Alex G. Spanos Stadium. A 1948 graduate of the College of Agriculture, the late Richard J. O’Neill is the founder of Supporters of Mustang Athletics Teams (SUMAT) and was instrumental in helping to stabilize funding for Cal Poly.

n the 1890s, when a proposal for a teacher training school in San Luis Obispo seemed unlikely to succeed, California State Senator Sylvester C. Smith instead suggested a polytechnic institute. Myron Angel, chronicler of San Luis Obispo County history, became an ardent supporter of the idea and articulated a vision to establish a school that would “teach the hand as well as the head.” The plan succeeded and on March 8, 1901, legislation was signed founding the California Polytechnic School, then a vocational high school. During the ensuing three decades, Cal Poly evolved into the modern equivalent of a junior college, but its future became uncertain. In 1933, however, Julian A. McPhee, chief of the California Bureau of Agricultural Education, saved the institution from abolishment by agreeing to become school president. During the next 33 years, McPhee guided Cal Poly’s transformation into a four-year institution and set an educational standard still emulated today. Cal Poly’s first baccalaureate exercises were held in May 1942 and in 1947, the institution was officially renamed California State Polytechnic College. As programs continued to evolve, the institution became California Polytechnic State University in 1972. The Learn by Doing ethos continues to inform the paths Cal Poly’s alumni pursue, and they keep the friendships they start here. They also learn by succeeding. Median starting salary for recent graduates was $51,000 (beating all other CSU and UC campuses) and mid-career salaries for Cal Poly alumni are better than all UC and CSU campuses except Berkeley and UC San Diego - and better than many private universities. More than half of Cal Poly seniors have a job offer in hand before they graduate - even in today’s difficult economy.

CAL POLY ADMINISTRATION

PRESIDENT JEFFREY D. ARMSTRONG effrey D. Armstrong, former dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and professor of Animal Science at Michigan State, officially began his duties as president at Cal Poly on Feb. 1, 2011. Armstrong was head of the Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue University from 1997 to 2001. He served in various positions at North Carolina State University from 1986 through 1997. “Cal Poly has an excellent reputation for preparing the knowledge leaders that help to drive California’s economy,” Armstrong said. “I am honored to join such an outstanding university and excited about engaging students, faculty and alumni to build on its strong foundation and create opportunities for the future.” Armstrong, who was raised on beef cattle, swine and tobacco farm in western Kentucky, attended Murray State where he received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1981. He received both a master’s (1984) and doctorate (1986) in physiology and endocrinology from North Carolina State. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State has a total budget of more than $290 million for more than 4,500 students. During Armstrong’s tenure, faculty general fund FTE increased 44 percent, overall grant activity increased 146 percent and annual development funds increased by more than 250 percent. More than $200 million (with over $60 million in endowments) was been raised during his tenure. Through the efforts of Armstrong and other members of the administrative team, CANR undergraduate student minority population increased from 8.3 to 11.8 percent and minority faculty increased from 9.9 to 19 percent. In addition, annual revenue from off-campus credit instruction has increased more

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS DON OBERHELMAN CAL POLY DIVISION I HONORS

onald J. Oberhelman was named Cal Poly’s Director of Athletics on March 17, 2011. Oberhelman, 41, came to Cal Poly after serving as the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Associate Athletic Director at San Diego State University. In that capacity, he was responsible for the daily operations of San Diego State’s intercollegiate athletics program, including budget planning, hiring and evaluation of coaches, facilities and event management. He also worked closely with San Diego State’s fundraising team. “Cal Poly has a great tradition of academic excellence and we want to continue to build on that tradition in everything we do. For many people, athletics is the first impression they have of the university. We must make sure these impressions are great ones,” Oberhelman said at the time of his hiring. “We know our primary obligation is to develop our student-athletes. I want us to be leaders in graduation rates as well as in championships. But the receipt of a degree is not enough. It must be in a field of interest to the student-athlete and it must lead to a rewarding career. “We will not compromise and place student-athletes on the perceived shortest path to a degree. Here’s the bottom line for Cal Poly Athletics: We are in the business of developing citizens and leaders. Along the way, we can also win championships. Experiencing what it takes to be a champion is a great education in and of itself.” Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong echoed Oberhelman’s sentiments. “Don’s goal is for all of our student-athletes to leave Cal Poly with a diploma and a championship ring,” Armstrong said. “That’s a great goal for our student-athletes and our fans.” Prior to his tenure at San Diego State, Oberhelman served as the senior associate athletic director at Southern Mississippi (2002-07), the education coordinator for athletics at Texas A&M (1998-2002) and as a compliance assistant at Florida State (1995-1998). He earned his bachelor’s in business administration at Kansas State and his master’s in athletic administration at Florida State.

