Meet the Mustangs Alex

Crozier

A

lex Crozier is in his 22nd year at the helm of the Cal Poly women’s soccer program. He is the Mustangs’ only coach since the program began playing at the intercollegiate level in 1992. Crozier’s teams have posted a 245-135-40 overall record in his previous 21 seasons, including six NCAA Tournament appearances. Crozier came into the 2013 season ranked No. 37 all-time nationally in overall career victories (No. 2 among active coaches at California universities). He also has the most career wins in Big West play among the conference’s coaches (85 over 17 seasons, with a .682 winning percentage). In all, Crozier has coached 98 players who’ve earned All-Big West honors, the most of any member school since the formation of the conference in 1996. He has also coached three NSCAA All-Americans at Cal Poly, in addition to 17 other studentathletes who were also chosen for All-West Region accolades by either the NSCAA or Soccer Buzz Magazine. Crozier led Cal Poly to the Big West championship during the 2009 regular season, with a 7-1-0 record (14-5-1 overall). In 2009, senior goalkeeper Coral Hoover finished second in the nation in save percentage, at .919 (the 17th-best single-season figure in the 31-year history of Division I, as of the beginning of the 2013 season). That year also saw the Mustangs earn a memorable 1-0 overtime win over No. 7-ranked California.

Head Coach 22nd Season • Cal Poly, 1984

A decade earlier, the 1999 season was also a landmark milestone for Crozier and the Mustangs, who defeated Fresno State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 2-1, before falling to Stanford in second-round play. Crozier has earned the Big West Coach of the Year award on four occasions (1996, 1997, 2002 and 2003). Along the way, he helped build the Mustangs into a power, both regionally and on the national stage. Cal Poly cracked the NSCAA Top 25 in 1997, a year in which Mustang star Gina Oceguera won the overall Big West Player of the Year award outright. (Oceguera went on to play in the 1999 World Cup representing Mexico, and played professionally for the San Diego Spirit and the Bay Area CyberRays in the WUSA’s inaugural season of 2001.) After a dominant 2003 season in which the Mustangs went 18-2-2 overall, Cal Poly was ranked No. 20 in the country in the final Soccer America poll. The team’s 15 shutouts over the course of that season still stand as an all-time Big West record. The 2003 season also saw the emergence of forward Sharon Day, who earned conference freshman of the year honors. (Day, a two-sport star, has gone on to qualify for two Olympic Games in track and field events.) In 1993, Cal Poly’s final season at the Division II level before moving to Division I, Crozier led the program to the national championship match held in Miami Shores, Fla., and earned the NSCAA National Coach of the Year award in the process. Despite a loss in the final, Mustang forward Kolleen Kassis — a future Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame inductee — was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player on offense. Crozier, a 1984 Cal Poly graduate with a civil engineering degree, was previously an assistant at Santa Clara for one season, and from 1989-91, he coached the West Valley FC Premier U-19 girls to the State Cup championship and a third-place

245-135-40 national finish. Crozier’s playing career included four years at Cal Poly and three seasons at Bullard High in Fresno. Bullard won CIF Central Section titles all three years, and Crozier was the team captain and earned team MVP and all-league honors in 1979. At Cal Poly, Crozier was team captain in 1982 and 1983 under coach Wolfgang Gartner, earning all-conference honors in both years, as well as All-Far West Region distinction in 1982. Crozier’s coaching impact has been felt at several notable programs around the nation. Dan Tobias, formerly the head coach at Arizona, previously served as an assistant under Crozier, and Wendy Jones, who set the Cal Poly record for points in a season, went on to coach at Washington State and Boise State. Additionally, former eight-year Cal Poly assistant P.J. Woolridge is now with USC. Crozier resides in San Luis Obispo with his wife, Judy King, and the couple’s two sons, Dan and Bo, and one daughter, Angie.

Facilities

Alex G. Spanos Stadium

The Home of Cal Poly Women’s Soccer In 2006, Alex G. Spanos Stadium was renovated on the California Avenue side, and three years later, a video board was installed behind the north goal. The Mustangs went 4-0-1 against Big West Conference opponents at home during the 2012 season. The stadium also houses Cal Poly football and men’s soccer games, as well as ceremonies for graduation, Week of Welcome and other events. On Sept. 10, 2010, a record crowd of 2,532 watched Cal Poly host No. 1-ranked North Carolina, the two-time defending national champion. (The Tar Heels won 1-0, scoring in the 49th minute.) The Friday-night attendance figure eclipsed the old mark of 2,299, set Aug. 27, 2004 for a 2-2 draw against No. 3 Santa Clara. The team often practices at the fields of the Cal Poly Sports Complex, located on the north side of campus. The complex, which totals 47 acres, initially opened in 2001, and features four lighted natural-grass fields below the softball and baseball stadiums.