than 20 percent during each of the last six years. “Dr. Armstrong’s outstanding academic credentials, leadership abilities and strong grounding in agriculture and science will be tremendous assets to the university and the community as it moves forward,” California State University Trustee Roberta Achtenberg, chair of the presidential search committee, said. “His reputation for teaching excellence and commitment to student-centered learning are the right complements to Cal Poly’s learn-bydoing philosophy.” As a faculty member at North Carolina State, Armstrong was engaged in the classroom, advising students, revising general university requirements and starting a Freshman College. He received numerous teaching awards at North Carolina State, including the designation as Alumni Distinguished Professor for Undergraduate Teaching. Armstrong’s laboratory-based research focused on nutrition and reproduction in bovine and porcine females and more recent work has been in social responsibility in the food chain. He has been a key participant in more than $9 million in grants and cooperative agreements. He has written or contributed to more than 45 scientific journal articles. Armstrong also serves as chair of the United Egg Producers Animal Welfare Advisory Committee. He advises McDonald’s Corporation in animal welfare, as well as broader issues related to corporate social responsibility. He served as chair of the Board of Agriculture Assembly Farm Bill Committee and co-chair of CREATE-21 (Creating, Research, Extension and Teaching Excellence for the 21st century), and contributed to significant changes in the most recent Congressional Farm Bill. Armstrong also served on the USDA Agricultural Research, Extension, Education and Economics Advisory Committee and recently completed service on the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Seventh District Advisory Council. MUSTANGS EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM or more than 100 years, Cal Poly’s student-athletes have been dedicated to excellence in both the athletic and academic arenas. During the 2011-12 scholastic year alone, 58 Mustangs were named to all-conference academic teams. Since Cal Poly transitioned to the Division I level in 1994, the school has enjoyed 634 total all-conference academic selections – an average of more than 35 per year. Taking pride in each student’s ability to excel both athletically and intellectually, Cal Poly and the athletics department offer guidance and support to each student-athlete during his or her tenure. To support these motives, the athletics department initiated the Academic Resource Center.

F

Opened in 2001, the center provides yearround academic support, tutoring, workshops and academic advising. The center has also developed study hall programs with bi-quarterly progress checks, weekly academic appointments and a first-year seminar class for incoming student-athletes. In deference to the student-athlete’s need for class schedule flexibility, Cal Poly also offers in-season priority registration for two of the three quarters during which competition occurs. Of the 64 major courses offered at Cal Poly, Mustang student-athletes were enrolled in 54 separate areas, as of the Fall 2009 term.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE Featuring 20 varsity programs, the Cal Poly Athletics Department is in its 19th year of NCAA Division I competition since completing reclassification in 1994. With the exception of football (Big Sky Conference), wrestling and men’s swimming (Pac-12 Conference) and the women’s swimming and indoor track and field programs (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), Cal Poly is also in its 17th year as a member of the Big West Conference. Among Big West institutions, only UC Davis (22 programs) boasts more athletic disciplines than Cal Poly. Prior to transitioning to the Division I level, Cal Poly ranked as the most successful institution in the history of NCAA Division II athletics with 35 national team titles. Cal Poly has continued its winning tradition at the top flight with teams and individuals routinely earning conference championships and NCAA Tournament berths. At the NCAA Championships, Novachkov finished third at 141 pounds for his third All-American honor while DesRoches was eighth at 174 pounds. Cal Poly athletes have consistently excelled outside the bounds of the collegiate arena. Cal Poly was represented at the 2008 Summer Olympics by former Mustangs Sharon Day (United States, high jump), Jimmy Van Ostrand (Canada, baseball) and Stephanie Brown Trafton, whose gold medal for the United States in the discus competition was the first such feat by a Mustang athlete. Day (heptathlon) and Brown Trafton (discus) also qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Other prominent post-Cal Poly examples include All-American wide receiver Ramses Barden (2005-08), who was a third-round selection by the New York Giants in 2009. Former linebacker Chris Gocong (2002-05) – one of Cal Poly’s three Buck Buchanan Award winners as the Football Championship Subdivision’s top defensive player – made 35 starts in three active seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before signing with the Cleveland Browns in 2010. Former men’s soccer midfielder Anton Peterlin is the only Big West player to have appeared in an English Football League match. Two former Mustangs -- Junior Burgos (Toronto FC) and Patrick McLain (Chivas USA) are with Major League Soccer clubs. As of August 2012, the Cal Poly baseball program had produced five current Major League players in the last three years while 22 other Mustangs were active professionally.

On Oct. 17, 2008, another sellout crowd of 11,075 supporters – then the thirdlargest regular season crowd figure in NCAA men’s soccer history – flooded Spanos Stadium for Cal Poly’s nationally-televised showdown against central coast rival UC Santa Barbara. During the 2009 season, the men’s soccer program ranked third among NCAA Division I programs by averaging 2,213 fans per home date. Cal Poly’s volleyball, wrestling and basketball programs call 3,032-seat Mott Gym (right) home. The athletics department ensured its commitment to Cal Poly’s programs by installing a new $700,000 floor during the summer of 2007. During recent years, Mott Gym has hosted the Pac-12 Conference Wrestling Championships and, in front of a sold-out audience, the first and seconds rounds of the 2006 NCAA Volleyball Tournament (also right). The men’s basketball program produced its most recent sellout during a 60-57 defeat of eventual Big West champion UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 27, 2010. Additionally, the Mustang women’s basketball program drew a program-record 1,737 fans for a Feb. 14, 2009 game against UC Santa Barbara. Remodeled at a cost of more than $3 million, the Olympic-sized Anderson Aquatic Center (left) was completed in August 2009 and plays host to both Cal Poly’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. Situated adjacent to Mott Gym, the pool measures 12,348 square feet. Eight 50yard lanes highlight the complex, which also provides for a total of eighteen 25-yard cross course lanes. The complex also features a 15-by30-foot all-shallow therapy pool. Anderson Aquatic Center held its first official event on Oct. 3, 2009, when the Mustang women’s swimming program welcomed then-defending national champion California to San Luis Obispo.
